21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Terracoin's design flawed? on: April 04, 2013, 09:58:21 PM
Yes, we will be seeing a difficulty increase in a few hours. Its just the the current difficulty is based on the last couple days of mining when miners were still chain hopping. The average network performance was very low. It was only very high for a few minutes and then low performance for hours. What you're seeing now is a reflection of that.

With that being said, now is a great time to start mining TRC. Hurry up before the difficulty gradually goes up!
22  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Terracoin's design flawed? on: April 04, 2013, 09:48:03 PM
I would say "yes", but this is a known problem that has been corrected and should change after block 99988 (sometime Sunday).

Nope. The difficulty still fluctuates like crazy (between 12.000 and 2000 in the last few hours).

Indeed. What went wrong?

Chill. Just wait and watch.
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Terracoin's design flawed? on: April 04, 2013, 09:47:15 PM
No, I believe you are mistaken. The difficulty has been decreasing in the past few difficulty adjustments. This was actually to be expected initially after the expected fork that happened today. Because the average network over the last 24*30 blocks was so low, what you're seeing now is that correction. Eventually it will be going back up with all the new miners showing up. Please show me the difficulty and block numbers if you make a statement like that.

I would say "yes", but this is a known problem that has been corrected and should change after block 99988 (sometime Sunday).  The difficulty retargetting has been abused by miners jumping on and off the network.  Watch the difficulty changes next week.  They should be much smoother.

This mandatory build alters the way the difficulty is computed during retargets
.

What exactly does the difficulty change do and why? They haven't given much time for people to update given that it's a forking change. It's likely to cause problems with pools and exchanges with users on old clients wondering why they're not getting any of their coins confirmed.

The source diff for that change can be found here:
https://github.com/terracoin/terracoin/commit/300d6ac14fd5aaa6a71e14090fa72b1b1d029488

It appears that the averaging window is increased from 30 blocks to 24*30 blocks.
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Terracoin Mandatory Update to correct difficulty retarget (update software now!) on: March 28, 2013, 06:14:26 AM
The announcement was made here: http://terracoin.org/news/

Windows binaries are found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/terracoin/
(Linux users should know what to do)

If anyone knows a pool operator, you should let them know.  And definitely if you are solo-mining, you need to update now (before block 99988).
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Terracoin Difficulty Question on: March 28, 2013, 01:27:57 AM
It may still be a bit early to say, but it looks like the significant resonant difficulty changes have stopped.  This and the upcoming patch should smooth things out.
28  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Terracoin Difficulty Question on: March 27, 2013, 06:56:02 PM
It looks like the difficulty retargetting algorithm will be updated at block 99988 in order to address the resonant difficulty changing we've been observing. This will be a mandatory update.  I think that the block will be reached in about 4 days so I'm not sure how this change will be rolled out so quickly. Obviously, a few more eyes on this update would be a good thing.

https://github.com/terracoin/terracoin/commit/300d6ac14fd5aaa6a71e14090fa72b1b1d029488

So what exactly is the difference between Terracoin and Bitcoin now? The only unique thing it had going for it I can see is a faster difficulty adjustment, which turned out to be a bad idea.

I don't think it was such a bad idea, just that is depend on a big enough network hashrate not to be abused Sad

It's unfortunate and I think Terracoin will struggle to grow and probably shrink in the long run.

If the difficulty of Terracoin is made more like Bitcoin I just can't see it being viable long term now because even a coin like Litecoin gets questioned what's different about it when there are obvious benefits to Scrypt and faster confirmations, so how Terracoin will stand up to such criticism I don't know.

In my opinion PPCoin is the only legit alt coin left alongside Litecoin. But time will tel...

I see the future as a mix of alt coins.  There is no fixed pie where in order to have a winner, there must be losers.  Litecoin got an early start.  Terracoin benefits from ASICs. Some people see this as a problem but I see it as a benefit as long as the number of users is sufficiently high and the hash rate isnt too imbalanced.  Any coin that doesnt require specialized hardware in the future may be at risk to attack from botnets. I suppose the challenge for small altcoins will be to become big enough fast enough.  I think the prevalence of ASICs will do that for Terracoin and other Bitcoin clones based on the same algorithm.

Confirmation time is still lower than bitcoin and is different than the difficulty adjustment time. Bitcoin has many good things about it.  Confirmation time is shorter with TRC.. Fast difficulty adjustment isn't bad and Terracoin will still be faster.. The implementation probably was a bit ill conceived and prone to some abuse.  I think it will be corrected ahortly.

I'll take the 4 left.  Looks like 4 oz * $28.64/oz * 1 BTC/$62.60612 = 1.8298 BTC, right?

I'll take some free NVC. Thanks
33  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: TRC becoming the second most popular Alt-Coin? on: March 23, 2013, 07:16:51 AM
Not in my opinion. Total market value is too unreliable. I would say how many people are mining it would be a better indicator, and if you look at coinotron, it tells (a biased towards pool miners) but  a different story.

If you have 1 million coins and only one person is willing to sell 1 coin and they sell it (or ask to sell it) for $100 then you have a market share of $100 million dollars. It's too variable an indicator to be objective.
wtf? cant tell if serious or...

Well, there's certainly plenty of headroom for Terracoin.  While LTC will certainly gain some GPU-miner spillover from BTC once ASICs are ubiquitous, TRC has more potential for a rapid and disproportionate gain in network security from where things are today.  TRC was the only alternate coin that made out big with the most recent surge in the past two weeks.  All others have settled back down close to pre-surge levels.

An interesting comparison would be plotting the USD market value of coins over time rather than comparing to BTC.  BTC and the other alternate coins have been around a bit longer then TRC.  Were the BTC and LTC markets worth 2,478 BTC * $70/BTC = $173,460 a mere four months from introduction?
no.

I can't argue with that rebuttal, tgsrge.  You've convinced me.  I'm selling off my TRC.

Is there a wonderful person here who can sent me just 300?
Just to get me started?

Thank you very much!

I sent you 300.  You can send it back if/when you don't want it anymore.  BTW, I'm selling mine for TRC.

Do you still need 300 XRP? I sent you some.  If you don't need it, you can send it back
38  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Selling Ripple XRP for TRC on: March 20, 2013, 01:23:24 AM
I'm looking to sell 68,000 XRP for TRC.

Current rate is 35 XRP / 1 TRC.

Or make me an offer.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: TRC all time high Hash Rate! on: March 11, 2013, 08:15:58 PM
It was higher in October/November after the coin was introduced.  In the 100's of GH/s, IIRC
40  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Terracoin profitability at 488% on: March 11, 2013, 04:36:24 AM
There has been repeated stupid buy orders.  The volume is relatively low (~10BTC) but someone really wants TRC.  Or they're artificially pumping the price in order to dump TRC later.  Or perhaps they're divesting from BTC because they're speculating a BTC market crash?  Something's fishy.
