Hi, I've been following the recent fallout happening over at Ripple. The original founder of Ripple, Jed McCaleb, is threatening to dump his 9 billion XRP stash, which could clear the entire orderbook. It appears to be a threat to force the other founders, now CEO Chris Larsen and Arthur Brito, to return their ~11 billion to the OpenCoin foundation responsible for distributing the remaining 80 billion or so. Not only has Jed left Ripple to work on his "secret Bitcoin project", Kraken CEO Jesse Powell has also left the Ripple board as of yesterday. Jesse left an interesting comment at Reddit, http://www.reddit.com/r/Ripple/comments/26ccz3/ripple_board_member_resigns/chpwhbsWith the Ripple being open source, he wonders why there hasn't been a Ripple fork yet. Jesse jokes about a Dogecoin Ripple fork, which, if equally popular, could kill Ripple. The point is that anyone can start a company like Ripple. Ripple can be divided into two camps, as best described in another Reddit comment, http://www.reddit.com/r/Ripple/comments/26ccz3/ripple_board_member_resigns/chpxxbrCamp 1: A bottom-up approach: "Everybody can be their own little bank in their own little community." - a digital Hawala system, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HawalaCamp 2: A top-down approach: "Let's get banks on board so many people can use Ripple right away." - SWIFT 2.0 Ripple's leadership is pursuing the top-down approach to sign up financial institutions like German Fidor AG. But Ripple's inventor, Ryan Fugger, preferred a grassroots bottom-up approach, but failed to gain momentum. http://www.reddit.com/r/Ripple/comments/26ccz3/ripple_board_member_resigns/chpuhokIs now the right time to attempt the original Ripple idea? How does the Bitcoin community feel about bootstrapping a bottom-up Ripple fork, with fairly distributed coin. Me and my co-founder working at eCash in Amsterdam might consider pitching such an idea to investors in Europe. We would call it eCash. ("eCash" was originally invented in Amsterdam by David Chaum, visionary cryptographer. ) However, my most urgent concern is whether the Ethereum protocol is already superior to Ripple, or not? And where does PaySwarm by Manu Sporny from the W3C organization fit in? https://web-payments.org/

The Ripple approach is to get financial institutions to adopt Ripple. Bank customers won't even notice the difference if their USD accounts are hosted on Ripple's protocol.
That's the way to get mainstream adoption. Bitcoin can't replicate that approach. If you were a bank, would you adopt Bitcoin or Ripple? Once banks adopt Ripple, it becomes mainstream by default.

And AFAIK none of the lawsuits have been successful so far. So why lose 2.5% extra when selling to get a currency which they have problems delivering? This just doesn't make sense to me. EUR should be just as good as USD, and more liquid. JPY even better. So why USD?
And btw, I received an EUR (SEPA) withdrawal today. If you are going to sell anyway, this is a way of getting your funds out as fiat without paying money to an expensive law firm. Works for those who doesn't have enough in their MtGox account to be interesting as well. Great idea, if the price goes back up on Mt.Gox, I'll sell for fiat and withdraw using SEPA.

Is your cold storage working similar to trezor wallet ?
In a sense, yes. Private keys are kept offline, but public keys can be generated online. We use a watching-only Bitcoin Armory wallet for this purpose. Since Trezor will be open source, and Armory will support it, we will also offer linking your Trezor device to eCash.io in the future. (As soon as possible.)
|
|
|
Withdrawals are scheduled at least 6 hours in the future - this gives the opportunity to cancel withdrawals Does this mean I have to wait 6 hours before my coins come out of cold storage ? Is your cold storage working similar to trezor wallet ? Yes, our storage service works like that. The delay allows you to be notified via SMS or email. You can then cancel withdrawals even if your account was hacked.

Why should people trust someone to store their coins offline? What is your profit from this project (in % of holding deposits)? I wouldn't trust someone who are holding (for example) 3000BTC without any legal responsibility and making <10 btc monthly profit from it. What if you will be robed (physically) and your paper wallets will be stollen? What kind of insurance can you offer?
Hi, building trust remains our priority at the moment. We are having talks with a notary who may keep a copy of the paper wallet/private key in a safe. Our profits are generated from merchant services built on top of the wallet, i.e. transaction fees. We are currently piloting with hdphns.com, a headphones shop, and appmerce.com, a software plugin shop. Both now accept Bitcoin through our plugin (in private beta). We will scale up security proportional to the amount of funds stored at eCash.io.

We gaan Nederlandse winkeliers direct in EUR uitbetalen. Groeten, eCash.io

This looks as bad as a nigerian scam. Taking people's money without even posting an address on your website. Even your whois is hidden.
The coins we invest in, still have to be mined, and we are paid 1.111% per day, not all at once!
Haha! What a joke!
There should be crypto-police and these guys should be arrested immediately.
