It isn't rumored, it is known that Bitfinex owns tether. The problem with tether is that it's suppose to be pegged to the USD but huge amounts of tether is getting made and it could all just be backed by nothing.

This market is very fragile it doesn't take much to go up or go down. Market cap is irrelevant.
