2001  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pro-Trump rioters breach Capitol, forcing lockdown; one person shot... on: January 07, 2021, 12:37:48 AM
This nonsense should be condemned in the strongest way possible.

I can't say that I am surprised though. The credibility of enforcing the law was lost over the summer when BLM rioters were allowed to riot and loot without consequence. There were too many irregularities in the election for Trump supporters to believe the election was fair.

If you don't want this kind of nonsense, both sides should play by the rules.
2002  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: January 06, 2021, 04:10:03 AM

Guess this election is over, already. Dem's take both seats. Democrats outperformed in almost all the counties that I looked at and Atlanta still hasn't reported which will, at minimum, split like 80/20 democrat. Looked all over the map and couldn't find any areas in which GOP were outperforming.

I wouldn’t count the chickens before the eggs hatch.

Republicans are underperforming in many rural countries, but not by a lot.

I think both races will come down to DeKalb county, which is apparently taking a long time to count ballots. Only about 40% of voting locations reporting.

I am surprised that Warnock is outperforming Ossoff considering that Warnock is apparently a wife beater.
2003  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: tBTC - Need help on: January 05, 2021, 04:09:34 AM
I really need test bitcoins, but the faucets either don't work or give very little. Therefore, I ask who is not difficult to send me a test bitcoin to this address -  2N1mGG162VJKTfJNvBdqfjNKXjzLAdPeAjr  (send only test bitcoins)

I have caused some tBTC to be sent to your address, ee6d881d0e52c1b3246e87a50cd4b567609b012806d0a443b6f9b6e3e9704098.

If this is not enough, you should adjust your code by however many factors of 10 accordingly.
2004  Other / Meta / Re: What does it take for someone to get banned? on: January 05, 2021, 04:02:56 AM
It takes a lot for someone to be banned, and it should. When someone is banned, they are permanently removed from our community, and they have no opportunity to improve their contributions. If someone is causing major disruptions, banning may be appropriate, but should never be something that is taken lightly.

So we have your standard junk poster out there begging for money:
https://loyce.club/archive/members/295/2955699.html
This person appears to not be making any kind of contribution to the community. I reviewed some of his posts, and it looks like he is trying to get some coin via (likely fake) "sob" stories.

I will sometimes send a PM to someone I see is breaking forum rules left and right in order to try to get them to change for the better.
2005  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: January 05, 2021, 03:40:09 AM
What are the chances that one democrat wins and one Republican wins?

I get that people will go down to the polls and just vote down party lines, meaning in pairs of Republicans or in pairs of democrats, but I wonder if Warnock brings any intersectional advantage to the table that would drive people towards him and just him.

Just food for thought.
Both Democrat candidates have their own unique baggage that voters might not want to vote for (in addition to being extremists).

I think it is more likely that some voters will decide they are unwilling to vote for an anti semite or a wifebeater than uncontrollable features that TwitchySeal describes above.

IMO, it is most likely the GOP will sweep both Senate seats, but the next most likely outcome is a split. A Democrat sweep would result in the market/economy crashing on Wednessday.
2006  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: tBTC loans on: January 05, 2021, 03:29:27 AM
This sounds a lot like you are trying to profit from your testnet coin. In other words, it sounds like you are trying to assign value to your testnet coin. You should not do this.

tBTC is intended to aid the development of bitcoin and bitcoin services. By requiring transaction fees to be paid, you are effectively receiving value in exchange for your tBTC. You are also creating a market for tBTC.

Most tBTC faucets allow people to receive small amounts of tBTC, and ask that users return unused tBTC once their testing is complete. IMO this is how tBTC should be distributed to devs wanting to build/test bitcoin-related services.
2007  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Kracken! on: January 05, 2021, 03:16:19 AM
Why would Trump go to prison? I think democrats will forget about him the moment he is out of office as he drifts into irrelevancy. I like to think of it like the time Trump promised a special prosecutor for Hillary Clinton. The moment he won, he dropped the act really quick.
The extremists in the Biden administration (such as Harris and those associated with Harris) want Trump in prison because they want to stomp out dissent, and want to prevent him from influencing voters. Unlike Clinton, Trump has a large base that is specific to him. Also, in the beginning of the Trump administration, Clinton largely was discrediting the Trump Presidency via proxies, while Trump will likely personally discredit the Biden administration.
2008  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Kracken! on: January 04, 2021, 06:15:47 AM

Trump appears to be torpedoing any chance he will get reelected in 2024 and harming the chances Republicans will retains control of the Senate. Assuming of course the recording is real. In theory, it is possible a GAN was used to make it seam as if each of the respective voices were talking.

If Trump was not leaving office in two weeks, he would probably get impeached/removed from office over this. He will probably pardon everyone involved, but you really cannot defend this kind of behavior.

I've already come to peace with losing both GA seats so that isn't a big deal to me.

I don't think it's a good look. But Trump has openly called for votes being thrown so this is quite literally on par. Yes, quite the low bar.
At this point, Trump does not have the political capital to get the 2020 Presidential election thrown out via Congress.

I don't see why Trump is trying to get the election results overturned via Congress. This will only hurt Republicans in 2022, and in the GA special election in two days. Losing the special election risks legislation that will stack the cards against Republicans forever, preventing them from ever winning the Presidency again, will make it more difficult to win close House/Senate seats in the future, and will give Democrats a 4 seat advantage in the Senate. It will also likely result in a stacked Supreme Court, which could ignore any Pardon Trump gives himself/his family, and could result in Trump having to go to prison for political reasons.

Overall, Trump is being stupid.

2010  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning doesn´t solve the scaling problem on: January 04, 2021, 05:39:25 AM
LN can facilitate and is useful for micro-transactions, but this is not the only use case for LN. LN can be used for transactions of any size, provided there is sufficient LN network capacity.

True, but is it practical to send big amount of BTC through LN? I doubt many people would lock big amount of BTC on LN channel and finding routing would be near impossible.
Today it is unusual for large amounts of coin to be locked up in LN channels. I don't think this will be true forever, especially as more merchants/businesses start to accept payments via LN.

I would also hope that in the future, payments can be split up via multiple routes if there was insufficient capacity via any one route.
2011  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Offline signing your paper wallet using air gapped phone via Electrum on: January 04, 2021, 05:34:37 AM
... If you write down the seed, someone could view the seed while you are writing it down, or while you are importing the seed into an air-gapped computer/phone, or while you are transporting the paper wallet from your secure location to the location of your computer.

The chances of the above happening may be low, however, they are non-zero, and are in addition to the scope of vulnerabilities of having a wallet stored on an air-gapped computer/phone.

I think we all understand what you are saying, but this boils down to physical security already. If you do everything in a separate room, or one you properly prepared (or you can do what Snowden does and hides under a dark blanket), fire up some white noise or turn up the TV volume to mask ...

"So, there is a chance?" = that depends on how you do it.

For most people, they should not worry about it too much. For people like me who hold other people's coins in escrow, I've grown a habit of doing most of the things I mentioned above and then some; it doesn't hurt that I have other forms of physical security as well, armed guards at the gates, etc. If some government were to specifically target you, then you are screwed no matter what.

Everyone else, 0.000001% or 1 in ^256 = for all intents and purposes is impossible. (Peppa Pig says whistling is impossible! Just put your lips together and blow? It's impossible!)
There is an additional chance, and there are additional precautions (costs) you can take to reduce these additional chances, but they are nonzero.

Or you could eliminate these additional chances by not using a paper wallet. While I do use paper wallets as a backup to my private keys, by default I will not use a paper wallet for accessing cold storage.
2012  Other / Meta / Re: Plagiarism | what %age should be allowed? on: January 04, 2021, 05:30:34 AM
Again If one is spinning the text, changing one word from seven to avoid plag, still it needs to be credited otherwise it will come under the theft category.
I can't imagine a situation in which someone is acting in good faith and is using a text spinner to create a whitepaper.

If a whitepaper is inadvertently missing a quotation or citation, the author should promptly fix it once this is pointed out. A number of missing citations is not necessarily an indication the project is a scam. I think ultimately, good judgment needs to be used when evaluating if a project is a scam based on a whitepaper and missing citations. You can ask if the missing citations substantially change the chances of success in the eyes of a reasonable person. You can ask if the missing citations are indicative that the project is a substantial copy of another project with few substantive details changed.

Happy new year!

As a FYI, the avatar in the OP remains the Santa Clause looking guy. Being that the Christmas season is behind us, I am not sure if that is what you/roobet wants us to be wearing. I have no qualms wearing any roobet related avatar.
2014  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why are you guys tagging Lauda's account? on: January 04, 2021, 05:13:53 AM
The scenarios you describe are applicable to any forum member with positive trust. It would probably be more likely to happen to a more active user because the Lauda account will show as last active as of a long time ago.

It's not as if it's an equivalency where all users thereby deserve negative trust to invite more awareness, although theymos should definitely do some trust feedback backlink on first-time PMs. The difference between Lauda and active users is that they can respond. It's a unique situation, bearing in mind the only other candidate we have to offer is satoshi, whoever they are. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Again, anyone who were to visit Lauda's profile would see that he last logged into his account in October 2020. The time between the current date and the last logged in time should set off red flags to trading partners (even if it was the 'real' person behind the account).

We have also seen that the ability to respond to a PM is not a sufficient safeguard against these types of attacks. Someone was recently able to scam using The Pharmacist's name/reputation by impersonating him. A scammer could go a step further and study a person's posting patterns to conclude their sleeping patterns and/or times in which they are unlikely to respond to any PMs they receive.
2015  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Strange Nashville bombing on: January 04, 2021, 04:44:33 AM

Article talks about Nashville PD but there's also articles you can find about the FBI being tipped off about this guy and doing nothing.

The FBI ran a background check on the person and was unable to find any information connecting him to criminal activity or the military or bomb making.

The RV was apparently behind a fence and law enforcement was unable to see inside the RV. I understand that there wasn’t any crime alleged that the person committed. There needs to be probable cause that the person committed a crime to obtain a search warrant.

I understand that law enforcement tried to make contact with the person, but he would not answer the door.
2016  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why are you guys tagging Lauda's account? on: January 03, 2021, 09:15:52 PM
isn't lauda's account permanently banned by theymos? is there any possibility a parma banned account can be hacked and start posting and scamming people?
her bitcointalk account have no chance to be hacked and used for scam or impersonating.
It's not necessary to own the same account to impersonate the user.

Let me toss a few scenarios and see what sticks. There's always a way to fool someone:

1. 'Lauda' registers on the forum, the username is not recognized as fake and the user links to the original account via a PM to other, ignorant users as an attempt to scam. Users see green trust, automatically trust.
2. Lauda impersonators on other platforms message Newbies, link to original account as proof, use whatever means of social engineering to trick user into believing they are the original Lauda.
You could simply leave some neutrals, but I think the idea of marking an account that is 100% inoperable with a red trust should be done at least once.

The scenarios you describe are applicable to any forum member with positive trust. It would probably be more likely to happen to a more active user because the Lauda account will show as last active as of a long time ago.
2017  Economy / Reputation / Re: Why are you guys tagging Lauda's account? on: January 03, 2021, 06:12:52 PM
What are you talking about? The tags clearly make sense, as their credentials have been compromised. The account cannot be trusted from that point onward.
theymos banned/locked lauda's account to prevent anyone from accessing his account in the future.
I will request that theymos ban the "Lauda" account (u=101872)

Done. Lauda is banned in the same way as satoshi, such that it isn't possible to even log into the account anymore.
Tagging Lauda's account is really not going to protect anyone from anything, IMO
2018  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: January 02, 2021, 10:36:22 PM
I'm curious as to how accurate the polling will be considering how bad they were with some of the senate races in November.  Susan Collin's polling data was atrocious, don't think she was leading in a single poll yet she won the race by near double digits. It's all about who shows up on election day to vote.

That being said, I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that both dem's are going to win and this will largely be Trump's fault. He's creating too much doubt on his election that will undoubtedly keep republicans home. Democrats are energized, and obviously hate Trump so they would love nothing more than to give Joe Biden full congressional control.
If Democrats take the Senate, I would blame Congressman Collins' selfishness in staying in the race even though it was clear he wasn't going to win. If Collins had dropped out, Loeffler would have won handily.

I would agree that Trump's unwillingness to accept the election outcome and/or inability to clearly present a coherent message explaining how the results were illegitimate is going to harm both Perdue and Loffler at the ballot box.

Both Democrat candidates are radical, and Georgia is a red state, even if it went for Biden in November. Biden is moderate, and he outperformed both Democrat Senate candidates in November. I would assume the polling is incorrect, just as they were in November.

Not long after early voting started, there were 50,000 absentee ballots requested from people who did not vote in the general election, which is very suspicious. As of yesterday, about 115k people have cast ballots who did not vote in the general. Democrats tend to vote early and by mail, while Republicans tend to vote on election day in person.

Chuck Schumer has said while campaigning in GA, that he will change the world and America if Democrats win both Senate seats. I don't think the people of GA are comfortable with that.
2019  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning doesn´t solve the scaling problem on: January 02, 2021, 05:32:38 AM
It would take the equivalent of 58 days for each of those 35 million people to make a transaction with the mainlayer. If only ONE THIRD of the worldwide humans ever wanted to make a transaction with the mainlayer, this would take 4290 days! As an example, a person who pays into his pension every month could only do so every 4290 days! (earliest!)

So far to the problem, this is known to us, and why "we" research things like Lightning.

Unfortunately, we now realize that based on the above figures, not even so-called settlement transactions or individual transactions on my Mainnet wallet would be possible, unless I pay fees that are so high that they are no longer in any relation. EVERYTHING that will ever happen on BTC would only happen on the semi-secure second layer which is still in its infancy after 5 years. (Including all of my savings, which I may have set aside for my retirement, would exist for my lifetime only as LBTC, and possibly be managed by a custodial service).

LN channels are opened and closed frequently today because many people are testing and experimenting with LN, and because the number of financial transactions that can be conducted via LN is limited. As LN becomes more established, it will become less common for LN channels to be closed, and there is no technical reason for a LN channel to need to be closed.

Bitcoin adoption is not going to go to 100% of the world's population tomorrow. It likely will be decades before any substantial portion of the world's population is using bitcoin to conduct financial transactions on a regular basis. There are limitations to Moore's law, and it is slowing, however, in the future, the cost of RAM, CPU processing power, and network capacity will decline. My prediction is in the future the maximum block size for bitcoin will be increased in order to allow for more LN channels to be opened/closed.

With LN, you do not need an on-chain transaction every time you receive money or move money to some kind of savings. If you were paying into a pension every month, you would not need to open an additional channel every month if your channels have sufficient inbound capacity (which they should).

LN is also not custodial. If you have an LN channel, you control the private keys that can spend the coin in your open channels.

1. LN is only meant for micro-transaction

LN can facilitate and is useful for micro-transactions, but this is not the only use case for LN. LN can be used for transactions of any size, provided there is sufficient LN network capacity.
2020  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to keep fiat safe while waiting to buy dips? on: January 02, 2021, 05:04:35 AM
I know keeping fiat on any exchange is not wise while waiting.

You should be fine with leaving fiat on exchanges because exchanges getting hacked is mostly concerned with stolen bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and not fiat; Assuming you're actually referring to real fiat money and not stablecoins.
In the past, exchanges have given 'haircuts' to all customer balances when crypto was stolen from the exchange.

This means if an exchange has $100m in total customer assets, $1m in funds in excess of customer assets, and has $11m stolen, customer balances would be reduced by 10%.

Someone wanting to buy coin on dips is going to have to give up some security in exchange for the potential additional profit. If you want to employ this strategy, you should do your own research and deposit fiat on an exchange you believe is financially stable enough to survive a modest loss of funds via a hack, and is overall unlikely to get hacked.
