2021  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [POLL] Let’s say Trump did win the election... on: January 02, 2021, 03:24:27 AM

I've been hearing the 2016 transition period constantly be mischaracterized by right wing media in attempt to make Trumps behavior appear acceptable, so let me remind everyone of what happened between election day and the day Trump took office.
The Obama administration also briefed Trump on the Steele dossier (that was later described by someone in the Obama administration as "unverified") and immediately leaked this to the press. The Obama administration also made it so many more within the government had access to information regarding Russia than was necessary, and leaked this to the press, in an effort to imply that the information implicated Trump in wrongdoing, while in reality, there was never any evidence that the Trump administration colluded with Russia.

Clinton called Trump to congratulate him and the day after the election said this in her concession speech:
She also said that she could beat Trump "again", among other things that showed she did not accept the results of the election.

Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power
The Obama administration took many steps to prevent Trump from implementing his policies (exercise his power, as vested by the Constitution). For example, Sally Yates (an Obama administration holdover) refused to defend Trump's travel ban that was later found constitutional by the Supreme Court.
2022  Other / Meta / Re: Plagiarism | what %age should be allowed? on: January 01, 2021, 10:51:11 PM
I don't know if there is already a conversation about How much percentage of plagiarism should be allowed to different projects in their Whiteperp/ litepaper or whatever they call it.
In the context of whitepapers, anything that is not original research by the author(s) should be cited. This means if the author(s) used another source for a fact, they should cite it. The entire paper should be written by themselves, and anything that is copied should be quoted and cited.

By doing the above, the author(s) are transparent as to how much original research they have conducted. It is very well possible that a project could have real value with no original research if they have used many unique sources to combine several ideas together.
2023  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to get multiple addresses belonging to the same person on: January 01, 2021, 10:38:53 PM
These only provide a "likeliness" rather than concretely proving that the addresses are connected. Its very much guesswork, and the addresses should probably be monitored to see if send from the same output several times, to increase the likelihood that the addresses are connected. So, although its a good system, and usually is indicative that the addresses are related, it doesn't exactly mean the addresses are connected without a shadow of doubt.
It is really not possible to prove beyond any doubt that two addresses are connected to the same person. There is always the possibility that the person would claim something along the lines of that they sometimes sign transactions with another party for whatever reason.

I think the OP is probably trying to create a tool similar to walletexplorer.com (there are several that sell their services). Anyone developing this kind of tool will need to strike a balance between what level of certainty they want to have and the number of false negatives (saying that two addresses are not connected to the same person when they are) they are comfortable with.
2024  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [POLL] Let’s say Trump did win the election... on: January 01, 2021, 10:28:00 PM
In 2009 when President Bush was leaving office, and transferring power to the new Obama administration, both political parties, including President Bush acknowledged the election was legitimate.

The same cannot be said in 2017 when President Obama was leaving office and preparing to transfer power to the Trump administration. The Obama administration took steps to imply that Russia had gotten Trump elected and that Trump was not a legitimate President. Democrats did the same and pushed unfounded conspiracy theories without any evidence including mainstream Democrats.

Now Trump is trying to delegitimize the Biden Presidency. Unfortunately, his messaging strategy is poor, and in the event he would be able to stay in power, he would be seen as an illegitimate President.

My point is that both major party candidates and both major parties should agree on who should be in power at the start of the next Presidential term. This is ultimately what is best for the belief in the integrity of America's election system. The candidate that won the election should be in power, regardless of if the other candidate was widely announced as the winner. If there is a dispute, it is up to the court system to resolve any disputes according to the constitution and written law.

Election laws and procedures should be clearly defined prior to the start of elections, and they should not change once voters have started casting their votes. It is up to the state legislatures to write election laws, according to the constitution. Unfortunately, in states that Biden won by slim margins, election laws were not followed according to the state legislatures, and procedures were not followed, including allowing election observers from both parties to observe the casting of ballots and the counting of ballots. These are not technicalities, and IMO should be sufficient to throw out the election results. It would be best to call for a new election in these states, and for the election laws and procedures to be followed exactly as written according to state legislatures.

As a technical matter, whatever happens on January 6 will cement who will be President at noon on January 21. My assumption is that Biden will be President at this time.

There is not going to be evidence that votes were changed, or that votes were cast without the person actually casting the votes unless some of the conspiracy theories about Dominion voting machines turn out to be true, which I would find doubtful. The only evidence that will be available is that of irregularities. If additional, substantial evidence of irregularities and/or voter fraud is discovered and is credible, it may be grounds to impeach both Biden and Harris.

As an ancap, I think that it'd be best <> for the US to eventually fall apart.
If this were to happen, most likely either China or another communist nation would take over what used to be the US, and the rest of the West. You would be living in a "utopia" but not the utopia you would be wishing for, it would be a communist "utopia".

The Cold War was about stopping/reversing the spread of Communism throughout the world. The same is true for the Vietnam and Korean wars. A weak or nonexistent US government would mean there would be nothing to stop Communist countries from exerting their influence on the rest of the world. This is largely how the Europeans were able to take over America from the Indians.

The guy has been able to keep the Republican party united and whipped
Pelosi and Schumer have done a much better job at this. If AOC takes Schumer's senate seat, expect Democrat senators to be less united. Ditto if Pelosi is not elected as Speaker for the next Congress regarding Democrat house representatives.

I suspect the $2000 stimulus payment will make its way to the Senate floor for a vote before the end of the session. It should pass, and it should be voted on before the special GA senate election.
2027  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Coronavirus Outbreak on: December 30, 2020, 04:25:11 AM
https://www.denverpost.com/2020/12/29/new-covid-19-variant-colorado - And so it begins. New COVID-19 strain, the one originally identified in the UK, has its first confirmed case in Colorado. Looks like a young 20-year-old who has not left the country got infected with the new variant strain. The strain is allegedly 70% more infectious. So what happens now?
He most likely got infected via community spread. Not everyone who has the virus will get tested. I don't think the strain is more dangerous other than the fact that it is more infectious.

Vaccination is starting, so hopefully, this will slow the transmission of the virus, including via the new strain.
2028  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Strange happening cutting and pasteing a bitcoin address. on: December 30, 2020, 04:10:52 AM
My guess is you are infected with malware. You should stop using the computer/device that you are encountering this issue on immediately. You should especially not enter any passwords, or unlock any encryption keys, as they may become compromised.

This is assuming you have never interacted with the ...xax address in the past. If for whatever reason, you were previously interacting with this address and intentionally had the address in your clipboard, this could be an issue with your keyboard, or with your computer's ability to recognize a "copy" command.

Haven't sent any coin in months.  First time. Oh well, I'll be busy for the next couple days. Bah Humbug
Follow ranochigo's advice. Stop using whatever device you encountered this issue on immediately. If you can, use an entirely new device and start fresh. Otherwise, use a second device to reformat your hard drive. You should not trust any output that the affected device displays.
2029  Other / Meta / Re: Reporter Statistics on: December 30, 2020, 04:04:54 AM
Aw, too bad I missed the perfect 2000 report number, but the number seems nice considering when we are right now:

Quote
You have reported 2020 posts with 99% accuracy (1923 good, 29 bad, 68 unhandled).

PS Global mods: if by any chance you see a lot of reports in the spanish boards and have some doubts as to what to do with them, you can just PM me and I'll solve your every doubt (wink, wink) please don't let them expire
You have reported 2020 posts? If I were you, I would report at least one additional post quickly, even if the report is invalid.

I don't want your computer bursting into flames, or something really bad happening.

2032  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How many of you check the code of open source software? on: December 30, 2020, 03:08:29 AM
There is no doubt that open-source software is better compared to closed-source software.
I don't think this is an open and shut discussion as you describe.

For something such as bitcoin that is very widely used and involved in billions of dollars worth of transactions, the software will be scrutinized by many experts, and vulnerabilities/bugs will be found and corrected. For software that is less widely used, the code will be less scrutinized, and there is a greater chance that someone acting maliciously will find a vulnerability without disclosing it.

Say for example that an exchange creates their own software that their exchange runs on from scratch. Would making the software open source make it better? If the software is open source, if the devs employed by the exchange inadvertently leave open a vulnerability, an attacker could find the vulnerability by reviewing the code and/or pen testing the software on their own implementation. On the other hand, if the software is closed source, an attacker would need to find the vulnerability by attacking the implementation run by the exchange, and any pen-testing could be detected by reviewing logs.

To answer the OP's question:
If I am building something on top of open-sourced software, I will review the relevant parts of the documentation, and if necessary the code itself so I can understand how something works. If something is not working as expected, I will review the code, surrounding what I am trying to do, and either correct my mistake or change the code in the software.
2033  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there any research on different key-value DBs suitable for bitcoin? on: December 30, 2020, 02:47:53 AM
First off you wouldn't want to use a SQL database for any bitcoin data because you'd have to shoehorn the key/value data into relational format with tables, primary keys and all that special stuff. This leaves only NoSQL databases as a viable option, and wouldn't be end-user disruptive because nobody moves around the chainstate database.
Why don't you like using relational tables and pkeys? Storing your data this way ensures that you are only accessing the exact data you need when making a query.

The schema of a database storing the blockchain, and data required to use a wallet are not going to change. IMO the biggest advantage of NoSQL databases over SQL databases is the flexibility in storing documents/records, but I really don't think that is necessary for any bitcoin-related use case.
2034  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How much will Joe Biden earn if he become US president 2021? on: December 29, 2020, 05:56:55 AM
End of story - 400K a year, as that’s his mandated salary.
The Biden family made plenty of money while Joe Biden was Senator and Vice President by selling access to Joe Biden. I would assume this would continue while Biden is President.
2035  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Offline signing your paper wallet using air gapped phone via Electrum on: December 29, 2020, 05:53:38 AM
and in addition will be subject to additional vulnerabilities when you print your paper wallet,

i just want to point out that if you create an HD paper wallet where you write down the mnemonic words on paper then there is no need for printing anything so you avoid the vulnerability that involves printers.
This is true, however, it will not solve the problem I described. If you write down the seed, someone could view the seed while you are writing it down, or while you are importing the seed into an air-gapped computer/phone, or while you are transporting the paper wallet from your secure location to the location of your computer.

The chances of the above happening may be low, however, they are non-zero, and are in addition to the scope of vulnerabilities of having a wallet stored on an air-gapped computer/phone.
2036  Other / Meta / Re: Posting/reporting limits on: December 29, 2020, 05:46:19 AM
I was using multiple tabs to report posts.
I've ran into the limit so many times. I now report in one tab, wait for it to finish loading the page, close the tab, and only then report the next tab. This makes reporting 50 posts quite slow, so I don't often report that many at once anymore.
There was one person (presumably) making the same 3 posts with several dozen accounts that I found via the patrol. This was presumably some kind of spambot, so time is of the essence to get these posts removed before search engines can index the posts. I could create a tool that queues my reports, but that is besides the point. These posts need to be removed quickly, and I believe I have reported enough posts, and have contributed enough (look at my merit) to have a lower wait time.

But like other said, 4 seconds is very little duration. And concern is if you are trying to catch up with it means you are trying to keep your hands busy like a robot. Wanting to continue with this pace with your human hands - may end up breaking your keyboard :-D
I had identified many posts that had the same problem. I kept the report message in my clipboard and pasted the message in each report as a way to quickly report the posts.

Just queue things up while you're not prepared to post. If anything, you can always sneak a post in while your reports are being sent - it'll only pause one - and continue in the list.
I am not concerned about my ability to make many posts quickly. I ~always spend much more than 4 seconds on each post I write.
2037  Economy / Reputation / Re: Warning: I don't use telegram! The Pharmacist impersonator is active there on: December 28, 2020, 06:10:01 PM
I would suggest that you add a note to your profile alerting anyone looking that you don’t use telegram. This way if you can’t respond to a PM quickly, any potential victims can see a note saying that you don’t use telegram.
2038  Other / Meta / Re: Posting/reporting limits on: December 28, 2020, 06:40:04 AM

I am whitelisted by virtue of my copper membership. My understanding is my whitelisting gives me a maximum of one action every 4 seconds, which is not frequent enough.

I have seen that table. I am not trying to send mass PMs.

I was using multiple tabs to report posts. I had identified a spam bot that used many accounts to make substantially similar posts and needed to report many posts at once. Creating a bot to report the posts would have resulted in the spam bot being able to make spam posts faster than I could report posts (in theory).
2039  Other / Meta / Re: Posting/reporting limits on: December 28, 2020, 06:02:20 AM
Is there anything I can do to have these limits increased?
To increase the limit you have to rank up to legendary (2 seconds)
According to this post the smallest limit to actions (such as posts and reports) is 4 seconds.

4 seconds isn't long to wait IMO, and I guess that's enough to prevent spamming the server to post submission of reports unless there's a way to increase it to 3-2 sec.
I was trying to report many posts at ~once, and 4 seconds was too long for me. If I were to build a bot to report posts, 4 seconds would be well below how quickly a bot could identify spam posts.
2040  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Donating Bitcoin and IRS form 8283 on: December 28, 2020, 05:59:20 AM
*not tax advice*
I understand that the appraised fair market value would be the price of bitcoin times the number of bitcoin you are donating.
My advice would be to contract with a tax professional who is familiar with your individual tax situation to help you fill out this form.

If it were only that simple ...

Quote
<...>

The basis for my suggestion is as follows:
Quote
Section A. Include in Section A only the following items.
1. Items (or groups of similar items as defined later) for
which you claimed a deduction of more than $500 but not
more than $5,000 per item (or group of similar items).
2. The following items even if the claimed value was
more than $5,000 per item (or group of similar items):
a. Securities listed on an exchange in which
quotations are published daily,
b. Securities regularly traded in national or regional
over-the-counter markets for which published quotations
are available,
As mentioned previously, I would suggest contacting a tax professional with knowledge of your specific tax situation who can give you individualized tax advice.

It may come down to you having to file your taxes a certain way, and seeing how it plays out in court if there is no prior precedent.

I would be surprised if there is case law regarding donations of bitcoin.
