Probably a stupid question but how much space would be needed for a db of every hash and value?
Well "every value" is simply an infinite number. However to store say every passphrase using printable symbol on a standard keyboard (95) up to a length of 20 would be 95^20 = 3.58 x 10^39 records If we assume no overhead and an average of 10.5 bytes for the input and 32 bytes for the hash that would be: 1.52 x 10^41 bytes ~152,356,517,023,630,000,000,000,000,000 1 TB hard drives. The earth has about 1.3x10^50 atoms so even storing 1 bit per atom it would take up roughly a planet sized body. Of course if the user had salt their hash wouldn't exist in your database. To account for every 32 bit salt would require ~4 billion earth sized planets. So you're saying there's a chance... LOL +1 "Dumb and Dumber"

Was there any reason that the number 210,000 was chosen as the block reward reduction?

In October 2011 World population was estimated to have surpassed the 7 billionth person. Since then world population has increased by a net growth of around 45million people (August 11 2012, about 10 months later)
Just off the cuff, that does not sound right. At that rate, it would take us 20 years to grow to 8 billion. I'll see if I can find some facts to back myself up.

Where the heck do you live that they can charge you $40 tax on a $20 item?
I live in Canada, and ordered a small, $3 laptop fan from a company in the states. Ended up paying about $40 in import fees. "Free trade" my ass.

I hope everyone can comment with more reasoning and less assumptions. I'm trying my best to calm down and attempt to get more information about the hacker, because he also used my email for a credit card fraud case. It's possible to discover something at that direction.
I have also listed a few people who know this secret email of mine. And I'm going to question them one by one tonight.
I'm definitely on the side of Bitcoinica customers and I believe that if the real hacker really had ties with me personally like what MagicalTux said, I may be able to recover majority of the amount back if the hacker can be warned. This issue is very serious and if I'm the hacker, I would definitely return the full amount back to reduce the criminal punishment.
The hacker seems to be a Chinese because he used Chinese punctuations in his English messages in the Aurumxchange ticket.
I will provide any information needed to the police once Bitcoinica files a police report.
Now that makes no sense. You steal the funds just to return them to reduce criminal punishment? LOL But if the thief says he is sorry, then it is ok, right? In this community, apparently so.

AurumXChange has falsely accused me of being a paid employee of Zhou Tong, so I'm kind of in a unique position where I know for a fact they are more than willing to make false, irresponsible accusations with no evidence, or inadequate evidence.
Rarity and Maged have falsely accused me of threatening to hurt Zhou Tong, and wanting to hire a hitman, so I'm kind of in a unique position where I know for a fact Rarity and Maged are more than willing to make false, irresponsible accusations with no evidence, or inadequate evidence.

Even on investor boards full of pumpers and dumpers, I don't see the hostility that goes on here.
How do most of you put up with this?
I want to apologize for my hostility the last couple days. I won't attack Zhou Tong anymore on this forum.

This has moved to "Off-Topic" by the mods to let it die. We have stated our opinions - let's let everyone make up their mind.
You have the power to lock the thread, but regardless I won't be paying anymore attention.

I'll be setting up a different venue for this investigation, and the relevant parties will be notified by email. To make Rarity happy, I won't post any more information here on this forum. Sorry I caused such a huge stir with my general comment about society. I sincerely apologize to those I offended or annoyed.

If someone wishes to get a PI to investigate ZT, that's absolutely ok. However, I cannot allow mlawrence or anyone else who even jokingly threatens violence against ZT to publicly gather funds to "investigate" ZT, unless they are directly giving the payment information for a legitimate PI. Anything short of that could potentially leave the forum liable for any illegal action taken against ZT, since the issue was reported to the moderation team. If it wasn't reported, I could care less what you guys do, as long as you're on-topic in the threads you post in. However, this was reported with significant evidence that the funds might be used to hire a hitman. We both know no one even jokingly threatened anyone with violence. And YOU were the first person to ever use the term hitman - right there. But I understand your need to help out someone who generously gave $$ to this forum. In any case, I understand the forum's legal obligation on this, so I will set up a separate venue to post information on the case once it is received from the PI.

BAM, $10 bitches!
It started climbing after Bitcoinica shut down - is that a coincidence? (Not trying to start anything - serious question - I'm all for higher values)

7. Matthew N. Write, while Editor in Chief of Bitcoin Magazine, and likely also the heart and soul of it, when posting on this forum is expressing his own opinions which are not necessarily the same as opinions of Bitcoin Magazine or its publisher. Matthew does not own a controlling stake in the company. Bitcoin Magazine is a product of collaboration of fairly large team.
You could greatly increase the reputation of your magazine by removing Matthew from his position. Myself, like many others, won't be going near your publication while he is around.

It was a genuine mistake on my part. Apologies again to mlawrence and LoupGaroux.
No worries. I can only wish to be as well written as LG.

Without blaming anyone, I would like to suggest a better way to handle similar situations in the future:
Release about half of the information to the suspect privately, and give him 12 hours to explain himself. This way you can use his explanation to check against the other half of the evidence, to determine whether it's a made up story or plausible truth.
After 12 hours, post the full evidence alongside with the explanation in public. It also protects privacy and encourages the community to act in a neutral manner.
I never understood why you wanted to protect the privacy of a person you claim framed you for a $500,000 theft. Do whatever you want Zhou, but I am posting right now to tell you this: With the interest I have received, we should be hiring a PI early next week. This PI will locate you in Australia and allow us to file an official theft complaint with the Australian police. It will then be between you and the police to determine if "Chen" does indeed exist. If he doesn't, YOU will be the one going to prison for several years. If he does happen to exist, then you can be fully exonerated in the community, and we can turn our attention on him. Be advised that the police are not going to accept your wish to keep his identity secret. This one simple step is going to flush all the bullshit stories that have been floating around this forum.

A police report from China really isn't what you think it would be. If like me, you live in a Western country and have a decent police force you might be mistaken in thinking that this would be a good way to go about things.
In China, you can 'influence' how a police officer sees things with something as simple as a carton of cigarettes. If you don't want to deal with a strong headed police officer then you can see the political head of that region and explain to them why the matter should go away. Also, when you're not present locally, it would be very hard to make a report, especially for something so complex.
It's one thing for the local police in China to deal with a local theft of physical goods but it's quite another for them to deal with a crypto-currency with multiple international jurisdictions.
While all this may be true, it doesn't stop Zhou from filing a police report. However, no matter how corrupt, the police would probably ask simple questions like "What is his name?, what is his phone number? " etc. Since Zhou would be unable to provide this, the police would quickly realize Zhou is making this guy up. You and I can't demand Zhou provide proof, but they would certainly demand proof when Zhou filed an official report. This is why until Zhou files a police report, a reasonable person has to assume he is making it all up.
