2081  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another exchange hacked, Liquid exchange. on: August 19, 2021, 12:39:47 PM
I wonder how much funds the cold wallets were holding and if any effects will be passed on to users of the exchange or if the exchange can afford such a hack.

It'd be weird if exchanges did store kyc data online, realistically those should be stored offline for reference once the verification steps are complete.

The hacker(s) seemed to do quite a few transactions to get all of the funds though which seems quite strange, perhaps the exchange thought it had better security than it did by trying to diversify their wallets a bit?
2082  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question on Blockchain wallet and new coin to come on: August 19, 2021, 01:09:29 AM

The way I got invited was from a tinder match (i spoke to the gal on WhatsApp (voice) so at least she is a girl. We began to spoke of other stuff but after a few days she told me she was investing and pointed out where.

Could you identifyuch about her accent? Did she seem like a local or not? I know it's possible to change locations on tinder now so it mightve just been someone trying to come up with an innovative way of scamming.

2083  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Binance Futures - Leveraging Risks on: August 19, 2021, 12:30:43 AM
No it is not possible to lose more than your margin while leveraging.

Most exchanges have buffer solutions for liquidating positions to incur as little risk as possible for both the exchange and the user. For crypto, it's normally a small amount of the margin that's collected as an "insurance fund/pool" and for other assets it might be done by triggering other orders or refinancing assets temporarily on the side of the exchange to balance everything back out.
2084  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question on Blockchain wallet and new coin to come on: August 18, 2021, 10:28:11 PM
Something called a blockchain wallet should be findable on blockchain.com - if not, it's likely a scam.

I think you should endeavour to do a decent amount of research on an altcoin before you invest (if you don't want to take on too much risk). You could at least find the coin's website, forum or github to see how it does and it's community.
2085  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: ByBit in the UK on: August 18, 2021, 08:43:25 PM
Do you know of an exchange you could suggest to me?  How about spread betting?  Thanks.

Thank you both for your replies?

Not sure about anyone else but I think coinbase have managed to keep up with all of the new regulations so they might be one to look at and go with - they're quite well established in the crypto community too and are probably one of the oldest (still running) exchanges in the specter.
2086  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why can forums cultivate the ability to think independently? on: August 18, 2021, 11:30:02 AM
Forums are generally good for encouraging discussions and getting people to think about things too before they say/interpret something the way they want to.

I think a lot of older people get news from only one source that aligns with their ideology too so it might help to break that down.

There's also at least 3 main types of English used on this forum too (European, American and Asian) and if you're not experienced in another's dialect you have to reread posts or infer by context sometimes which all take more time and watching a video and deciding not to rewind it - because the narrator didn't emphasise the word...

You can actually do things to make yourself more engaged in videos though, the best way I've found is to turn on subtitles and start following those as well as the speaker to try to keep yourself focussed on it (if you feel the video is of particular importance).
2087  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to avoid cryptocurrency transaction Error. on: August 18, 2021, 11:16:13 AM
I'd say you should copy and paste wherever possible and either check the first and last 5 characters match (after the "1" or "3" for bitcoin) or check the first, last and one middle 3 characters. If you pay more attention to certain parts I think you're more likely to pick up when there's a problem.
2088  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Forum Skills on: August 18, 2021, 12:22:14 AM
I don't think there's much knowledge with paywalls these days.

Sure you pay extra for a well polished course or a qualification but if you're just doing stuff for fun - leave it that way unless you can get something more out of it that still keeps it fun.

If you're wanting to gain technical crypto knowledge from the forum - the best place to go is to look at the technical and beginners boards. If you find a topic where a newbie has asked a newbie type question, it's very likely there are links in the responses to the thread or things explained in ways you'll be able to understand (either for if you're not very technical for certain responses or too technical for others that they seem ambiguous).

It's important to remember everyone has gaps in their understanding. No one person can understand everything of one particular field but you'll always be able to learn more and get excited about your new knowledge as a tradeoff for that.
2089  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: ByBit in the UK on: August 17, 2021, 10:47:27 PM
You're unlikely to be able to buy or sell with bybit unless you have dual nationality you can use.

I can login to bybit and use it from the UK, my account with a UK mobile number got suspended (withdrawals being the only thing allowed). It's the financial conduct authority that banned them and a few other exchanges for non-compliance.

2090  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: send crypto from existing paper wallet on: August 17, 2021, 03:25:12 PM
I think the safest and easiest way for bitcoin imports is probably to use electrum to import the private keys.

Be sure to check what letters the address starts with as you might have to adjust the private keys if there's no abbreviation on them.

If the private keys begin with a P or your address begins with a 1 then you can just input them normally, otherwise you might need to add extra letters to tell the client what address you're wanting to import.

I think metamask or myetherwallet.com are the best to use with ethereum - I'd use Google to find them and click on the first non-ad result.

Once both are imported, you can then make a new wallet with a mnemonic phrase which cna be written down and used as a backup for your new wallet (you can leave a version online too).
2091  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Metal Stand Blueprint for asics? on: August 17, 2021, 01:55:22 PM
You might want to move this to the mining board to get more of an input for what active miners are using - the move button is at the bottom left.

I've seen a lot of people use just normal shelving units you can find in most places (like the ones shops use) but a lot of them seem to have slats in them to allow for better air flow.
2092  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you put away your arrogance? on: August 17, 2021, 10:47:08 AM
I think the fork argument kinda makes sense but no fork from bitcoin has become large enough to overtake it. He might've been following the bcash/bsv news and thought it was a rival (when it really wasn't).

I do think bitcoin is quite inefficient electricity wise only though, there are probably improvements that could be made to make it more reliable with less electricity needed.

People have gambled on bitcoin and do still, you're not going to get past that. An investment in bitcoin might be likened to an investment in a new tech firm that hasn't yet produced a year's worth of profits or have been performing at a loss until they get big enough... You're investing in the team, the hardware and the currency by investing in the currency.
2093  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How many consecutive looses can you handle in trading? on: August 16, 2021, 08:44:09 PM
With me it can take anywhere between 2-4 but I do mainly long-timeframe trades. Essentially anything I think isn't a breakout from too much of a rise in volume or too little resistence, I normally assume it's me that's wrong.
2094  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What's the difference between Bitget and Etoro in terms of copy trading? on: August 16, 2021, 01:52:42 PM
I don't think copy trading is a good place to start with trading, especially if you're new.

Someone making good returns really often are likely going to get stopped - especially if they're using leverage. I'd advise you either learn how to trade or just invest in an etf and bitcoin (maybe 95% stock etf : 5% bitcoin).

I don't have any experience doing copy trading though and I know etoro has people who have been able to turn positive for 7 years plus - but so have a lot of Index funds so...
2095  Other / Meta / Re: Is this a forum bug? on: August 16, 2021, 09:34:29 AM
I think it'd show up on your post history fine since it's your image. Not sure about people seeing others' post history though.

Edit i just checked your post history and saw it, it might be that there's more security with post history (eg no "reply" buttons that have session codes)?
2096  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ledger Nano S/ Hardware wallet Question? on: August 16, 2021, 12:19:06 AM
Most hardware wallets generate private keys and public keys on the device, public keys are sent to the computer while private keys remain on the device.

The public keys on the computer (which get hashed into addresses) are what are used to signify if they have funds - if someone has sent them bitcoin. By nature of bitcoins algorithm, you need the private keys to spend any funds so your funds will be as secure as either the device or wherever you wrote your mnemonic.

If you used the official app and got the hardware from an official store then your crypto will only be spendable from the hardware wallet (or anything with access to the mnemonic phrase).
2097  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does copper membership limit rank? on: August 15, 2021, 11:53:54 PM
If you want to know the real rank of a user wearing copper membership, just visit one of his/her posts. The real rank is displayed under the avatar.

... Just below where it says copper member and above the badges - you can also check the badges though.

As mentioned, you can turn membership on and off quite easily once purchased so if for example you only wanted it as a low rank - you could do that.
2098  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cryptocurrency scam tricks newbies might fall for. on: August 13, 2021, 12:36:38 AM
I've noticed a lot of people falling for scams by searching things crypto related on places like Google and clicking ads that could scam them.

I've seen a lot of cases where someone tells a person they won a giveaway but require them to send a deposit to a site to withdraw it - which might seem like an obvious scam but a lot of people are not accustomed to how to register a site etc and think it's only legitimate organisations.
2099  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Merits: Why some people grow fast on the forum (CHECK OUT) on: August 12, 2021, 11:12:48 PM
This topic seems kinda unusual to me. I'd rather people try to strive for individuality, sure you perceive yourself to be like "the best" by mimicking them but you're going to trade off some authenticity for that.

If you're going to earn a lot of merit, you probably don't need telling how to. Whether you manage to earn a lot of merit, some merit or no merit at all, you're still someone and shouldn't really give up what you are just to be what you're told people want you to be...
2100  Other / Meta / Re: Question from mods @mprep, @Welsh on: August 12, 2021, 09:07:45 PM
There was a thread on something similar to this a few days ago: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5352766.0

I think an ama is probably fine anywhere reasonable (for example service discussion) and a giveaway isn't the main part of the ama I assume? If most posts go unrewarded then it probably won't be considered a giveaway thread.
