21481  Other / Meta / Re: How recognized are you in the bitcointalk world? on: November 06, 2018, 01:12:57 PM
I've always seen the recognition list to be something that moves or changes in time with the forum (dynamic). If you add weight to historical inactive accounts moving forward, don't you eventually over time end up with a static Hall of FameRecognition/Greatest recognition of all time sort of list as people move on?  Not that this wouldn't be a nice thing to have, but I'd assume the current way recognition is calculated would be more valuable to an active member of the forum because it's more or less based off of their current point in time on the forum.
This got me thinking: an "average Recognition score" could be developed over time. Imagine all recognition scores for all users are stored once a week. At any given moment, the "average Recognition score" can be calculated by adding up all weekly scores per user, and dividing this by the number of weeks stored. The result will be a value that includes past recognition instead of only current recognition. This will help recognize users with long-term involvement.
A large shortcoming will be that it can't be done retroactively, but long term (in the far future) that effect will subside.
21482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why are there no rewards for running a full node? on: November 06, 2018, 01:11:28 PM
It is also worth noting though that the original design of Bitcoin doesn't seem to have accounted for the division of mining and non-mining full nodes we see today (ie. the first versions of the Bitcoin reference client included the mining logic as well). However there's a lot of speculation in terms of what satoshi did and did not intend so I'll leave it at that.
Exactly! Satoshi's whitepaper didn't make a distinction between miners and nodes. The whitepaper mentioned "CPU power", thereby assuming all nodes are searching for new blocks, and all nodes can earn the block reward when they find a block.
Unfortunately, this financial incentive disappeared when ASICs made CPU (and GPU) mining impossible. One could argue all miners should run a full node, but most of them use mining pools, which means only the mining pool itself needs to run a full node.
21483  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unspent transaction on: November 06, 2018, 10:32:06 AM
Thanks for the reply so does that mean it has arrived and I am now waiting on the receiver to do something at their end?
Yes. It has arrived, and it's now up to the receiver to hold up their end up the deal.
21484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unspent transaction on: November 06, 2018, 07:12:46 AM
The word "Unspent" often confuses people. It's used by Blockchain.info (or Blockchain.com now) and means the funds are still in that address. It's completely normal.

Think of it this way: You give me $10, and I put it in my pocket. That means you spent it, but I haven't spent it yet, so it's unspent in my pocket.
21485  Other / Meta / Re: We need a merit system for local boards on: November 05, 2018, 10:11:25 AM
The issue seems to be that there is not much activity going on the Dutch local board, be it due to awareness of the forum, size of crypto community, lack of merit incentive, lack of good topics, or a combination of all.
There's a more obvious explanation:
De verklaring is volgens mij niet ver te zoeken: wij Nederlandstaligen zijn allen vlotjes meertalig en kunnen dus zonder probleem deelnemen aan de anderstalige threads, zonder al te veel op ons "eigen" Nederlandstalige forum te moeten rondzwermen.
Short summary in English: we Dutch speakers easily join threads in other languages (mainly English), so we don't have to stick to the Dutch board.

The moderator/admin will set a sub merit system to allow only users that reach the least certain amount of merit to be qualified to join in the local board.
That would mean a new user who doesn't speak English can't post anywhere, and thus can't earn Merit either.

To test if it works for Newbies, just post this:

That's .mp4 instead of .gif.

I tried your other .gif too, it didn't work. Maybe it's caused by using imgur.com, try tinypic.com and see if it works.

Anybody who thinks that getting 1 merit is very hard, made 100+ post and member of this forum for more than a month  is welcome.
I will like to review your last 100 post and will try to give an honest opinion.
I wouldn't mind reviewing a few applications if you have enough of them. I'll do what I usually do:
  • Good posts receive Merit
  • Insubstantial posts get reported for deletion
  • Plagiarism gets reported for a ban
On top of that, for this thread, I'll give my opinion too Tongue
21489  Other / Meta / Re: We need a merit system for local boards on: November 04, 2018, 06:57:11 PM
I think he is talking about merit source. Can't remember anyone has applied for being merit source in Dutch Local Board.
There are some Dutch speaking Merit sources, myself included. I just don't visit the Dutch board very often, so I'm not much good to them.

Quote
I wish theymos recruites merit source for each and every local board (Although depends on availability)
You're welcome to apply as a Merit source Smiley

When you come across garbage posts, spam, or whatever, just use the "report to moderator" button as Steamtyme suggested and hopefully if there's a moderator on the Dutch boards (I don't know anything about local board moderation) they'll take action.
Mitchell used to be Mod on the Dutch board, but that ended a couple of months ago. I don't know why.
21490  Other / Meta / Re: We need a merit system for local boards on: November 04, 2018, 04:21:02 PM
If I take a look at the Dutch boards, lots of s****y projects are posted there.
Shitty (it's okay to type that word here) projects are not against the rules.

Quote
I also see a lot of spam and discussions that, in my opinion, don't belong on Bitcointalk. Also I see a lot of bounty hunters over there, posting things you can't take serious.
I barely visit the Dutch board, but I assume you mean the Dutch bounty/altcoin boards, right? Those have heavy spam all over the forum, not just in Dutch.

Quote
Can we do something about this and introduce a Merit system for local boards only?
The Merit system works on all boards, what do you mean by introducing it for local boards?

21492  Other / Meta / Re: How recognized are you in the bitcointalk world? on: November 04, 2018, 08:58:07 AM
And dang, now I'm #40 on the bpip list.  I soooo don't deserve to be ranked that high.
You've tagged countless (I'm lazy this morning Tongue ) shitposters, they'll all recognize you Cheesy

Vod's argument is that newer users here don't recognize the early names.  I don't believe this to be true. Roger Ver has a Recognition Rank of >1000 & Gavin Andresen has a Recognition Rank of 865, while abhiseshakana has a Recognition Rank of 333.  Which names do you recognize?
I don't recognize abhiseshakana either. He may be recognized in his local board, but not globally.

Quote
What would the ranks be if the original merit were included in the algorithm?
That would temporarily raise old users' Recognition Rank. Long-term, the airdropped amount shouldn't be a big part of the total Merit anymore (although at the rate Merit is currently being distributed, that's going to take a very long time).

Step 1 would be to not arbitrarily dismiss user merits that were earned through prior participation here.
Vod initially included all Merit, but changed is as previous contributions were already included in a higher Activity Rank:
For consideration:
If you're counting the initial (airdropped) Merit, which was based on Activity, aren't you double counting Activity?

Step 2 would be for people to leave merit for historical contributions, and not just current posts.
Agreed, but it's not realistic. Old posts are read much less often than new posts, which makes it much less likely to receive Merit. I made this thread: Percentage of Merit received on old posts, deleted posts, and average per post, but since it requires scraping all posts for each user, I can only check selected users. I'll add your stats here.

Quote
Also, I’m a bit shocked users like Gavin Andresen have a 0 trust rating. In his particular case, satoshi trusted him to lead development on the Bitcoin client but he’s regarded as not trustworthy enough to accept PayPal from? He was a major influence here whose first project when he discovered Bitcoin was to create a faucet to give it away. Users like him personally inspired me
I wasn't around when he was still active. What's stopping you from leaving Gavin Andresen trust now?

User OgNasty (full history)
  • Received a total of 391 Merit up to last Friday.
  • Received 130 Merit (33.24%) for 13 (0.20%) of 6226 posts created before the introduction of Merit (0.0208 Merit per old post).
  • Received 254 Merit (64.96%) for 93 (8.01%) of 1161 posts created after the introduction of Merit (0.2187 Merit per new post).
  • Received 7 Merit (1.79%) for posts that are now deleted.

21494  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is Bitcoin so stable in price after a big drop? on: November 03, 2018, 07:51:52 PM
Then, if someone was able to stabilize the market like right now, why didn't he stabilize the market at $20k? If someone did, it would be someone with a large investment in Bitcoin and would have no real use to stabilize his capital at a loss. Taking the risk to lose millions in case the SEC is happy?
All valid points. I can't answer it though.
21495  Economy / Speculation / Re: A Saving Plan on: November 03, 2018, 06:28:32 PM
In case i wanted to consolidate you advise me for example to send 1 entire bitcoin from my ledger to an other address of my ledger and keep everything saved until now in a new unused address belonging to my ledger nano s?
I have no experience using a Ledger, so can't tell you the details. If it's possible to select which inputs to use, you can manually select just the small amounts. There's no need to put all your funds in one output, you can keep several larger ones in different addresses.

Quote
Will it take long for Ledger nano s to consolidate everything to 1 address?
It's just a normal transaction; it takes as long as any other transaction.
However, if you're not in a rush, it's worth using as low a fee as possible. It can take longer to confirm, but you pay less fees.

Just make sure to double check the address you're sending to, but that's a warning that applies to all transactions you make.
21496  Economy / Speculation / Re: A Saving Plan on: November 03, 2018, 03:34:59 PM
when you talk about dust would you consider 0.01 BTC dust? i don't think so but I ask.
It's not dust in the sense that it still has/had value at high fees. Last December, fees went up to 600-800 sat/byte (and shortly even higher). If/when fees go up that high again, each input would cost you 0.001BTC or more in fees, which is 10% or more.
Let's say you have 10 small inputs of 0.01BTC. If you consolidate them now, you can pay 1 sat/byte and get around 0.09998BTC as output. If fees go up to the peak again, you would get less than 0.09BTC. That's why it's so important to consolidate your funds while fees are low, it makes it cheaper to use your funds later on.
21497  Economy / Speculation / Re: A Saving Plan on: November 03, 2018, 02:43:13 PM
My actual plan is to buy daily fractions of btc
How are you storing your Bitcoin?
  • If you add small amounts to your wallet each day, you should read Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs!. Not so long ago, when fees were high, I've seen people who literally had worthless Bitcoin dust, despite it being worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.
  • If you're keeping your coins at an exchange, you should get yourself a more secure storage method.

As for the altcoins that is the reason why i haven't exchanged them into btc yet : i don't want to regret later...
It's virtually impossible to time the market. I regret not selling most of my alts, only a few went up long-term. I still hold on to them, and sell a small amount once it goes up to a price I like.
21498  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is Bitcoin so stable in price after a big drop? on: November 03, 2018, 12:37:03 PM
With great certainty we can say that this is not just a coincidence, and that someone or something stands behind all these events. In other words, it is obviously manipulation with the sole purpose of greater coin accumulation, which will of course be sold at the moment of the new ATH.
I had another thought: one of the reasons the SEC didn't approve a Bitcoin ETF yet, was because of Bitcoin's volatility. What if "someone" is trying to reduce volatility until the SEC approves a Bitcoin ETF?

Quote
In my opinion reason why price is so stabile is that most of weak hands emptied their bags, and real hodlers do not want to sell at this price.
That makes sense too. I'm not buying, I'm not selling.
21499  Economy / Services / Re: KIKBTC - Hiring - 0.1 BTC Salary on: November 03, 2018, 11:45:20 AM
But without doing enough research and canalize other users to avoid from a service, is just an unfortunate smear campaign.
Then answer this:
Do you have any proof for your claims? Say a news item on a website created in 2004 instead of a website created 2 months ago?
You're the one making claims, prove it. If not: we've seen it all many, many times before.

Many services with bad intentions appeared here.
You got that right!
21500  Other / Meta / Re: Adding a master account field to profiles. on: November 03, 2018, 11:41:36 AM
There doesn't seem to be an easy way to link it to Jet Cash in the profile unless I start to use it. Perhaps the ICQ entry could be replaced by a primary account name. Does anyone still use ICQ?
You can just use any of the unused fields for it, but I prefer just leaving 2-way neutral trust.

And users create alts for different reasons, one of which could be to separate your identity from an opinion you might have. And enter discussions incognito.
I remember seeing a post from theymos saying exactly this. I can't find it back, but from what I remember he says he prefers someone to express his opinion from an alt-account instead of not daring to speak his mind.

On the other hand, illegitimate alt accounts= Alt accounts used by different members which is not known to us/public.
As mentioned above, there can be legit reasons for wanting anonymity. As long as you're not untrustworthy on any of these accounts, I wouldn't call it illegitimate. Many users for instance left positive trust to their alts, which usually leads to red trust once discovered.

There are a few reasons that are not "spam-the-forum-for-bounties-and-signature-moneys", like Loyce and theymos who have an alt account that is used to login in insecure or shady computers (thus, not risking their account).
Until now, I haven't used LoyceMobile on anything else than my own phone, but I never trust phones. It's much easier to access than my home computer.

admins shouldn't operate as admins tho, always standard users unless performing admin tasks.
Although that's in general true for working on any computer system, I don't agree when it comes to forum use. Mods operate as Mods all the time too.

Many thanks for all the suggestions, and I will certainly implement some of them. It seems that some of the options are not available to brand new members, and, as a result of this, I decided to make a few posts as Kuffy. Hopefully this will allow me to comply with the suggested ideas.
You still haven't left 2-way neutral trust. That's much easier to find later on than (old) posts.
