2161  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase account temporary Disabled on: November 15, 2020, 11:37:28 PM

If it doesn't work try to reset your Coinbase account password it could be fix this kind of issue according to this guide below.
- I see the error "account temporarily disabled." What should I do?
I would actually skip to this step first. According to your linked article, this message is due to a security issue with your account.

Either the OP clicked on a link instructing CB to 'freeze' their account, or CB detected a hacking attempt into the OP's account, or the OP tried to reset his password, and CB detected something unusual.
2162  Other / Meta / Re: Should mods proactively nuke accounts? on: November 15, 2020, 11:31:04 PM
In addition to what mprep said, if the mods get too aggressive in proactively nuking spambots, those who are behind spambots will get better at hiding their bot accounts. Over the long run, mods would have more difficulty determining if an account is part of a spam bot, or is an actual user not putting much effort into a post.
2163  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump has conceded oh wait he’s not!!! on: November 15, 2020, 11:23:51 PM
I fully expect Trump to concede soon though. The lawsuits won't be going anywhere and even if he did score some victories, it won't be enough to flip entire states.
He doesn't need to actually flip any states. All he needs to do is have state presidential elections invalidated due to problems with enough votes. If Trump can prove more ballots were illegal (due to one of many reasons) than Biden's margin of victory, the courts will either call another election or prevent the state from casting their electoral votes.

The only way I can see him actually flipping a state is via a recount, or if there was problem software used such as Dominion, and a 'manual' recount shows the vote totals were incorrect.
2164  Other / Meta / Re: When replying, do you make use of quick replies or do you click "reply"? on: November 15, 2020, 11:18:51 PM
Hmmm, I don't even see a "QUICK REPLY" option.  Where be it ?  Smiley
It is at the bottom of each page. If you want the option to use it, you need to enable the feature. From your profile, go to 'Look and Layout Preferences' and change 'Use quick reply on topic display' to 'show, on by default'
2165  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Payments Provider BitPay Rolls Out Cryptocurrency Payroll Service on: November 15, 2020, 11:16:45 PM
The 1% fee charge for the transaction is my attraction point for their service and no foreign fee inclusiveness irrespective of the companies or individual locations.
The 1% fee is too high for me, people sending millions of dollars will see it high. I can pay as less as possible while using my noncustodial wallets.
1% appears to be more expensive than most payroll processing companies in the US (based on a recent google search).

I might see this as not unreasonable for companies with employees in multiple countries that are paid in multiple currencies, but a low number of total employees. Transferring funds overseas tends to be expensive for smaller amounts, and payroll processing seems to have a fixed cost plus a cost per employee.
2166  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: estimate tx fee in script on: November 15, 2020, 10:12:54 PM

The best thing is to look at the mempool and see what is the mempool size and what is the lower one that will probably get confirmed.
This is exactly what any program or script will do.

The difficulty in estimating the required fee is you don't know when the next blocks will be found. Assuming the last block was found 1 minute ago, the next block may be found in one second, 9 minutes, or in over an hour. If the next block is found in one second, the required fee to get a transaction included in that block will be lower than if the next block is found in an hour because transactions would be included in the interim.

For transactions you need confirmed quickly, you need to overestimate the fee because of the risk there are long gaps between when the next two blocks will be found. If your program assumes 10 minutes between now and when each of the next two blocks will be found, you will underestimate the required fee to get a transaction included 1/2 the time. If your program assumes 20 minutes between now and when each of the next two blocks will be found, you will more frequently get your transaction confirmed in the next two blocks, but will also overpay most of the time.
2167  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Free crypto from learning about cryptocurrency - from Coinbase on: November 15, 2020, 03:53:42 AM
Most of the videos that CB is showing to allow people to 'learn' about crypto in exchange for money are promoting various altcoins.

I would caution anyone 'earning' coin via coinbase.com/earn against 'investing' in most altcoins. Almost all (I don't like using terms such as 'always' and 'never') altcoins are technologically inferior to bitcoin, many of them end up going to (near) zero, even the ones listed on major exchanges.
2168  Other / Meta / Re: When replying, do you make use of quick replies or do you click "reply"? on: November 15, 2020, 03:43:52 AM
At one point, quoting a message with 'Quick Reply' enabled would result in my browser to display a bunch of blank space below the post/preview boxes below the 'quick reply' box. I am having difficulty replicating this in this thread, so this issue may have been resolved.

I have found the 'quick reply' feature to be far superior to the 'reply' link, especially when using mobile as it reduces the number of pages that need to be loaded, and makes it easier to quote posts that are not in the last 20 replies to a thread.

Based on the responses to this thread, there is an argument to have this feature turned on by default.
2169  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a (simple) way to create a PGP key from a seed? on: November 13, 2020, 04:51:03 AM

The inability to calculate x with a given y is based on currently known theorems. It is always possible that currently accepted theorems are disproven with additional research and new methods of breaking cryptography (or parts thereof) are invented.

In my example, the cryptography behind ECDSA is broken, and in this example, someone with a single seed used to generate keys that use both ECDSA and other cryptography methods would have their keys secured by other cryptography methods compromised if ECDSA is broken.

I would point out that after ~7 years, a billion dollars worth of Silk Road coins were seized by the DOJ. How did the feds obtain the private keys to seize these coins? I don't know. It could be that Ulbrights' PGP key was compromised. I think it would be more likely that methods to crack Steganography were improved, and the keys were found in a hidden file. In any case, previous methods intended to keep information private is no longer useful in keeping information private.
2170  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a (simple) way to create a PGP key from a seed? on: November 11, 2020, 06:11:43 AM
As long as you remember the seed and derivation path, you should be able to regen your PGP keys, no? Admittedly, it's less than ideal.
using one seed to generate everything (your bitcoin keys, PGP key, etc.) also adds an additional risk that if you lose or leak that seed you will lose everything.
Typically people will store their various keys together in the same mediums, and store backups together. So if something happens such that you lose access to one set of keys, chances are you will lose access to all your keys.

IMO, the greater risk is that a seed might get exposed due to cryptographic weaknesses that one set of keys uses, and this weakness would end up exposing all of your keys. For example, if a hypothetical weakness in ECDSA allowed someone to determine a bitcoin private key, and to use a bitcoin private key to determine your seed, then your PGP keys would be exposed if you are using the same seed for both your PGP key and your bitcoin keys.
2171  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: November 10, 2020, 06:26:02 AM
Think about it - there is only one Trump supporter on this forum who was willing to put his money where his mouth is on the 2020 election, and that was a relatively advantageous bet on an incumbent. That's really bizarre given the amount and loudness of pro-Trump rhetoric here.
Umm, excuse me. I bet that Trump will be the President after the election is over. This is an even more bold bet than eddie13 made, as it effectively hinges on legal challenges by Trump/campaign.
2172  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bet PrimeNumber7 vs. DaveF on: November 09, 2020, 02:12:47 PM
1 - Agreed. I understand the threshold I proposed was when the next president becomes president, however I have no problem waiting an extra day.
2 - I would agree that the term “President” means the ‘President of the United States’ whose authority is vested by the constitution. If for some reason a swearing in/inauguration does not occur, for example because of violence, War, the pandemic, or any other reason, whoever is President per the constitution will determine the winner. Trump declaring himself President while not being President would be hilarious, but would be insufficient to determine the winner.

If there is ambiguity as to who is President as per the constitution, we can rely on Supreme Court cases/rulings. I don’t anticipate who the President is to be disputed in late January.

I also promise and agree to act in good faith and have every reason to believe you will do the same.
2173  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: November 09, 2020, 05:00:20 AM

Want to place a bet that no matter how much litigation happens Biden still wins?

-Dave

The betting odds are currently roughly 10:1 for Trump to be the next president (a $1 bet wins $10). If you would be willing to offer these odds, I may be willing to consider a bet with you.

That site is showing 8:1 at the moment but it does seem to bounce a lot.

Since this is the Bitcoin board, not the USD board how about BTC0.015 of my funds against yours no matter where BTC is at the time. That when the electoral college votes next month (or whenever they meet) that they vote Biden in.

If Trump or Biden concedes before then the bet becomes payable at that time.

-Dave
I would be willing to bet you BTC0.001875 to win BTC0.015* with the following terms:
If Trump is President as of 12:01 PM Jan 20, 2021(one minute after his first term ends), I win the bet
If Biden is President as of 12:01 PM, Jan 20, 2021, you win the bet
If anyone else is President as of 12:01 PM, Jan 20, 2021, the bet is a draw
If Biden or Trump concedes, the bet is payable to the other party, however, the bet will not be final until 12:01 PM, Jan 20, 2021. This allows one party to concede, and end up becoming president (for example if they won a court case)

*for clarification, I am risking BTC0.001875 and you are risking BTC0.015

The logic behind the above terms is that Trump's legal strategy is not necessarily to win 270 electoral votes, it is to deny Biden from getting 270 votes. If the electoral college meets and there is no winner (neither candidate receives 270 votes), congress votes on the next president, with each state getting one vote.

The above offer will expire 24 hours from the date of this post if it has not been accepted.
2174  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Place To Store Your Seed? on: November 08, 2020, 10:06:33 PM
Safe deposit boxes tend to be safe.  But I heard of few cases where burglars drilled in into it.  Also, when there are bank robberies, how safe are the customer deposit boxes though?  But then again, if you have one bank deposit on one bank... the other say much farther way, that is generally safe right?  I mean imagine having 2 safe deposit boxes in 2 different banks but say they were just a short few blocks walk from each other... surely you wouldn't feel that comfortable right?
If you have two deposit boxes in two different banks you always have to take into consideration the following scenario.

A big petrol tanker stops at a red light at the corner of where your first bank is. What the driver doesn't know is that the tank is leaking petrol and an event is about to happen that will change his life forever. An unsuspecting man smoking a cigarette walks by. He is still drunk from the night before. Unaware of the smell of fuel, he throws his cigarette butt under the big truck. Within a few seconds, the fuel catches fire. The driver of the truck notices the flames, he leaves his truck and runs off. A huge explosion happens that destroys part of the bank where the safety deposit boxes are located. Luckily nobody died, but your seed phrase has been lost in the rumble.

On the opposite end of town, underground waters are discovered under a building complex. A huge crater opens in the ground causing the west wing of the building to collapse and disappear in the water stream. Unfortunately, the west wing is where your bank was located and all safety deposit boxes have been destroyed by the flood.

Both copies of your seed are now gone. Now what do you do? I bet you never considered this threat, did you?
Jerry just use one of the methods suggested to you here, or in any of the threads you created last year and try to relax a bit.
In general, having a single 'offsite' backup is sufficient for most threat models.

While your scenario is possible, it is not common. Most threat models involve creating a new backup of your seed if one gets destroyed.
2175  Other / Meta / Re: Why is there still no trust shown in Project Development? on: November 08, 2020, 09:58:45 PM
Less people are using that forum for development discussion, and more are using it for completed project promotion and scams.

These threads are in Project Development inappropriately. You should report these threads so they can be moved to the correct sub.

Threads involving a 'live' site should not be in project dev.
2176  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cracking bitcoin wallets? on: November 08, 2020, 09:50:56 PM
the coins were mot probably moved by the original owner of this key. now the internet is going nuts just because they crave for drama in bitcoin world specially when the price is going up they seek "scary" news so the media gives it to them!
There was a transaction out of the above address, 0d13a52e3b640d05cdf31b41f335b327f126cb79d9eec1e2bc46556ef30a0b57 that sent 1 bitcoin to an address, bc1qa5wkgaew2dkv56kfvj49j0av5nml45x9ek9hz6 with change going to the 'sending address' and several blocks later sent the change to the same address. I think it is a reasonable conclusion that the owner of sent 1 bitcoin to bc1qa5wk, ran some tests to confirm they control the private key to bc1qa5wk, and that the transaction was sent to the correct address, and once confirmed, sent the remaining amount to the bc1qa5wk address. I would be especially surprised if 1HQ3Go3 is compromised.
2177  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump Election Results Speech: Here Are All The False Claims on: November 08, 2020, 09:38:59 PM
Election officials are following the orders of both PA State and SCOTUS.
The last time I checked, PA election officials declined to allow poll watchers watch the ballot counting, even after a PA appellate court ordered them to.  (this is a different case)
Trump is arguing that they they are already fraudulent and should not be counted and a whole bunch of other nonsense.
The state law is clear, in PA, the deadline to receive ballots is 8 PM on election day. Any vote received after this deadline is not a legal vote, and as such should not count. The term "fraudulent" may or may not be appropriate, however, these are not votes that should be counted.
2178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: November 08, 2020, 06:43:37 PM
NBC, CNN, AP all call it for Biden.

Election was like ripping a band aid off slowly.
A news outlet “calling” a race means nothing. It is the electoral college that determines who becomes president. There will likely be litigation that goes to the Supreme Court.

The media has gotten a lot wrong over the past four years, and I have no reason to believe they have gotten any better.

Want to place a bet that no matter how much litigation happens Biden still wins?

-Dave

The betting odds are currently roughly 10:1 for Trump to be the next president (a $1 bet wins $10). If you would be willing to offer these odds, I may be willing to consider a bet with you.

and let's keep the conspiracy theories to a minimum...

Aww, but I was just going to discuss the theory that Trump / Pence were going to pull a Ford / Nixon.  Trump will step down, make Pence president and Pence will give Trump a presidential pardon to keep him out of jail (even though he rightfully belongs there).
While there is not any evidence that Trump committed any crime while in office, IMO it would be prudent for him to pardon everyone in his administration, including himself as I would presume that he would be the subject to politically motivated prosecutions.

~

Beautiful. Why do we even have the elections then? Must be some pesky state laws requiring that. Can they try to change those laws? I don't see how that could be done retroactively.

In order for any state legislature to change a law, including the law that governs who electoral college voters are, the law would need to be signed by the governor, or have sufficient support in the legislature to override a veto. The only state this could possibly be done in is GA and AZ, which would not be enough to change the election outcome. It would also be damaging politically for those who vote in favor of this type of proposal.
2179  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Status: 0/unconfirmed, not in memory pool on: November 08, 2020, 06:19:48 PM

You should be more patient than waiting 'a couple of blocks'.

Can you describe the inputs you are using to fund the transaction? Are all the inputs confirmed?
2180  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How will Trump leave the White House? on: November 08, 2020, 06:09:21 PM
Trump will leave the White House. Joe Biden's campaign manager was insinuating that he would need to physically remove Trump earlier is pure partisan bullshit. He said something alone the lines of "The WH has the power to remove trespassers". Give it a break.
This statement directly contradicts Biden's statement that he will bring unity to the country and that he will be president for all Americans.

The past four years, including the fact this question has even come up, is evidence that most of the US media is state propaganda. Not state propaganda in a traditional sense as being controlled by a government, but rather is controlled by a political party who wants to control the government.
