Right now, for higher security basilisk servers are dynamically discovered using a stochastic method to prevent having the identical set of responders for all nodes.

In order to achieve this, things start with a specific seed node, which immediately returns candidates for other basilisk servers. The client randomly determines which ones to use.

After initializing, then there are multiple (up to 64) redundant basilisk servers.

However, at the very beginning, there is only one and if that server is not responsive, then things get stuck. Of course, you say, why not distribute the seed function to all the notary nodes.

And yes, that is what I will be working on next. For most of the time, the single seed is sufficient, but clearly we dont want any single point of failure even if it is limited to launching, especially as launching is when we are most wanting to use the basilisk.

I recommend people to use komodod (unix and osx) whenever possible for highest security. Basilisk mode is offered to allow convenient access, but it does rely on the servers.

this needs a bit of testing on all the variety of osx variants. so if you are up to it, please give it a try. Once there is a native komodod for osx, then it will allow iguana to do all the protected z transactions on mac.

The blockchain went into FFA (free-for-all mining) and out without incident. That is what caused some issues the other day. We now have a respectable 100 to 200 ksol mining from komodopool and it is seamlessly mining blocks alongside the notaries.

This separation into two entirely different classes of miners makes it a lot more secure as neither a majority of notaries, nor a majority of hashrate will enable traditional attacks. Both a majority of notaries and majority of hashrate is needed and the problem for the attacker is that all the notary mined blocks are signed by the notary. So any subverted notary is identifying themselve with every block.

I fixed some notary specific bugs that wont affect any other nodes and a potential issue for the future, so things are settling down now.

Soon we should have an iteration on the windows wallet, which in testing is doing much better in full mode. The basilisk servers now have 10x the capacity of before.

Now we just need the bitcoin network to get back to normal!

'deep' state actors underneath is same as "non-transparent republic", we are saying the same thing, just different words.

The komodo ecosystem is designed to avoid most of the politics that can happen in crypto. Technical decisions are made by a benevolent dictator, deployment is suggested, but ultimately if the notary nodes dont deploy then it will split the network. so it is like a veto power in the event the dictator goes insane. Granted the independent miners are a third power in this, and three powers is usually more stable than just two.

As far as the typical disaster recovery scenarios, in komodo each separate project tries to have its own independent chain. So what happens on that chain only directly affects that chain. By using atomic swaps, each chain can interact with other chains. So if a DAO incident happens, the DAO chain dies, but only some temporary effect limited to the then pending atomic swaps.

It is a practical form of government that blends a pure democracy (external miners) with a republic (elected notaries that represent the KMD holders)

but even the notaries have strictly limited powers and complete transparency, which if only we could implement in the real world would eliminate a lot of issues that arise from non-transparent republics

Whether a block goes to a notary node or not is random. In exchange for the ability to mine at easy diff, the notary nodes provide high end servers for network services, like basilisk mode.

Notary nodes dont have the power to create transactions, nor do they ever control anybody's funds. they are elected based on a Proof of Stake election

So while the notary nodes are in a semi-trusted position, this trust is used for getting consensus on what checkpoint to write to the bitcoin blockchain, availability of network services and other things that otherwise would be unavailable or unreliable

The network is at the same time a PoW network and a cartel mining (as you call it) which are coexisting and seamlessly shifting between each other. The added randomness of which group will mine the next block makes it that much harder to conduct attacks as no matter how much hash power you bring, the notaries mining costs dont go up.

From the other side, if any group of notaries start misbehaving, then they are subject to not receiving subsidies or outright replacement and since any notary mined block must be signed by the notary, it is not possible to hide behind a brand new address

Thanks to grzem of cryptox.pl who found this bug yesterday! Definitely not an easy one to find and troubleshoot.

This bug is a komodod local wallet bug and only affects transactions with multiple inputs with interest accrued. for most people this wouldnt be that big of a deal, but if unlucky a large accrued interest could have been lost. Luckily it was found early so there hasnt been a chance for large percentage accruals yet.

We are validating the fix in the dev branch, will post when it propagates to the other branches. If you dont mind occasionally donating to the miners, then there is no need to update. But if you want to get every komodoshi of accrued interest and are running komodod (native) in unix, then best to wait for this update.

I believe that the iguana full node and basilisk were immune to this bug, but this needs some careful verification.

That is the first thing I will work on after all the basics are stabilized.

The real world usage of KMD could not be replicated during testnet phase. Also, we now have a lot more eyes on the details! Between users, exchanges, pools, it exposed a few rough spots. First priority is to make all these areas solid.

the status of atomic swaps is the low level statemachine has been working for quite a while. The liquidity node basic functions work, but I want to expand the functionality to make it more useful. Also I need to add detailed stats (pending and historical) and utilize those stats to ensure all pending swaps are completed, even after a disconnect.

So there are definitely some things I need to finish in this area, but in parallel the GUI will be completed, so I hope to get the command line level LP node code into beta test by end of the month. However, I am still dealing with payouts, bug fixes and support issues and not able to code the DEX/LP at all until people will let me not do payouts or bug fixes for several days at a time.

So, likely next week before this happens.
