221  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are there any pools that don't mind botnets? on: March 22, 2012, 01:47:36 PM

In any case, to write a botnet is really really bad and I'm sure you mum would be disappointed in the person who did. So don't.

And i'm sure YOUR mom is disappointed regarding YOUR illiteracy and poor grammar skills.

And I'm sure that your mom is disappointed that you are starting sentences with 'and'.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Geocaching for bitcoins on: March 22, 2012, 01:44:51 PM
Perhaps, getting into a dialog with a true geocacher is warranted. I found this guy: http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/

Bear in mind, I'm not advocating converting him to using Bitcoin, but tapping him for insight about geocaching in general. We may be missing something important as to why it won't work or, on the other hand, he'll enlighten us with something as to how he sees working. We're not experts at geocaching, therefore we must be humble enough to pique Andy Smith's thoughts on the matter.

~Bruno~

That's a good idea. Find out what hardcore geocacher's are interested in doing.

I'm a moderate geocacher. I would say they are in it for the riddles and the hunting. Certainly not for the money as there is none in geocaching.

But there could be and people not usually geocaching might just need that for motivation to participate in a bitcoin treasure hunt.

Is there something like an online scavenger hunt?

What about a bitcoin competition where you pay for a starting fee, have to solve some cryptocurrency related tasks and get your fee back once you finish?

Yes, we should have an online BTC scavenger hunt on the Tor hidden web.
You can test out random 134j13io1i5hio13hio51ioh.onion links forever until you find a link to a bitcoin wallet ^_^

about 3 days ago i was commenting on the language choice.
from a software architecture standpoint other languages than c++ would make more sense in such a sensitive area.

This is nonsense. If anything, more advanced languages can have their own vulnerabilities which could bitcoin vulnerable without any mistakes acutally made by the developers. This is almost impossible with a low level language like c++.
Apart from that, a program's security does not depend on the language, it depends on the coding.

I'm sorry but you are completely wrong here.

You have to be god-like to not create security vulnerabilities in significantly C/C++ software.  'Direct' buffer overflows can be avoided by littering your code with meticulous boiler plate (and praying you haven't made a mistake somewhere).  But integer overflows leading to buffer overflows are so hopelessly trickly that I have no faith in any C/C++ being safe.

Java/Python/Ruby/Lisp buffer overflows simply don't exist... a huge class of exploit eradicated by language choice.  And there's a long list of languages immune to buffer overflows (this is mostly a glaring hole in C/C++).  Look up US military/intelligence mandates about language choice.  C/C++ is so bad that it should be immediately abandoned and _never_ used for _anything_.  Why do you think computer security is such a disaster (it was all C/C++ until the recent xss/xsrf/sql havoc - and that too is a design flaw).

That you think "this is nonsense" means that your own code is already insecure, and you just don't know it.

+1

C++ used to be my favorite language... until I learned Lisp and Python.

Now my foot is finally recovering from being shot too many times

I think you mean your knee.

Also, thank you for the fix, developers.

232  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox Question - Redeeming private keys on: March 15, 2012, 11:30:38 AM
MtGox will sweep any coins out of the address when it is added, and will keep it for future use and sweep out any coins added later. The coins are sent to a new address and credited to your account.

So if I import a private key, I can use the address forever, and whenever someone sends money to it, it goes into my Mt. Gox account automatically. Right?

You sound like just the guy I would want guarding my email!

Personally I would not use it for personal email, if I was you.
Maybe to create duplicate accounts? Hotmail takes ages to sign up, this is instant.

Are you sure about that?
Takes ages to fill in the form...

What is the hardware that this domain is hosted on?  Unlimited space?  How much hard disk space is inside the server?
I have 1 gig un used space.
1 GB space == Unlimited space? Huh
Yes. The email does not have limits on the amount of my space it can use.
Even when I make the emails, I can place a limit or let it use unlimited amounts of my space.

234  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are there any pools that don't mind botnets? on: March 15, 2012, 10:45:30 AM
Of course this would require work and money on the part of a botnet operators.  Operators are leeches of society.  The idea to actually do a token amount of independent work is a concept completely foreign to them.  They simply expect pools to to take their extremely unprofitable, server crashing workload AND be happy about it.

while that can often be true, botnet developers have matured considerably.  its turned into a multi-million dollar industry and the operators/devs at the higher end, often treat it like any other business venture.
Nope, they are all pretty much skids...lol.

Unfortunately, everybody here fears botnets as if they are all like 10m large.
235  Economy / Trading Discussion / Mt. Gox Question - Redeeming private keys on: March 14, 2012, 02:14:21 PM
If I redeem a private key with nothing on it (generated with vanitygen), will all coins sent to the address associated with it go to my Mt. Gox account always? Or does the feature only withdraw the balance of the key once, and not associate the address with my Mt. Gox account?

Thanks!

omfg you discovered the bitcoin address code. it's supposed to take millions of years to crack.
delete your post before someone uses it to double-spend all their coins, and threatens network security.
239  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are there any pools that don't mind botnets? on: March 11, 2012, 01:50:42 PM
Most of the pools I've seen ban botnets. Are there any pools that encourage them, or just don't care?
Just wondering.

I know nothing really, but bitparking and eligius pool require no registration and a botnet could use that to their favor.

But why use a pool at all? If a botnet is big enough to generate whole blocks then they should all solo mine but have the generation sent to the bonnet operators wallet, and if the botnet  is not big enough to generate blocks, then it's a waste of time to even write the malicious code.

In any case, to write a botnet is really really bad and I'm sure you mum would be disappointed in the person who did. So don't.

Bitcoin mining on pools is a good way to make some money, for operators of small botnets.

I've heard that Eligius and Bitparking may ban addresses for unusual activity, is this true?

I am sure something could be worked out, provided the botnet has enough hashing power to be worth accommodating. About how many connections are we talking about, at what average hashing rate each? I wouldn't expect anyone already running methods of accommodating botnets will want to publicise their details so I expect negotiations would typically be on a botnet by botnet basis and of course you'd have to take the chance that it is a honeypot operation looking to find botnets...

-MarkM-

I'm just asking + learning about pools, not actually looking for a deal, lol.
240  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Are there any pools that don't mind botnets? on: March 11, 2012, 10:02:39 AM
You have to run a node in order to use p2pool. That is not fun at all Tongue
