221  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-05-25 RT Prime Interest - Interview with Trace Mayer and others.. on: May 29, 2013, 02:38:39 AM
RT has a surprisingly large amount of bitcoin coverage (daily). The following was on air 5/25 but these segments tend to be posted a day or two later on their site.

http://rt.com/shows/prime-interest/bitcoin-free-speech-market-784/

Today RT's 'Prime Interest' had another great segment on bitcoin (Bob English interviewed Andreas Antonopolous). It was a really great interview, the segment is not online yet...
222  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-28 Reuters: US Busts Bitcoin-Like System Liberty Reserve in Costa Rica on: May 29, 2013, 02:13:28 AM
Unfortunately for Liberty Reserve, Mr. Holder probably won't consider them "too big to prosecute" as he did HSBC and Wells Fargo/Wachovia who collectively laundered 100's of billions for the mexican cartels, and continue to do business as if nothing ever happened.

It's anyone's guess who's next...

223  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-28 U.S. Alleges $6 Billion Money-Laundering Operation on: May 29, 2013, 01:50:15 AM
I'd love to see Liberty Reserve get the same punishment as the last low-down, dirty money-laundering financial institution that had the nerve to launder Billions and Billions of dollars...

HSBC... Who was found guilty of laundering for the Mexican drug cartels and then made to pay an itty-bitty, laughable fine, while news was kept quite about it all.

 Angry Angry Angry

True. It's sad to watch how quickly the US is becoming as totalitarian as any eastern-bloc nation ever was. The only way to survive this type of targeting under the current administration is to fall under Mr. Holder's definition of "too big to prosecute". Otherwise any one of number of agencies can and will gladly crush you using a variety of diffuse and broadly interpreted regulations.

It's anyone's guess who's next..

224  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Islamic Bank of Bitcoin{}بنك بتكوين الاسلامي on: May 29, 2013, 01:04:15 AM
Two more things I've forgot to post in update;

- Activated a collection process for a loan default occured in 2011.
- Replied to numerous today's PM's, I'm sorry if I have missed someone, I will process every request.

Danijel Habek
Islamic Bank of Bitcoin

Operating as a bank usually requires - or would at least imply - a corporation operating under a legal framework within a specific jurisdiction. Where is this bank registered/located? Is it a legal corporation or some other structure?

It would be quite a challenge to choose an organization name that would raise more DHS etc red flags than the "Islamic Bank of Bitcoin"... except maybe something tea-party related in the US. Cheesy
225  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can MintChip Be Used To Do Fiat Conversions To or From Bitcoin? on: May 28, 2013, 07:24:01 PM
Mintchip will most likely never launch. If it does, don't expect it to go anywhere (Remember Mondex, Visa Cash, etc?)

One of the former developers - or at least someone claiming to be - came out a while ago and exposed the whole thing as having all kinds of AML features and backdoors built in from day-one. After all, it is a government system.

In the promotional competition, the suggestion with the most votes for "What to use MintChip for" was "to buy bitcoin" (lol)

MintChip is dead in the water for sure, destined to remain nothing more than just another ice cream flavor.

226  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitcoin gaining traction in China? on: May 28, 2013, 02:58:50 PM
This may not seem significant, but I believe it is...

Quote
hello,
glad to get your mail
we will apply for an Bitcoin Account.I will tell you when I get.

Just received this message from an electronic component manufacturer in China. I asked if they were accepting bitcoin yet, and referred them to the BTCChina.com site, suggesting it was faster, less expensive and more convenient than the T/T (aka bank wire transfers) we'd always used in the past (and used for the vast majority of trade with China)

Their management must have seen the potential benefit, and are going to accept it now. I always ask our offshore suppliers if they "take bitcoin yet" (just for fun, mostly they've never heard of it), but this is the first time I have seen a manufacturer express any interest.

If you do international trade, don't hesitate to put the word out about bitcoin, refer to BTCchina.com, etc. It would be great if it became an alternative to the slow, archaic T/T system.
227  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-28 OkPay Suspends BitCoin Processing on: May 28, 2013, 01:45:41 PM

Very likely that either MasterCard or a US govt agency (could be one of many) had issues with a BTC funded USD debit card.
228  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Canadian Bitcoin Startup on: May 28, 2013, 01:30:15 AM
what does between the ages of 18-24 have to do with it?

Already legal age but still young enough to get scammed easily.

QFT

+1 .. lol... and young and naive enough to base a business plan on hiring equally inexperienced coworkers  Grin

229  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-24 Google No Longer Able to Pay Android Developers in Argentina on: May 25, 2013, 08:20:57 PM
bitcoin wont solve the problem. WTF are you talking about? Did you read? Thats like saying google can pay the developers in marijuana and that will solve the problem because it is outside of the control and scope of the state.

bullshit.

In this case, bitcoin is no fucking different than dollars except dollars have a bigger infrastructure.

seriously, folks saying bitcoin will solve this, walk me through what the fuck you mean as if I eat paint chips for a living. Because basically you are advocating that google break local laws in order to solve their local law problem.

I do say this applies to bitcoin as Argentinian bitcoin miners are breaking the law every time they sell their coins and dont get permission from the government first. Since you know, bitcoin, like us dollars is a currency.. and the illegally is currency exchange. I supposed bitcoin would be a solution if bitcoin was adopted en-mass in Argentina and the government allowed it. I mean if you could pay your rent with bitcoin you wouldnt have to exchange it for Argentina dollars. OTherwise it has the exact same problems dollars do.

Actually, if you read the article, the problem is with the location (Argentina) of the developers and their bank accounts. Google actually specifically suggested in the letter to developers that they open a bank account in a different jurisdiction so that they could receive payment. In other words, if Google offered payment in BTC, there would be no problem at all. No one in Argentina is prohibited from receiving any kind payment anywhere else in the world of course, it is their personal responsibility alone to declare it when they receive it and/or exchange it if their government requires it. Pretty much like every other country in the world.

They'll have no trouble at all exchanging BTC in Argentina.

231  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-22 RT Crosstalk - Bitcoin Ecosystem (Amir Taaki rules the show) on: May 23, 2013, 09:08:42 PM
RT (english language) has been running bitcoin stories on virtually every hourly news and on some regular segments like this since the DHS/MtGox seizure. Russia and China are definitely worth keeping an eye on right now. Unprecedented numbers of nodes are coming online in both countries.

Sorry to disappoint you, but in Russia 0.01% of the population knows what is RT.

Yes, many of us are aware that RT is often just considered to be the english language mouth-piece of the Russian gov't... It would be quite interesting to hear from any Russian forum members what the mainstream media coverage has been like there this past few months. Something must be driving the increase in node numbers?

232  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013/05/23 Bitcoins ATM on wired on: May 23, 2013, 08:57:15 PM
When it comes to bitcoin, Wired Mag has mainly been a source of "assault rifles stuffed with heroin" style FUD.

Once a 'cutting edge' publication - back in 1995 or so - they have a lot of catching up backpeddling to do if they're going to regain any credibility with the bitcoin community.
233  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-23 CNN MONEY Why PayPal is Bullish on Bitcoin on: May 23, 2013, 08:45:36 PM
Another indication that Paypal is watching bitcoin closely.

WebMoney is already demonstrating that bitcoin can sucessfully be integrated into an existing multi-currency payment system as "just another currency". It wouldn't be too surprising to see Paypal adopt a similar strategy. Combined with Paypal's massive ongoing rollout into retail payments, this would be quite significant. Bitcoin could be used anywhere Paypal was accepted, with no additional merchant buy-in required (... and most importantly for Paypal - it would hitch its existing merchant fee structure to a significant portion of the bitcoin economy).
234  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-24: Zerocoin Video Presentation at Microsoft Research on: May 23, 2013, 01:49:19 AM
What is zerocoin?  Is that this week's new alt coin?

It's apparently a cryptographic extension to bitcoin which would provide truly anonymous transactions instead of the pseudonymous level of privacy bitcoin has today. Some kind of new protocol layer, still using bitcoin (not some new alt coin) if I understand it correctly.

Jon Matonis has mentioned it on a few occasions as a privacy enhancement, see the article below:

235  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-05-22 RT Crosstalk - Bitcoin Ecosystem (Amir Taaki rules the show) on: May 22, 2013, 03:56:42 PM
Watching live on RT's "Crosstalk" now. Link below:

http://rt.com/shows/crosstalk/bitcoin-ecosystem-633/

Amir does quite well both defending and explaining bitcoin in the somewhat chaotic format of the Crosstalk show.

RT (english language) has been running bitcoin stories on virtually every hourly news and on some regular segments like this since the DHS/MtGox seizure. Russia and China are definitely worth keeping an eye on right now. Unprecedented numbers of nodes are coming online in both countries.
236  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Criticize my tamper-proof paper wallet design... and steal 0.1 BTC if you can. on: May 21, 2013, 08:03:34 PM
Canton: Thanks for all the work you've done optimising this paper wallet solution. It rocks.

Just printed a few tests using Teslin IJ (10 mil). Folds great, feel is similar to Australian etc. polymer notes.

Teslin IJ is synthetic and completely waterproof, soaked it in water for a few hours after printing on a standard HP inkjet just to see... Neither the material nor the printing was affected in the least. Can highly recommend.
237  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: US Regulations to "Rule them all?" - Look at this on: May 21, 2013, 05:31:16 PM
Breaking news: US laws are only for US  Shocked

It would be nice if it were so, but the reality is more complicated (post from the Press section):

Canada might well be a great place to do business, but anyone considering operating an exchange there should make no mistake:

When the DHS or NSA says "jump!", INSET (Canada's equivalent of the US DHS) says "how high?". Unfortunate but true in post 9/11 Canada.

Reportedly, they have a habit of pulling up unannounced in unmarked Crown Vics, in dark suits with conspicuous shoulder holsters, to do the bidding of various US agencies. Not generally too concerned with the formalities of obtaining warrants in advance, they've been reported on more than one occasion to just say "we have an ERT on standby" or "we have direct orders from Ottawa" when asked. Compliance with their requests usually follows.
238  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-05-21 - Paul Watson's Sea Shepherd Society now accepting bitcoin donations on: May 21, 2013, 05:12:53 PM
So new they haven't issued a press release yet, but some of us have been asking them to accept our bitcoins for some time now. Great news!

http://www.seashepherd.org.au/support-us/mail-phone.html

Paul Watson once accused Greenpeace (which he helped found) of becoming the "Avon ladies of the environmental movement". lol.

He went on to found The Sea Shepherd Society which is now making a real difference. They're not afraid to take on illegal fishing/whaling anywhere!
239  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-05-21 Canadian Lawyer - We accept cash, cheque, credit cards . . or Bitcoin on: May 21, 2013, 04:29:49 PM
Canadian Lawyer Magazine

http://www.canadianlawyermag.com/4663/we-accept-cash-cheque-credit-cards-or-bitcoin.html

No, they don't accept it but are referring to clients that use it, or soon will:

Bitcoin is moving off the web and into our daily lives — you can pay for pretty much anything, from sushi to a fine cocktail, if you know where to shop. It’s even been the subject of an episode of popular TV show The Good Wife.  So just how long will it be until our clients start asking to pay in Bitcoin?

Author's conclusion (points for guessing gender here):
Quote
The thing that makes Bitcoin attractive to so many — its ability to be used free from government regulation or bank intervention — is the very thing that makes it a grey area when it comes to lawyers accepting it as a form of payment. Despite Texas lawyer Jay Cohen saying he’ll take Bitcoin as payment for legal services (criminal defence lawyer — but I’m not judging), I think we’re a long way off. For me, until I know I can buy a fabulous pair of shoes with Bitcoin, it’s no good to me anyway.
