2201  Economy / Reputation / Re: [List] Merit Sources without activty in the past 20 days on: October 29, 2020, 08:18:49 PM
I would not be surprised if some of those on the above list have been removed as merit sources.
Unlikely, Merit sources hasn't changed in a long time.
It is possible that n merit sources were removed at the same time n were added, and the sum total of their source merit was equal to each other.
2202  Economy / Reputation / Re: [List] Merit Sources without activty in the past 20 days on: October 29, 2020, 05:36:53 PM
I would not be surprised if some of those on the above list have been removed as merit sources. I am sure that the source merit is being monitored and those that don’t give any merit over extended periods of time will probably be replaced by others wanting to help out.
2203  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Alexei Navalny the next victim of the kremlin government!!! on: October 29, 2020, 05:33:13 PM
I don’t even understand why Putin needs to do it

He doesn't need to do it, but the fact is that he can do it with impunity. Putin is untouchable in Russia, and so is able to crush all opposition. And as recent history has shown, other countries will do nothing to stop him. China is an ally, the US under Trump has turned its back on the world, the EU is scared.
Putin invaded multiple countries when Obama was president, and Obama did nothing, actually less than nothing as Obama and Clinton as secretary of State "reset" relations with Putin.

Putin does this because he needs to scare his population into obedience. If the Russians do not heed to Putin's power, his government will fall. There is a possibility (although small) that Putin's government will not surivie due to the unpopularity of their response to the coronavirus.

Russia does not have free and fair elections, but Putin still directs Russians to vote every so often. There have been some local elections in which the opposition party has made gains.

The point is that Putin wants to scare his opposition from putting forward effective candidates, and preventing an effective from campaigning

That's literally one of the big reasons that Russia invaded Crimea.

#1. Show his people that they have military dominance over another country and ensure people in the country know their place.

#2. Show his people that he is openly disobeying the West and there is nothing that the West can do to stop him. He's trying to show that he is stronger then them.

Putin will literally be in power for his entire life. Guy isn't going to go away at some point. His leadership style in Russia has worked to maintain the oligopoly and maintain his power. Crazy shit, but that's Russia for ya.
If Obama had done anything meaningful to help Crimea, Putin would have backed off. Unfortunately, he and Biden did nothing and Putin was able to get away with the invasion without consequences.

If Biden is elected, I would expect both Taiwan and more of the Ukraine to fall to China and Russia respectively. I would also expect more of this kind of scare tactics against dissidents in both Russia and China. Both countries know they can get away with this kind of thing with a Biden administration.
2204  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Amy Coney Barrett [Supreme Court nominee] on: October 27, 2020, 01:33:23 PM
ACB was confirmed last night on a 52-48 party line vote with only Senator Collins voting against her nomination.

Her confirmation should mark the beginning of a conservative court. Based on Biden’s signaling that he will appoint a commission to pack the SC, who knows how long it will last.
2205  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: October 26, 2020, 05:55:39 PM

This is probably not the best time to be getting into an even money bet for Trump to win. The betting markets are pricing a ~2/3 chance that Biden will win.

Who knows if he will pay up if Trump wins, considering he apparently has forgotten that he placed his bet. SM probably will.

Polling companies
polls
It has become difficult to conduct polling with the advent of the cell phone, and the outrageous number of spam calls in recent years have made it even more difficult.

I don't think pollsters have been able to fix their problems from 2016. In 2018, there was one poll that had Andrew Gilliam up by 7 points right before election day (FL governor), and DeSantis ended up winning. The other polls right before election day had DeSantis down by 4-5 points.

Part of the problem is the strength of the Democrat propaganda machine and its strategy of labeling Trump supporters and Republicans as racist. This makes Republicans more likely to hide their political views, especially from strangers (pollsters). I would trust voting data regarding party affiliation more than polls, but this is infallible, for example, approximately 30% of people at Trump rallies are Democrats, and may vote for Trump.

2207  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Presidential debates on: October 25, 2020, 11:01:19 PM
The Trump campaign is going to have an absolute field day with Biden on fracking and his weird ass condemnation of the oil industry which came out of no where.
Biden was trying to claim to be not against Fracking and ended up taking a far worse position.

It appears that Biden is trying to privately tell the far left wing of his party that he will be an extremist while telling the rest of the country that he will be moderate.

This is the exact same argument that democrats made in the 2018 midterm elections, and since the new congress was sworn in, Democrats have voted almost always as a bloc, including for impeachment that had no chance of actually removing the president (that would only divide the country), and other extreme bills (also that are going nowhere in the Senate).
2208  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Safety procedures in place to secure Bitcoin when github takedown? on: October 25, 2020, 10:28:14 PM

to answer your question, bitcoin is not hosted on github to need backing up. bitcoin is a protocol for a decentralized network.
The OP is not referring to the bitcoin code, he is referring to "issues / PRs / gists / pages" on the bitcoin repo on github.

If someone identifies a problem with the bitcoin code, they will open an issue, and if someone upgrades (or changes) the code in some way, they will open a pull request to be reviewed (and if approved) and merged by the maintainers of the bitcoin repo.

Major vulnerabilities should be reported privately, and collaboration on major upgrades are done are likely done outside of github among the maintainers.

I do think the OP has somewhat of a point. If the /bitcoin repo is not backed up regularly, any bug reports and bug fixes not yet fixed/implemented respectively will need to be resent to the maintainers via an alternative means (assuming there is no backup mechanism of the /bitcoin repo)
2209  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How does ChipMixer make money? on: October 25, 2020, 09:59:26 PM
For privacy reasons it's advisable to send an amount that doesn't match a chip size exactly and is not rounded to 3 decimal spots
Genuine question: Does this matter if I make a donation, though? Let's say I deposit exactly 0.128 BTC. I then decide to donate 0.002 BTC and withdraw a 0.064, a 0.032, a 0.016, a 0.08, a 0.04, and a 0.02 chip in a couple of different transactions over the space of a few days. Does it make any difference to my privacy that I've deposited 0.128 BTC as opposed to 0.12745902 BTC?

Depositing 0.128 is the same as depositing 0.12845902 BTC for someone trying to find your withdrawal transaction. Anyone looking at the blockchain will be looking at the same subset of transactions because you cannot withdraw the remaining 0.00045902 btc, and it would be ignored.

To maximize privacy, you should donate at least one chip from your deposit. The more chips you donate, the greater your privacy.
2210  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How does ChipMixer make money? on: October 25, 2020, 09:02:14 PM
If someone deposits 0.512 btc and withdraws exactly 0.512 in one or more chips, there would be a limited number of output transactions that are associated with their withdrawal. However, if someone were to deposit 0.512 and withdraws 0.511 btc, the number of possible withdrawal transactions goes up. The bigger the difference between the deposit amount and withdrawal amount, the more difficult it will be for an outside observer to make the connection between the deposit and withdrawal transactions.

The reason why someone would use a mixer is that they want privacy and the larger the donationfee they choose to pay, the more privacy they will have.
2211  Economy / Reputation / Re: Oh, ma Gawd...Another Nullius thread - Steamtyme hates your privacy on: October 24, 2020, 03:05:01 AM
People have the right to privacy, but there is no reason why a person must have privacy if they choose to not guard their privacy. Many people decide they want to share details about themselves, including personal experiences for social interaction and other reasons. It is very normal to do this.

Similar to privacy, people can talk about, including ask about, anything they want. If you have something you want to keep private, some people may look for clues about this private information, and some people may inquire about this private information. If you want this information to remain private, you should not leave any clues, and you should share this information with those you are sure you can trust not to further share it.

If you are posting about where you went one summer, or other personally-identifying information, you should expect people to know about it, even if you try to delete it from the internet. You should expect anything you post online to remain forever.
2212  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Presidential debates on: October 23, 2020, 02:39:13 AM
Apparently Biden is running against Lincoln. Or maybe this is a dog whistle on the part of Biden to his supporters.

I noticed there were several times in which Biden was unable to recall specific facts and got a lot wrong.

Probably most importantly, Biden said he would shut down the oil industry (maybe to help Burisma).
2213  Other / Meta / Re: Voting for important forum changes on: October 22, 2020, 09:00:24 PM
The forum allows anonymous accounts, which means it is trivial for someone to create multiple accounts to cast multiple votes.

The forum also values free speech, even when the speech is unpopular or controversial. If voting to Un/ban someone is implemented, it would become difficult to say anything unpopular.

The forum can be reasonably compared to social media. The social media company sets the rules, and the market decides how much traffic and how many users use each social media platform. The social media companies accept feedback from their user base, but won’t make changes based on votes.
2214  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: October 22, 2020, 06:57:02 PM
If you were referring to the Russia investigation, there was no predicate to start the investigation.

The predicate was when a Trump campaign advisor told an Australian diplomat that Russia had politically damaging material on Clinton.
I don’t think this is sufficient to open an investigation. The amount of lies told at bars is off the charts. If everything said at a bar were to be believed, investigations into everyone and their brother would be opened, and everyone would have a Nobel peace prize (not the participation kind that your side advocates for).

There are not any Chinese companies that need saving. They are all state sponsored entities whose purpose is to benefit the CCP and steal IP/technology from the West.

Trump also already made a fortune as a private citizen, he didn’t need to become president to get rich. Biden on the other hand left public service with multiple mansions after spending his career on a ~120k/year salary; a good salary but probably not enough to pay for the kind of lifestyle he is living.
2215  Other / Meta / Re: Where is my merits? on: October 22, 2020, 05:08:05 PM
The OP is a troll who is looking for attention. Don’t give it to him.

Look at why he is tagged. His “scam attempt” has got to be one of the lowest effort attempts to steal money. I have my doubts that he even has a mechanism in place to receive money if someone were dumb enough to believe his “investment” opportunity is legitimate.
2216  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex's taking money from its customers to cover its loss on: October 22, 2020, 04:14:28 PM
News? Did you get the money back?

No, I didn't!
Nobody got his money back. Poloniex's a real gang of thieves. Stay away from that exchange.
"New owner" Circle looks polite, i don't know why they don't give your money back
Good luck!
I hope that you understand that neither the new or old owner actually has your money. The coin was lost because of loan losses.

I would not be surprised if the transaction was structured in a way such that the new owner is insulted from any claims from the margin losses, regardless of what they have promised to do for those who lost coin.

I hope you are COVID-19 free, and otherwise safe and healthy. If you are not healthy, I commend you for announcing your revocation of your reputation.

I had noticed that you had been much less active in the past several months than you previously were, and presumed you had moved onto other interests or otherwise were leaving at least on a temporary basis.

Good luck with whatever your situation is.
2218  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: October 21, 2020, 05:28:42 PM
If Barr were to appoint a special prosecutor, it would create another avenue in which the story would be thrust into the news.

Surely you're not suggesting a presidential nominees ties to a foreign country be investigated during the election, are you?  Because I thought you said that was treason or something.

If you were referring to the Russia investigation, there was no predicate to start the investigation. The Russia investigation was just the Obama administration spying on an opposition party campaign to try to prevent them from winning an election, and to harm the administration after the opposition candidate won the election.

Based on the publicly available information, there appears to be more than probable cause to support that the Biden family has broken public corruption laws. In other words, there is a predicate to open an investigation.

Running for President does not give someone a pass if they have previously broken the law.
I’m torn. If Trump wins the economy will continue to improve, society will be steered in the right direction, our servicemen will be cared for, and our country will be much stronger than the alternative; but we’ll have to deal with crybaby liberals and another four years of temper tantrums.

If Biden wins, the country will be run into the ground and things like mental illness will be shoved down our throats as normal; but we won’t have to deal with crybaby whining liberals for four more years and Bitcoin will shoot over the moon.

I can see the silver lining for each candidate.
I would suggest that you put country over Party.

Somehow I feel that it won’t actually do much damage because let’s face it.. Crack smoking and prostitutes aren’t really all that offputting to most leftists now is it?
The libertarian in me doesn’t really care either other than the fact that I wouldn’t want to put such a person in/close to a position of power..
Ukraine evidence? They won’t care..

This story has been hot for days and it is just now being mentioned on Bitcointalk.. Not even a thread on it..
Nobody really cares..

I think the story is just beginning. Biden himself has not even acknowledged the story beyond that it is a “smear campaign”. I don’t think this is a sustainable strategy. There are too many junior reporters who have integrity who are willing to ask about it. There is also the debate where Trump will certainly bring it up. Once Biden addresses it, it will no longer be possible for the media to ignore.

There is some evidence that Biden was personally profiting from his corruption. There are indicators that Joe Biden was receiving half of Hunter’s salary that was being given solely to give access to his father. If money was going into Biden’s bank account, he could possibly be on the hook for tax fraud, and bribery charges.

If Barr were to appoint a special prosecutor, it would create another avenue in which the story would be thrust into the news.
2220  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Coinbase sponsors two Bitcoin developers! on: October 18, 2020, 10:07:09 PM
Quote
I doubt the sums will be that big
This never crossed my mind. Thing is when you heard a big company is going to sponsor or giving fund - we tend to have the expectation that it will be some life changing big amount.

My presumption is that Coinbase will essentially make it someone's job to work on the bitcoin protocol. This is instead of the person working on a bitcoin related project in their free time. I would expect the amount would be in line with that of a software engineer working at a midsize company, low to mid six figures in USD.

In bitcoin's early days, the developers would typically be early adopters who were working to make bitcoin better that would lead to their coin being more useful/valueable. Over time, early adopter devs will find other interests, and there wont be other devs who have the same incentives to work on the bitcoin protocol and/or client.

Coinbase, like other bitcoin companies/exchanges, rely on bitcon's development. It is ultimately up to the usebase to accept any chances/upgrades to the bitcoin protocol, so if coinbase attaches strings involving adding insanity to the bitcoin protocol and/or client, they will be rejected, and the money CB spends will go to waste.
