Sure. All the miner cares about is good 12vdc power. It has no idea of anything else that is connected to the power source. If you can feed the needed power the miner will be happy.

Just be sure that your PSU has only a single power rail feeding the PCIe plugs. Using supplies with multiple high current 12V rails (internal power sources) is asking for trouble.
2242  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: One psu, two systems on: August 09, 2019, 01:44:04 PM
As long as the PSU has the power to run them both and you use ALL of the PCIe connections on the miner, sure. Does your PC have over 1.5kw of unused power reserve to feed a miner? Seems rather pointless though as the PC will always have to be on even it you are not using it.

Much easier to treat and power miners as what they are - stand alone devices.

Back to the 1st A10 I got in that would not keep a stable network connection...
Was going to try and flash it to different FW but....
1) is same version as the other 2 A10's, and
2) It fired up just fine today and so far after several hours it's stable. No dropouts whatsoever and holding at 31+THs on the GUI in Normal mode.

Go fig....
Whatcha wanna bet that it barfs when I move it from my test bench to upstairs to replace 2 of the uc/uv'd 841's....
2244  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: August 08, 2019, 12:40:54 PM
How much power is it taking?
That is covered by others earlier on in the thread if one bothers to read back a bit...
Right now I'm busy with other things like getting the 1st batch one to play nice with my router.
2245  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: August 06, 2019, 06:13:10 PM
I scratched out too soon. The network connection port light on switch still is on for a sec or 2 and actually pulses like xfr'ing data then completely goes out for several seconds, another very short activity burst then connection gone again, repeat. Both Firefox and Chrome respond very slowly and often throw a page not found fault.

ever find the reason for the intermittency?

I'll fire up one of the 2 I got in today to check if this is endemic...
Meanwhile, putting the 2x 841's I took offline for the power slot back on until this is figured out.

Is not endemic.
Fired up one of the A10's that came in today and network connections work fine, both Chrome and Firefox respond quickly.
This miner is running version 19072902_b5ff440_c2a3a66 so I'll check the version number on the flaky one tomorrow.

I do see that the insulating grommets around the openings in the case for power are different style and color. On the flaky miner they are narrow and white nylon. The connection pads are slightly recessed below the edges of the grommet so when the cable lugs are tightened down the nylon grommet is being squeezed pretty tightly.  On both the miners that came today the grommets are black nylon and have tabs covering the area under where the lugs will rest, also the connection pads are flush with the grommet so it is not being compressed.

Wonder if those differences are production batch/version related?

1st miner received (with flaky network), note the thin white grommets. I added the orange tape to prevent possible shorts.

that thin grommet results in VERY little clearance between the power lugs and case, ergo the tape I added

Later versions with much safer grommet providing tabs between the power lugs and case

1st. The needed missing adapter plugboard came in as promised Grin

2nd. Arrgggg.... The miner is not showing up on my router  Cry
The LAN port light on my switch for the connection to the miner comes on for about a second then goes out for about 3 sec, loops forever like that. Looking at the router connections I sometimes very briefly see and new name & IP pop up but it goes away before I can read it. I assume that is the miner trying to connect?

Never mind - after about 10 min it found it and the connection looks stable.
2247  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: August 06, 2019, 01:45:22 AM
Yep. That's it.

Looking at your video I see that there is an insulator strip under the power lug connections to the miner. VERY good idea and is lacking on the miner I got. Yes at least there is an insulating nylon grommet around the hole where the miner power connects BUT nonetheless there is very little gap between the power lugs and the miner casing.

Along with marking the polarity I immediately applied a couple layers of electrical tape under the edge of the grommets and covering where the power lugs might come in contact with the case.
2248  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: August 05, 2019, 06:01:16 PM
Got my 1st of 3 A10's today and looks to be in fine shape.
About using the loose PSU: You should include a picture of how the heavy-gauge + and - power cables connect to the PSU and miner as there are NO markings on the miner saying what-goes-where. Yes I have pic of it (from Blokforge) handy but I'm sure many folks may not have that.

edit: CRAP! Missing a part - the little circuit board seen in the pic on top of the PSU. The board connects the ribbon and 2 other cables together and I'm dead in the water without it...  Cry
Ticket started with Blokforge

Really hoping that the 2 other miners arriving tomorrow have the board...
edit edit: Nick @ Blokforge is overnighting me a replacement. Love those folks and their excellent customer service!

I hope he chooses immersion, given his energy savings it would be well worth the investment. There's an old saying "You get what you pay for".
Ja. Yes the initial up-front costs are a bit higher because of using (preferably redundant) pumps and the large dry cooler plus a small basic PLC for monitoring temp/flow/other things status to keep an eye on the operations and phone home to report as needed. But the massive increase in reliability and near zero maintenance makes it perfect for unattended remote operations.

Speaking of reliability and getting what you pay for of course Canaan and their Avalon miners comes to mind. The Avalons stand out as being utterly reliable with very few failures reported vs Bitmain, Innosilicon and others. Canaan has already made announcements about immersion cooling the 841 series and I recall recently seeing mention somewhere about Canaan offering an immersion cooled A10 series version.
edit: Found the Twitter feed from Canaan about the A1047 immersion cooled miner dated July 24th this year.

I highly suggest you talk to Steven Mosher  steve@canaan.io who is Canaan's Director of Global Marketing. He is very open to communications and is a regular here in the Forum regarding major topics involving the Avalons. I think he and his company would be very interested in this venture...

Ref https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooling_tower and this maker (one of many many) https://jcequipments.com/dry-cooling-tower-india.html
A dry tower simply does not use any water running over the outside of the heat exchanger that is transferring heat from the fluid to the outside air. Wet or more correctly, evaporative, cooling towers are only needed if one must produce fluid temps lower than ambient outside air temps. One company that already does the whole package for miners is https://www.engineeredfluids.com/for-crypto-currency

The temps I stated are the chip temps. Because miners are normally using air cooling and have rather limited sized heatsinks inside of them that is what sets the typical ambient air temp restrictions. Any sort of liquid cooling massively increases the effectiveness of a heat sink.

Well, BitFury's farms ARE all liquid cooled.
Why don't others do it? Aside from the time it takes to remove fans and plug in a fan simulator (to keep cgminer happy) for each miner, no idea. Seems a no-brainer to me especially if you are putting miner containers into remote areas.

Ya the fluids used to cool the miners are not cheap but still, I see no downside to it.

As for sizing the cooling tower, easy: determine how much power you are feeding the miners ( I read somewhere a typical small well can support up to around 250kw), convert to BTU's (1kw = 3412.142 BTU's), know the maximum outside air temp where the miners & towers are located, use say 60C as maximum desired fluid outlet temp from the tower and give that info to the cooling tower manufacturer.  While they will also need to know the flow rate the coolant moves at (depends on the size of miner tanks and thermal characteristics of the fluid used) they can then provide the correctly sized tower to do what you need.

Oh, and here is an announcement from a Canadian company that is doing flare gas powered mining: https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/01/22/1298376/0/en/Cryptocurrency-Mining-Operation-Launched-by-Oil-and-Gas-Producer-Iron-Bridge-Resources.html

2251  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New mining venture - consultation sought on: August 02, 2019, 05:19:20 PM
The major advantage to immersion cooling is that it eliminates all issues with using filter walls to clean the massive airflow miners normally require. The only airflow component is the dry cooling tower that sits outside. With a dry cooler no water is flowed over the hot exchanger, just uses high airflow and the exchanger itself cannot clog.

For ref, a dry cooler can be used because miners are quite happy running at chip temps over 60C and it is not uncommon to see 90-100C chip temps. That means that the coolant used does not have to be chilled in any way (no water/refrigeration) and even if it is 50C (122F) outside as long as the tower can keep chip temps in range you are golden. Since with immersion the chip temps pretty much = the coolant temp you can actually be circulating very warm/hot fluid and the chips will be perfectly happy.

Energy rates are not an issue for the OP as they are using normally flared waste gas to power on-site generators. Of course the generators should be rated for Prime-power usage so they can 24x7 run for months between scheduled maint.
2253  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: August 01, 2019, 12:47:13 PM
There really should be no difference in PSU efficiency. If anything, the PSU case looks physically larger which *could* imply it will run a bit cooler since should have better airflow and that often gives a tad bit more efficiency. Heavy gauge cables vs bus bars should be moot.
2254  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Miner Bros and Sesterce - Can you guys provide some reviews? on: July 31, 2019, 07:29:35 PM
No, I am saying that odds are those miners do not even exist. Vaporware. SCAM. Whatever you want to call it, stay far far away unless you can find a trusted person here that has reviewed them.

I already looked at their website and the specs/prices are way out of line with specs/pricing from proven manufacturers.

I'm thinking of getting 2 StrongU STU-U8's (46 TH/s) for mining bitcoin.
Never heard of that brand and I've been mining BTC since early 2014.
Unless someone else can chime in and prove otherwise I strongly suspect SCAM so, BUYER BEWARE

Again, the ONLY known manufacturers of BTC miners that have proven equipment in production are Bitmain, Canaan, MicroBT, and Innosilicon. Once in a while hotmine.io will have equipment up for sale as well but that is a rarity.

Treat any other brands as HIGHLY SUSPECT!
2256  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Miner Bros and Sesterce - Can you guys provide some reviews? on: July 31, 2019, 05:59:57 PM
Never heard of either of them.
Assuming you are looking for BTC mining gear - this area IS for Bitcoin only, NO altcoin discussion allowed here - then I and most others will always say to purchase ONLY from the manufacturer or distributors that the manufacturer lists on their website. As far as makers of BTC miners, your only choices are those from Bitmain, Canaan, and MicroBit (Whatsminers) and Innosilicon.

Hmm... I've only gotten recent info on my May 13th order and nothing (yet) about the 2 that I ordered on June 25th.  Huh
2258  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A1041 Review on: July 30, 2019, 07:52:55 PM
1st bath is now shipping today.
...
Excellent and the one on its way takes care of the order I did May 13th that was slated for 'early July".
Now... About the order I placed on June 25th for 2x A10's that were supposed to ship July 15-20 -- Any dates for *that* batch?
2259  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Beagle Black controller physical mod questions. on: July 25, 2019, 03:48:17 PM
... i dont mind testing it out xilinx it does its job but next to this BBB its junk lol

Or as an embedded system designer, one would say that the BBB is a more expensive gross overkill for the application.
2260  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Beagle Black controller physical mod questions. on: July 24, 2019, 04:55:42 PM
Yes. It is because there is a fixed bandwidth between the controller and hash boards. Rather like a family all trying to use their WiFi to stream videos all at the same time - eventually you run out of bandwidth from your connection. No idea what speed the BM miners use but Avalons have their internal controller to/from hash board com links running at 150kbps.
