2261  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Creating semi-nodes to sustain the network on: May 18, 2020, 08:16:21 AM
no because it is not changing anything about the protocol. and what you do locally can be done to everything that you want from block zero to any other future blocks that are created. there really isn't any limitations. it could be performed on already stored on-disk blocks and transactions and it could also be performed on blocks and transactions that are sent between nodes.
Oh, that makes sense. Thanks Smiley

I asked some friends about accessing paper behind paywall and they introduce me to Sci-Hub, so i managed to read the paper. Some things that i notice :
1. They mention they use standard  PC with specifications: Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz (4 CPUs),  NVIDIA  Geoforce  840M,  256GB  SSD  memory,  8GB  RAM, Windows 10 Pro 64 bit & python compiler version 2.7. Unfortunately they don't mention time or resource usage when they perform compression.
2. There's no mention about time/resource usage on decompression and indexing in case you run full node and need to share block with other node.
3. On chapter "Experimental Result", they mention they tested the compression technique without keeping smart contract feature.

IMO i doubt it's practical, at least without improvement and further testing.
They missed mentioning exactly the most important parts then. Cheesy I think it'd be fine if compression takes long as soon as it works and the blockchain size decreases substantially. The problem might come with decompression though. Say you want to import a private key and the blockchain has to be rescanned - wouldn't that lead to the decompression of all blocks, leading to a VERY long rescan time?
2262  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Visa applied for Digital Dollar Patent in US on: May 18, 2020, 08:03:32 AM
Oh wow, is this will be the end of stablecoins like USDT, USDC, TUSD, etc.?
For me, if VISA coin can be cheap for remittance, and go in/out exchanges, then I have no complaints.
I'd say no. You can still hold USDT and other stablecoins without someone asking you who you are. VISA's coin would always know what you're buying, selling, depositing and withdrawing.

Stablecoins have their own benefits. I'd rather wonder whether we're going to have more digital fiat currencies the same way we have many stablecoins. Will we have Libra + VISA's USD + other coins that pop up out there? Grin
2263  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet recovery on: May 17, 2020, 10:14:24 PM
Hi, what wallet are you using? Please explain about that and how much bitcoin is in wallet?
Almost your entire post history is replies to people who've forgotten their wallets, and in almost all of them you're asking them to PM you, send an e-mail to coolga***@gmail.com or split their recovered BTC with you. What relevance does it have to know how much BTC OP owns?
2264  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling hiding, rules ignored. on: May 17, 2020, 09:59:16 PM
They are difficult to talk to now, they have horns and underestimate the current plague.
Some local officials have visited and seen the situation, They say this is none of your business, you'd better go...that's what they say.

This must be returned to themselves, how aware they are in handling this corona virus, which is currently attacking humans in the world.
Can only wait for future developments whether they continue to insist on entering people into the gambling building or vice versa.
I am personally of the opposite thinking and I think I have the right to disagree with the current draconian measures all around the world. If someone wants to take extra precaution against this virus, I have nothing against them (and no, I don't wander around touching everything and spitting on everyone).

The thing is, people complain that some guys are going into casinos to gamble which is against the rules but you went in the casino yourself to check on them! I wear mask and gloves inside buildings as our current rules say and so many people complain about people not wearing masks/gloves... and guess what: like 8 out of 10 people who complain do not wear gloves and/or wear their mask under their chin.

It makes literally no sense to me: if you don't like people who don't wear gloves, maybe you should be wearing gloves yourself? If you don't like people going into casinos which is against the rules your government put in place, maybe you shouldn't even check on those who've entered the casino?

It's literally like complaining that so many people have an addiction to alcohol while you're drinking some beer. Or sustaining democracy while working at a communism party. If you want to sustain something, then sustain it properly! Now don't take this as if we're arguing - it's just something I personally don't understand to be honest.
2265  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling hiding, rules ignored. on: May 17, 2020, 06:53:49 PM
If your government has placed this rule and you've seen a few people get in and gamble, then that person might've been an acquaintance of the casino owner. It's not unusual for me to see local bars open with only 2-3 persons inside and it was kinda obvious they all knew each other.

On the other hand, there were also a few restaurants/bars open nearby where anyone could get inside. These are obviously not obeying the rules our government has put in place. It truly depends on the situation. What I personally think is.. just let them be. Those not willing to obey the rules will not do it whether you try to constrain them or not. If you are willing to obey them, just do it and let these guys be.
2266  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coins for 2020 on: May 17, 2020, 10:28:00 AM
1. Bitcoin

Yep, that's it. Bitcoin is all that matters. Investing in 99.9% of cryptocurrencies, especially in the long term, is worse than investing in penny stocks.
True. There's this guy who tried investing in 100 cryptocurrencies and hodl them all for 5 years: https://buyandhold100crypto.com/

Scroll a very bit down after the page loads and you'd find out how that went after the first year. Spoiler: it ended up as a 70% loss Cheesy

Do you guys think that we can invest in BTC again? It seems like BTC is slowly going up.
You can invest at any time. Bitcoin is available 24/7 - as soon as you have money, it can be yours Wink
2267  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Co-beginner in this forum? Read this! on: May 17, 2020, 10:17:57 AM
my points is that most of the people who are here for selling and buying bitcoins only are mostly not interested on merits. They are only here for personal purposes. Don't get me wrong on that part.
Well, if they're not interested in Merits them let them not be? I think it's better not to have an interest in earning merits than having one, those who are writing on the forum without any interest of earning something or increasing their post count are more to be appreciated than those writing threads 24/7 in a desperate attempt to earn a little merit imo.
2268  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Some People Cannot Stop The Urge To Sports Betting And Gamble Even In Pandemic on: May 17, 2020, 09:41:21 AM
I often see some posts from social media saying that there are some people who are being arrested because they are caught gambling using the money that the government has given to them.
Is that really a thing? By receiving the $1.2k check, are you obliged to use it for necessities? If not, then I consider the arrests pure abuse of service.. If I receive the check and use the entirety of it to buy decks of cards, why would I be arrested for it..

If someone has a bad depression and they're even arrested now for purchasing something they found a refuge in, their mental health will be damaged even worse than it was..

We can't do anything about them I think as we can't change their way of thinking with regards to money. We just let the authority do something about these gambling addicts who are using the money in things that can't help them.
That's such a fascist statement. Let's force everyone not to use their monthly wage for gambling/alcohol/smoking too and monitor them on a 24/7 basis to make sure they're "properly" using the money they earn. I am very sure that many did not use each penny out of the $1.2k checks for necessities only. We should have the freedom to choose what to buy and what not to. My definition for "proper usage" of money is very different to yours. I see more and more people writing posts everywhere as if we're looking for a world of fascism and that kinda scares me..
2269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: J.K. Rowling, Author Of Harry Potter Is Interested in Bitcoin, Time To Short? on: May 17, 2020, 09:21:40 AM
She said she doesn't understands it rather than not liking it. You can't like or dislike bitcoin. You can either use it or don't.
Oh, really? I hate BSV and I'm saying that from the bottom of my heart! BitConnect - do you like it? Or is it just that you don't use it Cheesy

I think this is a good news for us. If Bitcoin gets a lot of interest from media or celebrities, the people will know many benefit of Bitcoin and the crypto is grow up. Many new people come, the crypto will be a common
If someone rich is buying Bitcoin, I doubt they'll be buying clothes and other stuff from BTC-accepting merchants. They'd most likely only invest in a whale-sized wallet and dump it whenever the opportunity comes. I don't see a celebrity's interest in BTC an adoption/growth factor - I think the opposite actually has higher chances.
2270  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Creating semi-nodes to sustain the network on: May 17, 2020, 09:16:08 AM
78.104% space saving sounds good, but IMO it's still too big for many smartphone these days.
True. With a 500 GB blockchain, 78% space saving still means 110GB to store. It's not a bad idea as it'd allow smaller storage devices (cheap laptops with 256GB SSD, for example) to become a full node without having to compromise almost the entire hard disk, but it still wouldn't allow most smaller devices such as smartphones to sustain the network. The thing is, our PCs are only turned on while we're at home while most keep their smartphones turned on 24/7, which would make many semi-nodes/full-nodes run almost non-stop as soon as their phones have internet connection.

i believe most ideas depend on the fact that we can safely remove a big chunk of data from each transaction while still knowing what those bytes were. for example we don't have to store OP_DUP, OP_HASH160 0x14 OP_EQUALVERIFY OP_CHECKSIG in a P2PKH output (they are currently 60% of daily transactions). all we have to do is to add a single byte saying this is a P2PKH output so we ca replace 5 bytes with 1.
or every coinbase transaction input is byte[32] and -1 with 630k blocks that is 22.68 GB saved!
these 2 examples have virtually zero computation cost.
But doesn't that mean that only future txs will be compressed this way? Could all the previous ones be compressed too without having to redo all the work?
2271  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Crypto casinos pros and cons on: May 16, 2020, 10:17:37 AM
This is one disadvantage but how can we be sure of it that many of them are gambling? I doubt it that there's ample of them, they don't even know how to buy bitcoin and they can't even buy bitcoin because they are minors and don't have something for living.
This is a minimal case but I'm not confident of it as well because many or less, they are still minors that should have been guided by their parents.
Minors are probably going to learn about Bitcoin way easier than we did - they represent the new generation, most of them were born post Bitcoin's existence. Kids don't have a monthly wage but they do have their ways to get their BTC for free *cough* parents' credit cards *cough*

I think the number of minors gambling online and using services that are supposed to be for adults only is quite large. Best example is the fact that most replies on YouTube channels that are supposed to be for a 15+ audience are written by kids (for proof, just take a look at any kind of meeting of YouTubers and their fans).

As a parent, it gets harder to control what your kid does the more tech advances. A kid is curious, so it's quite obvious that there'll be a time when that kid will want to try out what they're supposed not to. Moreover, most of them are addicted to gaming so they'll want some bucks to get games with - do you really think kids know what money means? Because for most of them it's just a number that goes down when you buy games Cheesy
2272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: J.K. Rowling, Author Of Harry Potter Is Interested in Bitcoin, Time To Short? on: May 16, 2020, 09:52:23 AM
many popular personality are involved in btc before but man this is still overwhelming because the guy is famous for his creations  . now him being involved on btc is something that can give impact to the btc markets   .

what he does here is something like a promotion ( a free promotion rather )  .  it is really the time to buy and start hodling btc because i suspect that the price can skyrocket  later on .
How does that even work? Any (and I mean any) personality's statement that influenced the markets by saying they're interested/invested in BTC turned the little pump into nothing more but a following dump. Bitcoin doesn't rise/fall depending on what a celebrity says about it. If the entire Hollywood would pop up right now and say Bitcoin is crap, it'd change nothing in my perspective.

Lots of people are still stuck into the stage where they're waiting for that "we need more exchanges" "hey guys binance just listed us!!" shitcoin kind of news. Price is not about exchanges and celebrities. It's much, much more than that. Look at what McAfee's words have done to the markets back when he literally created his own immense pump&dump community and you'd see what I mean. Useless pumps like these only do damage - no good.
2273  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Co-beginner in this forum? Read this! on: May 16, 2020, 09:35:24 AM
Based on what I have read on some other threads, creating useful and creative posts could be the reason of gaining the merit and merit is really important because it shows how good are we in this forum, the higher the merit the better, it requires knowledge and experience to get more merits. Merits will be sent for only deserving people here.
Although Merits are usually sent to those who've posted something of higher quality, merit count doesn't make you superior/inferior to others. Your name will gain a better reputation throughout the journey you have on here regardless of the Merit count you have.

1. They are only here because of their own purposes, buying or selling bitcoin, getting into bounties, and asking some personal issues.
- if that is the case, then we cannot do something to help them to improve in this forum because of their personal reasons why they are here.
So if you ever had a problem with the selling/buying of BTC or some other personal issues and I told you to GTFO this forum you think it'd be fair? This is a forum with enough boards to cover everything you mentioned in the quote above, so why isolate these members from the community? If one wants to register solely for posting on Off-topic boards, why isolate them?
2274  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: J.K Rowling is the Recent Famous Bitcoin Beginner (A must read for Beginners). on: May 16, 2020, 08:44:24 AM
Well, I just wish she didn't start it all as a joke and ironically respond to those who gave legit answers (although she did say she genuinely tried to understand it). What surprises me is the fact that she says that people close to her understand it - I'm quite sure she isn't wandering around some usual people like us, so that could mean something.

But you just can't explain Bitcoin without getting boring. You either explain it in detail or someone will understand nothing - that's what I found out after my years of experience. If you tell someone "it's digital money that can't be tampered with", they'd understand it's just a more secure PayPal copycat or something.
2275  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Re: Asemanare surprinzatoare dintre.. actiunile la carne si pretul Bitcoin! :D on: May 15, 2020, 05:05:10 PM

I also tried importing my 12-word-seed to my Trezor – I can see transactions but not the balance.
By "transactions", which ones do you mean you see? You should have two transactions: outgoing Pax tx and incoming Bitcoin tx. Do you have both coins installed on your Trezor? Maybe the Blockchain interface glitched out and you still have the Pax  Huh

One more week to go! Will definitely eat a pizza for Laszlo's sake.
I suggest putting that money into some cold wallet and forgetting about it for a long time. Who knows what the future holds for us! I think I might actually start this experiment just for the sake of it Grin

Oh man, I remember reading about this stuff back in 2015 when only half a decade passed. Time flies so f'in fast.

I also cannot find any related research paper with a proper methodology and research instrument used as most of them are just blogs and conclusions/ summary of an existing research that has not been disclosed in public.

I hope some of the indicated articles will help you. Wink
It's a shame that most of these researches don't have a proper research paper for anyone interested to study. It's quite interesting how studies say gambling is on an increase while groups are saying it's the opposite and the graph above shows the wagered amounts are also decreasing (see the wagered sums of this year's first months vs 2019's).

Could also very well depend on what country the research is done into. The mindset of a nation could greatly influence results.

I’m just trying to collect some data, also I guess this post will be useful for the rest of the forum users.

In my case, in 2018 I loss 32 times one after another using the dice system on freebitco.in.

Greetings
OP, if you'd be starting from 0.00000001 BTC with martingale means you'd need a total balance of 85.89934591 BTC to wager. Are you sure you've lost 32 times in a row? Grin

My largest loss streak was from 1 sat to .025 BTC. Hurt as hell to see the loss streak although it was when BTC was under $1k. Martingale is an ensured loss.. Cheesy
