2301  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Ledger Live Lost Password Issue? on: April 10, 2019, 11:21:18 PM
I logged into my ledger live a few days ago without an issue.  My problem now is i cannot seem to find the password and i think i lost it.  Thus i cannot enter a password now because i dont know what it is.  I have my nano ledger s with me at the moment.

1.  What do i do now?  Can i install ledger live again?  Do I click the lost password under it on ledger live?  If i do, does that mean i have to install the apps again?  I installed bitcoin, bitcoin cash, gold and a few other coins in it.  Do i need to uninstall ledger live from my add/remove programs and then download it again?

2.  Do you recommend me logging into the google chrome bitcoin ledger app?  I believe its still active right so i could do that?  Of course ledger live is better and thus don't bother with this right?

2302  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to protect your wallet from hackers on: April 10, 2019, 11:02:09 PM
1.  Do you guys encrypt your laptop?  Example bitlocker or veracrypt?  Reason is if someone has physical access to your laptop, they can put virus or malware to it?  Such as a usb stick?

2.  Does bitlocker protect your laptop from a thief installing keylogger there?  Or you need to make sure your bios is secure?  Without that, it would be useless?

2303  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger S Passphrase 25th word on: April 10, 2019, 10:57:35 PM
HCP thanks for answering all that.

Im only confused with this.

Say they got the 24 word seed and need the 25th passphrase.  They are going to have to manually enter that on the nano ledger s right?

No. It's a standard BIP39/44 setup... this can definitely be scripted. The "btcrecover" scripts can be modified (relatively trivially) to do exactly this.

Okay so let say the nano ledger s got stolen.  This person wants to get his bitcoin now.

With no ledger nano s, he would have to download electrum and enter the 24 word seed and the 25th phrase and then the btc shows in electrum wallet?

Now let say this person buys a new ledger nano s to replace the old one that got stolen.  He can enter the 24 word phrase on the nano legder s and then the 25th phrase and now the btc will be restored in ledger live?
2304  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger S Passphrase 25th word on: April 10, 2019, 10:01:44 PM
hi thanks for the response.  So do most ppl do this with the nano ledger s?  Would you recommend it?  Here are my thoughts on it.

You write down the 24 word seed on paper and most likely write it in 1 or 2 or maybe 3 pieces right?

But do you write down the passphrase on it?

Because if you do, well anyone that gets physical access to it can get your wallet.

But if you don't, anyone with physical access cannot get your wallet.

The other issue is you have to remember it.  But the other issue is if someone thing happens to you, well you need the other person or persons who has access to your 24 word seed, the passphrase.  Thus them having the 24 word seed is useless without the passphrase.  So what is the best way to handle this situation?

The other thing is this.  If that is the case, then could a hacker/thief try to bruteforce the passphrase?  Or thats impossible?  Because you are manually entering it on it as oppose to like a computer doing the work like trying to bruteforce an email address password?  Because they have no idea how many words or letters is used right?

Let say your passphrase is

I like piano

or

fish1million

I mean unless you put password or 123 or something really foolish, wouldn't that mean the passphrase is going to be very strong?  Say they got the 24 word seed and need the 25th passphrase.  They are going to have to manually enter that on the nano ledger s right?

So imagine it was a long sentence or a long word.  I mean it could be something like zootopia100 or babylikestoeat.  I mean isn't that going to be already so tough as long as its not a really foolish word?
2305  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Wallet password protected and encrypted, is it safe ? on: April 10, 2019, 09:47:02 PM
Actually no.
The only protection (from the recent attacks) is to ALWAYS verify you download Electrum only from it's official website (https://electrum.org/#download)
Actually, that's half right... Wink

The only FULL protection, is to ALWAYS verify that you download Electrum only from the official site (https://electrum.org/#download) AND then verify the digital signature of the downloaded file BEFORE you install/run it.

Oh my god, thank you, now I know better. Anyway I checked the download source, I checked the signature, it all seems ok. I am connected on hodlister.co, which seems fine from the DOS attack so far.
This is possibly the single most important part of using Electrum safely.

The servers being under attack is really just an inconvenience if you're running the latest version. It doesn't affect the safety or security of your coins.

HCP, has there been cases where someone downloaded electrum from the actual electrum website and gotten a fake electrum installed?  You say the other half protection is verifying the signature of the downloaded file.  But is there a chance verifying the signature of the downloaded file could give you malware/keylogger/virus?
2306  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger S Passphrase 25th word on: April 10, 2019, 09:29:55 PM
Did you have to do this when you initialize the nano ledger s or you could do this anytime afterwards?  Example i set up my nano ledger s a while back and wrote down the 24 word seed.

Can i add a 25th word now?   Could i do this without having access to my 24 word seed?  My 24 word seed is in another location, not here so i don't have access to it.

Also is this called a 25th word or phrase?  So let your secret phrase is

I like piano

Then you confirm it twice?

So if someone has access to your 24 word seed, they still need to know your secret phrase

I like piano

in order to get access to your wallet?  Thus having the 24 word seed is not enough?  If that is the case, wouldn't it make sense for everyone to do this because if somehow the 24 word is exposed somehow, then they still need to know the 25th word or phrase?

Could i do this now on my nano ledger s if i do not have the 24 word seed in my location?  I do not have access to it at the moment.
2307  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to test 24 words on: April 08, 2019, 05:28:03 PM
Hi there.  I never tried this but you could turn on your ledger nano s by itself while not having it plugged into anything?  Example press a button on it right now while its not plugged into anything and you can enter a pin?

What do you mean use it by using a usb charger?

But there has been no cases where typing it in recovery key while using ledger live there was an issue right?

2308  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to test 24 words on: April 08, 2019, 06:47:23 AM
HCP.  So most people just download the app from ledger live.  Then when you use the program to check to see if 24 word is correct, its still connected to your laptop right?

You say to be on safe side, connect it to a usb charger.  Im confused what you mean by this?  So when checking the 24 word phrase, you don't want it connected to a computer?

What is the most common way ppl are checking their 24 word seed?  I thought it would be connect it to laptop, go to that program, enter the 24 words and then it checks?  You could use the nano ledger s without connecting it to a laptop???
2309  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: April 06, 2019, 12:15:55 AM
Hey hcp, yes i know even if someone has my electrum seed, they can't claim my btc or bitcoin cash because they are already moved to my nano ledger s.  Yes it make sense to claim whatever is the highest value.  That is why i went with bitcoin cash first.

Then i was going to do either bitcoin gold or SV

Crypto makes me panic.  Whenever i check firmware or anything like that, im panick.  I just can't help it.

With the bitcoin gold wallet you posted, isn't it true you need to download entire blockchain which takes a long time or something like that?

Thanks.
2310  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How many confirmed bitcoin forks are there? on: April 06, 2019, 12:12:57 AM
HCP thanks.

Well if you had like 5 bitcoin, that is 90 dollars. Yea i know that isn't much but if its easy to claim, well i thought you might as well get it if it isn't a hassle.

Yes i know about all the risk involved, thats why i didnt claim my bitcoin cash until recently.

So you have claimed bitcoin cash, bitcoin gold, bitcoin diamond?  So the only fork you didn't claim is bitcoin SV and bitcoin private?

Thanks.
2311  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How many confirmed bitcoin forks are there? on: April 05, 2019, 07:57:02 PM
Hi there.  Which coins did you claim with these programs?  Did you use bither or bitpie?  You used the same computer you downloaded electrum and electroncash on?
I haven’t actually used it. I just know that you can use it for that.

You could do on your own pc, or you could use another one, a temporary bootable OS or a virtual machine. It’s up to you and on how paranoid you are.

Okay so you have not done it.  Which means im not going to do it.  But you heard others say its reliable?

I'm very paranoid.  But i did downloaded electroncash on same computer as electrum and got my bitcoin cash fine.

So you only claimed bitcoin cash?  You didn't claim bitcoin gold or sv yet?  Do you plan to?  I don't know why i read lot of ppl don't claim bitcoin gold.  Is it a security issue?  If not, what harm is there for claiming it?  You can claim it and send it to your nano ledger s and just keep it there as oppose to not claiming it right?  I don't understand why ppl don't claim it if its not a security issue?
2312  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: April 05, 2019, 06:45:24 PM
HCP or anyone else, I have an android phone.  I also have my main phone, iphone.  I see that there is coinomi wallet in app store in ios.  Can anyone here confirm i could get my bitcoin gold through coinomi with my iphone?
2313  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin SV? on: April 05, 2019, 06:43:36 PM
Hi there.  The thing is had i claimed my bitcoin gold back then, i would not have sold it anyways.  I didnt want to claim it because of those fake wallets etc.

I just claimed my bitcoin cash not long ago from electroncash.

Well heres the thing.  I have an android phone so i could use that?  Could i use my iphone or not?  I see it has coinomi wallet in iphone app store... does that work?
2314  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How many confirmed bitcoin forks are there? on: April 05, 2019, 06:40:18 PM
Hi there.  Which coins did you claim with these programs?  Did you use bither or bitpie?  You used the same computer you downloaded electrum and electroncash on?
2315  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What do you think about Bitcoin Gold? on: April 05, 2019, 05:24:53 PM
How did you guys claim your bitcoin gold if you kept it in electrum at the time of the fork?

I was told electrumg may be good and the other is coinomi?  Any recommendation?  I claimed my bitcoin cash not long ago from electroncash.
2316  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is there any way to recover gmail? on: April 05, 2019, 05:22:58 PM
Wouldn't this be a bit of an issue because the hacker would be logging into your gmail account from another country though and it say don' recognize device?
2317  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Creating strong password. on: April 05, 2019, 05:20:58 PM
How do you even remember these passwords then if so many cap and lower case letters?
2318  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How many confirmed bitcoin forks are there? on: April 05, 2019, 05:03:05 PM
HCP, did you claim bitcoin diamond diamond and private fork?  If so, where was your btc at the time of those forks?  I had btc in electrum when both of those happened when i look at the dates of those forks.

Which program did you use and which you suggest if i do it now?
2319  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: April 05, 2019, 05:00:00 PM
Hi HCP.  So I have Bitcoin Cash.  Wait so other exchanges like bittrex or any other exchanges, they call Bitcoin Cash... Bitcoin Cash ABC or its only binane?  I always thought because of the bitcoin fork, they just named it Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV?

Okay i made a mistake with what you said about electrumg.  sorry about that.

Can anyone here endorse electrumG?  I would like to get my bitcoin gold now and claim it so i dont have to in the futre.

The thing is if i claim my bitcoin gold through say android and coinomi or through electrumg, well the danger is you expose you bitcoin wallet if you download wrong program.  But since i moved my btc to nano ledger s already and claimed my bitcoin cash from electroncash already since bitcoin was in electrum at the time of the bitcoin cash and gold fork, is there anything im exposed to?  Thus my original 12 word seed in electrum is just the bitcoin gold now?  But what about diamond and private?

Because ppl said if you claim bitcoin cash or gold, make sure you move your btc to another wallet.  Well does that mean even if some issue happens with bitcoin gold, thats all i lose?  However, there is bitcoin diamond and bitcoin private which i believe are the only 2 other legit forks besides bitcoin cash and gold and sv?  So you basically lose your bitcoin diamond and private if download incorrect wallet?

Okay well is my situation a bit different?  I kept btc in electrum at time of bitcoin cash and gold fork.  Also i kept btc in electrum at the time of bitcoin diamond and private fork if there was one.

I did not claim but bitcoin cash till recent using electroncash.  So I'm still eligible to claim bitcoin SV even though I didn't claim my bitcoin cash recently via electrum?  Because i know how you get Bitcoin SV depends on where your bitcoin cash is located.  But i never claimed my bitcoin cash before that date of the bitcoin SV fork.  So does that mean my bitcoin cash was in electroncash at the time?  What confuses me is well couldn't you claim your bitcoin cash from another wallet as oppose to electroncash if you kept btc in electrum?  Because if so, then wouldn't that mean your bitcoin cash is located in somewhere else?  Or its always located in electroncash?
2320  Bitcoin / Electrum / How many confirmed bitcoin forks are there? on: April 05, 2019, 07:24:23 AM
I claimed bitcoin cash with electron cash not that long ago thanks to the help of posters like HCP here on this forum and tryninja.

I know there is bitcoin gold and bitcoin sv.  But what about those other bitcoin forks that were talked about a long time ago?  Is bitcoin private real or not?  I know there were like another 10 bitcoin forks a while back but no idea if those are even legit or not.
