2301  Other / Off-topic / Re: #DeGoogle - Take back control of your privacy on: May 12, 2020, 09:30:23 AM
I'm glad to see people finally waking up to the reality & see how their data is mined and used. Well done!

One little mention: when you listed the Android custom ROMs, you can remove the "Rooted Device required" note. As soon as you have an unlocked bootloader, you can flash a custom ROM (I personally prefer TWRP) through which you can easily backup your current OS and install a fresh new one. But root isn't necessary.

I'm very curious, why did you list all 3 ROMs (LineageOS, Graphene OS and Replicant) as "5 Eyes"?

Here are two more IM (Instant Messenger) apps I suggest to those willing to Degoogle:
  • Conversations (FREE from F-Droid; Expert Settings has an option to enable Tor routing)
  • Briar (FREE from Play Store; this one is completely decentralised, works through any connection (Bluetooth, local hotspot, Wi-Fi, Mobile Data but might drain the battery faster)

If you wish, you could also include some computer Operating Systems as (free) replacements for Windows:
  • Qubes OS - Runs each app in a separate Virtual Machine but has pretty high system requirements
  • Parrot OS - Runs on Debian and has lots of interesting features especially when it comes to cryptography, hacking etc, the one I like the most being Anonsurf (running system-wide Tor for anonymity)
  • Tails - Temporary amnesic OS that resets & deletes any change upon reboot. You could flash it on an >8GB USB stick. I use it the most for browsing and downloading stuff I only need temporarily.
  • Basically any Linux system - Most Linux systems are better than Windows when it comes to privacy. The most-known distros such as Debian, Arch Linux, Ubuntu etc also have amazing support from the community in case you ever have a problem (and most issues are easily solvable through simple Internet searches).

The first thing we should do in my opinion is changing the OS of your mobile phones and computers. Swapping Chrome for Tor Browser, for example is of no use if the system itself scraps data off your computer/mobile. Remember, do NOT flash the GApps file on your phone! Only the Custom ROM; installing GApps will install all the Google stuff.

Overall, it's a great post. If someone could give the OP 5 Merits from me, I'd be grateful Grin

I'm interested in translating this topic to my Local board. Let's spread the word!

I would prefer if every coinbase contained a timeline of the current state of the economy, rather than just the halving block.
Not a bad idea at all, but it's interesting to see how things changed in a matter of 11 years. I think it's pretty neat, especially as it's like a parallel to Satoshi's preferred Genesis Block message. Smiley
2303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Billionaire Paul Tudor Jones says he has almost 2% of his assets in it on: May 11, 2020, 07:59:10 PM
The good thing about billionaires :-

They can actually afford to invest money in volatile market and even if they loose a lot they are still going to be financially stable.

Therefore I do believe that all of the millionaires and the billionaires have invested some amount of the money in Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies and therefore it is Preety common.

What they choose to say in front of the society is different , they might now like admitting it but I do think these people who are always welcoming to new thoughts and new investments would already be investing in cryptocurrencies since years .

I think this is not a new thing but Preety common one .

If you had a net worth of $100B and lost 2% of it ($2B), you'd still have $98B left which is a damn lot but you'd feel the change. Billionaires and other successful people usually don't tell the best part of their plans, which for many could actually be hodling a huge load of Bitcoin. I also think a pretty large part of them hodl BTC but hide it. It's just too profitable not to put at least $500k in it if you have $100M sitting around. Cheesy

Yuup +10 xD can somebothy move the post where it belongs? XD dont want to putit in 2 places. ^
Not sure if Newbies are able to, but in the bottom-left corner of the thread you might see a "Move Topic" button. Grin

I personally believe it could be a little hype now that the halving is finally in, but I don't think it'll be a continuous ride. Will take months to rise to the post-halving level, if it even happens. For now, I'd either accumulate or hodl. Every time I sold turned into a regret Cheesy

As far as I see, the trend for now has been a positive one since halving took place. Hopefully it lasts long enough. Let's have some finally good news for 2020, right? Smiley
2306  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core blockchain portability on: May 11, 2020, 07:25:24 PM
!! All information below is for Windows. If you're using another OS, let me know and I'll update the directories to the correct ones Smiley Please also backup your .dat files before making any changes in the blockchain data directories.

>If I did have the blockchain downloaded and I wanted to move my external hard drive (pruned/no blockchain) and plug it into another computer, could I still access the Bitcoin Core wallet? (Everything is on the external hdd including Bitcoin Core)
As long as you have the data directory files on the external disk and your Core wallet on the secondary computer is configured properly to use the data from it, yes - you could.

If you want to make use of the data from your external hard disk, all you have to do is plug in the external disk, launch the Core wallet on the secondary PC and set the external disk as your data directory.

As far as I know, you can set the data directory the following way:
  • If it's the first time you're starting Bitcoin Core, upon launch a window will pop up asking where you'd like to store the blockchain data. Set that manually to the external disk instead of the default folder
  • If it's not the first time you're starting the Core wallet, then you probably already have a ".config" file created. Go to the data directory folder of your Core wallet (the default is %appdata%\Roaming\<yourwalletname>), open the ".conf" file and edit the line "datadir=A:\Example\Path" to send the Core wallet to the correct path.

>If no, could I do that if I did have the blockchain downloaded onto the external hdd?
I think you just said above this question that you had the data already downloaded on the external HDD? Grin

>And if I wanted to setup a new wallet on a new computer, could I just copy and paste the blockchain directory into the Bitcoin Core folder on the other computer?
You can either:
  • Plug the external HDD with the existing blockchain data on it into another computer
  • Open a Bitcoin Core wallet executable file on the computer and upon the first-start window manually select the external HDD
or
  • Plug the external HDD with the existing blockchain data on it into the secondary computer
  • From your external HDD, copy all the data directory files except the ".conf" file (if you have one)
  • Paste the files into the directory you'd like to store them on the secondary computer (default directory is %appdata%\Roaming\<yourwalletname>)
  • Plug out the external HDD and set the copied directory as the data directory by following the answer of the first question

>And then would I still need to download anything over say 50-100GB to sync that new wallet up?
As long as the files you have in the data directory are up-to-date, no. But if you're missing 50GB of data, affirmative - it'll need to download that much as it obviously needs to keep up with the network or your transaction history and account balance would otherwise not be accurate, real-time. 2307  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Creating semi-nodes to sustain the network on: May 11, 2020, 03:01:54 PM
Really we do put some trust in central servers in the codebase with the use of the DNS seeds those nodes are normally what a new node will connect to in most cases so we already have some hard coded nodes in the codebase to trust when connecting to the network  I think the above is a very interesting idea and is worthy of more discussion.  Great topic!
Thank you!

Oh, now I get it! I do remember now there was a list you could check on Electrum where you'd see all accepted/trusted nodes. IIRC, it asked you even upon install to which server you'd like to connect. The years of not using any other wallet besides Ledger are now starting to show up.. Cheesy

The problem would be if only a handful of servers (say Blockstream and 2-3 more "big data companies" as Chlotide says) were to hold the full nodes we'd have to trust. As far as I can tell, that could easily lead to a few of them working together on attacking the network.

2309  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Creating semi-nodes to sustain the network on: May 11, 2020, 02:36:58 PM
I believe the OP is talking about something like pruned semi-archival nodes, but with incomplete parts of the blockchain archived in different "slices".

It still downloads, and validates everything, with only a "slice" of the blockchain is in storage, plus the latest blocks of the pruned node of course.
That's right. If 10 users were to be assigned a slice, you would have to download only 10% of the network. If I've been using SPV only until now on my mobile phone, this would make it possible for me to also store a part of the blockchain and support the network. I understand the advantages of running a full node, but having a device with smaller storage space doesn't really give you any choice besides running a wallet in SPV mode (or with pruning).

But yeah, the idea sounds easier than done as always and I do get that. Sounds easy to talk about "assigning a slice to every new wallet user choosing semi-nodes" but to accomplish an idea and still keep everything 100% decentralized and at least a bit conveninent is probably much harder.

Using data center (along with VPS) is somewhat common practice when setup full node client due to lower costs, we only can hope that not everyone use same hosting provider (e.g. AWS and DigitalOcean).
Well, Chlotide's reply sounds more like talking about the centralization of nodes hence my reply:

~
Indeed, there is the possibility that nodes will be held in the future only in data centers and the network would rely mostly on big data companies. Who knows ?
Maybe they will launch 1000 blockstream satellites, maybe Elon installs a node on his 40.000 satellites

Looks like Binance's is now down too. Well, hopefully in 5 hours there'll be at least 1 site still running to look at the countdown from Cheesy If not, I guess live block explorers work too! Grin

Will leave here a few explorers you can also check in case these websites from OP fall (block no. 630,000 is the halving one):
2312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How are you celebrating Bitcoin Halving? - less than 9 hours to go on: May 11, 2020, 01:10:19 PM
I'll celebrate by buying a little bit more BTC, unplugging & locking my Ledger and leaving it there for the years to come. I ain't going to touch my BTC again for a long time. Smiley

Besides this.. no parties, no other kind of celebration. I'll celebrate for real when Bitcoin will show a large success. Grin
2313  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silk road-founder-ross-ulbricht-predicts-bitcoins-price-falling-to-3200 on: May 11, 2020, 12:48:45 PM
Not that I support drugs, crimes and human trafficking but I see so much hate against Ross from everyone here without even considering the fact that The Silk Road was one of the reasons many people started spreading the word about BTC. Although he did create a black market for illegal activities, without it and his conviction maybe some of us wouldn't be here right now. Personal opinion.

Most of the people I know have heard of Bitcoin from the news/internet and they always mention either "black market", "a website where illegal things are sold" or "silk road". I just feel like it's one of the key points that propped BTC to the adoption and popularity it has now.
2314  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Recommended readings before investing into bitcoin? on: May 11, 2020, 12:33:47 PM
I preferred to learn from practice as it's much more exciting than reading a book in my opinion - I know, everyone has a different taste. I have lots of books at home I just never had patience to finish reading, although they're very interesting. Practice makes perfect, they say - that's what I'd rather go for. Smiley

Simply reading this forum often, trying out different crypto platforms, using Bitcoin with different wallets, trying out even other cryptocurrencies and answering all questions you may have is going to widen your knowledge spectrum before you even know it.

Chiar n-am avut habar despre faptul ca le-au facut acum gratuite - probabil au adus sponsori care sa ii finanteze sau vor pune reclame. Multumim pentru informatie Smiley
2316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One thought about what can happen after the Btc Halving. on: May 11, 2020, 08:47:05 AM
If that would've been the case, Bitcoin would have been done years ago.

No halving had an instant price increase. In fact, there were more hard dumps than price increases and yet Bitcoin has survived and has had no 51% attack.

Was there someone with a lot of power to create a 51% attack, they would've left the mining network for 2016 blocks and then return with an attack. They aren't going to wait years for the perfect opportunity.
2317  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Help upgrading Nano Ledger S on: May 10, 2020, 07:57:17 PM
As you first tried it on a PC it didn't work on, I suppose it's your main computer so, if you wish, I could try helping you out and solve the problem on it.

Does the upgraded Ledger now work with Ledger Live on the first PC or does it still give the same "Oops, couldn't connect to device" error?

If it gives the same error, have you tried the tips BitCryptex linked you to? Try running Ledger Live on the first computer as an Administrator (right click Ledger Live -> Run as Administrator -> if a window pops up asking whether you'd like running it as an administrator, press Yes), it usually fixed my connection problems.

I did - and again - THANK YOU - I was sleeping poorly due to possibility of loosing a lot of savings
As long as you still have the seed, there's really nothing to worry about. Grin
2318  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: basic questions on: May 10, 2020, 07:49:23 PM
Ty for helping.
KYS no problem for me.
Coinbase doesnt have a service to send to another wallet.
Sell is same to send btc to my friend? (e.g.)

What do you mean?

Coinbase has a wallet you can send and receive from. As long as you're sending to a correct BTC address, the Bitcoin you send from Coinbase will arrive into the wallet whether it's an Electrum, Bread, Bitfinex or paper wallet.

Selling isn't the same as sending BTC to your friend. Selling is only exchanging funds - when you sell BTC, you receive another currency in exchange in your own wallet.
2319  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paper wallet or Hardware wallet on: May 10, 2020, 07:45:39 PM
~ damage ~
Back when I used paper wallets, I laminated them to prevent some mistakes like water droplets from damaging them. Before I had a laminator, I used scotch (applied transparent scotch all over the paper and left a frame of 5-6mm I carefully cut with a scissor).

~
This will probably sound strange, but my opinion is that if a paper wallet is created with all precautions that you can, it is more secure than a hardware wallet.
~
Not really. You could be writing down the seed into Electrum and have your funds sweeped out of the wallet in half a second by some malware. You could be pasting the wrong address into Electrum when sending due to some script and you'd get some financial damage. There are plenty of things that could happen when wrongly using a wallet and I think the price of a hardware wallet is worth it. There are some cheaper HWs out there, or you could be hunting for some Ledger or Trezor sales.

If you're printing the paper wallet, your printer may hold the PDF in its internal memory (if it has one) and once you connect it to some infected PC, poof! Your wallet would be gone in no time.

Moreover, you could do a little silly mistake with a very large cost like sweeping the paper wallet only partially and having the rest of the funds go to a change address you don't own.

Take the HW wallet with you anywhere and if you lose it, within 3 tries a thief would lose any chance to get into your funds. Once you got home, you'd have the funds back. If there's no thief around looking for Hardware Wallets, you could use yours from your phone (at least Ledger) to pay and receive.

It's just worth it.

This is exactly why I always say the real halving price will be shown only about 1 year post halving, but I've never seen a chart about it. It's just a feeling I have probably since I've been through the 2016 halving.

$100k would be insane though if that's where we're headed. If only everything somehow gets back to normal so all investors & hodlers could have fun with their returns.
