Apart from dementia, and taken this issue more seriously, scam victims are often people in need of something and believing to have found it.
As you said, FatherMcGruder, "he was an asshole", so I assume that guy wasn't quite popular, have few to no friends... that was the need the scammer filled (thus for a while); be his friend... for a price.
I got amazed sometime ago for an instance with Romance Scams, which happens to work better on women than men (go figure!).

But to the very end, the success of a scam relies not on dementia, not on the victim to be an idiot, but basically to exploit sometimes pretty common feelings as friendship.

Haha, Does anyone actually fall for those things?

Beats me, but looking at my spam folder, they probably do succeed, taken the amount of mails there.
Well... within 6 bln people one probably would find some eediots.  Grin

I normally collect a lot of 419 Scams and general mail junk on accounts I used at least once to sign some GPLed project. Anyway, today I received - at least that I noticed - my first ever 419 scam mail with a price tag already attached.
To celebrate the event I decided to create a banner for them.  Grin

@prcarter,

That's what I'd been trying to tell since the beginning of my intervention here. Already enough to got misunderstood and confused by a Baron's clone.
This whole mess is hitting BTC hard, rates just keep dropping, and again... all thanks to Jed finding play CSI as his new hobby...
2346  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 19, 2011, 01:06:11 AM
Holy... whatever!

This is still going?!  Shocked

And now with names... what next? Let's open a Wikipedia page? Can we have a pic of MtGox's former and present CEO for that Wiki article?
2347  Other / Off-topic / Re: Japan's earthquake: 3/11/11 on: March 17, 2011, 12:43:12 AM
Dear Japanese friend, sorry for can't read your nick but I can't read Japanese.

I'm sorry for what happened there and for being total hopeless about helping you out. Living in the other side of the planet and not being rich doesn't allow me to do much more than express my feelings and sorrow for the victims.
A bit like curator, except I've no "imaginary friend" who can go there give an imaginary hand - guess that's one use of God; give a sort of relief from being hopeless. A reason why you can see God always on "perfect business"; if something good happens "it was God", when something bad happens it was... was... I don't have a clue. Imaginary friends doesn't need to be coherent, do they?

Further than that I've to give the Japanese people my best congratulations on their behavior, even within chaos they keep their discipline high, aware that indiscipline would just make the situation worse for all. Certainly a lesson of life and civilization.
Wishes of best of luck with the works on Fukushima and a swift recovery.
2348  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Sports Bets added to BitYacht on: March 08, 2011, 02:51:29 PM
Iya,

Those sports bets works like lotto, the others you're possibly more used to see on the web display odds, let's you bet on real time and so on... those are bets against the house, the house starts them by specialists then goes taking its cut along the betting.

There will also be no need to such event to have even bets because they're real events with real odds - put Real Madrid x Some team nobody ever heard about and it's clearly that the majority will go for RM. Ultimately the odds will be set by the betting pattern.
Say, to this distribution:
Team A - 100 bets
Draw - 10 Bets
Team B - 5 Bets

Odds then are: 1.15:1 Team A, 11.5:1 Draw, 23:1 Team B
2349  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Sports Bets added to BitYacht on: March 08, 2011, 01:29:14 PM
Odds require a body of experts to start them out and makes you to play "against the house", because then I would need to say you win 8/1 or 6/1 by betting this, without knowing how many people will be betting and what will be the prize pool.

The whole concept here goes around play against players not the house, like lotto, you don't know how many will be betting to share the prize pool. A very simple concept indeed.
2350  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Play Yacht against other players for BTC on: March 08, 2011, 12:11:09 PM
Still hard to find folks who like to play yacht - or even know how to do it. Not a mainframe game, I know, but very addictive anyway, as long as you get used to it.

On the other feature, after the tests, I put up to run the bets on EC round of 16. Good luck.
2351  Economy / Marketplace / Re: How do you see MtGox (objective/neutral, not rigged poll) on: March 05, 2011, 04:04:22 PM
I think he's OK... but not knowing where to step into.
Wants to run a clearly black exchange, but to abide with law. Question is "what law"?! US law?! Why?! Not all his costumers are American, nor he for what it seams. Also there're thousands of "laws" around...  Roll Eyes

If wine has been banned on eBay I may think of it.
A bottle here can go as low as 1,50 €  Grin - and I'm not talking of cheap wine.
2353  Economy / Marketplace / Re: CoinCard - Buying PayPal $ and gift cards with Bitcoin on: March 04, 2011, 08:51:36 PM
mndrix, I'm curious how many trades on coincard do you have daily. Can you reveal at least rough numbers? :-)

Sure.  Over the last 8 days, I've done about 60 orders averaging about 40 BTC each.  I've had a couple large orders, but most have been between 5-20 BTC

From me you got 150 BTC. (3x 50)
With them I ended up buying an unlocked Blackberry for 20 GBP  Grin The rest is still on PayPal for the next bargain.
2354  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Files you want! on: March 04, 2011, 02:40:30 PM
I think your bitcoind is down. And, you should change its password. NOW. Smiley

And switching off display_errors on php under production environment wouldn't be that bad idea also.
2355  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Files you want! on: March 03, 2011, 10:25:43 AM
BTW flix,
Although your service seams cool, pretty much you could replace Megaupload and Rapidshare on the BTC community - on those you pay to the company who gets 99% of the profit (or you can download for free if you're REALLY patient) and probably will give that 1% to the uploader.

I have a few questions:

Is there a file size/extension restrictions?
What's the bandwidth capacity of the server?
2356  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The "Why We Trust Mt. Gox" thread on: March 02, 2011, 11:06:03 PM
Just so you know, many of us here are anarchists, and care not one whit whether or not any state considers mtgox to be a "legitimate" business. So while that may be a concern for you, don't assume that it is a concern for anybody else.

Issue; if you are anarchist you wouldn't want any form of state, be it an organized state as we do have normally, or mtgox's state.

I don't care for this specific issue, I care for overall damage on BTC, being mtgox the core of BTC exchanging any damage to mtgox roundabout to damage the community. This Baron vs mtgox shouldn't be taken place here in the bitcoin core.
Void threats with "I unleash my lawyers at you (and they're rabid)" and so on...  Angry

Yes, to this I agree, things like this:

and the account and account owner are being investigated by mtgox.

are way funny!  Grin

Like I said... 20 pages ago(?!)... too much CSI. Part-time Horatio Caine.  Grin

Stop being cheap folks! It doesn't look like that bad idea.
2359  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 08:36:51 PM
I don't think things are so bad in the U.S. that scammers are now able to sue the people who they failed to scam.

Think again...
