241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IS BITCOIN A CIA PROJECT? on: August 01, 2014, 09:39:44 PM
I'm not saying I agree or that it's true... but it's a good thing to have an open mind.

Let's say this was their 'project'. It's ran wild for several years... enough time to per-fect the concept. If the goal is to create a world-wide currency, they know it works and we'd accept it. Let's say they're ready to implement. They don't have to take bitcoin - a new coin altogether can be developed, distributed and completely controlled by 'them'. No miners needed. But what about all the crypto floating around now? idk... maybe they'd make it illegal to mine/possess them, or even mandate ISPs to block mining packets. <--- that would be the end of crypto currency as we know it.
242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IS BITCOIN A CIA PROJECT? on: August 01, 2014, 08:49:38 PM
Interesting indeed. I think we've proven/provided lessons learned when it comes time for mainstream adoption  Wink
243  Other / Meta / Re: Time to Move Bitcoin 2.0 tech (Counterparty/Mastercoin) out of "Alt Coins" on: August 01, 2014, 08:41:08 PM
Wow this got buried from the front page to > Other > Meta in record time. Compared to the nonsense that gets posted up top no one has a chance to do any real bitcoin discussion anymore. WTF?

Evidently not. The sad thing is... I've never came across a thread about Countypary or Bitcoin 2.0 Tech, because I'd be all over it! Lol. I'm constantly checking the latest posts, but I only go through the first couple of pages. Of course it only takes a new thread a minute before it's on page 6

But this makes your point, I get it.
244  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: BOUNTY - Mining & Hosting P2Pools on: August 01, 2014, 08:15:46 PM
Sure no problem, If you want to jump on IRC, and join my channel on freenode #ThePeePs, i'll help you as much as you need.  If you don't have an IRC client, or dont know hoave to use one, there's a chat page on my p2pool page (see my sig for the link).  Sorry to hear about your external HDD.  Have you heard of SpinRite?  It's saved my bacon a few times.  It's $90 US, but it's well worth the price. Should be the first link in a google search.

Cool and no I haven't! I'll look into it. I was able to format mine from my PC - that's all windows wanted to do with it, so I had no other choice as I wanted to save as much as I could from my internal drive! I'm nervous about those corrupted errors I was getting while my files were being copied... but I just want to get the server fully configured before diving back into the installing what I need for the p2pool and mining.

I don't have an IRC client, but I got a lil experience using the web version - can you believe it... IRC cherry only recently popped, lol. I'll look you up Smiley
245  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Pool advertising is no longer allowed on: August 01, 2014, 08:06:04 PM
A few thoughts as both a pool op and a miner.

Pools should be allowed to post ONCE per thread that they are going to support the coin in the thread, any more they should be banned. I don't feel that just posting in the thread talking about the coin, hoping others read their sig to check the pool's mining thread is fair at all.  I agree that the huge pool posts, and pool spamming needed to stop, but this rule takes it to the extreme is is too far.

Second, if a coin is having an issue (blockchain fork, hard fork, etc) pools should be able to post in the thread to say the have updated to the new code, are now on the correct fork, etc.  Having to jump between the coin's ann thread and the pools mining thread when there's an issue will do more harm then good to the miner's trying to get info on where to mine.

Putting the dev in charge of updating the OP is bad for two reasons (already stated, but needs to be said again).  This allows the dev way to much power in what pools he/she wants to have support the coin, and could make or break a pool depending on if the coin is successful and the dev decides not to list it, or didn't see the pool's PM.  During a launch, the dev should be concentrating on making sure the coin and it's network are operating as expected, and not having to check their PM's every 5 min to see if pool want's to support the coin or not. The dev has enough to worry about already and this will only make their job that much harder. (the good dev's that is)

What about multipool's who's soul purpose is to support that coin?  Are they allowed to post update, etc, or does it too need to have it's own tread in the mining section?

Good points. This is definitely more advantageous for the larger pools. I'm not sure of the process, but I've seen pools listed on the very first announcement. Maybe they reached out to the coin dev after the pre announcement?

Status update -

I had to start from scratch Sad  I literally couldn't even mount my external dvd drive to boot from cd. I guess when I uninstalled the GUI, something relating to blueman got screwed up and I couldn't install or repair anything without errors. I don't use bluetooth so didn't think there would've been an issue removing/disabling those services but evidently that damn package had its hand in everything. It's a confirmed bug that's still open with no resolution.

To top that off - my external drive, where my backups were stored, was corrupted. This was probably the nemesis that caused this all, because I tried restoring from backup a couple of times. Needless to say, I ended up having to reformat the drive because my PC, MAC, or other linux system couldn't recognize it. So I lost all my data from there. Luckily I was able to copy files back onto it from safe mode, but got several corrupted errors. At this point, I don't know what can be saved from the hard drive.

Anyhoo - I went ahead and installed ubuntu server 14 and a very lightweight GUI (that I don't like). I haven't configured or reinstall anything as of yet, because I want to look in using the VM first.

ThePeePs, I could use your help with this one.

248  Economy / Lending / Re: Locked keys in car, between jobs, need 1 Btc fast, pay 10% interest. on: August 01, 2014, 06:58:25 PM
Wow. Just wow.

I haven't seen an act of generosity like this in a long time. Maybe it's a sign Smiley

bipolarbob, you rock. Whatever your reason, there's definitely some good karma to come out of this.

dev either lazy or moron

+1

I lost 0.09 btc on this one. My 1st purchase ever on a coin and it turned into a shit coin.

It unfortunate you lost out... next time just do a little more research before investing. I wanted to mine this coin myself but I found a few missing lines in the source code - this was mentioned in the thread. While not indicative of being a shitcoin, that should've set off a red flag to you.
250  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Beastlymac - scammed me for 3.1 btc - gridseeds group buy on: August 01, 2014, 04:12:32 PM
fair is to

1. refund value of miners dated at 10.03 (since beastlymac went to silence mode, when he got what he asked)
2. erase false feedback left on both accounts

what do you think?

thanks

But you would be contradicting your own agreement. Why would you expect a refund on the 10th, when you had agreed to the terms that you wouldn't be entitled a full refund after the order was placed, which was the 7th. It falls on the buyer, not the seller, that you demanded a full refund, 3 days after the 'deadline' to request said refund. You can't blame the seller for that, ya know?

Going 'silent' as you put it is irrelevant UNLESS it was on or before the 7th. Which as far as I can see, everyone agrees there was no attempt of communication on or before the 7th.

From my understanding, no refunds are granted after the order is placed with the manufacturer (which I totally understand). When the OP requested a refund, he wouldn't have known the order was already sent to the manf unless that date was posted in the thread. But even if it were, his name wasn't on the public list (because he didn't send his mailing address), so there would be no way to determine whether his order was included in that bunch.

The key date is when the order was placed with the manufacturer, not the date OP purchased. OP requested a refund days after placing his order, but unfortunately by that time, the order was already placed with the manf, hence no refund. No doubt the original communication dragged on for months unnecessarily - and as I've stated before based on the messages /emails sent I'd think my refund was in the works too... but order rules are order rules.

I absolutely agree with you that everything isn't a clear open and shut, no room to debate otherwise, situation. I think the situation could have been more clear if the seller had worded things differently in an early on PM. I don't see it as malicious on his part, just a communications issue, because in the end there was never a lie or any false information being passed. But equally, I think the situation could have been more clear if the buyer had worded things differently in his early PM's as well. Equally, not malicious on the buyer's part, but with such a large transaction taken place, perhaps a straight forward question to the seller about the refund would have cleared this up early, as opposed to just assuming a full refund is coming without actually asking for a straight forward answer.

I don't think either party intended on screwing over the other, and if one side flat out lied at the time to stall time, then I would understand the frustration. Should the seller have said flat out no refunds on the first message that couldn't be debated as meaning anything else? Absolutely. Should the buyer have asked flat out, am I receiving a full 100% refund as per my request on the 10th, again, prompting a straight forward answer that couldn't be debated meaning anything else? Absolutely.

Well said; no doubt you're able to look at this objectively. It's pretty obvious the lack of clear communication, on both sides, contributed to the misunderstanding - definitely a lesson to be learned. I totally agree with you, malice isn't a factor here.

252  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Pool advertising is no longer allowed on: August 01, 2014, 06:23:07 AM
Not a bad idea if you ask me. Some of these pools jump on any and every coin - even the obvious scams. This can be somewhat misleading to people who are looking for a viable coin to mine and may not have enough knowledge to determine that for themselves; 10 pool listings in a couple of pages of posts might appear to be a 'good' coin, but that may not be the case. This is probably a factor that contributes to pump and dumps. And of course all that does is foster the creation of more shit/scam coins - vicious cycle.

This person continues to flame, argue and act very immature in public forums with me (someone who's got no business relationship) just simply inserting their nose in to my life and trying to make a problem.

Another warning to deal with EXTREME caution. You can clearly see here that this person is a train wreck: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=710658.msg8113149#msg8113149

Thanks for posting this! You linked everyone to the thread that shows how you're trying to extort me.
254  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: BOUNTY - Mining & Hosting P2Pools on: July 30, 2014, 10:49:06 PM
It would depend on what the error was.  On my main desktop, i HAVE to run memtest86 from the CD, as it will not load from grub (never took the time to figure out why).

As for your mouning problem; fstab is only used for auto mounting (at system startup) or to manually mount per-defined mounts (that you would use on a reg basis, but not needed to be mounted at boot).  If the drive shows up in /dev then it can be mounted manually in one two ways.

If you know what it gets lettered as (ie: sdb, or sdc, etc) then, as root, you can mount it by
Code:
mount /dev/sdb /path/to/mount/point

Or, open the file explorer, and look on the left, and see if you drive is listed there, if so click on it, and it should mount it for you.

I don't have a GUI anymore, so no more clicking on the icon, lol. But it used to show up there up until about a week ago, then it disappeared... I haven't been able to mount it since. I also tried the command you suggested... But I get an error. Something to do about wrong format or something... I'm on the way home but I can tell you exact error when I get there. I messed up mounting last week when I tried to change my backup config via Webmin. For some reason, some changes apply via we min and some don't. I was actually going to remove/purge and reinstall because I I'd try to add a process to start at boot or something, and it refuse to accept it. Although that was the original setting that I stopped.

I'll post more when I get home...
255  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: BOUNTY - Mining & Hosting P2Pools on: July 30, 2014, 05:12:56 PM
You can use your Ubuntu CD (or USB stick if you used that to install instead) to boot, but NOT re-install and you will have access to all of your files on your drive.

I would suggest this.

After you have all of your files backed up, reinstall, restore your files, get everything the way you want it.  If it's a server, do suggest w/o a gui.

Before you fire your p2pool nodes back up, install VirtualBox, and create a VM for your P2Pool nodes (it's how i run mine).  on your VM, run the coin daemons, and have their P2P port open to inet for incoming connections, as well as the P2Pool ports.  Then on your host machine run the wallets (either daemon or qt) and in the conf file put connect=<IP.of.your.VM> this way your wallet will remain synced to the network.

This serves two purposes
  • Your P2Pool node(s), and your personal wallet(s) are separate (less risk of losing coins)
  • You will be able to better track what is using resources.

Hope this helps.

Um... YES! I didn't know i could use the CD to boot, it's just the original ISO image, nice! I'm having an hell of a time trying to mount my external drive; guess I screwed that up somehow as well because it's not being recognized anymore. I'll try and do this today after work... if this works out - bounty to you!

You can use gparted to look to see if your external drive is seen by the system. (or tail the messages/syslog files and look for err msg's)

Also, iirc the CD should also have an option to boot into memtest86.  I would let that run for a least a few complete passes on each test.

Okay, I'll try this too! I looked at the fstab (I think) and it showed up, I just can't seem to mount it so I can transfer my files to it Sad  I'm not a techie so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.

I did try the memtest option from GRUB but it gave me an error. Will this test let me know whether my initial issue was due to memory?
256  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Beastlymac - scammed me for 3.1 btc - gridseeds group buy on: July 30, 2014, 05:07:25 PM
Here is a question I would like to ask everyone except bbxx
On topic. If I do not get a response from curiousminer in the next 5 days in regards to shipping his 5 chip devices OR auctioning them off I am inclined to default to auctioning them. The default auction terms (he is welcome to change them) are such that the starting bid would be 0.01BTC with bidding increments of 0.001BTC the devices would then be shipped to the winner and all funds collected would be sent through to curiousminer along with the already stated 1btc. Anybody who reads this (I feel this in the current situation one where curiousminer is unresponsive to my pm that this is the only option for resolving this quickly) please post here or pm me what your opinion is on this form of resolution.

I would also like to state for the record this resolution option was not thought up by me but was recommended as a way of resolving the situation.

I will pm curiousminer again. I will link this post and ask for his decision within 5 days.

Again, Beastlymac, the manner in which you've handled this speaks volumes, and I applaud your professionalism and determination in getting this resolved. Please continue to set a good example for members who find themselves in similar situations. I've never made any transactions with you, but given your track record, I wouldn't have any doubt with trusting you.

To all-

In my opinion, this resolution is fair and kudos to whomever suggested it. My suggestion to curiousminer was to accept the 1btc refund and the devices he paid for. But as it seems he's not willing to provide shipping information, I don't see Beastlymac having any other choice.... Unless he decides to say the hell with it and keep everything... But I get a sense that's not in his character.
257  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: BOUNTY - Mining & Hosting P2Pools on: July 30, 2014, 01:37:25 PM
Also wondering why under heavier (all gpus and nodes) it crashes and now it crashed on its own.  Did you swap the HD cable to when you swapped drives and I would still test the memory and make sure bios updated.

Well, it's not crashing on it's own... I messed around with a few config files here and there so that's totally my fault. No, I didn't swap out the HD cable, but I used a different port (is that the same?). The bios is up to date, but I'll also test the memory as well as soon as it's back online. I can't do anything with it at this point until I fixed my big boo-boo! lol

This forum user engaged in a defamatory campaign against evershawn without a reasonable justification. After confront evershaw, this forum user left a negative feedback in his profile because he did not reacted as expected. This forum user was rewarded with a positive feedback by other forum users involved in the defamatory campaign. Such person purposelessly formatted the post of a sock puppet account to highlight the false accusations perpetrated by others. Be careful when trading with this forum user! You can end as a victim of his unreasonable behaviour if you do not comply with his demands.

Seriously?! I left negative feedback because evershawn's continuing to harass people, just as you're now doing the same. Acting as expected would be to calmly handle the situation, not stating that you want to strangle someone and launch a hate campaign against them. Now here comes your negative feedback for leaving this unwarranted post in my Rep thread.
260  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Beastlymac - scammed me for 3.1 btc - gridseeds group buy on: July 30, 2014, 01:09:38 PM
Beastlymac, if they don't want the devices/1btc refund, hell I'll take it! lol

But on a more tone -

curiousminer and bbxx, there's a time to let go and that time past awhile ago. Again, my advice to you is to take the devices already paid for and the 1btc refund. The more you post, the more it validates my assessment that this is as a result of a communication breakdown... I'm having a difficult time reading your posts so it's quite possible that curiousminer misunderstood a few things here and there.
