241  Other / Meta / Moderator for scandinavian forum? on: August 26, 2011, 05:56:51 PM
Is there no moderator at all for the scandinavian forum? 5 of the last 6 topics are spam and they have been there for 4 days now. I reported them yesterday but they have not been removed.

I'll volunteer if no one else does, there's not a lot of activity in that forum so it wouldn't be too hard.
242  Local / Skandinavisk / Re: Bitcoin.se - vad vill ni se? on: August 26, 2011, 05:52:48 PM

243  Local / Skandinavisk / Re: Bitcoin.se - vad vill ni se? on: August 26, 2011, 05:45:53 PM

Anything that does not have the words "bit" or "coin" in it would stand out.  Tongue
245  Local / Skandinavisk / Bitcoin.se - vad vill ni se? on: August 25, 2011, 05:09:31 PM

246  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: August 25, 2011, 04:56:19 PM
An opinion piece by Rick Falkvinge in Swedish technology and IT newspaper "Ny Teknik". Has quite a lot of readers, 135 comments on that article so far.

(It's in swedish, could probably be translated using Google Translate with decent results)
247  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] BitcoinPoster.com (free ad space for first 25 thread replies) on: August 24, 2011, 05:15:42 AM
This is like the third site of this type: http://bitcointalk.org/?topic=7559.0

Oops, I was not aware of that, thanks. The "million bitcoin homepage" seems to be a different concept though, where you have to keep paying to hold on to your pixels. The BitPixel page is expensive (10BTC/block) but you get to be part of a lottery when (if?) all pixels are sold, doesn't seem very likely that that will happen anytime soon though. The BitPixel site has a cheaper "BitWall" page, but then you're not on the front page.

So...I'll leave my site up for a while at least to see if it catches any interest.
248  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] BitcoinPoster.com (free ad space for first 25 thread replies) on: August 23, 2011, 07:14:12 PM
Ill take that offer.
Email send

Grouver picked blocks #1 and #2. Others who want free blocks, just write what blocks you want in this thread, no need to send an e-mail. I will PM instructions to those who reply in this thread.
249  Bitcoin / Project Development / [ANNOUNCE] BitcoinPoster.com (free ad space for first 25 thread replies) on: August 23, 2011, 05:11:00 PM
Bitcoin Poster is a site similar to the well known million dollar homepage but with the purpose of promoting Bitcoin. Pixels can only be bought using bitcoins and links must point to something related to bitcoin (this could be an exchange, a blog, an information site, a merchant accepting bitcoin, a news article, or even your own forum profile page). Pixels are 1 bitcent/pixel and are bought in blocks of 10x10 pixels (1 BTC/block).

The first 25 people to respond to this post with two block numbers will get those two blocks (200 pixels) for free. That includes an image, a link and a mouseover text (max 50 characters). Forum accounts created today (or later) are not eligible.

For buying additional pixels simply send an e-mail to bitcoinposter@gmail.com with the subject "Order" and information on what blocks you want to buy. Check out the site for terms and conditions.

Welcome!

I wouldn't trust Google when it comes to language. Have you ever tried Google Translate?  Cheesy

Hey, let's do that!

"Vires in Numeris" -> "Strength in Numbers"
"Vis in Numeris" -> "Do you want in Numbers"
"vis in numeris" -> "to do in the numbers"

Pick your choice.

251  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redeem Private Key Idea on: August 16, 2011, 08:09:13 PM
We're working on exactly this, and it should be available sometime next week on the Bitbills website.

Great to hear, thanks!

Could you please make it possible for us non-miners to view the result of the poll?
253  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin URL scheme: have any proposals been adapted? on: August 10, 2011, 04:04:56 PM
It should be desktop environment specific, nothing to do with the browser:
Thanks. But I think I'll keep it at explicit drag&drop. Having the browser being able to send commands to the bitcoin client without user intervention is just a too big a potential security hole.

I suggest that you use a confirmation box in the client before executing whatever the link is trying to do. After all it's much more intuitive to click links than to drag them.
254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What kind of Bitcoin program and related site would you find useful? on: August 10, 2011, 06:00:06 AM
I want a site where I can "redeem" a private key. See this thread.
255  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redeem Private Key Idea on: August 09, 2011, 11:04:59 AM
Does anybody know if this has been implemented anywhere yet? I'll gladly send a donation to the person who puts up a web site like this.
256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Enough with the online wallets on: August 06, 2011, 03:54:47 PM
Banks are insured and regulated, online wallets are not. Would you take out your wallet or purse and hand it to a stranger gambling at a casino simply because you did not want to carry it around?

It's not just that banks are regulated that makes people trust them. People trust Google (e.g. Gmail) or Microsoft (e.g. Hotmail) with personal secrets, stuff that is more important than thousands of dollars. They do this because the service is convenient to use and because they are pretty damn sure that Google or Microsoft won't give away their secrets to anyone else.

Really, everyone use webmail instead of installed mail programs now. For most people online wallets will be the natural way to use Bitcoin in the future, we just need some reputable people running them. The recent scandals have been hobby projects who grew too quickly.
257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bug Policy --- Admins need to enforce this on: August 03, 2011, 03:48:36 PM
i don't care, about the other users

This is where you differ from most people in this thread. End thread?
258  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bug Policy --- Admins need to enforce this on: August 03, 2011, 03:02:10 PM
see? wikipedia disagree with you.

Not really. Here's some more text from that wikipedia page (also, note that BTCrow wrote "ethical full-disclosure"):

Quote
Even among those who believe in disclosure there are differing policies about when, to whom, and how much to disclose.
Some believe that in the absence of any public exploits for the problem, full and public disclosure should be preceded by disclosure of the vulnerability to the vendors or authors of the system. This private advance disclosure allows the vendor time to produce a fix or workaround. This philosophy is sometimes called responsible disclosure.
259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks are fundamentally unnecessary and actually dangerous for bitcoin on: August 02, 2011, 03:58:31 PM
Every loan creates money. If you have a problem with money creation, you have a problem with lending.

If I borrow money to buy a house, the money I borrowed is still in circulation because I gave it to the person who sold me the house. However, now there is an IOU in circulation as well -- the future money I will earn to pay that mortgage is now already in circulation.

I agree that IOU's are created but not necessarily money created.

Whether those IOU's are money or not is just a matter of definition. In the real world we often see IOU's as money. Take as an example the balance on your bank account. This is just a statement that the bank owes you X dollars (i.e. an IOU), yet we refer to it as money, and we use it as money (when we transfer money to a friend using the same bank).

People often confuse the "IOU-money" that the bank creates with the "central bank money" that they owe you.
260  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks are fundamentally unnecessary and actually dangerous for bitcoin on: August 02, 2011, 07:08:02 AM
Banks originated as goldsmiths who stored people's gold and gave out paper certificates representing the quantity of gold that was stored. This was a valuable service, because storing gold was hard, and paying people with gold was hard. Bitcoins are very different. Storing them is in principle easy, especially if you have a bitcoin-only device as I advocated here, and paying people with them is easy. All of the reasons for putting your gold in the bank are thus irrelevant for bitcoins.

First of all, to store bitcoins safely you need to educate yourself on how to do it. This takes a lot of effort for people who aren't tech-savvy so there is obviously a need for companies providing this service (safe storage).

Second, banks today aren't primarily about safe storage. You lend your money to the bank. They pay you some interest because they can use the money to earn more money (e.g. by lending it to someone else at a higher interest). This service makes just as much sense with Bitcoin as with central bank money and will naturally also exist in a Bitcoin economy.

Mods: Move this to Economics?
