241  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 10, 2015, 09:10:53 PM
Back in the early days, some of the smartest people in the world have been hanging around here. They were posting tech stuff, chatting about the fiat economy and politics, even trying to predict if a specific pattern was responsible for the USD/BTC price. But then; MtGox arrived. Then the trolls followed. And my ignore list must now contain more than 50 persons. Tongue

And yet this still seems to be the best thread in this whole forum.

Recall that, many months ago, about half of the postings on bitcointalk.org were about altcoins.  I am too lazy now to redo that statistic, but, by eyeball, the altcoins still seem to take a large fraction.

Many months ago most of the alt coin posts were mostly addresses for giveaways, until giveaways were banned. After that the alt coin announcements section seemed the most popular, with countless new alt coins being announced each week. Nowadays new coin launches have dried up leaving this as one of the most popular threads,

I sent you my address in a pm because we are not allowed to post addresses for giveaways here.

Giveaways are banned here. There is a link to a thread about it stickied at the top of this forum section.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=780979.0

Most giveaway threads are no longer allowed in the Alternate cryptocurrencies sections. From now on, posting or replying to such threads could result in being banned. Existing threads will be locked.

Specifically, you are not allowed to give people any incentive to post insubstantial posts in your threads. You can't offer to pay people who post their addresses, usernames, etc. You can do giveaways off-site and link to the giveaway page in a thread, but you can't give people any bonus for replying to your thread.

Similar threads are already restricted to Games and Rounds in the non-altcoin sections, but the giveaway-related post volume is so high in the altcoin sections that I've decided to just ban them entirely here.

243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [SKY] Skycoin Launch Announcement on: February 10, 2015, 05:46:00 PM
What percentage will be given away during the coin giveaway for alpha testing? When will the alpha testing take place and how can we participate in it? Will there be restrictions on who can participate?

...

Coin Distribution:

- There is no mining.
- All coins are created in genesis block.
- The coins will be distributed in a fair, open process
- There will be a coin giveaway for alpha testing
- No matter what distribution strategy is chosen, we expect that some people will whine.

244  Economy / Speculation / Re: How long before Bitcoin goes under $200 on: February 10, 2015, 05:00:10 PM
Whenever the next feds auction is. They said Q1 and announce it a few weeks beforehand. The price usually goes down on the day of the announcement but crashes heavily when the auction winners start dumping their coins. I would guess before the end of Q1.
245  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Open-Source faucets ? on: February 10, 2015, 12:31:06 AM
Hi,

I was wondering what are the most known and best Open source faucets out there . I know about Microwallet and Faucet box is there is others that I don't know about please ? btw , is creating faucets profitable or not ? I mean can I earn money from it or I will be just wasting my money on host and BTC and don't earn anything Shocked Any answer is highly appreciated
~ Madness

It depends how you monetize them. Some devs offer bounties for setting up faucets. If you are a dev or miner yourself you can use a faucet to promote your coin. Sometimes you see Google ads on faucet pages that pay for each visitor.
246  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [DGC] Digitalcoin speculation on: February 10, 2015, 12:03:12 AM
This time last year there were far less alts and digital coin was close to the top of the pile. It's one of the older alts created by proper devs who could code. Some of the new coins are created by coingen and stop working after a few months. Digital coin should be worth a lot more and I think that as time goes by it will rise to the top of the pile again.
247  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 09, 2015, 11:07:27 AM
Correction: the "4.1 billion USD" for the GBL scam seems to be a newspaper error.  Other sources say "4.1 million",  with is of course much more plausible.
is this for the exchange in HK that apparently stole funds and goxxed users ?

It was not an exchange. It was a good ol Ponzi scheme using a Bitcoin facade to lure suckers in.

This is the first article about it that I have found in English. It's still very vague about what the facts actually are. It's not clear exactly how much money has gone missing yet, but it says some customers are taking action on Wednesday. Maybe we will find out more concrete facts by then.

248  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: MtGox losses and tax deductions on: February 09, 2015, 03:15:53 AM
There is a thread discussing this here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=485260.0

The OP seems to know what he is talking about and had this to say about Gox and filing tax returns.

Anyway, worth noting that if it turns out that we never get the coins back from MtGox, you will be able to report them as a loss next year, i.e when you file your 2014 taxes in 2015. However, the catch is that you need to be able to show the cost basis, and probably any other documentary evidence in case you are audited. This means you needed to have downloaded your trade history from MtGox.

It may be that they come back online, or in their Gox rebranding that they will give you access. I suggest you grab it as soon as you can if you have not already done so.

If you do lose coins, you can claim a loss for their cost basis only. So if you had bought 1 BTC in April 2013 for $100 and it's now gone, you can only claim $100.

The mycoin.hk thing will likely have little effect on the market because, as I understand it,  it's an obvious fiat ponzi scheme that merely used bitcoin as part of the ruse. Ponzis are already illegal so no further legislation needed.

I generally agree, except that there are claims that mycoin.hk operated also an exchange that scammed their clients too.  So there may be some consequences for other exchanges.

Did mycoin run its own exchange or operate in association with another?  BFX is located in Hong Kong, right?

I'm not certain but  their website suggests they ran their own exchange, an online wallet service, a cloud mining service, and various entertainment services. This is what Google translate came up with from their about us page. Right now it's difficult to get any clear information, just stuff badly translated through Google.

250  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitStamp - Bank Blocks USD Deposits on: February 09, 2015, 02:39:05 AM
If solvency is your concern I would pay more attention to the withdraw side.

we will see many withdrawals from Bitstamp on Monday...
Not true.  People get fucked, then they get fucked again.  It is like lambs going to slaughter.  They never learn.  Nearly everyone will be sitting there thinking: 'this time, everything will be OK  -  right?'  And the next moment all their money is gone.  Don't you remember how many warnings there were for Gox?  Nobody moved.
Yes, some did move from Gox.  Others moved with the early warning signs.

Regarding Bitstamp, there are two things worth mulling over.

A.  Move coins out.  Never hold coins in an exchange.
B.  Move CURRENCY out.  It does not matter if it is into USD.  Move it out into Euros or whatever is convenient.

I am not connecting the dots from the DWOLLA-GOX freeze of $5M to Gox's downfall.  It may have been a factor, but bank reluctance to deal with Gox wasn't the reason Gox had so much money and coin vanish.

That bank reluctance may have helped the Goxing from being FAR WORSE.

I read some stories suggesting Gox had money in bank accounts that "disappeared" like a load of bitcoins "disappeared". It was a credible story that Gox might have been hacked and had bitcoins stolen, but I do not consider it very credible that a hacker could have disappeared money out of their bank account. There is a clear money trail from bank account withdrawals. Gox sounds like an inside job to me.

Perhaps Gox's bank noticed financial irregularities from the inside job and refused to do business because of them.
251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for a new DEV for ADT Androids Tokens v2.0 [[[ TAKEOVER]]] on: February 09, 2015, 02:27:36 AM
I kept all of my coins on cryptsy luckily. Had about 38mil ADT. over the past few months ive just slowly sold of more and more. Finally glad to be rid of all my ADT and not have to worry about this headache any longer.

I had a load of coins on Cryptsy that just kept dropping in value like ADT. Eventually I just dumped them all and I'm still in two minds if it was a wise decision. Maybe if bitcoin starts going up ADT might too. On the other hand if bitcoin keeps crashing I expect ADT will crash harder.
252  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC-E Trollbox - Costly to Troll on: February 09, 2015, 02:19:57 AM
I think it's $100? I have some random coins and it says i need 81 more USD.

Has it always been like that? Was it ever free?

Yes. It used to be free. I think the money requirement came in a year or so ago. You had to have a minimum balance on there to post but I don't think it was anywhere near that level.

It used to be free until the insane rise in price and popularity of bitcoin.
It was impossible to read messages at the rate they were written and dev decided to put a limit for having ability to chat there.
But this is a good thing, because there were also alot of link spamming and virus spreading which led to many account users to loose their funds.
Noone is going to risk their balance now on a off chance to infect someone, i think..

How come Poloniex does not have the same trollbox spam problem? Is it because it's moderated better by full time staff? It's free to use but the rules seem fairly strict, no swearing, etc. I have witnessed a few people given a temporary ban just for swearing.
253  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Node App for Android on: February 08, 2015, 10:56:05 PM
If you ever do this please don't let others connect to your node over port 8333. You'd be doing a disservice to the overall performance of the network.

Is it pointless running a node on Android? This reddit thread says nodes without port port 8333 open cannot make connections with nodes joining the network or looking for more connections.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1scd4z/im_running_a_full_node_and_so_should_you/cdw3lrh?context=3

Quoting a post on the reddit thread.

Having a maximum of 8 connections corresponds to bitcoin not being set up to listen to the outside world on port 8333, usually due to a router or firewall. If a node is not listening for connections, then it can only connect to existing nodes that have their port open. Nodes without their port open cannot make connections with nodes joining the network or looking for more connections. By running a node without the port open, you are essentially taking resources from the network but not giving anything back yourself.
254  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 08, 2015, 10:44:15 PM
Most stolen coins have already been sold. Why do you think the price has gone down for over a year?

money is missing, not coins.

It sounds like coins might be missing in addition to money. There is a mycoin thread in the Chinese section here that says they were limiting what people could withdraw in December last year. The Google translated version is at this link. The translation is terrible, but it sounds like people could only withdraw a small amount of their total bitcoins on the site.

Bitcoins can withdraw cash at the same time the number refers to sell to buy 50% BTC number, for example: buy 3 BTC, sell a BTC, currently available number of withdrawals 0.5 BTC

Itīs official.

http://www.chinatimes.com/realtimenews/20150208002335-260410

Google translate::

"Hong Kong, " Wen Wei Po" reported bitcoin (bitcoin) again to Hong Kong investors ' loss of hand bad feet " : Hong Kong, a Bitcoin payment platform has suddenly closed down , estimated at nearly 3000 Bitcoin investors may lose everything at any time .

It is understood that when a group of Hong Kong investors in Bitcoin trading platform related office visits , found that have been left vacant , suspected of fraud and pyramid selling , the estimated total amount of all " victims ' losses at any time up to three billion Hong Kong dollars . Today they will collectively Police...."

Thanks to Jorge for breaking the news. Wait until this hits the news worldwide on monday, which will probably trigger the crash to sub 100. We would go there anyways, but a good news story will probably add more momentum and preserves us from more failed pumps and boring sideways action before the crash.

So why aren't the Chinese exchanges dumping like crazy?
3 billion yuan = 2.17 million btc at the current price. 3000 investors means the average investor had 725 btc each Huh

For a start the Chinese do not wake up until four or five hours from now. I'm also waiting to read an English version of the story because Google translated versions aren't exactly reliable.

The market hasnt moved one bit in hours so im not buying it as important news, it probably happened but not that much of a big deal.

I had never heard of them until now, but I don't usually check out the Chinese exchanges. I put their site through Google translate and it appears to be a combination of exchange, cloud mining, online wallet, games, etc.

Here is an msn page about it, but it's lost much through Google translation, and the original source is a Hong Kong website. I cannot find any decent pages about it in English yet.
