Wish I could buy one of these but as a poor university student I definitely can't. My tuition of $4,800 could definitely buy some mining power.. Lol

If you live in a dorm with "FREE" electricity, you might be able to work a deal with someone. You host their miners and you get a cut of the earnings.  Grin

That'd be a good idea.. wish I knew someone, lol!
I'd host it for free even, I don't care!

You could always pick up an older miner from eBay or any of the forums. Since your power is free, efficiency is not that important.

When my son goes back to school in August, I'm sending him my S1's to run for me in his dorm room.

I am adding a pair of s-3's  to the doc h team.  seems to be really nice gear so far.

Stock clock is freq 218  gives me 440 gh

I under clocked to freq 212  gives me 426 gh  for 1 machine   watts used with an evga 1300 psu are  640 for the 2 machines with a total gh of around 840

I also will be adding a pair of S3's next week.

I've done a cursory look through the thread and on google and can't find any reliable information about batch 4.  Does such information exist?  As in, has batch 4 been announced?  Is it in the works?  Any news yet?

I don't think you will see anything on Batch 4 for a while. They are still struggling to ship Batch 1.
247  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 18, 2014, 06:50:26 PM
hope they deliver batch 2 units tomorrow Cry

Don't hold your breath.

They still haven't shipped all of Batch 1 yet.

Bitcoin Miner Problems #257: Needing to take a crap and a shower, but can't, because you don't want to miss the doorbell, and not signing for the delivery.
Redneck engineering has fixed that for you - toilet on the front porch.

Moving around trying to always be at the luckiest pool doesn't work. You can't move to a luckier pool when our luck is down, and back here when our luck is up.

Why?

Because you don't know how lucky a pool will be in the future. You don't know the future.

Crystal balls don't work. Tarot cards don't work. Voodoo doesn't work. Predicting today's luck based on yesterday's luck doesn't work. Nothing works. It's all superstition. The reality is that you can't tell the future.

Anyone get their 7.7% refund yet?

Nope and these miners are not running anywhere near -7.7%..  more like -14%

Hopefully there is a FW update soon.

Can't OC to 225mhz as well?

225mhz was not very stable ton of HW errors

250mhz is a mixed bag as well, I have one that has low HW errors another with really high #'s. MAX sustained speed @ Miner = 470GH/s @ Pool = 464GH/s

Both of the above settings required 4 PCI-e connections to be "stable".

GOOD NEWS...  250mhz - 470GH/s - 358W

what psu did you use to get that set of numbers? it comes to .76 watts a gh!

I have a single S3 powered by the enermax 1000w that I took out of the S2. Using 4 PCI-e connections Kill-a-watt reads 357W

good news. I had one of the enermaxes and the seasonic plats are better for power savings

i have some plat 750 seasonics .  i am thinking maybe 340 watts for 470gh  that would be  .72 watts at the plug!

Based on these numbers I may be able to run 4 S3's on an Enermax 1500

Yo Doc!  I just found this:

https://github.com/cdhowie/Bitcoin-mining-proxy

Allows you to have multiple blahs on a thingy.  By the looks of it you can have a bunch of miners on it, and then point it where you wish.   You have the worker on this server, and can point each worker at a different pool if need be.

Which would help with this luck issue.

IMO, it's time to drop the whole "luck" discussion.

We solved 5 BTClocks in less than 2 days.

Our luck looks just fine.

Not trying to be snarky, but nothing is preventing you from going to another pool if you are not happy with BitMinter.

254  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 17, 2014, 08:38:35 PM
where do they sell power supplies like that? Is it dell? did it come with that board also? Smiley

Yes it is a Dell server PSU 750w here is who makes and sales the boards. There was a group buy going on for them I just bought mine direct. You can get the board or the whole setup.

http://www.gekkoscience.com/products/D750_supply_breakout_board.html

They are loud. Awesome PSU's, just loud as hell. GF won't let me have them in the house anymore. Something about "I can't hear myself think over those damn things!!" Thinking isn't her best attribute.  Wink

Time for a new GF Grin
255  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 17, 2014, 08:13:30 PM
Hello everyone,

When we were doing the first mass production, we found that not all of the S3’s DC/DC module could be stable enough to support the 478GH/s speed. After long time testing, all of the S3 run stably at 441GH/s, which however is 7.7% less than the 478GH/s we have announced.

So we decide the final specification of ANTMINER S3 here:

Hash Rate: 441 GH/s or more
Power Consumption: about 340 Watt at the wall when running at 441GH/s
Power Efficiency: 0.77 J/GH on wall
Power Supply: 12V DC
Size:  331 mm x 137 mm x 160 mm
Fans: Two 14038 fans mounted on both front and back ends.
Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 35 °C
Complied with: FCC / CE
Network Connection: Ethernet

Many of the customers may be lucky to find that their S3 can be overclocked to 478GH/s.

We apologize for this incident. We offer two options for customers:

1)   10.0% worth of coupon for the B1~B3 customers. This is the default option. (10% based on what you have paid for the B1~B3)
2)   7.7% worth of refund. We will release a function on our official website for application of this option. If you have bought from our resellers, please contact them and provide your Bitcoin address.

Shipping schedule updated:

Batch 1: The shipping will be finished in 14th and 17th.
Batch 2: It will be shipping out between 18th and 19th.
Batch 3: It will be shipping out between 19th and 22nd.

Well, the time for Batch 1 shipping has come and went and my Batch 1 order has yet to ship. I hope that Bitmain does the honorable thing and provide refunds for those of us that bought Batch 1, but are receiving miners that are going out with Batch 2. I would be happy with the difference in Batch1 & Batch 2 prices. That only seems fair.

Yes they are static from the factory at 192.168.1.99
NO DHCP enabled.

That's the same as the S1's.

I wish everyone would stop talking about how great their S3's are. I'm still waiting for my Batch 1 order to ship.  Tongue
You are all making me jealous

Past luck doesn't affect future luck.

This is very important to understand. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambler%27s_fallacy

You can't switch to a luckier pool, and switch back when luck returns. That's not how luck works.

There is no such thing as pool X having good luck right now. There is only: pool X had good luck the last few hours, but noone knows what luck they will have in the next hours.

If you can tell what luck someone is going to have in the future then by definition we are not talking about luck but something else.

I would have to agree here.  It does seem that the pool's luck is spotty at best.
2 days to make a block (sometimes) are seemingly way too long.
The payouts are decent, but the time between them are discouraging.

The last few days we had some bad luck. But the last month overall was lucky. You have to expect a few unlucky days. Not all days can be lucky. "I'm not lucky every day" does not mean the same as "I'm unlucky every day". Even if it may feel that way sometimes.

Yes, the payouts have been good, and that's probably the most important thing to a miner.

I understand it's frustrating when the unlucky blocks take a long time though. We'll need to increase the hashpower to make them pass faster.

I agree with the Doctor, but my point about 2 bad months still stands.  A bad day or 2 can be ignored, but a bad month or 2 is not exactly fun.

What is not fun is a 7.8% block that is stale ! :-)

For the rest, i don't see luck problem here. People need to stop to press the panic button when we hit a less lucky streak (we solved 6 block in 25 hours just like 2 weeks ago). If you invest in miners, you're taking a lot of risk and if you cannot handle the fact that luck is part of the risk in your investment, you might have do something wrong in your thinking.

I did invest in miner, knowing that i might have NOTHING in 6 month (bitcoin crash, hash rate explode, someone hack the bitcoin ?? name it you got it.)

the "I need more stable income to pay my electricity" bills is complete no-sens to me.

The way I see it, my electricity bills is an investment in the BTC whatever the luck we have.

Just my 2 cents

I agree totally.

I look at mining as a lottery ticket or going to a casino.

The money I have invested in mining hardware is money that I can afford to lose. Would I be disappointed if I don't break even? Sure. Would I get upset? No. Right now my goal is to make enough to pay for the electricity used to mine.

I started with a couple of stick miners and used my mined BTC to buy some Jally's. The BTC I mined using the Jally's paid for some Chili's. Which paid for some S1's. Which are paying for the S3's I have ordered. All along I have been mining on Bitminter and doing better than breaking even.

I'm sticking with the good doctor, he has done good by me.
