241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to managing the passwords, private keys, opinions/best practices on: January 30, 2018, 11:57:54 AM
I prefer writing the private key down on a piece of paper, instead of printing. Printing requires you to either transfer the data by WiFi or USB, for both you're not sure whether it will save anything on the memory, as it could then later by stolen trough the same communication protocol. I'm extra cautious because I use a shared printer, so a lot of devices get connected to the printer which could possibly be compromised. Handwritten paper backups are also the way I save my passwords, where I use a different one for every occasion. I use manually random generated passwords for accounts that have a lot of value for me, the dice works very good for this purpose.
242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Phone scam selling Bitcoin on: January 29, 2018, 11:20:18 PM
That is really weird, do you know a service related to Bitcoin where you gave your phone number?
As I'm really wondering if this scam is targeted to the Bitcoin community or just random.

Probably isn't even a company related to Bitcoin as I for one don't know a single website/exchange which requires a phone number and if they do then they are likely selling the data on or have been compromised. It could be other websites/services selling the number on and not specifically targeted at people already invested in Bitcoin.
Lot of exchanges are asking for phone number. Many of them are using it to send 2FA SMS messages. But offcourse, it's not likely that phone number was leaked from exchange.
It's indeed not likely that an exchange leaks your phone number but you still have to be aware of where you enter it. Especially if you use it for services like 2fa, because recently I see a lot of cases where someone calls the victims's phone provider pretending to be him, to get access to exchanges or something of that sort.

okay thanks a lot everyone I will try contact there support and see what they say if they come out with bull I will be back and give more info sorry just new to the game but u see the transaction has gone through I take it ?
It's your own decision, we don't force you to do it. The solution is the private key, with that you can access your BCH as the transaction already got through. I hope for you that the support will respond to your ticket.
That post doesn't really make sense? Don't force him to do what?

He didn't want to name the service he sent the funds to. I meant to say that I don't for him to name the service, it just makes things easier. For example if he used a service like blockchain.info, then he is capable of recovering it himself.

You're right, it might actually be easier to scam people that don't really know how Bitcoin works. But I think there are sites that require a phone number, for example webshops. In a lot of webshops where I pay with fiat, it requires you to register using a phone number. Maybe there are Bitcoin webshops that do the same thing? Also some web-wallets use 2fa using sms code instead of an app, in which they also safe your number in a database.

246  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dark Net users as the new Threat? on: January 29, 2018, 10:42:17 PM
Darkweb marketplaces can only be accessed through Tor Onion protocol, here traffic is encrypted routed through a series of nodes. I think it's not as easy as described by you to obtain an IP address behind Tor, unless you have javascript turned on. But yes, the amount of bitcoin owners that is going to be targeted for robbery is going to grow in the near future, not only society evolves, criminals do too.

If it's a service then it's most likely an exchange or something of that sort were you can't access the private key. In most cases there is no way to recover the coins by yourself, only with help from the service. Also if you want an accurate answer then you should name of the service, it can't hurt because you're not actually giving away essential details to your specific wallet/account.
249  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is mining coming to an end? on: January 29, 2018, 10:19:51 PM
I think in an ideal world there is only one proof of work system needed, others can be build upon that. It doesn't have to be necessary build on it, but it can also be a reference of validation like komodo does with delayed proof of work. Cryptocurrencies without proof of work is not an option, as for now. I don't see DAG as a concurrent because it hasn't shown to be immune for 33% attacks.
250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin replace credit? on: January 29, 2018, 09:56:33 PM
Andreas Antonopoulos has a really nice explanation on why this isn't really that bad. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T0OUIW89II
251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if, we advertise bitcoin on T.V.? on: January 29, 2018, 09:33:42 PM
I think Bitcoin is getting enough attention in the media, but not really the kind of attention I hoped for. The public that is getting Bitcoin's attention is full of people that only come for profit. It's not way Bitcoin was intended and does make it impossible for people that came for to use it that way. Although now developers can earn enough to take it as a full job, which is favorable for the development of Bitcoin.

OK, so only big timers in here. So, I feel a little intimidated here, but here it goes. I can imagine you all already earned your stripes and I am considered to be a 'new kid on the block'. But I have a Signature Campaign accepted just recently and just like I do at work, I deliver. This whole new system with merit integrated has a lot of benefits, I must agree! On the other hand it also feels slightly dishonest.. I probably will be a Sr Member in around 2-3 years Smiley Besides that, it's a Monopoly right now. Heroes and Legendaries own the hotels and us little ones will never win the game anymore.. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. You feel the nasty taste it gives the people from the bottom and the supporting shouts from the top of the foodchain. It's a model we probably have to get used to now. We live, we learn, we adapt :p

Hm I don't get it haha.
The clue of the joke is the fluctuating value of Bitcoin.
254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is creating money out of thin air on: January 29, 2018, 08:47:18 PM
What really is the difference with fiat? Fiat currency is essentially just an agreement between us and the central that it can be used as a means to pay for services and goods. This is actually the same with Bitcoin, we just recognize value to it and decide it can be used as a payment method. The big difference that makes me think this statement applies more for fiat is that central banks can really print more money, thus bring more units in circulation. Bitcoin has a fixed supply, so it can't create new units out of thin air.
255  Local / Nederlands (Dutch) / Re: is een tweedehands bitcoin hardware wallet veilig? on: January 29, 2018, 08:37:18 PM

256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How does Segwit reduce transaction fees? on: January 29, 2018, 08:21:56 PM
Transactions need less space on the blockchain when SegWit is used. That means miners can take more transactions in a block, so compared to legacy transactions it's much more efficient. The result is lower fees than if you would use legacy transactions, because the fee is shared over more transactions than without SegWit.
257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Surprised fact about Bitcoin on: January 29, 2018, 10:35:37 AM
It's really interesting that an open-source project is capable of reaching this market value, in my eyes totally justified. Besides Unix, it's one of the most innovating open-source projects that exist today. I'm pretty sure that blockchain technology is going to be an important aspect of the current century, if it isn't already. I'm wondering what the value will be in 10 years, will it outreach Microsoft?
258  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How safe a ledger is? on: January 29, 2018, 10:22:33 AM
Looking at the title I thought you were referring to the safety of the distributed ledger (blockchain) but you actually mean the hardware wallet. I think it's important to check the authenticity of the hardware wallet that you're buying, just like you do when you download a software wallet where you verify the signature. To ensure at least some authenticity, please buy it from the official website. It's basically the same as if you download the software wallet from the official website instead of a third party. I don't own a hardware wallet myself, but I believe I read somewhere that the the ledger does an authenticity test, using public key cryptography on the chrome application. That's quite bulletproof as I haven't heard of an exploit yet. The product also comes with a seal on the package, this can also prove some authenticity. But personally I still prefer an air-gapped machine, running wallet software that's build from source. It's cheaper and proves much more authenticity.
