I received a phone call today from the UK number 020 7616 1383. I didn't answer as I was driving at the time.
I've checked the number through Google, and several sites report it as a financial services scam site that is attempting to sell Bitcoin.
Has anybody else had these types of call? I'm wondering how they got my number as well.

There's another thread with a user with the same thing happening on his phone. Someone is data mining.

That is really weird, do you know a service related to Bitcoin where you gave your phone number?
As I'm really wondering if this scam is targeted to the Bitcoin community or just random.

There are similar scams in France, people don't understand very well Bitcoin but they know it is a thing. Thus scam compagnies benefit from the ignorance of the people, especially seniors who have funds to invest.

Probably isn't even a company related to Bitcoin as I for one don't know a single website/exchange which requires a phone number and if they do then they are likely selling the data on or have been compromised. It could be other websites/services selling the number on and not specifically targeted at people already invested in Bitcoin.

You're right, it might actually be easier to scam people that don't really know how Bitcoin works. But I think there are sites that require a phone number, for example webshops. In a lot of webshops where I pay with fiat, it requires you to register using a phone number. Maybe there are Bitcoin webshops that do the same thing? Also some web-wallets use 2fa using sms code instead of an app, in which they also safe your number in a database.

The company most likely bought a database of crypto-related contacts.

Social engineers typically data mine this, well, data by decoupling websites that are designed to give you something for free. This is why I don’t participate in airdrops that require a lot of information, as I know that my data will uncoubtedly end up for sale on the black market.

Other methods of data mining include sites that require registration, such as faucets, and I think the biggest culprits are sites that are designed to “give something away” for “free”. Like raffles where you have to enter your information to be eligible.

My best advice to people that want to sign up on these sites? First of all, avoid sites that require you to enter your mobile number. Once you’re on a list like that, you’re screwed. Secondly, create a fake email address or one that is specifically used as a “throwaway”, if you will, that you can use to sign up on these sites.

I never got similar calls. And if I would get, I wouldn't answer. I usually ignore calls when I see unknown country code in phone number.
How they are getting phone numbers? Probably in same like they get email addresses. Maybe you left your phone number on bad website or or they just bought database of phone numbers. It's also possible that these scammers are just calling to random phone numbers.

Lot of exchanges are asking for phone number. Many of them are using it to send 2FA SMS messages. But offcourse, it's not likely that phone number was leaked from exchange.

It's indeed not likely that an exchange leaks your phone number but you still have to be aware of where you enter it. Especially if you use it for services like 2fa, because recently I see a lot of cases where someone calls the victims's phone provider pretending to be him, to get access to exchanges or something of that sort.

Yeah, I confirm this. My brother received last month a phone from a "supposed" company, asking  him if he is interested to "invest" in Bitcoin with their fancy arguments to tell you how Bitcoin is so profitable bla bla bla
He didn't even know what is Bitcoin until I told him after.

It's the type of phone calls trying to scam people using data mining, you know, like when they call senior people to sell them solar panels at a price 10 times higher lol

I guess so. I'm not a huge fan of using a phone number for authentication though so probably why I forgot that even existed. Even if I was to enter a phone number on an exchange it would likely be a phone just for that purpose.

There's better alternatives out there which were recently discussed over in the the serious discussion section.

You're right, it might actually be easier to scam people that don't really know how Bitcoin works. But I think there are sites that require a phone number, for example webshops. That sucks. They should probably think about changing that, as they'll likely be losing out on sales just because they require a phone number. Especially, relevant in the Bitcoin community as you know how paranoid we all are...

It is usually a try and error scenario, where they purchase a large database of contacts and hope that they can find a victim this is the same as phishing but it is being done with a telephone.

Uh, I don't think simply answering a phone call will automatically allow the caller to steal your personal information and even your cryptocurrency wallets 🤔; unless you yourself voluntarily give it to them.

whew that was scary, i thought bitcoin is anonymous, did you just left your number or even posted it somewhere? maybe you liked a link on facebook that has something to do with bitcoin then that caller saw it and traced where he can contact you, be careful where and what you like. those are phishing sites that take advantage of security vulnerability of facebook just to gather data and randomly dialled your number, there are no such thing as legal callers selling bitcoin. good thing is, we no know how popular bitcoin these days.

We should never give out our information to anyone more so to these random people who are selling bitcoins through phone call. Don't get lured with their promises of high profit if you invest in them. If someone tries to do this to anyone here, I think it is best to post the contact numbers of these scammers to serve as caution for everyone.

Now all walks of life exist telephone fraud, with the group to have their own anti-fraud awareness, information disclosure may be when you contact the bitcoin buyers some information directly related to the found, so the best to be vigilant.
