Strange graph.

Here's a slightly outdated org chart, courtesy of David Allen.

242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The unit poll on: May 29, 2014, 02:42:38 AM
Interesting.  As of the current vote,

There are only 18 votes for using the name "Bit" for 0.000001 BTC
There are 33 votes for any option other than "Bits" (such as Microbitcoin, Microbit, Mike, or Micro).

And yet people for some reason claim that there is a consensus for the word "Bit" to describe 0.000001 BTC, or that the matter is settled.

You could look at the same data and conclude the only terminology that has more agreement than bits = 10^-6 bitcoins are the terms Satoshi and bitcoin for 10^-8 bitcoins and 1 bitcoin, respectively.

Correct.  Bitcoin and Satoshi clearly have majority support with 37 out of 50 voters (74%) and 30 out of 50 voters (60%) respectively.

After that, there are opinions all over the place, with nothing at all gaining majority support.  I'm not sure why anyone would think that there was a consensus for any other name.

I would have thought millibits would have more support. Anyhow, I think bits is better than any other term for microbitcoins and I support the move to a 6.2 format.

You guys should put a TLDR or a conclusion at the end of your posts. I dont think I am the first one to mention it but a lot of us have trouble understand the meaning of all this. What are you hinting at ?

Any real info can be put succinctly. Tuning out for now.
245  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange accidentally sent 512 bitcoins after coding error on: May 27, 2014, 02:22:03 AM
511 BTC? LOL well i guess your rich now.... Grin

Screw that guy, i wouldent give him anything back there is nothing he can do.

Have fun with your $4,333.28  Cheesy

I kinda think we should play nice...I mean, if we don't protect those who are creating and inventing and pushing the limits of what can be done with bitcoins, we all lose...everyone is gonna make a mistake, but if we encourage the clever ones and hassle the dumb ones to do the right thing, we'll all be better off.

I'm glad our clever ones are still working hard and doing useful work to make the Bitcoin network more valuable.
246  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin & Regulations: Lessons From Skype article is a must read on: May 26, 2014, 09:44:58 PM
From the article:" The first companies that connected Skype to the phone network took risks. These partners need clear arguments around why they are safe and why the service they provide is in compliance with the rules."

I'd argue that most Bitcoin companies are really "partners" and they need the regulatory arguments around why they are safe...
247  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Preferred Bitcoin logo[POLL] on: May 25, 2014, 04:10:06 PM
Logo or character? I like the old logo, but there's no character to go with it.
248  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just paid the $100K USD via BTC to become a Platinum Member of TBF. on: May 24, 2014, 11:26:50 PM
Thanks.  I read, among other things:

Quote
Section 3.3(c) Limitations on Voting Rights of Members. Except as otherwise provided for by any Board of Directors resolution, no member shall have the right or be entitled to vote: (i) on a sale, lease, exchange, or other disposition of all or substantially all of the Corporation's assets; (ii) on a merger of the Corporation; (iii) on a dissolution or reorganization of the Corporation; or (iv) on amendments to the Corporation's Articles or Bylaws.
Who in sane mind would join an association that has something like 3.3(c)(iv) in its bylaws?

You seem surprised...why? It's pretty standard. Members don't own the foundation assets. They're not shareholders. Just like people who join the EFF or their local NPR station can't call for and vote on liquidation of it's assets.
249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: pet peeve: when people send bitcoins with NO TX FEE on: May 24, 2014, 09:54:48 PM
I wish miners would just fill blocks...why the artificial scarcity for a few pennies? It'll be a while before tx fees amount to much anyhow, why screw with around with trivial fees _now_?

I currently have my miner set to 500kB blocks. I also told my miner to include up to 196kB of "high priority 0 fee transactions", which is basicly reasonable amount of Bitcoins that have not moved around in a few days.

My miner has two limitations that prevent full 1MB blocks:
  • VDSL connection; only about 5Mbps up. This means that if I send a 1MB block to more than 1 node simultaneously, it will take over a second: possibly increasing the chance of an orphan.
  • I have not upgraded the old CPU yet. Before I can start mining a new block, I have to verify the old one. This can take several seconds. On P2Pool, that means I am going to have a 10% stale rate or so (my mining blade is responsible for the bulk of my stale rate though).

Are you a mining pool operator then? I can see the delay being an issue of propagating a larger solved block to the rest of the network...especially if you upload to another slow node (it's one at a time, just like downloading blocks, right?).

It's a bit ironic, the high compensation for the block reward incentivizes small blocks or large tx fees. I now recall a discussion on the dev list on this. Well, time will change this as block reward decreases.

251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just paid the $100K USD via BTC to become a Platinum Member of TBF. on: May 24, 2014, 09:14:18 PM
I remember reading somewhere that, according to their bylaws, board members had to attend the meetings in person; but that requirement was promptly waived for Mark Karpelès.  Is that correct?  If so, they will probably just change the rules again, no?

You can read bylaws here. https://github.com/pmlaw/The-Bitcoin-Foundation-Legal-Repo/blob/master/Bylaws/Bylaws_of_The_Bitcoin_Foundation.md

If you've taught me one thing, phinn, it's to vet rather than believe. Can you sign a message with the private key or keys used to txfer $100k to the Bitcoin Foundation as well as the transaction?

To be clear, you asking me about my tx or KnC's tx?

Lol...sorry to break it to you, but there's more than one receiving address at the foundation. Each member gets their own address. Go to members.bitcoinfoundation.org, login, get your address and see for yourself.

Can we please be shown the transaction of around 200 btc from KNC miner to the Foundation?

I don't doubt it was made, but the whole point of this thread is that it does not seem to be on the foundation's main btc address. So you don't need to answer 50 question, but just one:

Where is the KNC bitcoin payment to the foundation?

You should ask _them_...it's their private info.

Lol...the policy is no sock puppets. That's hard to implement. We've had "bill gates" and "warrem buffet" join too. What's not hard to implement is mailing a postcard with credentials required to vote. We may do this in the future and drop the voting rights deadline for signing up.

I ran this election Phinn...if you have _any_ questions about it, you can call me. I'll be in Chicago mid June if you'd like to chat over lunch or something. There's nothing to hide here.

wait a tick, so phinn is the only person who gets to hear what you say? he has asked the questions in this thread. why not answer them here? (please)

So, he has asked (in a fairly roundabout way) a couple of good questions. and you dont answer them but just say it was all fair and good. then say call me in june i might answer then, but only for you...

It is not just PG who is interested in the answers, hence the number of replies in this thread.

cheers,
steve

(btw, the postal thing is backward and easily duped - but hey ho, i guess it is not my problem. unfortunately bitcoin has bigger problems than tbf...)

edited to fix formatting.
this post wasnt meant to be demanding or rude, but if you are going to give info out (which you suggested you would) i would appreciate it if we could all hear.

If it were easy to answer 50 questions in a thread to everyone's satisfaction from my iPhone while on call in the hospital, I'd do it.  Far easier on me to have one quick conversation with one trustworthy person.

But the tl;dr is this: nothing interesting or surprising.

We only accept Bitcoin as payment for members dues. Our membership pricing is pegged directly to the market value of Bitcoin, updated on a daily basis. For current membership pricing options, please create an account.

To promote transparency and enforce fair voting procedures, we require a real name and address for all members. Please note that member dues paid to records that do not include a real name and mailable address will not be refunded.

For shits and giggles I wanted to see if I could sign up via using a fake name, address, and a zip code that doesn't even match the state I claimed to live in, let alone have a named street in an also made up city not located in said state. (DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, AND TRY IT YOURSELF)

Results: No problem whatsoever, whereupon I was greeted with the following:

Payment Due

Thank you for signing up to become a member of the Bitcoin Foundation. Your membership will become active as soon as we receive payment of the amount shown at the Bitcoin address listed below. We will send you an email to let you know we have confirmed your payment and your membership is active.

Membership   Price   Address
Annual   0.05 BTC   1Bs4fgUvdywU19J1DT6XmAT6CN2MuAwhWE (https://blockchain.info/address/1Bs4fgUvdywU19J1DT6XmAT6CN2MuAwhWE)

If you would like to change the membership type you’ve requested before making payment, please use the "Edit" button above.

The newly created bitcoin wallet address (0 tx) was generated on TBF's end, and not via some service provided, i.e. BitPay.

Surely, The Bitcoin Foundation isn't using their efforts as some sort of money laundering scheme as some have suggested, are they? With Brock Pierce at the helm, I'm sure if such were the case, the practice WILL be put a stop to.  Roll Eyes

Your membership funds our efforts to standardize, protect and promote Bitcoin.

Industry members must join by April 15, 2014 to be eligible to vote on the two industry board seats up for election in April 2014. Any industry member with a valid industry membership may nominate an individual to run in the election up to the April 7, 2014 nomination deadline. Because both board seats are industry board seats, only industry members are eligible to nominate individuals for and vote in the April 2014 election.

We offer two membership options for individuals, annual and lifetime, as well as three membership tiers for industry: silver, gold, and platinum. All memberships include one vote in their membership class and access to our member forums where you’ll be able to provide input on foundation initiatives, join a committee, or volunteer. Industry memberships include additional benefits outlined here.

If you would prefer to support the Bitcoin Foundation without joining as a member, you can do so by donating to the address listed on our donate page, but note that donors do not receive member voting rights or other benefits.

Now that I, too, am a Platinum Member of The Bitcoin Foundation, I'm really going to start stirring up some shit.

Quick aside: davout, I'm still waiting for you to clarify my bitcoin address so that can return my stolen 1,132 BTC currently residing in one of your bitcoin wallets.

If you've taught me one thing, phinn, it's to vet rather than believe. Can you sign a message with the private key or keys used to txfer $100k to the Bitcoin Foundation as well as the transaction?

The accumulated wisdom is that the first wave of adopters were technoidealists...dreamers with computers skills so to speak.

NeXT wave was the "dude, I can buy drugs with this!" wave. Then the speculators came in with the entrepreneurs...now with Bitpay, coinbase, and circle, we are getting ready to get regular folks on board.

I look forward to chatting with you on Saturday OP.

You mean that racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic goat-fucking, thinks-his-shit-doesn't-stink guy? Somebody should vet his fucking ass to see who the fuck is paying him to destroy so many lives. I don't believe for one fucking minute that he really did have 1000 bitcoins stolen by whatever that site is called. He's the cancer around here, marc my words.

I apologize for the cussing, but I honestly can't stand the prick.

New around here? You don't know the detective very well. Perhaps you mistake his humor?

Don't forget, we are all real people. Real people you could grab a bite to eat with or chat on the phone to. Do you normally slander acquaintances in real life, or just on the internet?

Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation.
I wonder who is slandering whom?

It's worst than you think! The guy slandering me, AL, was really me, one of my known alts on this forum, of which the others have all been declared, with none cloaked.

I didn't want the ruse to go too long, hence ending it now, showing that nobody's doing any vetting on these characters but me, and of late, now a handful of others, of which I desire to thank.

There is some amazing shady shit going on behind the scenes, and some right in front of our noses, yet blind to see it. A simple checking of the post history of AL would have alerted anybody that that user account belongs to me.

Thanks to those who came to my defense.

Apologies to those who may have found it cruel.

~Bruno Kucinskas
~Al the Alpaca

Lesson appreciated. I didn't vet.

Glad there isn't some jerk hassling you!
