241  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Abby Gets Hot About Israeli War Crimes on: November 26, 2012, 09:30:29 PM
I would encourage anyone who watches it do your own fact verification of anything 'reported' there.

Absolutely, as you would with BBC, NPR, CNN, FOXABCBS, et al.

So what did Abby say in this report that was not factual?

The entire premise of apartheid and it being perpetrated by israel is false.

If palestine is a state, then it should be able to control it's population to an extent... at least enough to stop them from launching rockets into israel - if they can't then israel is legally allowed (under international law) to invade/bomb or otherwise use war to prevent further attacks.

In my personal opinion palestine isn't a nation, has never been a state and never had a government.

I guess what it comes down to is that corrupt liberal journalists like this woman... can't have it both ways. Either palestine is a nation (in which case it isn't aparteid)... or palestine isn't a nation in which case missles being launched isn't an act of war it's an act of terrorism.

"corrupt liberal journalists"

Christ, is it possible for people to have a political argument in these days without it boiling down to "corrupt liberal" and of course the ever-popular opposite 'dumb conservative' statements?

Ya I heard about that, it's such unnecessary bloodshed.

I also really wish the U.S. would stop giving so much money and guns to Israel. There's nothing that annoys me more than hearing about how other countries are using american-gifted weapons to kill their own enemies.

What else would weapons be used for?

But do your research before commenting on where Israel gets it weapons.  It seems Israel likes to gear their military men and women with Glocks (Austria), Browning (Belgium), Baretta (Italy), H&K (Germany), and M4/M16 (USA).  They also have a large sizeable ammunition cache that originally was made in the Soviet Union.  This was obtained after defeating their enemies in war and capturing the weapons.  When getting to the sophisticated weapons, then that is mostly made in America, but where else would they get their fighter planes, Airbus?

So what your saying is, I need to do my research because Israel doesn't get financial aid and weapons from the U.S., BUT Israel gets financial aid and weapons from the U.S.?

Makes sense.

Actually - I think he meant that you say "so much money and guns" well... the money being given isn't even one half of one percent of your national budget, and it's less than 3 percent of israels national budget. It really isn't much money when you compare it to all the other foreign aid the us provides.

As for guns, we trade with israel (who happens to be at the bleeding edge of weapons tech) They're getting known good hardware in exchange for designing manufacturing processes for new weapons tech. The fairness of this trade is debatable imo... but so far it seems to be working out well for both sides.

By population, we give more money to Israel than any other nation (except Afghanistan, which I don't agree with either). I think you guys are really missing the point here (which is amazing because it seems so obvious), we're aiding another country in it's own little wars for no reason. You're argument is "well it's really not THAT much". I don't give a fuck how much it is, $400 per Israeli citizen is a hell of a lot of money that could be going towards internal problems right now. But instead of using that money on ourselves we're just throwing it to another nation that spits on us so it can fight wars that we have no part in which just fuels the hate other nations in the region have for us so we can spend MORE money on fighting other wars in the region that we shouldn't be fighting in the first place (run-on sentence, I know). If we stop giving money to Israel will it solve all our financial problems here in the U.S.? Pry not. But it's one of thousands of instances in which we are throwing away money for no good reason and then complaining that we can't balance our budget.

As far as weapons go, since when is it o.k. to trade modern weapons to another nation so it can fight a small civilian population (that we have no quarrel with) that's using home-made bombs and rockets that half the time don't even work properly?

You are doing it

FOR YOUR OWN PROFIT.

You are not giving money for free to anyone.

Got it? It's simple!

>"You are not giving money for free to anyone."
>"You are not giving money for free"
>"not giving money for free"
>wat

They're paying us back plus interest? I didn't know man, i'm sorry.

I play quite a few AoS's, spillback from my war3 days.

Although the term 'rpg' is used loosely when it comes to AoS's.

I'll still be forced to indirectly aid them, yes I won't be fighting. This wasn't like an official statement I was making to the press, I've never had a off-hand forum post torn apart this much lol.

Let me reword so I don't offend others delicate sensibilities:

[theory] If I were Israel and were planning a spring offensive against Iran, then I would start by tamping down Hamas and it's ability to get involved locally. Then I could concentrate on Iran.  [/theory]

If I were Israel, and wanted to give Iran a bloody nose, I'd ask my big friend the US to go bully them around.

Us? You got a mouse in your pocket?

I was born, grew up, and currently live in the U.S., hence "us" as a pronoun. I sometimes forget to speak in the 3rd-person when on internationally-used sites.

Why is everyone so surprised at legalization of weed? This has been coming for a long time. Even my mother-in-law in Washington voted for legalization. The real question is "why was it ever illegal?"

Yes finally, in the 21st century with... Iran? wtf.

Marijuana is used quite a bit in Iran, especially in cooking.

It's also a hell of a lot cheaper than it is here (the U.S.). I think it's going for $5 a gram on average right now.

As far as smoking goes, last time I checked it is actually illegal to smoke it but it's a law that is never enforced. Opium usage is so heavy in Iran that weed is practically a baby drug.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/18/us-palestinians-israel-hamas-idUSBRE8AD0WP20121118

Obama is quick to respond but tentative to intervene as the conflict escalates (A tendency that is being mirrored by leaders around the world including many EU nations).

I am also noticing that most people who are commenting on these stories across the various news sites are convinced that the media is being biased against their 'side of the conflict' (if you will). What surprises me is that in most of the articles I've read there appears to be little to no bias in either direction, just a statement of what happened, how many died, and what various nation's responses were. It seems that instead of taking into account all information and THEN making a decision, most people seem content to simply refuse any information that goes against what they already believe (or rather what they've already been told to believe by their political parties).

256  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Question Everything? on: November 18, 2012, 09:12:06 PM
You are taught to question everything life throws at you, to doubt everything you hear.  It's logical to do so.  At what point, though, do you stop questioning things and start convicting your own beliefs?  You believe something about every subject imaginable, you may not be aware of what your beliefs are, though.  Is there really a need to question anything?  Everything just is.  If you can live without doubt, you can live without fear and when there's nothing to fear, you're left with love.  Why not believe in yourself and your abilities to do things?

I think there's a difference between blindly believing in something and believing in something with the understanding that you might be wrong. I think pride and consistency in one's own beliefs is a very good thing, but you should never consider your convictions beyond disprovable. Ironically our politicians have neither pride, consistency, or the ability to understand that they could be wrong.

But I personally know many of my friends who started  with marijuana and finished with heroin, later they died after 2 .. 3 years. No one can change my mind after I've been to their funerals.

You had some stupid friends... Heroin is pure garbage.
BTW, Marijuana wasn't the reason they started using heroin. The fault was on your friends, not on MJ Wink
I just do not think I'm better than my friends, it is logical that I could end up like them. Therefore, i do not use marijuana. It's simple for me - I do not do that, which led my friends to the grave. Maybe it's silly, but it works. I am here and I am writing this. Wink

I smoke weed myself but I hear ya man, I've watched a friend of mine go through the same thing. Everyday I expect to get that phonecall.

Those of us with highly addictive personalities have to be extra cautious too.
