241  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Official launch of Cryptogenic Bullion on: June 28, 2013, 02:05:03 AM
In accordance with the happenings in this thread, I believe you owe me two rewards for guessing the name of your currency, twice.

You may send the rewards to this address: 5X1oqX5oQ8V12Dg9zwoD7mrQGb3FXU5tEY
242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Warning... on: June 27, 2013, 09:06:28 PM
It's a B, not a 3. Stop guessing names with 3's already.

Hell, stop guessing names at all, I already posted what it is.

I can confirm the name has not yet been "guessed".

My Canadian friend will get a reward for being the closest, but one is still available for someone who gets it correct, eh  Wink

bits, bars, bullions, balls, bags, balloons, baskets, am i getting close? It was bonds until you changed it.

Cryptogenic Bullion is correct. Kind of an anticlimactic finish to the contest, lol, but well done sir. I ask that you download the wallet after launch and send me your address to claim your reward.

Everyone else, thank you for your contributions to this thread. Look for the official launch soon with a full explanation of what this innovative currency concept is as well as additional giveaways  Grin

Aww, too bad, i was hoping it would be bobbles.

This means I get two rewards now, no?

Huh

 Roll Eyes

I'm not talking about the regular use in-thread emoticons. I'm talking aabout the message icons, that display next to the thread topic in the forum.

Oh god. I've never seen those before. We should get rid of this entirely and immediately before someone uses them and this board looks like every schoolyard ever.

I don't think that's quite necessary, but replacing the emoticons with more descriptive icons would be useful.

It wouldn't even be hard, just grab the mining icon from litecoin, some random faucet icon (i'm sure there's many), perhaps abe's icon for block explorers, and find something generic for exchanges. Maybe even add an icon for p2pools.

246  Other / Meta / New Message Icons? on: June 27, 2013, 05:11:20 PM
May I suggest that new message icons be implemented on the forum? Ones that actually mean something in relation to crypto-currency discussions?

For example, a mining icon to visually mark threads announcing/discussing a mining pool, or a faucet icon for threads about coin faucets.

I mean, these emoticon icons are practically useless, leaving only half of the available message icons even partially useful, and they're vague at best. Most people don't even bother using them which just makes the entire column pretty useless.

lets see, what came out the last few days...

Globalcoin and Tradecoin i think are all that's released so far...

ybcoin and nanotokens should be released soon, also those cryogenic bonds...

Has anyone requested richcoin and xencoin be added yet?

maybe you should add geistgeld as well, for nostalgia's sake.

"The only problem i have with that system is that since there's no incentive for anyone to keep a full history there's a potential for sections of that history to disappear entirely." -- The_Catman

True, but I don't see any problem with that. In fact, if a node doesn't care to stay up-to-date on the Ledger's contents, it could not maintain a ledger at all, and happily execute rounds for everyone else. But why? the ledger is not difficult to set up or maintain. If you wanted to force every node to maintain the ledger, simply require an additional consensus round on the ledger's hash (I mentioned this in the paper, but dismissed it as unnecessary).

Well yeah, I said as much in the rest of that statement, right before I stated specifically why, in spite of that, it may still be an issue.

It shouldn't have an effect on the system, and i suppose that makes coins more anonymous, but it can make the "ledger" appear less reliable to some people, therefore preventing the currency from taking off well.

correct me if I"m wrong OP, its a small block chain chain that only keeps track of the most recent transactions.  historical chain resides locally on each node in the network and can be reconstructed on the fly.  This makes the blockchain lightweight and fast.

It's the network that is really the most interesting part.  It is placing the peer to peer UDP style fire and forget system to one where each node or more reliably interconnected with others.

I think he calls it a "ledger" (i corrected my previous comment). I've heard the idea before, it's like having a book (or ledger) that you write down accounts and amounts and scratch out the old values when new transactions happen.

The only problem i have with that system is that since there's no incentive for anyone to keep a full history there's a potential for sections of that history to disappear entirely. It shouldn't have an effect on the system, and i suppose that makes coins more anonymous, but it can make the "ledger" appear less reliable to some people, therefore preventing the currency from taking off well.

"... with a fancy new blockchain?" -- TheCatman

I wouldn't classify it as a blockchain at all -- rather, it is a true ledger, which simply records the current balance in all accounts. For example, in Bitcoin, determining the balance in an "account" requires a complete rescan of the entire blockchain. In Zapcoin, one simply reads the balance. -- Shatosi

Yeah, I corrected that.
251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Zapcoin: distributed, no-trust altcoin that verifies in seconds on: June 27, 2013, 04:10:41 PM
hmm, interesting. Sounds like a PoS system with a fancy new blockchain?

*or rather, a lack of a blockchain in favour of a fancy ledger.

I just woke up so the wall of text is a bit much to decipher atm, but i think that was basically the gist of it, yeah?

Cryptogenic Bonds Roll Eyes

You know a bond isn't supposed to be it's own currency eh? They're basically a loan, absolutely worthless if you don't have another currency/commodity backing it.
253  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] TradeCoin (TDC) Pre-Release Thread on: June 26, 2013, 06:58:27 AM
I may have to push the release back a couple of days in order to incorporate proof of stake to gays against 51% attacks.

...wait, what?

Hey, how about a countdown clock...   Grin

Hard to set a countdown clock when you don't know when you're counting down to.
256  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NMC] Faster browsing with Acrylic DNS Proxy (cache) - .bit enabled on: June 25, 2013, 03:20:51 PM
You could also just use OpenNIC as the regular network DNS and get access to all those extra TLDs, with no privacy issues.

Or use BlockAid and get automatic routing through government blocks back to the site you were trying to go to, and keep the OpenNIC TLDs.
257  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Process for Exchange Acceptance on: June 25, 2013, 07:06:42 AM
this depends entirely on what exchange you're talking about.

Most exchanges have their own rules, processes, and requirements for adding new coins, including votes, time, and network reliability.

Cryptsy on the other hand generally accepts any coin with a functioning, clean client and a request (or permission) from a/the dev.

valuecoin, bottlecaps, sifcoin, mastercoin... what else came out this week?
259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Forking Alt-coins on: June 24, 2013, 09:44:37 AM
It can make development a pain in the ass if you're working on multiple coins at the same time.

If there's a bunch of repos forked from each other, github will only allow you to have one of them hosted on your account at a time. If I wanted to work on Florincoin and Bitcoin (Florincoin forks back to Bitcoin through Litecoin) at the same time, I would have to setup a new account (or an organization) to host one of them (or you could fork one of them into a branch of the other, but that's just a mess).

Really, if you're changing a project in a way you know won't ever get pushed back to the original, you shouldn't be using forks.

If you want to add bug fixes from the coin you based yours off of, you can do a pull from that repo into your local repo and push back to github. That's the best way to do it regardless.
