Anyone have an inside view into the process before a coin is accepted into an exchange?

this depends entirely on what exchange you're talking about.

Most exchanges have their own rules, processes, and requirements for adding new coins, including votes, time, and network reliability.

Cryptsy on the other hand generally accepts any coin with a functioning, clean client and a request (or permission) from a/the dev.
