2441  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Guide to get started with mining? on: May 12, 2013, 06:43:35 PM
Is there any good guides that explain how to get started with mining for total newbies?

Thanks

Antony

The CGMiner readme file is a good place to start.

Also these pages are good guides

2442  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: cgminer suddenly stopped working? on: May 12, 2013, 06:40:51 PM
Give me this warning:

Quote
[2013-05-12 17:22:23] Started cgminer 2.11.3
[2013-05-12 17:22:24] ADL found less devices than opencl!
[2013-05-12 17:22:24] There is possibly more than one display attached to a GPU

[2013-05-12 17:22:24] Use the gpu map feature to reliably map OpenCL to ADL
[2013-05-12 17:22:24] WARNING: Number of OpenCL and ADL devices did not match!
[2013-05-12 17:22:24] Hardware monitoring may NOT match up with devices!

It's a headless Xubuntu Linux based mining rig.

After those warnings, only 1 or sometimes 2 GPUs work, not all three like usual.

Sounds like this thread.

ok i got cgminer to work but now it says nned to supply one server.   How do i do this.

The Executive Summary in the Readme and the CGMiner thread Top Post have examples on how to do this.

First you have to join at least one pool.  Did you do that yet?

2444  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: cgminer slowed down after fresh windows install on: May 12, 2013, 11:41:37 AM
You were probably using older .bin files before which were compiled on a different Catalyst/SDK combination that was more efficient.  So you can either try to backlevel those to the earlier configuration or just keep what you have since it is working.

Well since your in the Bitcoin>Mining>Mining support section, why don't you try bitcoin mining?
2446  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Want to try mining on: May 12, 2013, 11:32:35 AM
no i have an ASUS EAH5750 windows vista running the asus runs open gl not open cl so this i think is the problem.  my video card is not open cl it says its open gl in the catalyst settings.  Does anyone know if this video card can mine coins or not capable or is there a way to download a driver for this my drivers i think are up to date and vista is also been updated i think.  anything?

I just want to try and install cgminer at least before i go out and buy video cards and not even know how to install this thing.  Is it hard or am i in trouble with trying to install this for example if i buy one of these cards will i be able to install and run cgminer.

That card should be able to mine.  Haven't heard of many people using Vista though.

But at any rate that is a 5xxx series GPU so you want to use OpenCL SDK of 2.1 through 2.5, you don't want to go any higher than that. You will probably need to experiment with what version of Catalyst driver work best.  If you are using a newer Catalyst which has an OpenCL SDK/Runtime higher than 2.5 make sure you do a custom install and deselect the OpenCL and then manually install an older one.

The card you have should be similar to my 5770 in performance and it is in the Hardware Comparison Chart linked below.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Also read the CGMiner FAQ section in the readme as it has suggestions as to what Catalyst and OpenCL SDK would be best.

2447  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Windows 7 Server Edition for Mining Rig? on: May 12, 2013, 03:10:34 AM
I've never heard of such a thing as Windoze 7 Server Edition.  Did you just dream that up?  Or are you talking about Windoze Server 2008?
2448  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Want to try mining on: May 12, 2013, 03:06:57 AM
Please tell me if i am just wasting my time even trying this.

I plan on running windows xp
cgminer    never used or set up a miner it will be my first time.

i am going to order an asics from butterfly labs whenever hopefully i get it soon.

Plan on buying a gpu card to start and learn how to set up miner software and hardware etc..

Is this something that can be achived without any experience and learn from the advice just from this forum.

Is cgminer difficult to install is there anything else that i can run such as gui miner with asics since its easier
or should i just not attempt it and avoid mining altogether is it to late in the game to even start with asics being on market.

What are your thoughts.  All and every reply is appreciated.

CGMiner is very easy to install.  Just unzip it into its own directory and run it.

As far as being to late?  Well that depends on what your goal is.  If you want to get rich quick then you may be too late.  If you want to mine for the long term return then jump on in and go for it.  It's up to you.
2449  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Best versions of Catalyst/APP/ADL for Linux? on: May 11, 2013, 06:15:16 PM
Maybe I should go with SDK 2.6/2.7 since the 7850 is the faster card.

You have to go with 2.6+ SDK for 7xxx cards.
2450  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Best versions of Catalyst/APP/ADL for Linux? on: May 11, 2013, 06:13:19 PM
Have you read the FAQ section of the CGMiner readme?

I have! But I've also seen people posting that they've had better rates with Catalyst 12.10 and 13.1, so I'm curious if the FAQ matches recent experience, and if a later driver might actually be better.

But, re-reading the FAQ brings up another question--if APP SDK 2.4 and 2.5 are best for 6xxx cards, and 2.6 and 2.7 are best for 7xxx cards, which will give me the best performance for my hybrid 6xxx/7xxx system? Maybe I should go with SDK 2.6/2.7 since the 7850 is the faster card.

You haven't seen the scads of post stating not put 5xxx/6xxx cards in the same rig as 7xxx?  Which I believe is stated in the FAQ as well?
2451  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining clients won't work because of opencl.dll can't be found on: May 11, 2013, 06:04:42 PM
Hi there

I'm very new to mining so please be gentle.  Tongue

I can't get any mining clients to work because they say that opencl.dll can't be found. My video adapter is ASUS HD7770. I've recently installed the opencl.dll download from the ATI website and it didn't work.

I've tried to research this issue and I found that some others had experienced similar problems but I'm still unclear what the solution is.

If anybody can help then thanks.

You need the OpenCL SDK or Runtime which is usually included in the Catalyst driver package and can be downloaded separately

Read through the FAQ section of this readme and it will make some suggestions as to what versions of Catalyst and SDK you should be running.

2452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can anyone explain mining ...simply? on: May 11, 2013, 04:37:56 PM
I want to mine litecoins.

Then you shouldn't be posting in the Bitcoin section.

The litecoin section is under alternate currencies.
2453  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: cgminer crash on windows 7 on: May 11, 2013, 04:06:44 PM
The FAQ section of the readme has suggestions for what Catalyst version and OpenCL SDK/Runtime.

The OpenCL with Catalyst 2.8 is not good for 5xxx series GPU's.  You need to use something along the lines of OpenCL SDK 2.1 to 2.5 and NOT 2.6 or higher for Bitcoin mining.

Now is that the cause of your crash's?  I have no idea.

Do you happen to know what GPU your using or what coin your mining?
2456  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why does everyone think Solo Mining is a waste of time? on: May 11, 2013, 01:54:19 PM
There comes a time when you wont get anymore than penies but you wont get paid because the minimal amount you need to get a payout is 0.1 BTC ($10 USD)  Are there any pools that have a lower limit like 0.01 USD ?

I'm surprised the p2pool fanatic's haven't chimed in on this one.

P2pool will payout your portion every time a block is found regardless of how small your share is.

Read up on "bag of pennies" wallet and the ramifications of that for you.
Sam

Not exactly true.  The p2pool doesn't have infinite resources so the share chain only records so many shares.  If your hashing power is very low then there is a high probability you won't have any shares in the share chain at the time a block is found.

D&T,
Thank for the info.

This is a little troubling since what is "very low" hash rate is in state of flux at the moment and soon "very low" could be measured in Ghs.

Choosing which multipool strategy?

Failover, Round Robbin? Want to use mutiple pools at the same time
Rotate? I'm not a pool hopper ;-)

Balance vs Load Balance?
Don't get it from README.
Maybe someone can explain it in a few simple words?

what are the pros and cons?

regards bcm42

Balance tries to balance share between all pools in your list.  I don't know how this would work with variable difficulties.

If you want to evenly distribute your shares between pools reliably I would use the rotate and select a time frame like an hour or three or a day, it will rotate between the pools and mine for the time period you select and then move to the next one.

switched to stratum.ozco.in and connected right off. weird. oh well.

Sorry, I misread your post.  I'm using stratum.ozco.in:3333 and that is working.

I was not using us.ozco.in:3333 so I don't know if that is working or not.

US.ozco.in down? not been connection (port 3333) for most of the day now.

It's been fine for me.
