2461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin confirmations times are taking over 4 EFFING HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on: April 27, 2015, 01:45:02 PM
There is no world-wide money transfer system that settles transaction faster than those 4 hours. Well, Bitcoin and its clones are most of the time much faster. If you are willing to accept the risc of chargebacks, you should accept 0-confirmation transactions.

I send euro from my bank to the person with the same bank in 1-2 hours.

You are not sending euro, just some numbers changed in your bank, similar to doing an internal transaction in one of the bitcoin exchanges, some numbers changed in your bank's database, does not involve any real money transfer

i know but you get the point though, euros will be available in 1-2 hours.

Has thought been given to how useful GetGemz is for a single user?.. It's important that the network is well seeded and if it can be useful without having a substantial network, perhaps that will help bed it down. I wonder, is content visible to public - is there a direct url to each users content? Promoting the most active channels might help create excitement. If GetGemz is a magnet for users who do not already know other users, that might help engage a user base who does find everyone there.

Other quick impressions, some of the app looks great but customisable colours and backgrounds will be a big plus.. pink isn't to everyones taste and in the absence of content flowing it might keep a new user busy and help them have something invested.

Also, perhaps consider what QQ's tencent http://t.qq.com/ does to engage new users, with rewards for activity - badges and bonus features for creating activity. It's frustrating at first to have to get points in order to not just use from the default selection of backgrounds but if you get the points system right, it can give a sense of achievement.. GetPointz for playing the game.. and of course perhaps in GetGemz, points mean prizes (Gemz). Cheesy

Perhaps also suggest other users to connect to. Find community celebrities that everyone can follow.

What kind of content do you mean here?

You can customise the chat background in settings.

There are several ways to create activity, but like nextgencoin said more smart ideas can be added down the line if the dev sees them valuable.

The Invitation System—Determining Who To Reward
which is in beta now

The first part of the model is based on the invitation system. When each new GetGems account is created, the new user is asked to confirm which user invited him into the network.

This process is easy because the inviter’s username is usually prefilled, since it comes attached to the invitation link for downloading the GetGems app that users can share with their friends. A new user can override the invitation credit and give it to any user he wants. (See the section on presale perks to find out what happens when the new user gives no invitation credit.)

From this point on, the system remembers the original inviter for every user in the network, and every user has an original inviter. This is a key point of the model.

Counting Active Users

The next part of the model involves determining the number of active users. Since airdrops occur every day, we only consider active users during the previous twenty-four hours.

An “active user” in a given a twenty-four-hour period is defined as one who has used the Gems app in that time period and who has performed several social activities within it (such as sending an instant message, trading gems, and so on). A user is marked as either “active” or “not active.” There is no regard to the actual amount of activity. It is important to note that this part of the algorithm is a probable target of attempted fraud. The algorithm employs various techniques to filter fraudulent users and avoid “activity spam.” (See the section about avoiding fraudulent activity and spam.)

After the system determines the daily list of active users, the algorithm checks for their original inviter, and then counts the total number of active users per original inviter.

For example, let’s assume user A invited users A1, A2 and A3, and user B invited users B1, B2 and B3. During the twenty-four-hour period, users A1, A2 and B3 were determined to be active. After counting the totals, user A has a count of 2 active users and user B has a count of 1.

Factoring It All In—The Contribution Score

The final part of the model involves calculating a contribution score for every user in the network. The number of gems in the airdrop is divided between users according to their contribution score.

For example, user A has a contribution score of 20 and user B has a contribution score of 5. If we had 100 gems in the airdrop, user A would receive 80 gems and user B would receive 20 gems.

The contribution score for a user is calculated according to two complementary factors:

The total number of new, active users that the user invited during the time period. This calculation is directly related to the active-user counts (total of active users per original inviter).

The total number of gems that the user currently holds in his account. This means that users with large amount of gems will be rewarded more generously than users without gems.

I believe counting active users and contribution score hasn't been implemented yet.

Potential advertisement model
The Gems you pay for ads goes to the users.

Pay for sending personal unsolicited messages

One of the main problems of any communication platform is spam. The fact that communication is constantly becoming cheaper enables spammers to send bulk messages to unwilling recipients. The common approach to spam is heuristics-based flagging and filtering (this is how gmail works). The problem is that this method is extremely inaccurate and only works well if the same exact spam message is duplicated thousands of times. Users resort to hiding their personal address in order to avoid spam. Consider what would happen if a celebrity like Oprah would publicly share her personal email - no spam prevention algorithm would be able to handle that.

In a world where the spam problem has been solved, there would be no need to hide your address. Everybody’s personal address will be public and we will no longer rely on secrecy to stop abuse. If you think about it, every major personal communication platform - such as email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp - fails at this point.

Why do we hate spam so much? The answer is basic economics. Reading incoming messages is time consuming, and our time is a very valuable resource. The straightforward solution is therefore basic economics as well. If consuming messages is expensive, sending them should be expensive as well.

By placing a gem price tag on sending personal unsolicited messages, we can guarantee that users pay for the right to contact you. It’s important to emphasize that sending messages between friends (approved contacts) is not considered unsolicited since the recipient has explicitly agreed to receive messages from the sender. This means that within the Gems network, sending messages between friends will always be free.

How expensive should sending a message be? The natural answer should also rely on basic economic principles. The more popular the recipient, the more expensive contacting them should be. This concept is found in the bidding system employed by Google for their adwords platforms. Every advertiser enters a bid of how much they agree to pay for a click. Roughly speaking, the system displays the highest bids, making popular keywords more expensive because people are willing to pay more for them. Borrowing this principle to our model, we can decide on the number of unsolicited messages a recipient will receive in a period of time, and take the highest bids from competing senders.

It might be a good idea to make this mechanism opt out. If a user is willing to receive unsolicited messages, they should be able to allow strangers to message them for free.

Another interesting feature of this mechanism can be read receipts. The sender of an unsolicited message is probably interested in whether the recipient has read the message or not.

Pay for sending private message ads

Unlike unsolicited messages which are personal in nature (like introducing yourself to a beautiful girl and asking if she’s single), ads are commercial in nature.

The central distribution channel in Gems is instant messaging. Private message ads are messages that will appear in the incoming message screen next to messages you receive from your contacts. These messages will be marked as promotions so recipients could differentiate between them and regular personal messages. A popular similar advertising channel is the promotion tab in gmail - where users receive promotional emails from advertisers directly into their inbox.

The key for maximizing the effectiveness of ads is targeted advertising. Keeping ads relevant makes both the viewer and the advertiser happy. Advertisers will not choose a specific list of recipients to receive their ads, but define some relevancy criteria for the target audience. Criteria can be based on content, similar to how Google adwords works - ie. show this ad to users interested in buying an engagement ring. Criteria can also be based on an audience profile, similar to how Facebook ads work - ie. show this ad to single males in the age of 20-25.

Employing content based targeting within Gems is mostly a privacy issue. Platforms such as gmail analyze (anonymously) the content of read messages and try to match a relevant ad based on keyword similarity. This can be performed automatically within Gems, but only on non-secure messages. Secure messages are encrypted client-client end to end and cannot be deciphered by the Gems infrastructure. In addition, content analysis should be opt out to protect user privacy upon request.

Profile based targeting within Gems is a little more tricky. The Gems network does not require users to fill any profile information. An interesting potential solution is to let users provide a voluntary profile by answering questions that will help Gems deliver relevant content more effectively and personally (ie. what is your age). To encourage users to give as much details as possible, the network can compensate users using gems for doing so. A natural way to implement this is by taking part of the cost paid by the advertiser and giving it to the ad recipient. We can even make the payout proportional to the amount of provided profile data. Some profile data can also be generated automatically, but usually at the expense of privacy. A good example is geo-location. As long as the user agrees to share his location with the app, we will be to use this data in order to show local ads. It’s important to emphasize that profile data will never be shared with the advertisers and will only be used by the network anonymously to deliver relevant ads.

The cost of advertising should probably be based on bids as well. The size of the target audience is limited (the number of participating users that fit the ad criteria), so only the ads with the highest bids will be shown. Another interesting question is whether these ads will be paid per exposure or per click (an advertiser only pays if a user opens their message and reads it). If we choose the latter, the natural approach would be to maximize the network profit from ads by factoring both the amount of the bid and the success click-through rate of previous exposures, and choosing which ads to display accordingly.

Pay for priority messages

Quality of service (QoS) is an interesting factor worth exploring for monetization purposes. Consider the real world example of shipping packages. The free shipping method is usually a standard service such as USPS, which takes a little longer to deliver and offers less control over tracking and delivery status. The shipper can pay extra for a premium shipping service such as FedEx, which arrives much faster and is generally more reliable.

Borrowing from this example to the Gems ecosystem, users will pay for sending messages with a higher priority. Delivery speed and reliability are probably not the aspects to play with, because the standard free messages on Gems always arrive virtually immediately and are extremely reliable.

So what aspects can we use instead? One option is the sort order of incoming messages. Normally, incoming messages are sorted according to arrival time. It makes sense that high priority messages will always appear first regardless of arrival time. Another option is to highlight high priority messages and mark them for special consideration. This can be achieved by using a more prominent notification sound or by using bolder colors / urgency icons for the message in the incoming message list. Another option is to send several push notifications regarding a high priority message if it hasn’t been opened by the recipient (instead of just a single one like we do with normal messages). Another option is to provide tighter control over delivery indication and notify the sender more prominently immediately when the recipient has opened the message. Another option is to display priority message inline in the incoming message list, meaning the recipient will not have to click on them in order to read their content.

Generally speaking, if recipients are aware that an incoming message was paid for, they will be more inclined to open and handle it in a timely fashion.

Pay for a sponsored appearance in the contact list / user directory

The Gems user profile will potentially include a status message. Every user can choose their own status line - which is very similar in concept to a Facebook status or WhatsApp status. This status line will appear below every username in the contact list / user directory.

The status line is an excellent platform for a quick 1-line advertisement. Consider the following use case - a startup looking for new developers. A member in the startup will set their status to “looking for talented ios/android developers” and invite any of their contacts to message them about potential applicants they know.

It makes sense to make these appearances sponsored as well. A sponsored result will probably appear first in the list of contacts (and probably be labeled as a sponsored result). In addition, we might also show sponsored results in user contact lists which aren’t related as direct contacts. For example, even if I don’t personally know the startup member looking for a developer, I will still see their sponsored result when I enter my contacts screen or when I search in the user directory.

Keeping advertisements relevant is similar in nature to previous channels, such as targeting by content and targeting by profile. In addition, another interesting criteria is the distance between users (hop count or connection degree - 1st degree are immediate friends, 2nd degree are friends of friends, etc). It makes sense to show sponsored statuses from users who travel in similar circles.

Pay for a commercial company page / e-commerce

The traditional entities within the Gems network are private individuals. Any user can join Gems and connect with their friends. Just like how Facebook grew to accommodate businesses as an entity within the network, Gems might make the same decision as well. Registering a new user as a commercial entity / business is a good candidate for a paid action.

How will company / business users be different from regular users? First of all, the profile page will have a commercial orientation and show relevant details about the business - such as an address / map location, website, logo, phone number, email, link to mobile app, opening hours, etc. In addition, business users will be geared towards e-commerce. Since the Gems network allows for easy fund transfers between users, it will be convenient to use for light e-commerce (1-click purchases).

Deeper e-commerce capabilities will allow businesses to present a goods/services catalog, support checkout with Gems and provide light order management.

Get the red light district and coffeeshops (where you can buy weed) to accept bitcoin then you got yourself a regular visiting tourist.

The name will kill this app. GetGems sounds silly and stupid.
The color is also ugly. It needs an option to customize the color.

I like the name, they said the same about WhatsApp and tons of other apps. GetGems makes sense because the app is about users paying each other and being rewarded so getting Gems, so it's pretty well thought, it already has grown into people and they are familiar with it.

I think the name is ok but I'm not sure about the label on Google play. Putting Telegram in the name takes some of the uniqueness away possibly, seems like it's just an add on to Telegram. I'm gonna trust the developers have reasons though for this.

Yeah just saw it on google play, if someone searches for Telegram or Bitcoin the GetGems app also shows in the list, i guess thats the advantage, easier to find.

I like GetGems, but there is a lack of information about the plan of implementing functionality and developing the GetGems App.

Actually there is tons of information and updates, check op, community q&a, http://getgems.ghost.io/ and https://twitter.com/getgemsorg.

On a side note anyone knows since btc and gems use same address can gems be store on a Trezor device?

Is gemz a decentralized app? or just the token system?
messaging is completely p2p or saved on a server?

Don't take this as 100% accurate but the app is based on a telegram so your basically using messenger with Telegram so they use end to end encryption, you could find more detail reading about Telegram.

The token is based on counterparty so again if you want to know about that then go to counterparty, but yes its decentralised.

There is some element of decentralised for the airdrop and maintenance of the app, how much that is I don't know. but your communication and your tokens are ultimately not actually based on the app but the two projects I mentioned. So for all intents and purposes yes its decentralised with no info stored.

Thanks for your reply.

I don't see why spending time and effort on a clone of an existing messenger. only to be able to transfer cryptocurrencies in-app?
So much work is done on decentralization of services, y not build a messaging dapp? makes much more sense.

Gemz will be much more attractive as a pure p2p dapp.

Originally it was an original app, it was decided to use the Telegram app as an open source platform. I have positive and negative feelings about it but also the Team have said they will only use it as long as it serves their purposes. It's actually mainly psychological if you think about it though, no need to invent the wheel if someone already has. The big plus is a telegram already has millions of users so for them to switch to gems means they can still use their contacts, there is nothing really negative about using Telgram apart from as I said psychological.

I would research more what Gems is, cause the big thing about Gems is not the app or even the token but the attention model that means the user is paid for allowing targeted advertising. And even as a straight app that sends crypto i have yet to see one that does it anywhere near as elegantly as gems and has btc and other coins as future currencies in the app. It's the killer btc app in my mind, and if it gets a few million users, whether it uses Telegram or not , it simply won't matter.

All I can say is that I wish Gemz good luck, I really do

But when other messaging dapps will soon appear, I don't think that the attention model will be enough for user who are scared for their privacy to use this app.

Mainstream will keep using terrible apps like Whatsapp, while the other will use the most secure ones.

Getgems security for communication is very secure and enough for all users, way more secure than Whatsapp or Line. Read everything about its security https://telegram.org/faq#q-how-secure-is-telegram, even the devs can't decipher your content.

Now Getgems aims primarily the average person, these are billions of users. Those who are scared to use apps are a very tiny amount. Explain an average youth who uses Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat etc. about using a decentralized systeem, you will notice they don't care. I use even Whatsapp for years and never had any privacy related issues.

The attention economy model in Getgems is one of a kind. If the app knows your interests, commercial/e-commerce companies can target you easier and you get ads suited to your interest where you get paid for. I don't know how you should be 'scared' for your privacy if you show your interests or age etc. The average person doesn't have any issue with that.

When things are over regulated or banned, it goes underground... people would use it on the black markets OR they will find ways to move over to the next big thing. {Technology evolves..... take music piracy as a example.... when they saw they could not win the battle, they started to use the technology to their benefit...iTunes etc. etc.}

There is no central organization to shut down....

When the majority of the people pick up on why Bitcoin is being banned, they will start asking questions about the REAL reason, and they will force regulators with their votes to change their minds.
And what will you do when there won't be any exchange market to sell your coins in the future or any services or shops won't be accepting bitcoin  because of the regulations government regulations?
If you can't spend it then your coins are useless.

Dude there are more and more merchants joining, western governments are pretty pro bitcoin. The big cities are starting to battle to become a bitcoin hub, bitcoin is joining the big trading markets. I don't know in which year you are but bitcoin is lightyears away from being banned, even if it would be illegal it would actually attract more skeptics.
