true, but if you are making a 'will' and have the coins in cold storage it's highly likely that you won't spend them.
Everyone needs to spend money to pay for their basic necessities, at a minimum. Those that are most likely to die, those in retirement, will need to spend down the money they intend to pass on to their heirs.
2482  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ghislaine Maxwell Arrested on: July 12, 2020, 10:22:41 PM
Ghislaine Maxwell once boasted she had video of two “high profile” US politicians, along with other powerful figures, having sex with underage girls, claims a former jewel thief who described the disgraced socialite as a nymphomaniac.
The source to this claim has credibility problems, but given how long Epstein (and Maxwell) were able to live freely, I would not be surprised if they both had incriminating evidence against politicians.

There have also been allegations they have spy connections to foreign governments, possibly Israel. To my knowledge, this is unsubstantiated.

If there are Democrat politicians charged over this, and there is evidence to support the charges, the underlying reason why "resistance" to Trump has been so strong.
2483  Other / Meta / Re: Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 10:11:33 PM
A newbie (or anyone) scamming is not a reason to report a post, and posts reported as such will be marked as bad.

If someone is scamming, you can write a post warning onlookers of the scam, leave a negative rating, create a flag, or a multiple of the above.

I might be supportive of the ability of certain users to be able to override the "lock" status of threads opened by low-level users, if the purpose is to warn about a possible scam, or high risk proposition.
2484  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Insure GUI - create a locked sweeping transaction for life insurance on: July 12, 2020, 09:55:35 PM
You will need to create/sign a new transaction every time you spend any of your coin. If you don't, your heirs will be unable to access your coin if you die unexpectedly, unless you have made alternate arrangements to allow your heirs access to your private keys.
2485  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Nothing is truly decentralized using a centralized ISP on: July 12, 2020, 09:45:25 PM

One great option is to use the blockstream satellite feed: it's available most of the world and has no ongoing cost.
If I am not mistaken, this has the same issue as any other centralized ISP as you are trusting the operator of the satellite, blockstream, to provide accurate data, as it is in control of the satellite.

But there is a useful thing you can do-- have a diverse network connection.
Having multiple connections to the internet will help you detect any tampering with the information being sent to you. If you can establish a connection to a server you control located in a different country to connect to the internet as an additional means to connect to the internet, you can become increasingly sure you are receiving untampered information. It should be easier to establish a secure connection that any malicious ISP would have no interest in interfering with.
2486  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: July 10, 2020, 05:47:47 PM
Has bitfinex turned into some kind of train wreck?

Were they ever a perfect exchange? Haven't used them in a long while now but they now not only ask for KYC but also about source of funds.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/aw95wt/my_bitfinex_withdraw_is_locked_they_ask_me_the/

Could be the same thing here. Maybe try again or with a smaller withdrawal, if it doesn't then you probably have to contact them and see what they want from you.

But pages shouldn't take this long to load, try a different browser if it still runs like that.
Bitcoin has become mainstream enough so that major businesses that deal in large amounts of coin have to obtain KYC/AML information about customers who are dealing with large amounts. This is especially true for businesses who need to also use any part of the banking system, even indirectly.

Any business that looks the other way when it comes to money laundering is going to have difficulty staying in business and continuing to access the banking system.
2487  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What happens if you send funds to a customized address? on: July 10, 2020, 05:45:16 AM
It appears that blockchair will accept any string, and will search their database of addresses with the string you provide. It does not appear that blockchair will actually confirm the string you are providing is actually a valid address.

If you do send to an invalid address, the nodes that receive the transaction will not consider it as valid. As a result, your transaction is not propagated and nothing happens.
More importantly, any miner that includes a transaction that sends coin to an invalid address in their block will have the block be rejected by the rest of the network.
2488  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democrats on: July 09, 2020, 04:30:44 PM

Not sure why this is always a talking point.

If its so easy to commit voter fraud, why aren't Republicans doing it too? I highly doubt they're too high and mighty to want to do something like that when the end goal is just winning. It always irks me to think that people think that the DNC would commit voter fraud and always win, while the RNC just sits there and lets it happen.

If it's so easy and done so normally, the RNC would do it too. (Hint: It's not)
It is easy for communist nations to murder innocent citizens (this happens), but this doesn’t happen in the west. The West values individual life and the rule of law, while communist governments will do what it takes to stay in power and control their citizens.

Similarly, Republicans tend to be more principled and try to convince others with facts and logic, while Democrats tend to be more willing to do whatever it takes to obtain and keep power.

I would also note that it was Democrat Secretary of State (for states) that were refusing to corporate with Trumps voter fraud investigation at the beginning of his term.

It is also democrats that constantly try to prevent safeguards from being put into place to maintain the integrity of elections.
2489  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: July 08, 2020, 02:44:34 PM
Does anyone have thoughts on this recently published paper?

Flood & Loot: A Systemic Attack On The Lightning Network
There are a few things that can be done to mitigate this kind of attack.

Force channels to have a minimum amount of value on each side. For example if each side of a channel always has at least 10% of the total channel value, the cost of attempting to execute this attack might be higher than acceptable for someone to try.

Increase the complexity of the time lock. LN closing transactions could have a special flag, and if the percentage of transactions included in a block include this flag, the block must have a flag to be valid. The time lock for the second closing transaction on a LN channel could be such that it can only be confirmed once xx blocks without said flag. The purpose of this is to allow LN node operators more time to claim coin in closing transactions if blocks are full of closing transactions.

2492  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democrats on: July 05, 2020, 10:32:28 PM
Kamala is definitely the big favorite, which isn't surprising.  According to most books, until a week or so ago Val Demmings was #2 and Susan Rice a distant third - now Rice seems to be favored over Demmings across the board and I'm not sure what changed.
What changed is enough people made certain bets, and the odds were adjusted to entice betters to change their betting patterns.

Betting odds are ultimately set in a way that books hope the payout will be approximately the same, regardless of the outcome.

In other news, a potential VP running mate, Tammy Duckworth, said she would consider taking down statutes of Washington, our country's founder. Insane.

The above comments should disqualify Duckworth. Deisha Bottoms should be disqualified due to her handling of the police shooting in her city, Atlanta. Rice will be disqualified due to her liability from her involvement in the spying on the Trump campaign, and the DNC is likely unsure if she will even be out of Jail in November.

I would almost say that Biden the DNC should pick Clinton as Biden's running mate/President after ~4 months if Biden is elected. She is one of few democrats that have not moved so far left that them being on the ticket would not result in Trump winning 45+ states, plus the corresponding down ballot wins.

Back to my original point, if the virus spreads more quickly, the US will reach herd immunity more quickly, and the virus will no longer be a problem.

Wrong point regarding COVID case. Acquired immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is not lasting for long. This has been verified by scientific and empirical data. U.S. officials admitted their mistake regarding the masks at public places. If people were wearing them the current situation would be much better.
Source?
2494  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Coronavirus Outbreak on: July 03, 2020, 05:55:33 AM
Masks
Here is the thing about masks, although they will slow the spread of the Wuhan Coronavirus, they will not actually stop anyone from getting the virus over the long run.

Hospitals have the ability to care for patients and the Military can provide surge hospital capacity if necessary. Currently, there are many people in this hospital who have the virus but are in the hospital because they have delayed seeking care for other health issues.

Back to my original point, if the virus spreads more quickly, the US will reach herd immunity more quickly, and the virus will no longer be a problem. If there are sharply lower numbers of cases 2-3 months before the election, the political cover to have widespread mail-in voting will be removed. Widespread mail-in voting will result in widespread voter fraud (look at what happened in NJ recently where ~20% of mailed ballots were fraudulent), and it is not possible to have a free and fair election with widespread mail-in voting.

I am not sure if we can get herd immunity in ~2 months. We probably have about 6% of the US population infected as of today, and we need somewhere between 40 and 70% of the population to be immune (via having recovered or receiving a vaccine) to outright stop the spread. Currently, mostly young people are getting the virus, who are dying at much lower rates than when NY governor Cuomo was sending infected people into nursing homes to maximize the number of vulnerable people getting infected, and are having hospital stays at around half as older people.

What's the end game? Why would big companies go against the big-business-friendly tax-cutting anti-regulation president?
Social Media companies are very profitable in large part because their employees are very productive. Their employees are very productive because of their heavy use of automation, and of their creation of predictive models that can quickly classify data, allowing actions to be taken on these classifications that would not otherwise be possible.

The above gives employees a unique power over their employers. Employees at Social Media companies are overwhelmingly left-leaning, and are not 'left of center'.

Social media companies don't need low taxes to be profitable, nor do they need low regulations; they need productive employees. There is only so much companies can pay their employees to keep them happy, and attract additional talent, and many tech companies have resorted to unique perks.

I believe section 230 of the communications decency act would protect any LN node operator. This however is not legal advice, and should not be relied upon as such.

LN node operators are also not selling coin to third parties by virtue of their operating a LN node.

Good one, but it won't matter at all.

LN node operators are transferring value , that is all it takes for Fincern to go after them.  Cheesy

On July 29, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued the “Prepaid Access Final Rule” (the Final Rule),
which applied anti-money-laundering requirements to certain prepaid cards, including some gift cards.

LN notes are a IOU for value, Gift Cards are a IOU for value.   Smiley
Funny enough Gift cards can outscale the LN network.  Cheesy
/quote]I will have to disagree with you on this point.

I would view a LN node as something very similar to a miner, which is not a money transmitter.
2497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it worth hosting a lightning node? on: July 01, 2020, 05:50:52 AM

LN was designed for banks, if you are not a bank, you won't profit from running an LN hub.[/b]

I don't think there is evidence to support this statement.

Banks make money by accepting deposits, paying interest on said deposits at a rate less than the rate they lend out the deposits. As I have noted above, the amount LN node operators are earning is far less than deposit rates, and as such, a bank would not be profitable running a LN node.

LN node operators will likely benefit from economies of scale over the long run, and larger operators will likely earn more than smaller operators, however the barriers to entry will still be low.

I also don't think there is any basis for saying that becoming a LN node operator will require any kind of license. This will not be true as long as getting an on-chain transaction confirmed does not require a license. If a group of LN node operators (stupidly) tried to exclude anyone without a license, it would be trivial for other people to create their own LN network with other nodes that does not require a license.

Run one and find out.

But don't be surprised when the feds kick down your door and charge you as a money launder.

2498  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to eliminate Large mining pools on: July 01, 2020, 05:43:41 AM
Members A-D would work on the first phase, each on their own as if they were mining on their own account. Once one of the above members solved the first phase, they send the solution to a server, which sends it to one of members E-F who works on the second phase.

the idea of sharing work (pooling) is to have multiple workers that work in parallel to each other and not reply on other's solution. each worker gets its own work and submits the result of that work then gets the next parallel job.
if a worker has to wait for other worker to finish then it defeats the purpose and the optimization gained by parallel work.
The OP describes the first process to take longer than the second process. If for example, the first process takes twice as long as the second process, a mining pool can allocate 2/3 of miners to work on the first process and 1/3 on the second process, and given enough workers, there will be little 'downtime'.

As an alternative, workers could complete both the first and second processes, periodically send some type of verification they are working. Or a single entity could own many computers, each of which is a miner, and each of which is programmed to send the block reward to the same address controlled by the same entity.

As far as I can tell, they are offering a free trial account to everyone. Why would someone pay $300 for something they can get for free?

Most other cloud service providers also offer similar free trails, such as GCS, AWS, and Microsoft Azure.

But Reddit deleting The_Donald is just savage... I thought that kind of shit is what Reddit is for. That's like Bitcointalk deleting Bitcoin Discussion.
Apparently reddit thinks only certain types of racism is acceptable:

Rule 1: Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and people that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.
Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on their actual and perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or disability. These include victims of a major violent event and their families.
While the rule on hate protects such groups, it does not protect all groups or all forms of identity. For example, the rule does not protect groups of people who are in the majority or who promote such attacks of hate.
