2501  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 cents per kw, Any way to mine? on: January 29, 2016, 12:29:58 AM
If your electricity is $0.21/kWh, it is better not to mine if you do not think mining is your hobby. There are mining farms in China, paying $0.04/kWh.

More like $0.03 from comments I've seen, and at least one small area in the USA that can match that (for now).

I am anticipating the next generation gear (14/16nm full custom) will start arriving before the halfing.
BitFury is talking April, but I suspect Innosilicon might beat them to the punch.
BW.com missed the boat with their B-Eleven NON-full-custom 14nm design, unless it shows up before the end of the month and significantly beats the S7 on price.

The labor cost in the US is too high. In order to run a farm, you also need to construct it and maintain it. The running cost is higher.

Setup is going to be most expensive.  You could have far less people running a mining facility then setup.   A lot can also be automated.   So I think as long as you get cheap electricity it can still be done in US.  But it does take cheap electricity especially at the size your talking about.

There are some hosting centers in US, so it can be done.
2502  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How much BTC Antminer S7 mines per day on: January 29, 2016, 12:23:29 AM
Thank you very much now i know a lot more

A big thing will be your electricity cost.   Do you know your electricity price? Make sure to have any taxes or fees in it.

Also I would take a look at: https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator  It allows difficulty changes with it so much better to calculate over time.
2503  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: January 28, 2016, 11:22:36 PM
Have my S7 running Smiley Due to the amount of noise it makes I underclocked it's frequency to 400. Getting 3TH at that rate. Whenever I find a better place to keep it running I'll up the frequency a bit. There's no way that I'll be sleeping with it in my room.

Why not run it in the garage at full blast and get free heat while you're at it?  You're losing money at 3TH.  If you're living in a cold weather area, lower the fan to 30% and see if the temp is within ok range.  IT would be more livable.  You can also buy custom 3D printed DUCT where you duct the Intake to take in cold intake air from outside and push out the hot air to the outside as well.  If you do that, you can lower your fan speed which is the only thing that is making those noise.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-pack-bitcoin-antminer-s1-s2-s3-s4-s5-s7-zeus-lightning-fan-air-duct-4-pack-/331763938079?hash=item4d3eabf31f:g:edgAAOSwpRRWn~Hp

I would be careful with that seller on ebay, has only sold one item ever. Only has sold one item in last 12 months and it was stated in feedback that communication was good but shipping was slow after payment.

I used this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SL22FW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
And built my own enclosure for the miner out of cardboard.  Works well enough.

That's very creative.   100 extra points for being resourceful and creativity.

I agree it is a intersting way to get the exhust out.  Are you able to take picture of where they all go to?

I'm curious as far a what you did with other end of duct.

I don't see an ASIC!!! see bitfury

And what's up with the old avalon on the table? Grin

I was not quite sure... i was hoping maybe a prototype but after you said it that does look a awful lot like a old avalon.

I hope they do a second video and show chip.  And think video is old?   Watching it a second time it seems like they talk about December as in future.
2506  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New S7 with Bitmain power supply.... what am i missing on: January 28, 2016, 05:04:49 AM
How many volts are you running on?  Is less then 205 the PSU will not power on in most cases.

Do you happen to have 110/120 where your plugging it in?
2507  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need help with amps and S7... on: January 28, 2016, 05:02:37 AM
You guys have been a huge help. Thanks!

I just talked to my electrician. We are doing (3) outlets each connected to its own 240v/30 amp breaker (I have the space). There is a surge protector being installed on the whole panel (internally). I will go with one of the PDU's shown above that are rated for 30 amp but pushes less. The outlets are right by my panel which works perfect. My plan is to only plug 3 miners in each PDU to start as I work my way up to 9 miners (3 PDU's).

Has anyone seen a difference with using the Bitmain power supply compared to the EVGA power supply? The Bitmain's is much cheaper and didn't know if the EVGA is really even necessary with my electrical setup now. I know most people use the EVGA because they are using 120v. Thoughts?

Once again thanks for all of your help thus far.

They're better, more expensive PSU's. If you want cost effective, go ahead. Personally i like the cleanest powers for my miners. But with how much money you can save, then maybe servers PSU's are the way to go.

However getting PSU packages from the forum is a better price. The Bitmain PSU is not really that much of an interesting buy.

EVGA to get the PCIE cables and power needed your up to the EVGA 1600, it runs around 400 or so.   So extremely high.   You can get server PSU's much cheaper.

There are some "kits" that can power multiple S7's if you go big enough.  And there is of course the bitmain server psu.   I have not had any issues with them they seem to work good.

With getting 240 I would compare prices on kit's and bitmains PSU.  Either way you go it will beat the EVGA by far on cost.

You can use 1300W fine, and thats 175USD but yeah its still expensive to power a single S7, especially with the nice kits using J4bberw0ck's breakout boards.

The 1300 does not come with 10 PCIe cables.  Also look at B8/B9 efficiency.   I would not guarantee a 1300 doing it on current batches.

Even if it did run it would be pushing the 1300W pretty much at max unless you under-clock it.
2508  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The New SHA-256 Asic Miner 14nm B-ELEVEN on: January 28, 2016, 04:43:40 AM
well, $2400 for 10TH/s with power consumption of 2600 W.
more expensive than 2x Antminer S7 which has similar hash power.
Rest of cost remind same-psu, duty tax , postage.

But S7 can have in few days, but this one, probably in few months.
July is coming with halving...no chance anyone will buy this...and most important-if its true Smiley

They list power consumption in video as .18 W - .36 W/GH .  I really want to know more about that.  Not sure what to expect with that range.   They do mention 260 Watt/T.

Exciting to see possibly a new miner, but I still want to know more.  And really want to see one in action.  There was possibly a prototype on the desk of first guy, could not tell 100 percent.

OP are you able to say when "soon" is?  Weeks, Months?
2509  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: what am I calculating wrong? (free energy no RoI) on: January 28, 2016, 04:32:12 AM
I assume that I was not paying for the electricity.

On bitmaintech.com S7+PSU+shipping is around 1300 dollars.

with current difficulty you can mine 240 dollars a month or 120 dollars till the next dif increase.

assume an avg. 5 percent dif increase in every 2 weeks, the total amount I'll mine:

The regarding code:

And the results are, even with free electricity you should have avg. difficulty increase below 9% to get RoI

this results made me pull back from investing in an S7 what are your thoughts?

It's no longer a 3 month ROI like it once was.  Your looking at a longer time of mining.   With free it seems like you would reach it... just would be a matter of time.  I think we have had a hard time past 2 months of difficulty we were sitting on a lot less per change.  A lot hope it changes back, but there is no guardsmen in mining.
2510  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Jan 26 to Feb 9 picks are closed! Just setting up. 0.2btc prize on: January 28, 2016, 04:14:37 AM
I was very close last time again but no luck for me. Bitcoinwisdom is not updated for 2 days, which calculator are you using right now? Nextdifficulty? Console in Bitcoin Core?

I do manual  with this one

https://bitcoincharts.com/

Blocks   395329
Total BTC   15.133M

Difficulty   120033340651
Estimated   122081848321 in 1823 blks

Network total   969386.465 Thash/s
Blocks/hour   6.77 / 532 s

Just   divide Estimated   122081848321 by actual Difficulty   120033340651

122081848321/120033340651 =  1.017066   - 1 =  .017066  which is 1.706%

I'm happy to see a 1.7 if we could only keep that I will be happy.  The bad thing is BTC value went opposite way as I hoped, around 383 so we lost around 10 bucks instead of gaining 10.

It is slowly going up though on value just is not fast.
2511  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Could I mine Bitcoin with a MacBook Air? on: January 27, 2016, 06:41:41 PM
You can, but I would not recommend it. The power of the Macbook is the low in order to mine some recognizable amount of Bitcoins.
Try to join a cloud mining service. It makes more sense in my opinion.

Cloud mining there are a ton of scams out there.  So be careful when doing it.  If you do decide that route look into hashnest.

It allows you to buy and sell.  And is legit where a lot are not.
2512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tell me Secure Mobile bitcoin WALLET Please on: January 27, 2016, 06:40:30 PM
mycelium is the best way to go.

I still say it's mycellium with a hardware wallet attached to mobile.  You get the mobility of MyCellium, with the security of a hardware wallet.

That is hard to beat as far as mobile security.

I would get a PSU tester from amazon, you can get it pretty cheap or you can go nicer with PCIE testers and LCD.   That will allow you to measure current if it's working at all.

But if it truly is not powering on check and make sure paperclip is making contact with metal within it.  Make sure you have on a right combination of 2 wires.   And if that does not work you likely will need to email manufacture.

hi
sorry if this has been asked before, but......
i've got 2 x s3 here
started to configure one of them.
got the pool details in ok.
when i change the wan network over to dchp, click change protocol and then apply and save, it just sits there saying "waiting for changes to be applied"
been about 2 hours now.
it's hashing and submitting results to the pool (about 420 - 430 gh/s) but i can't set up the other one until its finished.
any idea how long it could take ??
many thanks

2 hours on changing to DHCP?   It should be like 30 seconds or so.   Have not heard of it taking that long.

It has been a while since I have dealt with S3's.  But I don't remember any operation taking that long.
2516  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: January 27, 2016, 06:20:17 PM
Did you get anything out of them yet, apart from the occasional patronizing quip?

We filed at the Kiryat Gat Miagistrates Court on the 11th Jan, served to their lawyers (who rejected it) shortly after, and again by registered mail on 18th Jan. They've yet to file a response. The case is open to the public which means anyone can request documents from it, and although there isn't a public case docket I can post the documents on here and give a rough translation from Hebrew. I'll transfer these to a scam accusation eventually.

Thanks for translation or I would have been lost.   What is expected time frame with it being a international case?

I was curious if it is a long drawn out process if they don't settle, or if it is half decent on time.
2517  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S7: Batch 2 vs. Batch 8 on: January 27, 2016, 06:15:30 PM
Hey guys,
i am reading this Board for quite a while, and now, i have a question and need your advice.

I want to buy a S7.
My local dealer has 2 Batches in Stock: B2 and B8 (please donīt ask my why)
As i donīt want to buy at Bitmine site (mostly because of the customs in Germany i think) i would like to buy one of the Batches.

He offers:
S7 B2: 1299?/$1411 (4,66TH/sec)
S7 B8: 1369?/$1487 (4,73TH/sec)

Is the B8 worth the higher price?
Is there anything where one is better than the other?
I read a lot about it but in the end i am a little undecided

I would really appreciate your Opinion.

Thank you in advance
Greetings
Mr. McSeth

The B2 would have more chips, and likely a little more efficiency.   The B8 they have on a solid hashrate, but less chips and higher freq so lower efficiency.    How does warranty work?  That would factor in I would think on a B2 vs B8.  But not sure with reseller.

Is there any reason you don't want to do bitmain?  B8 and B9 is substantially less there, you would need a decent vat to make the difference.

I'd really go with Bitmain's at 900$ per unit, i have difficulty seeing 160% Markup because of VAT and duty. I also don't like the idea of dealing with a reseller for warranty purpose. However if the reseller is trully trustworthy, maybe he could effect some kind of decent "warranty" that does not deal with the manufacturer.

Is there maybe a German guy who as ordered direct at Bitmain and can tell me anything about VAT and duty?
Search did not get any results.
thanks guys

Back to Topic: So the B2 is slightly in to prefer?

You could email bitmain and see what they ship it as and look it up that way.  Or best bet would be go over to the main S7 thread and ask about VAT.  You get a lot more views in there and a better chance of an anwser.

But you get a new warranty, It should be cheaper then reseller.   I would go with bitmain over that price.  If it was sold as used and a lower price... then maybe but you know he's mining those machines on reseller and selling for a markup still.  And buying off him  you have no warranty it does not transfer.
2518  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: January 27, 2016, 06:09:09 PM
Has anyone ever figured out how to disable the SmartSpeed function other than changing the minimum fan speed? Mine temperatures are 28 53 69 and the minimum fan speed is at 20% but the fan speed keeps ramping up and down. I just want to make the fan at a constant speed/noise.

No the auto function is locked in the on position.

Well, I finally found a way to make the fan speed at a constant % without any ramping up or down. BE WARNED IT MAY OVERHEAT!!! I set mine to a constant 20% and it got up to 81 degrees. but it did stay at a constant 20% fan, which was like 1100 RPM.

The file is in /etc/init.d/cgminer and there is a line called:

Code:
AVA4_OPTIONS=" --avalon4-fan $_fan-100 --avalon4-freq $_cf "

That $_fan is the % you set in the GUI and you see that 100? It's the max % that the fan can go too. So if you set 20% in the GUI, it will set your fan as 20%-100%.

So if you changed that 100 to 20, then the max would only be 20%, so it would be 20%-20%. See following code:
Code:
AVA4_OPTIONS=" --avalon4-fan $_fan-20 --avalon4-freq $_cf "

WARNING: Be careful though, running at a constant 20% max might be too low from my testing (varies on your ambient temperature), since it was only at around 1100 RPM and with my ambient temperature, it rised up to 81 degrees fast. So maybe set the GUI fan speed to 100, and edit /etc/init.d/cgminer for max 100, and test by -10 increments each time to be safe, so the temperatures don't run that high.

P.S. if you don't know how to edit or get to /etc/init.d/cgminer, then maybe it's best not to touch it =)

do 30%    and let us know the temps

After some testing, 30% is too low. I changed the code to:
Code:
AVA4_OPTIONS=" --avalon4-fan $_fan-55 --avalon4-freq $_cf "

So it'll just be 20% in the GUI with a max fan speed of 55%. So the fan won't ramp up no more, the max it can go is 55% fan speed. and the temps are  28 51 67 with fan speed at a constant 2600 rpm to 2790 rpm. It won't go past 3000+ rpm any more due to me setting the hard cap of max fan speed of 55%. This seems fine too me since it seems like sometimes the Avalon 6 ramp up the fan up and down randomly like at low to full speed then back down. Probably due to the auto overclock or smartspeed option it has. This is all with a volt of 11.7 in the GUI.

The reason I'm doing this is because noise is a big factor for me and this seems like the best solution / settings for low constant noise with no ramping of the fan.

I did try the hard cap of the max fan speed to 40%, but the temps got to around 75, not sure what is safe, so I tried to tweak it where the temps are at least 70 or below.

Would it be safe to run it at a temp of 75 constantly?

Edit: Did some more testing, if you change the code to just:
Code:
AVA4_OPTIONS=" --avalon4-fan $_fan --avalon4-freq $_cf "

Then it will just run what ever flat fan speed % you enter in the GUI, so you only need to edit the file once and play around with the fan speed % through the GUI. If you do it this way, the fan speed is not variable no more, it's just a flat constant fan speed % to what ever you set.

It is supposed to be safe at 75

Ambient temps need to be under 95f  but I have found at 92f things get a bit shaky

you have 29 as ambient temps you are good.

It is designed to run  right near 75.

although I suspect  70 is better I just do not know that.

I'm guessing your getting winter air right now (could be wrong).  But I would agree with Phil 75 should be good.  The only thing is the miner twords top would be spinning faster RPM and pushing a lot more air through miner then if you max it at 40 you mentioned.

In 90's I suspect it would be over double possible close if not hitting the 100 percent.   So my fear would be you need to watch miner temp's more carefully.  If you have a quick heat up.... might not be good for miner.

So keep in mind the risks that are there limiting the fan, as damage is a possibility in worst cases.
2519  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Discussion about the life time of hardware on: January 27, 2016, 06:03:53 PM
You have a few options for cooling.

If I recall, Morocco tends to be dry - in which case "evaporative cooling" is DEFINITELY an option to investigate.

Mechanical cooling (aka Air Conditioning) will cost you appx. 20-25% (depends on the efficiency of the A/C unit) of the amount of electricity you use for your miners.

Fan cooling via massive airflow doesn't work so well in hot (high 20s C and higher) temperatures, if that's your only option PLAN to underclock (and if possible undervolt) the units to be ABLE to keep them cool enough to operate.

Given all of the factors above, I doubt you will be able to profit enough with an S7 to be able to pay back the cost of buying one, even if Bitcoin price takes a BIG runup around the halfing this summer.

You are lucky to have evaporation cooling as an option.  I would research it and go with it, cheapest option there is really.

I live in a area that weather does not allow evaporation cooling so I used lots of CFM's from fan's and a good exhaust.  I think your country's heat might make this a little bit hard though.

AC you will not be able to justify it's just to high at this point in miniing.
in morocco the heat is normal, i'm gonna use "evaporation collin system i watch some vids it's simple Smiley, why you can't use evaporation u live in desert or what ?

Evaporative cooling works great where you can easily evaporate water. In essence, you mostly need dry ambient air. Desert would be quite good to evaporate water, aside its average high temperature.

Best places are where there is dry air and moderate temperature.

Sadly this is the case for me we have a decent amount of humidity in the air, so evaporation cooling is not that effective compared to dry air.  So my best option which I do is use high amount of CFM to push air from miners and a good exhust to send it away.   This is in my  mining area I do all this.

When I first got into mining it was GPU's and i used the heck out of box fan's.   But I've grown and so have  my fans Smiley

I'd just like to take the time to say Thanks for organizing this contest, its really fun.  Also as bitcoin crack addicts as most are, speculating about difficulty and mining is quite satisfying.

I agree thanks for keeping it going Phil, it is one of my favorite threads speculating on difficulty.  And thanks also to original donor.

Bitwisdom appears to be stuck which stinks, as I normally enjoy watching it.   Were starting this period with BTC value around 392, would be nice to hit 400 by end.  Don't know if it will happen but I hope so.
