2581  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DARKCOIN BIG SCAM?? let's take a closer look on: April 06, 2014, 07:39:10 PM

LOL this thread is not about the early prices of darkcoin, let him make another thread about the early prices if he likes. It has no bearing on the instamine we are discussing.

The thread must not get derailed simple as that.

If you post again make sure you have something factual to add to the discussion or make your own thread.

The point he was making was, even if you felt the instamine was unfair, there still was a great opportunity to buy the coins at an insanely cheap price. So in reality, the instamine didn't hurt anyone's chances of getting the coin. To me, that is a valid point, and shouldn't have been deleted. It wasn't derailing the thread at all and was on-topic -- unless you just want threads agreeing with you all the time, that is.

You can say that instamines are unfair, I get that. I won't even disagree, if the dev goes crazy with it. But I think most people in the DRK thread already know about the instamine, so it's not like something new that has just been uncovered. Personally, a small amount of instamine doesn't even bother me, as unlike a lot of people here, I feel a dev should be rewarded for his work. Whether DRK's instamine qualifies as a 'small amount' is certainly up for debate though... I expect it's a bit more than 'small'. I certainly wouldn't call it a scam though.

Wow, I just read a great response from someone about early prices of the coin, very detailed and fair, yet see it was deleted. I half expect my post to get deleted now.

If you want to do a self-moderated thread, and do it right, you need to do it like how BCX handled his AUR threads. Allow dissenting opinions, allow people to say what they want, just remove obvious troll posts. Yet you seem to be removing any post you don't agree with, or those that don't fit into your agenda. It makes threads like this worthless.

2583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is ANY coin even Attempting Mass Adoption, Seriously!!!! on: April 06, 2014, 07:13:30 PM
I think Noblecoin is, Dogecoin is kinda already there,  Bitcoin is on the edge of mass adoption, etc.... Most of them IMO just wanna coast of the success of BTC and profit from the developer. Mintcoin has plenty of Media Coverage, and so does ECCcoin. Litecoin, not so much IMO.
Sort of agree, although not sure how much media coverage mintcoin/ecccoin has gotten.

Dogecoin, for being a joke, has been doing surprisingly well as a potential currency. And by that I mean, an internet tipping currency. It's a smart niche to go after.

NobleCoin has their marketplace, which may end up doing better than the coin itself. Once they get gold/silver sales going, it'll be an easy way to cash out coins for something tangible. They already sort of have that with their Amazon card sales, which if you are like me, is sort of close to cash anyway. I am not sure I'd call it mass adoption, but at least it's turning their coin into an actual currency.

Bitcoin does have Overstock, Tiger Direct and a couple of other places. But I do wonder if it'll ever get mass adoption, as it's sooooo slow to use as a currency. There is very little benefit to the average consumer over simply using their credit card.

Everything else... nah, not really. You can argue that perhaps AUR is trying for mass adoption in Iceland, or some coins have plans to be used as a currency ... but they aren't doing a particularly great job of it. Way too many coins simply seem to exist for exchanges, or as a 'joke' or some other reason. I remember when that Air coin came out, and it seemed like its sole purpose was to sort of influence exchange prices (which it failed at pretty miserably), but there wasn't much talk of how it would be adopted by anyone for actual use. It's way too common to see coins have no actual purpose, and not even have a planned purpose in the future.

So is AP still with the coin, or no? I though after the MapleCoin fiasco, AP was out then. But evidently not.

And does 'DataMan' actually mean anything? I mean, is it a dev people here know about? It'd be really unique for a change if a dev used his real name, instead of some handle that sounds like it belongs to a 14 year old.
2585  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN][QBC] Québecoin - Best X11 Nation Coin - DarkGravityWave – 0.5% IPO on: April 05, 2014, 08:49:55 PM

We have social security numbers here, you don't give those to anyone because you'd risk identity fraud the same as in the US. Health insurance cards are unique but not sensitive information. Verifying them could be done in various ways such as simply having them scanned and submitted.

There's a post a bit earlier that I made mentioning the technology adoption cycle. It's useless to give everyone in Québec some coins, even a smaller amount. It will still be mostly the same people getting them (the early adopters) and that's why targeted giveaways are a smarter way to go about it.

As for distribution, you may be right. Although I think distribution is up to around 8-9% in Iceland and there are reports of people using the coins already to buy stuff. If the news gets out, it'd be more than just early adopters claiming coins. But it could just be Iceland was a fluke there... they did get a lot of press,  nationally.

The scan/submit thing I assumed is what you meant for the cards. But my question is, how will you know the card and number is actually valid? It's like... pretend I was a dev in the US and accepted driver licenses from a specific state only. It's not hard at all for someone to just grab an image off the internet, do a bit of photoshop, stick some numbers in .. and I'm a citizen from wherever.

Is there a way for you to verify if a number is a real number or if someone is faking their ID?
2586  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN][QBC] Québecoin - Best X11 Nation Coin - DarkGravityWave – 0.5% IPO on: April 05, 2014, 08:30:08 PM
Although I wouldn't be worried about people stealing health insurance, since it is free, I was wondering more in regard to identity fraud there. Again, I am not sure how common it is for people to share their numbers or not. If it was like a social security number here in the US, it's certainly not something to freely give out. But if everyone just shares their numbers already, then it does seem safe.

Again though, how will you verify it's a real number? Or a real card?

And as far as the giveaway, I didn't mean the entire giveaway all at once, just a small amount, but to everyone in Quebec. Realistically only a small percentage would claim it anyway.

It's a bit of the chicken and egg thing... nobody knows about the coin, so it makes no sense to give it away at first. But by not giving it away, nobody knows about the coin...
2587  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN][QBC] Québecoin - Best X11 Nation Coin - DarkGravityWave – 0.5% IPO on: April 05, 2014, 07:59:26 PM

I can confirm that our health insurance card is commonly used for identification here in Québec. Honestly, I'm not really worried about identifying Quebecers.

It might work then. And health insurance there is very different than in the US, so it may be much safer. Although I do wonder how the dev will know if a health insurance card number is valid or not.

I initially thought that mazatalk was the new official website. It really should be.

I just checked the new site and my first thought was... wtf?

Overlooking the amateur nature of the site to begin with, who really thinks having a pirate logo with a guy fawkes mask is a good thing on the front page? There are concerns over  the dev dumping the premine as it is. So yeah.. a pirate is the message you really want to send out there. Might as well just have a logo of a guy with a striped prison suit and giant bags of cash in his hand. And put it right on the FRONT PAGE.

It's idiotic. It also doesn't exactly scream professionalism when I click on that little pirate logo, and it goes to a web template page with sofas, tables and chairs.

Hmm... I'm not aware if health insurance numbers in Canada is sensitive info or not. I just know in the US, I probably wouldn't want to go around giving my health insurance number out. I'd expect to find myself with a dozen prescriptions charged to me, and weird doctor bills showing up.

The small distribution to select groups may help, but I still think a small distribution to everyone in Quebec would help more so. The thing is, the logical danger of a big airdrop all at once is that people cash them out. Yet if you go with a smallish amount to everyone, there isn't nearly as big a danger. And you get the benefits of more publicity and possibly quicker adoption. Give someone $100 worth of coins and they will cash out. Give someone $5-$10 worth of coins, and they probably just hold onto them, or consider how they can be used for something.

Quote
Recent airdrops have shown miners, investors and airdrop receivers that the value of the coin tends to drop sharply when it is 'dropped'. The coin is basically a newborn and they put it in the streets where it's not ready to face the world. Québecoin will be the first country-coin with a delayed distribution period. We will distribute one fifth of the premine at every block reward halving (2 years), which means it will take place 5 times in 10 years. This allows QBC to grow naturally at a steady rate and be adopted by the population of Québec on a voluntary basis. This also means that miners and investors won't be facing artificial drops in value. We think it's a win-win all around.

I have a couple of airdrop questions, which may have been answered already and I missed it... so apologies if it's a repeat question.

Have you mentioned how you will actually do the airdrop? Some automated ID system/check type of system? Manually checking each ID (which I would think impossible)? Facebook/social media verification? Something else?

Having a 3rd party hold the premine would help a lot to assuage fears, but I definitely wouldn't trust anyone upon this site, hero members, even those in good standing, to be that 3rd party. The bank idea could work possibly, although there is no real way for anyone to verify the bank is holding the cold wallets (that I know of, anyway).

I do disagree with the payout rate, but that is of course your call. Will there be at least one initial small airdrop, before the 2 year delay, or is it nothing at all for 2 years? Slow distribution makes sense, but if too slow, you really run the risk of the coin dying before anyone gets it. Then the fears of a dumped premine become even greater. If it was me, I'd go with an initial airdrop, then 6 month intervals, until it's used up. If you plan 5 airdrops, that gets you to 2.5 years. You could also do more than 5 drops, and spread it out a bit more. Crypto time is like dog years ... 2.5 years is like 10+ years for most other things.

By doing some type of airdrop initially, you also help the coin in another way ... trust. People can then see you can actually pull of the drop, and gauge local interest in the coin. It also helps with news coverage, as it may not be quite as popular news-wise (or with people) to have a regional crypto giveaway that takes place 2 years from now.

2593  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MandarinCoin potential? on: April 03, 2014, 09:48:16 PM
I assumed this coin was an April Fool's joke. If real... well, if it's hard to tell if a coin is real or a joke, it's probably not a coin worth putting money into.

The ann alone is enough to scare people away. They literally copied the first paragraph of GreeceCoin's ann, and just substituted the word 'China' in for 'Greece'.
2594  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [CONTEST] Win .5 BTC (IPO) by suggest us a good coin name for the Munich Project on: April 03, 2014, 09:35:05 PM
HybridCoin
SafeCoin
FastNode
Darwin
CloudCoin

Tried to pick names at least semi-related to the coin's features ... not sure if any have been taken already or not. Included Darwin simply because eventually this will all be survival of the fittest (coins), anyway -- it's just a matter of time.

So after CNN 4 digits price I think and high hope that Mazacoin will stay in 4 digits.

Don't get your hopes up, it may rise during the coverage, but it will most likely decline shortly after. There is a lot of FUD with bitcoin and crypto currency in general right now. I do think mzc is going to be worthwhile andsignificantly rise in value, but unfortunately it is going to be a very long drawn out process. I personally don't think that a little coverage from CNN is going to raise the value of mza permanently. I'm thinking about, aside from what I'm currently holding, buying more maza at a low before the coverage, waiting for a spike in value duing the coverage, then selling.

Yep. I would expect the price to rise, but I am not even sure it'd reach 4 digits. It may be similar to that al jazeer pump ... it should go somewhat higher than it is now (which isn't saying much), but not enough where big bag holders would want to sell off. And really doubtful the price remains high, unless Payu gets that signed paper.

If it goes up again, I'll probably sell off too. I'm more of an accidental holder at this point, as I used maza to get out of cryptorush ... and the high price, and really, really slow withdrawal, resulted in a situation of taking a loss if I sold now. It's not much anyway, so no biggie, but might as well hold it for now.
2596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN][QBC] Québecoin - A currency for the Québec nation - X11 - DGW – IPO on: April 03, 2014, 07:36:34 PM

So I'll definitely post a cloud mining guide or create a linux image you can use to mine in the first pool which will be supplied by the great #Suchpool.

I go the cheap route and tend to use free cloudmining trials for these sorts of things. Azure is probably the best, but doubtful I can do that one again. I was getting pretty good numbers on DarkCoin with it, using 8, 8 and 4 cores... but then they went GPU and killed it.

If you put up a guide, I may hunt around and see if I can find any trials that last a couple of days, and give it a shot and see how it does. For free, I wouldn't expect much anyway ... just wondering if it'd even be worth the time trying.
2597  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why me and a bunch of others believe in Auroracoin on: April 03, 2014, 07:23:25 PM

But, why not just adopt a crypto currency that is strong, like Bitcoin?  It has to the power to resist attack, whereas fledgling currencies do not.  It has the support, the infrastructure, and it is more universally accepted.

If people as a whole insist on using a method of value transfer, then all parties involved will adapt.

As already stated, Iceland has some laws against bitcoin already. Although the govt. could eventually come up with the same laws against AUR. But it does make sense as to why bitcoin wouldn't be adopted or used initially.

I may be in the minority, but it sort of baffles me as to why anyone thinks bitcoin will really be adopted widespread as a currency anyway. As a commodity, yes, possibly. But as a currency, it's so insanely slow.

I don't think AUR will ultimately succeed vs bitcoin, but no real harm if the OP is simply hedging his bets and using a bit of his profit to buy some AUR at its current price. I certainly wouldn't go all-in on it though.
2598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: **MUST READ** NobleCoin Founder addresses "The State of Alt Cryptocurrency." on: April 03, 2014, 07:09:31 PM
Good document overall. I spotted a couple of typos and such, but overall it was a nice job.

I have a small amount of Noble, but don't really have high hopes it'll ever amount to much. Strangely I see the Noble Marketplace doing a lot better than the coin will.

I'm actually CPU mining since X11 is quite good for that, I don't have an elaborate GPU mining setup (yet).

Will CPU mining QBC result in reasonable amounts of coins, you think?

If so, maybe put up a cloud mining guide? My PC is an absolute wimp ... only way I've ever mined anything was using cloud mining. Although I think I've run out of most of the free trials to use up...
2600  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: MapleCoin To Launch March 22nd on: April 03, 2014, 05:45:50 PM

understood -- and BTW these nation coins (I mean those that usually come as "countryName" plus "coin") are some of the dumbest ideas in the entire Crypto space anyway, defying the entire concept of what DECENTRALIZED p2p Crypto coins or wider "Bitcoin Neutrality" should be.

Greececoin, Australiacoin, Germanycoin, Nigeriacoin, Spaincoin, BullCityCoin and even EuroCoin, MeditarraneanCoin and Auroracoin (the row of idiocities is endless) -- they all failed to get the first thing/basic concept of real Cryptos (even if they claim they were supposedly "open" to "outsiders" which they are not really), namely that they can only succeed if used internationally. Focusing on ANY geographic area preempts the whole BTC concept (as well as the one of viable Altcoins) though!

Let them all fail as miserably as they deserve, this is what *competition among currencies* is all about. Let the free market decide -- and soon (for the sake of saving unnecessary hashing power and tons of CO2 and electricity wasted)...

I'm not very fond of most nation coins either. I expect it all will burn out eventually, or perhaps they have already. That said, there could be some valid reasons for a geographical region to support their own coin.
Maza is one example, due to possible govt. interference with indians adopting bitcoin. Same for Iceland, if I recall correctly... although of course all it would take is for their govt. to regulate AUR, to put it in the same boat as bitcoin.

Most other 'nations'... nah... there could be perceived reasons for a specific coin, such as that dutch coin playing on sentimentality, or greececoin helping poor people, but in reality I don't think either will work out. And in the latter case, it is more of a made up reason from the devs to just make money. I wouldn't be surprised to see duplicate nation coins next, once all the popular nations are used up. Hopefully this whole thing dies off before it comes to that though.

Edit: And just now I see another Gulden coin is being released, making it two Dutch coins. It evidently has begun already.
