261  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WOW! BFL is refusing full bitcoin refunds! on: January 18, 2013, 12:31:51 PM
I don't use BitPay.

You'll find that the address you sent coins to was associated with a private key held by BitPay, no?
262  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WOW! BFL is refusing full bitcoin refunds! on: January 18, 2013, 12:28:09 PM
Really? Where? Where does the law say that you can repay a 1000 dollar debt with a 10 dollar bill?

Lol. That's dollars and dollars.
263  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: LiL Help on BFL SINGLES - UPGRADING TO ASIC - MARCH DEADLINE on: January 18, 2013, 12:19:22 PM
I saved some money and was able to come up around $4k in Late November...

Why not spend $26K more and upgrade to a Schmock?

Liars? Did they say "we will bring a completed mini rig and demonstrate it hashing at CES"?
264  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Development Status [Batch #1] on: January 18, 2013, 10:11:40 AM
.. except they've skipped a big item that they said they would do ...
Demo.

Yep. I'm only holding them to their own terms.
265  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Development Status [Batch #1] on: January 18, 2013, 02:00:11 AM
This point has been made before, but if Avalon is not trying to get people to send them money, there is not a real good reason to expend a lot of effort on proving that they actually have something.

Actually, I would say that it's an excellent reason. It would demonstrate that they actually care about keeping their existing customers well informed - every bit of positive news from BFL/bASIC is aimed at least partially at getting more pre orders.

Unfortunately, they have given up this opportunity.
266  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WOW! BFL is refusing full bitcoin refunds! on: January 18, 2013, 01:52:54 AM
Bitcoin/$ price rise after I have published this thread proves what needs to be proved!

Why do you say that?
267  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WOW! BFL is refusing full bitcoin refunds! on: January 18, 2013, 01:51:53 AM
OMFG JFC STFU already, six pages of this garbage, in addition to the pages strewn through the other threads.

At least we can hope that all dead-horse beating moves to this thread. Then we can simply ignore this thread.
268  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The First Law of ASICS on: January 18, 2013, 01:36:54 AM
Based upon the assumption that the manufacturer will always do what is in its best economic interest.

Your assumption assumes the following:

  • The manufacturer is actually able to map out all possible consequences of its own actions and outside events to determine what is in its best economic interest
  • There is nothing else influencing the behaviour of the manufacturer

In short, you're assuming that the manufacturer functions like a superintelligent machine with no values or principles other than "optimise for maximum profits". In practice, this is not true, which is why almost every "law of X" turns out to be a "rough guideline of X" at best.
269  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: It looks like BFL is screwing everyone over! on: January 17, 2013, 01:25:16 PM
JOSH being a scummy fuck.

Why do you think that?
270  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: It looks like BFL is screwing everyone over! on: January 17, 2013, 01:22:36 PM
So I have to go with the evidence. And that's Bryans version.

The only real "evidence" we have is the contents of the video.

Sharp cut to BFL's table. He introduces himself, he asks what the box is, and you'll notice that Josh doesn't then say "it's the mini rig case". He pauses, clearly bothered by something...why would someone get confused or annoyed over a question about a product they are showing off? Within 20 seconds of Bryan appearing, he's already clearly annoyed. Why would this be?

Here's a theory:

Quote from: possibly Josh's brain
Oh fuck, it's that guy from yesterday. WTF is he doing here again? I'll try to be civil...
...
Why the fuck is he asking about the box AGAIN? I've had enough of this...ENTERING RAGE MODE.

That would explain Josh's behavior, more or less.

Here's Bryan's apparent explanation:

Quote from: probably not Josh's brain
SOMEONE'S ASKING ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS
FUCK HIM
FUCK ALL THE CUSTOMERS
HOW DARE HE, I BETTER CALL HIM STUPID...THAT'LL MAKE HIM ORDER FOR SURE

That...doesn't seem very likely, does it?

Ironically, Bryan's video heavily supports what Josh has said.

TL;DR Josh was the one being unprofessional, but Micon was the one who was being an idiot and a tard.

I agree with this analysis.
271  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 253 BTC Bet that Butterfly Labs will Not Deliver an ASIC Prior to March 1st on: January 17, 2013, 12:58:23 PM
So the real question is, does anyone think that the rigs will be within the +/-10% specs of the bet?  Grin

It's pretty easy to overshoot the power usage by 10%...that bet allows them to ship best-in-class ASICs and still lose!
272  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Development Status [Batch #1] on: January 17, 2013, 12:53:32 PM
Back to the topic;we have  3 days to go for the shipping to occur. I would wager that most people are currently on the fence to see where they'll put their money now. Expect a massive wave of requests for refunds at BFL if Avalon pulls through....

Personally, I wouldn't want a refund unless Avalon's second batch is somehow going to beat BFL's first...and if they can somehow get the power usage down.

I'm somewhat confused by why they aren't showing off shiny ASICs right now.

So i think it is pretty obvious now that there are NO Engineers or work being done by BFL

1)They have outsourced the lot
2) Their key role is purely Sales
3) Maybe some assembly but thats it!

I don't quite understand your point. When you need (more) engineering expertise, but you don't need any (more) full time engineers, you...outsource.

Is there something wrong with that?

Quite a few months ago, I started down the path of creating a custom ASIC with another member of this forum.  We spoke with a number of companies that do structured ASIC designs but ultimately decided to go with a full custom ASIC design since it seemed like it would required to be competitive with the numbers being promised by the competition.  Ultimately, we entered into discussions with a company in Shanghai that does ASIC design with the intent of having them do the entire ASIC design for us.  Like BFL, we already had a working HDL design that we had verified on FPGA hardware.  Ultimately we chose not to move forward with the venture for business reasons, but it looks like BFL is on a similar path to what we were on.

Based on what I've been reading, it seems that BFL does not have in-house ASIC engineering experience (neither did we), but rather they have opted to farm out their design to a company experienced in these matters (a very positive thing IMO).  Silicon Valley probably has the highest concentration of ASIC design houses in the US, so it is encouraging to read that Josh is going there next week to meet with their ASIC design team.  Using an experienced ASIC design team in combination with a straightforward logic-only design like SHA256 and a conservative 65nm process is a good formula for minimizing risk and the number of respins.

I'm out of the mining business at the moment, but if I wanted to get back in now, I'd probably choose BFL based on the information currently available.

I have no affiliation with BFL or any of it's employees.

Agreed.

What a great and positive response sir. Your grasp of the English language is both elegant and substantial!

I aim to please BFL
276  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC not shipping / change of owership / refunds etc. on: January 16, 2013, 01:53:10 PM
Still hoping that they reach a buyout deal. We really need 3+ active vendors in order to push prices down once the development has been paid off.
277  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Days left in your CC chargeback window? on: January 16, 2013, 01:50:23 PM
I have heard of several individuals who have cancelled their preorders already. More delays = more cancellations = less funds for BFL to finish their "product" with.

Where is the evidence that they are spending/have spent pre order money on development?
278  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Purchasing bitcoin ASICs - The Manual on: January 16, 2013, 01:48:45 PM
Your steps are too complicated.

1. Wait until they have stock
2. Order

I would suggest you do better, if you really think that post deserves another response than mine give it a try. Smiley

Okay.
