262  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Instawallet claim process on: May 11, 2013, 10:46:27 AM
But I wasn't able to make a claim yet since my first deposit happend quite late (April 3th) and my wallet isn't showing up anymore. I still don't get this takes so long. When bitcoin-24 went down, people were able to transfer their BC after 3 weeks.
at least, bitcoin-24 was relatively sure they where not hacked and all usernames+passwords in the public.
the methodology of refunds is ok-ish because wallets with a single claim will be easy to identify.

instawallets above 50 are hopefully rare and it would be very concerning if there are people who are losing a big chunk of money. it is like our little cyprus..

266  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Will the new dust rule 0.8.2 make it trivial to double spend 0-conf? on: May 06, 2013, 04:05:04 PM
in my understanding the fee/dust setting will be configurable by users and miners.
so from the outside it is not obvious if a miner will treat a transaction as nonstandard or not.

how exactly is a merchant supposed to find out about a TX that is non-standard to SOME nodes that may be conflicting with his freshly-received transaction? - this question applies to other forms of nonstandard tx as well.

if the transaction is non-standard to ALL nodes the problem is not as severe, because the probability of a miner including it in the next block is within manageable limits.
267  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Will the new dust rule 0.8.2 make it trivial to double spend 0-conf? on: May 06, 2013, 03:10:17 PM
lets assume the following scenario:

attacker connects to all miners directly.
constructs transaction with very healthy fee (0.01 btc) and 1 dust input + multiple fat inputs. outputs all back to him.
now he sends those directly to all miners. they may or may not relay it. but they will propably accept it to their memory pool to collect the fee on the next block.

now Mr. Attacker goes and pays at a merchant or digital download / vending machine.
-------
the merchants sees the 0-conf TX and thinks it is ok. but in fact the inputs are conflicting with the 1st transaction.
previously this fact would be known quite fast because the original transaction would have flooded the network already and all merchants would have rejected it instantly. but now, he has no way of knowing that the conflicting transaction is already sitting in all miners memorypools and on the next block he will have a bad surprise!

271  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: It is illegal to spend bitcoins in China on: May 05, 2013, 01:36:19 PM
yet, CCTV is bringing a long piece. if it was considered illegal they would have mentioned this.

in fact - from a strategic prespective china should love to have a strong bitcoin. if chinese manufacturers would stop piling up USD and get something of value instead like gold or bitcoin they could very slowly reduce the amount of T-Bills held. All their bilateral swap agreements aim towards that. their accumulation of gold aims towards that.

if i were a chinese official looking at bitcoin, i would promote it for international trade very gently to bring it slowly to a state where it helps them with their exports.
272  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: fake client on sourceforge under gavinadressen? on: May 05, 2013, 12:25:04 PM
Gavin also has 1 "s" in his last name. this name "gavinadressen" looks suspicious.

275  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Wallet.is a service striving to succeed where instawallet has failed on: May 04, 2013, 01:43:13 PM

apetersson, I think that having privkey in the url creates more issues than it solves (it does not solve the trust issue itself, and may create additional nasty edge cases)

please explain to me what these edge cases are.

if the secret part of the url can leak, it is certainly equally bad as an attacker can empty the wallet.

by not keeping the actual private keys on your server only in memory for a short amount of time you avoid many hacking problems.
276  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Report Volume 46 (Coinlab vs Gox) on: May 04, 2013, 11:00:13 AM
i think you are confusing it with

http://www.thebitcoinchannel.com/

in BJF land it is always "The" Bitcoin.
277  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin-qt: how to check my passphrase without transferring money on: May 03, 2013, 07:21:06 AM
when using "sign message" you are prompted for the password. also if you create a new address.

if you just want to check if you still know it these options are most simple.

apparently, if you don't hold it you don't own it is true for servers as well Sad
280  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Galileo - Bitcoin Beitrag on: April 23, 2013, 10:46:14 PM
meine persönliche zusammenfassung:

es steigt der wert.
klas kauft 50 bitcoins.
inflationssicher. nicht wie der euro.
mining mit notebooks nichtmehr möglich.
gewinn. steigt rasant an. mehr als 20x
pizza.
room 77. ersparnis gegenüber kreditkarten.
klas wird vielleicht sogar selbst noch reich.
steigt konstant an. aber klas legt noch nicht seine ganzen ersparnisse
hinein.

vielleicht hätte man die worte "experimentell", "beta", "unsicher"
häufiger verwenden sollen. Cheesy
