261  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: FPGA & Raspberry Pi? on: April 22, 2012, 10:22:17 PM
Yes Smiley That's what I plan on doing when my RPi gets delivered in May.

See this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=55532.0

100% BAMT.

It's basically plug-n-play
263  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BFL Single Order Date/Ship Date on: April 20, 2012, 12:36:36 PM
The speeding up of the shipping times getting through January orders is encouraging but the thing that bothers me is the orders for 10/20 and even 50 in quantity.

How long will those take to clear? Have they even shipped like more than 100 units in total?

This is the main thing stopping me from ordering right now.

Well I ordered mine last month figuring that the wait will not get any shorter for these things in the near future. (Unless BTC market crashes).

True. I can always cancel if the wait becomes too long I guess.... I think?

I was hoping they were getting ontop of the backlog by now though after seeing that flurry of january orders go out

Anyone ordering some of the new quad boards in the UK? (PM me.)

266  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ZTEX Quad Power Adapter Alternatives in the UK? on: April 19, 2012, 10:26:33 AM
You don't need a center pin ! The center pin is on the other side of the connector. Every 5.5, 2.1 plug will work.
Oh... Really? 0.o

It makes a lot more sense now then.
Thanks!
267  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ZTEX Quad Power Adapter Alternatives in the UK? on: April 19, 2012, 10:11:28 AM
no need for a power jack

Quote
CON2 is a pluggable terminal. The two outer contacts are GND (-) and the inner contact is the supply voltage (+). This connector is designed for large currents and should therefore be preferred. The terminal block is deleivered with the board.

Isn't this only for use with an PC ATX power supply though? I was hoping to get a standalone power adapter.
268  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ZTEX Quad Power Adapter Alternatives in the UK? on: April 19, 2012, 10:03:27 AM
Anyone know what power adapters will be compatible with the new Quad boards?

I don't really want to spend like £30 on a power supply.

Any regulated 12V DC supply that supplies at least 3.5 Amps.
Some old netbooks have exactly such a power supply.
Or take an old PC power supply.

Yeah thanks for requoting what I've already read.

I'm having a hard time finding one with the right connector hence this thread.
269  Bitcoin / Hardware / ZTEX Quad Power Adapter Alternatives in the UK? on: April 19, 2012, 09:28:05 AM
I'm looking for a power adapter for the ZTEX Quad which I can purchase in the UK.

The most likely suspects at the moment appear to be laptop chargers, but most of these don't have the central pin in the barrel.

The specs required (as far as I'm aware) are:

DC Power Jack
12V 5A (60W)
2.1mm center pin (positive)
5.5mm diameter barrel (negative)

Link to quad specification: http://www.ztex.de/usb-fpga-1/usb-fpga-1.15y.e.html#con2

CON3 is a standard DC power jack with 2.1mm center pin (+) diameter and 5.5mm barrel (-) diameter for a supply voltage of 4.5 V to 16 V.

Searching eBay for "12V 5A 5.5 2.1" shows some possible candidates but none of them have the center pin.

Any help is appreciated.

Hopefully this post will help others in the UK in future also.

270  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin fail when the block reward drops to 25BTC? on: April 19, 2012, 08:20:13 AM
Very good analogy! I like analogies Tongue

Don't discount the composition of that hashing power though.  Individuals mining today on their gaming rigs are getting squeezed out by difficulty increases versus a stable exchange rate.  They aren't going to be buying FPGAs so the operators of these larger GPU farm ops and 25 ghash/s mini-rigs will representing a greater and greater share of the hashing.

It would take a drop of something like 95% or a rise of something like 5000% to materially change the strength of the network.

That's the key point.  It like having the equivalent armed snipers every ten feet around a Fort Knox protecting only a few bags of pennies, nickels and dimes located inside.  Send half of them home and the pennies aren't left any less secure than before.

also, we should all probably just put cunicula on ignore because all we're doing is bumping this FUDlicious thread.

I agree. My OP was definitely FUD. But I'm not trying to trick anyone. I just wanted other people's opinions and theories.

All anyone ever does in this Speculation sub-forum is shout "FUD FUD FUD!"... It's why I usually don't bother reading it.
273  Economy / Speculation / Will Bitcoin fail when the block reward drops to 25BTC? on: April 18, 2012, 11:32:27 AM
Bitcoin block reward drops to 25BTC.

Most people appear to be mining/trading Bitcoin purely for profit.

Most of the hashrate is lost due to GPU miners becoming unprofitable as the price does not double, but only increases 25% or so.

Only FPGA miners and hobbyists securing the network.

This makes the 51% attack much more probable.

51% attack takes place and much trust is lost in Bitcoin.

The end?
274  Economy / Trading Discussion / Can anyone recommend a trusted BTC escrow service? on: April 18, 2012, 09:18:32 AM
Can anyone recommend a trusted and reliable BTC escrow service?

The only two I know of are BTCrow (which just went down recently and came back up, so it doesn't seem very reliable)

and ThruCoin, which I don't really know anything about. The website is very basic and I can't find any reviews of it.

Thanks.

Any estimates on a release date when I'll be able to order a quad FPGA board?
276  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: New Mining Company (PanCake Mining) on: April 17, 2012, 11:17:09 AM
One question...

Quote
following Christmas of 2011 I finally got up the confidence to send $10 through Dwolla then to Mt.Gox

Quote
Between the months of January to April, I sent a total of about $1,500 which let me say was hard earned money

How come it was so hard for you to deposit $10 on Mt. Gox, but you can send $1,500 no problem like a month later?

Also you're gonna need a lot more than 1 BFL single to start a mining company.

Good luck to you though
277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Clubs in Schools on: April 15, 2012, 12:17:11 PM
Bitcoin is in a far too early stage to have such clubs.

IMO The client(s) needs a lot more refinement (AKA reaching version 1 to start with) before such clubs should even be considered.

And since most people have never heard of Bitcoin, the students (and parents) will probably see it as a waste of time unfortunately. But I do think Bitcoin certainly deserves a spot amongst some Economics and Networking/Computer Science lectures which would open up some more discussion.

Another point would be what age group you are referring to?
278  Other / Off-topic / Re: I visited BFL, any questions ? on: April 11, 2012, 11:18:48 AM
That was really a good idea. I thought about that myself but I don't have time to travel right now.

Here are a couple of questions:

What is their place of business (address) and what are their real names?

- You can ask them that, their identities or address is not secret , I just visited them Smiley

Why all the secrecy about who they are and where they are?

- what secrecy ?

Which FPGA chip are they using?

- They use their own chip, not any chip from the shelves

Why do they keep telling 6-8 weeks while they must clearly know they can't pull it off by now? It's been 6 months they have been claiming 6-8 weeks.

- I cannot answer this question, hell I am not sure if it is a question either.

Did you meet the main engineer with the funny accent or just Sonny?

- I met sonny and talked with the engineer

Are they really building them there one by one in their office?

- No comment on that but they are building them allright

What's with all the fake information about making medical devices?

- ?? I am buying the rigs for bitcoin I dont care about medical imaging or otherwise, that information can be real or fake I don't care

I suppose the "the lady" in the picture is an employee of their assembling/prototyping house, not their own employee. Do they actually have any employees?

- Yes they do

Why did their company incorporator/registered agent deny any connection with these guys and resign in January?

- I have no idea

Why are they coming up with products that only exist in their imagination (Rig Box, Mini Rig Box) and take payments for it? Only to find out later that what they thought was possible does already fail with the basics (powering 2500 Watt, cooling 2500 Watt, etc).

- Implementing a real life product and planning it on paper is two very different things, timeframe is very narrow here , they are trying to complete a 2 year design job in 6 months , I think they are doing just fine

What are they doing different than others to come up with nearly twice the hashing power per chip?

- I dont care , what they are doing to do it, but it does the job

Where do I go if I send them my $15k and they disappear overnight?

- I've already sent them way more than 15k they are still there

As you can see, my confidence is very low right now. But if anybody convinces me otherwise, sending money to BFL is back on the table.

- It is in my advantage if you do not buy rigboxes Smiley , I'll get more profit

Now one question for you personally:

What makes you think that you will be better off with a couple of Mini Rigs than your own FPGA cluster? Surely it must be possible to build your own FPGA cluster in the same time frame for the same amount of money. Did you speak to the other FPGA board vendors?

- Yes I did, I can actually build a FPGA cluster on my own, spending the same time and money, I cannot have a better result for the same amount of money so I'm going with them

No offense but for someone who's visited them, you don't appear to know much. All of your answers are very generic.

I have doubts that this other engineer even exists personally.
From what I've heard/seen BFL could just consist of Sonny and his mother.
Maybe that's why they take forever to reply to emails or fulfil orders?

Watching this thread.

I'd like to know more about the production ramp up of the Singles if possible.
