I'd say ask your vet, they should know about the fowl in your area.

Yeah, I will definitely be asking, he is due to go for his checkup in about a month so I will definitely mention it then.  He seems totally fine, yesterday he paraded around with one and showed everybody and this isn't the first time I caught him with one..  Maybe my dog food bills will go down?   We always ask him to pay rent, this could be his way of contributing..   Tongue

BTW, the chicken bone thing only applies to COOKED chicken bones. Otherwise, how would any wild animal eat a chicken? Wink
Uncooked bones pose no threat.

Ah no kidding eh, that makes sense.
265  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dogs eating birds on: July 18, 2012, 05:09:10 PM
Bird bones could splinter in the dogs throat.  I know wolves and wild dogs would eat birds but there is a general rule not to feed dogs chicken bones.  So I guess that goes for all bird bones?

A general rule yeah..  I definitely heard of chicken bones doing that, had a couple scares with my dogs when I was a kid getting into chicken bones..  but those were just little dogs .. I am not so sure it applies to bigger animals like this guy.  He isn't even full grown yet but I am pretty sure he could eat a full raw chicken, bones and all in one sitting.. heh.   What worries me most is the "city birds"  thing... who the hell knows what they end up eating.  I figure this is fairly common, I mean we didn't teach him to catch birds or anything he is just interested in them naturally..

Just wondering if anyone has a dog that's been doing this for years or some similar situation and has any insight or experience with it.

No. A judicial overseer would first secure all assets. That might mean immediately converting all BTC to $ and putting it into a safe bank. Since the appointed overseer can be held responsible for some losses accrued during his reign, you can bet he will play it safe.
He can (and should) rather put them into cold storage. These are deposits of Bitcoinica's customers, noone should have an authority to sell them.

Only if he understands bitcoin, which is unlikely. He has to prevent further losses foremost. He has the authority to sell off and close customers positions if that's in their best interest long term, and it is better than getting more assets stolen. I assume much of the details here depend a lot on the jurisdiction this will end in.

there is almost no way that if this goes into the hands of a 3rd party with some type of official / legal obligation such as a receiver or such that any assets will remain in bitcoin unfortunately...

@genjix : cant you at least refund 50% to all the claim that have been marked as accurate ?

Those big accounts that want to sue, I bet they sure would love their 50% back.  I know I would.     "More is lost to indecision than a bad decision."   sure seems to be ringing true here..

What's your experience with Dog's eating birds (maybe somewhat regularly).  I have a 15 month old Mastweiller (mastiff / rotti cross) who is generally a good dog and super playful, actually the best puppy I ever had.

He keeps hunting birds and eating them.  It doesn't bother me too much.. I mean he's 110 pounds, if he wants to eat a bird all the power to him.  But I wonder if it is ok for him to be regularly eating birds, we do live in the city, so these aren't country birds.  Who knows what they get into in the city / what the birds are eating.

I mean I can't watch the dog all the time and he spends a good chunk of his days outside unsupervised especially in the summer, so I doubt I could ever stop the bird eating, but maybe someone out there has some insight ?

Also I really hope someone has told the big guy about current security SOP for bringing laptops and phone in and out of china.

Curious about this.. what is the current security SOP for bringing laptops and phones in and out of china?

Don't bring any laptop or phone that has or had any trade secrets or anything of value on it.
Most current SOP is to only use laptop and phones purchased for the purpose of taking to china(IE CLEAN), after coming back getting rid of them.

there have so many reports of people coming back with NEW firmware IE(RootKits) and other great software add-on's.

Its a current industry theory that if someone in customs takes your laptop out of your view your already infected.

Just saw a nice stat today saying that china has backdoor access to 80% of the worlds telephone systems now thanks to two big Chinese telecom companies.

Anyone hear about the plotter(Big Printer) that had its software changed so it forwarded all blueprints that it printed out to china.

 Grin

Next time I go I'm taking an ultrabook with all the ports epoxied shut with a drive encrypted with AES-Twofish-Serpent.
After you start raising flags at customs, we get a special detail that follows you the entire trip.
Then you start doing fun stuff like talking to trash can's,dead dropping dollar bills at random places with special codes, watching the aftermath is always fun.

Interesting.. it sounds tinfoil hat, but it probably isn't :/

Yes the lack of 7950 results is due to fewer miners with them and none of the ones with them have contributed to the wiki.

Sapphire 7950 with a mild overlock does 500 MH ish.

What is this loan for? Where do the dividends come from? Etc.

Basically, the loan will be used to facilitate transactions in my businesses that may otherwise be too risky due to BTCUSD fluctuation.  This means that the exact uses of the funds will vary, but are guaranteed no matter what happens to them.  The dividends come from my existing businesses, but if TEEK.USD is successful it will allow me to make my existing business more efficient as well as make business more profitable and less risky overall.

Hi guys!  Another week of interest paid!

Have a new issue for you all to look at,  it may not be for everyone, but it is yet another very interesting experiment and might be something someone has been looking for!

TEEK.USD
-------------------

TEEK.USD is an interest bearing loan or bond pegged to USD.  Each bond has a face value of ONE UNITED STATES DOLLAR (USD) worth of Bitcoin at Mt. Gox's BTCUSD 24h weighted average rate.

This loan / bond guarantees no loss of principal to the bond holder, the risk is carried solely by the issuer, and it's face value does not fluctuate from $1.00 USD.

This loan / bond is pegged to USD but all transactions will take place in Bitcoin, at the Mt. Gox BTCUSD 24h weighted average rate, USD will be rounded to two decimal places, and BTC will be rounded to 8 decimal places.

A $0.01 USD (in bitcoin at the Mt. Gox BTCUSD 24h weighted average rate) interest payment will be paid to each bond every Sunday. You must hold the bond at the exact time of interest payment to be entitled to the interest.

For example:  For a weighted average of $7.53959  a rate of $7.54 would be used.  A interest payment of $0.01 USD @ BTCUSD rate of $7.54 would be,  1 / 7.54 = 0.13262599 BTC  x $0.01 USD = 0.00132626 BTC per bond.

A minimum liquidity level will be established. Each week, on the Sunday interest day, a bid of $1.00 USD per bond (in bitcoin at the Mt. Gox BTCUSD 24h weighted average rate) will be placed for a minimum of 5% of the outstanding bonds.

This loan / bond can be called at any time. If the loan / bond is called, the issuer will place a bid of $1.05 USD per bond (in bitcoin at the Mt. Gox BTCUSD 24h weighted average rate) for every outstanding bond. Interest for the weekly period will be paid out on a pro-rated basis.

278  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A public plea for help regarding Bitcoinica and my 24,841 BTC on: July 13, 2012, 11:20:08 PM
Even the whole idea that their backups are only useful for restoring the "entire cloud", I just don't buy that.  The news recently reported they hit 100k customers - let's say each customer has an average of 30 gigs of data.  Do they back up their entire cloud to a single 3-petabyte file and that's why it can only be restored on an all-or-nothing basis?  What kind of media do they use to store a file this big?
I don't know Rackspace's procedures nor your procedures; but I can offer you a clean explanation of not being able to restore the individual backups. I'm kinda familiar how other kinda-cloud provider does backups.

All the backups are encrypted with a transactional key. There are separate keys for each VM and for each incremental backup. The keys are stored only as long as the accounting record for the VM is open. Once the VM is deleted and summarized for the purpose of charging all transactional keys are deleted.

The encryption key deletion is a security precaution against many inside attacks as well as against compromised backup media.

The above procedure is actually an important selling point. If you don't do that internaly for the 3rd party data then you should start doing this as soon as practical to lower your own liability.

Hmm yeah I have come across something similar now that I think about it..  the service provider only has the keys as long as the customer has the service.   If the customer was subscribing to their own backup, only they would have the keys, and not the provider..

There may still be a way around it, but by design, money wouldn't necessarily fix this problem.  Guess i'm wrong.
279  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A public plea for help regarding Bitcoinica and my 24,841 BTC on: July 13, 2012, 11:00:42 PM
Rackspace's cloud keeps backup of all the could, it can't be used to recover data of a single client. That backup is kept in the event of emergency if anything drastic happens to Rackspace's infrastructure, that's why they offer optional offsite backup at extra if a customer requires it on individual level
Zhou has said before that they offered Rackspace $10k to help recover deleted serves; Rackspace simply couldn't help. RS would have to nuke all their cloud client's servers and restore them back (which also can be assumed isn't instantaneous process)

It's hard for me to picture a scenario where restoring a backup would "require" them to completely disrupt their clients' servers.  Surely they can restore it to other equipment that's not being used?  I mean, when I say I can "flip over backwards" and restore my backups for somebody, it doesn't mean I"m going to shut down all my services because I'm pretending that the backup can only be restored to the same hardware it was taken from - it means I'm going to grab some unused machine and restore to that instead.

At least if they have made the claim that they offered $10k and it wasn't accepted, that's better than what I had thought before, which was that no significant efforts were made (I don't follow every post on this topic).

I call bullshit, no half arse company(and mind you rackspace is fairly competent) would reject $10k for such a recovery job which they should have procedures in place to do.

Yeah, none of that adds up at all.. They could restore the VM's if they really wanted too, there is no technical barrier for them to do so that money can't fix, that's for certain.  I mean even if they were doing LUN level backup and had to recover 10, 50, 100 customers or something in order to pull the VM's out of the LUN, they could have restored it to some scratch space took what they needed and scrapped the rest.

We use ZFS for all our VM's,  if something like that happened on our systems, we mount the earlier snapshot and boot the VM right back up again in a sandbox, take whatever we need, and that's it.

Rackspace probably has similar technologies, worst case scenario they have to restore 100 customers to a sandbox,  10k, 20k, 50k, 100k,  any of these amounts would be trivial in this case.  I'm sure if you got escalated to the right level of management it would have happened, had they acted QUICKLY and DECISIVELY, which unfortunately, we know is NOT what they do..

Which is why this unfortunately does all look like the long con, none of this shit adds up, its just one amateur hour shit show that just keeps going and going and going..

280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised on: July 13, 2012, 03:46:11 PM
This should have been a non-issue because the funds should have been dispersed already, and if they weren't they should have been in a cold wallet, not on MTGOX.  Also the wire transfer has to be a big clue as to what is going on here?  Or at the very least, completely reversible.

This is just negligence all around...  there is no hiding it anymore.  There is no excuses anyone can make.
