261  Economy / Economics / MtGox creating money? on: July 07, 2011, 10:21:18 PM
I know there are some people here that are VERY opposed to the current bank system. How do you feel about MtGox creating redeemable codes. Do you think the will become to bitcoins, what notes were to gold?
262  Economy / Speculation / Re: CRASH! on: July 05, 2011, 07:36:17 PM

Learned about it last summer. Did some hobby mining (~10h) but didn't get any BTC. People said it barely paid for electricity. Come back this summer at about ~20. Miss 32 peak waiting for deposit. Cash reaches account at about 20 but this time going down. Made a nice profit taking short term positions. Still some money in coins, but still overall+.

EDIT: Tradehill seems to be recovering.

266  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trojan Wallet stealer be careful on: June 17, 2011, 06:35:14 PM
I have a simpler method than the netbook one, almost as safe. Make yourself a lot of wallets, with a fixed amount per wallet. Whenever you need to buy something, unencrypt the first wallet, send btc. Then proceed with the others. In this way, you can only lose one wallets worth.
Another advantage, which of course could also be gotten by with multiple addresses in a single wallet, is that your holdings wont stand out in block explorer (could potentially make you a target)

272  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why should I, a vendor, accept bitcoins? on: June 12, 2011, 07:18:37 PM
Its is very simple OP. People wanting to with bitcoins want to do it because of the coolness, and ideological reasons. This means that they probably wont mind a mark up high enough to cover your currency risk plus some extra

274  Other / Beginners & Help / Paypal considering 'in store payment" - can we learn any lessons? on: June 12, 2011, 07:02:11 PM
http://delimiter.com.au/2011/06/12/paypal-chief-hits-australia-wants-pos-payments/

They are apparently working on three mechanisms, one being through a cell phone, and two being secret.

Is there anyone out there doing a cell phone transfer mechanism? I can think of two possibilites for making this, one being more viable, and the other one being more in line with the ideology of bitcoin.
The first one is that you interface with (or create an) exchange like mtgox. Payments would be instant but there would be a single point of failure.
That other is that you run bitcoind, either on your phone or your home computer. Shopkeepers could potentially accept payment after just one block, since a low but existant scam rate could probably be tolerated.
For really high value items it would probably be too insecure, and waiting would be too slow.

279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A lucrative attack on bitcoin? on: July 23, 2010, 08:41:37 PM
Doing it my way should be able to give you around 10% of the value of all bitcoins in a short amount of time = more efficient
280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A lucrative attack on bitcoin? on: July 23, 2010, 08:30:32 PM
1. Acquire access of large botnet
2. Have bots join bitcoin.
3. Speculate against bitcoin somehow
4. Have all of you clients transfer huge amount of bitcoin to an account controlled by you using bogus blocks
Now either two of these will happen
*Massive loss of trust in bitcoin
  5. Profit from speculation
*Little or no loss of trust
  5. Profit from theft

Works?
