The real problem with the forum spam is SIMPLE : It's too easy to create accounts.
Just implement Captcha verification along with Email verification in order to register new accounts.
And force captchas for every post / pm until you hit X posts.
This board has 19694 total members.
You know how many currently have 50+ posts? Around 650.
I'm quite surprised at how poorly your 'forum spam' issues are being handled especially by people who are supposed to be technically adept.

i have been mostly hanging out in the mining forum and do not recall seeing a spam problem. either the mods were really good at their job, the spammers did not frequent it, or there was no spam problem. i just do not know.

My guess is due to the recent drop in value of btc on gox, trolls have come in faking posts trying to drive the value even lower so that they can buy their way in?

If the market is vulnerable to such low-level social engineering, that's quite a shame.

The captcha and email verification would not work to deter all the spam posts. Maybe reduce it a little but not entirely. All the posts were from people, not bots, who wanted to fuck with the community for some reason. Whatever they were doing wasn't having any impact but annoying people who wanted to read the board. The price drop has been attributed allegedly to one person selling a huge cache of old bitcoins.

It would deter them somewhat, you can also enable delays between every post.
And if you ban their account, they'd have to register a new email address, which would cut down on at least a good number of the trolls.
Imposing an arbitrary 50 post minimum is pretty hilarious, you think even legit members that want to participate are going to be providing quality posts in order to gain access to the main forums now, nope they're just going to shitpost. What are you going to do, hire more mods to check the quality of these posts? Why not use extra mods to quickly ban the trolls polluting the main forums, right now all you have to do is click register and you have a new account within half a minute, email verification will greatly deter creating accounts on the fly and if you get banned within a few minutes, are you really going to want to create a new email and verify it just to get banned again?

You should have to do some proof of work before you post

It's been said above - but a simple Capcha, and email verification at least slows the trolls down. Also the use of the Banhammer on obvious trolls - Gabriella and 15_YO_ Blonde come to mind among others.
Post quantity does not equal post quality... I'm really dreading finding enough vaguely useful things to say to get to 50 in this Newbie forum.
Thank you again for reinstating PM access - I am hopeful that some other less draconian measures may be taken in the coming days.

Email verification is useless. Anyone with access to a domain name can receive an unlimited number of verifications until that service is blocked, and then they can move on to another domain name.
IP blocking works alright if you spend a lot of time building proxy blocklists, but SMF doesn't have the tools to do it properly.
