261  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: ¿Hay chilenos con bitcoins? on: July 29, 2011, 09:32:33 AM

262  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Ozcoin mining thread for New Miners on: July 29, 2011, 09:15:18 AM
These guys took a project that was opensource called simplecoin that was licensed under the GPL
here is the link:
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=13164.msg181362#msg181362

This guys improved the source code, made changes, and kept it all to themselves in clear violation of the GPL.

I was trying to download the current source code for ozcoin and it is nowhere to be found, the only code available from them was when they made the fork, not the code with the improvements.

I am sure that simplecoin, mining farm, and others could benefit from the code created by Ozcoin.

Most of the software that we use is GPL including Bitcoin itself, the least we can do is have some respect for a good license, that exist for our own good.

I have seen a lot of projects here that look very good and are licensed under the GPL which is good, what is not good is people taking and forking the open source projects, and then turning them into proprietary closed source software.
263  Economy / Economics / Re: CAN BTC SURVIVE WITHOUT FIAT CURRENCY ? on: July 28, 2011, 09:31:07 AM
Yes, BTC can survive without a FIAT currency.

As time goes by, the power of BTC increases, as such the need to covert to dollar or other currencies will go down.

It is a inversely proportional relationship the more acceptance the BTC has the less of the need for the dollar.

Also most FIAT currencies are not virtual and thefore are for a different market, if  you do online transactions you will find the BTC of most value, compare the traditional mail to email they are both useful for different market segments, same with  bitcoins, it is not the same sending a dollar bill over the mail, than sending a BTC, on the other hand to pay the bus fare physical money is more practical at least for now.

But just as email took a large percentage of the market of traditional mail, bitcoin will do the same to traditional currencies.

Lets also do not forget that bitcoins are like cash, and not credit, as such there are very few virtual currencies in existance today, if we add that bitcoin is p2p, then bitcoins are unique.
264  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Namecoins is now 2x more profitable than Bitcoins on: July 27, 2011, 03:39:21 AM
Hi I found the problem it was that the namecoin download I used was actually a bitcoin software mislabeled, I got this time the namecoin software from  git clone git://github.com/vinced/namecoin.git
 and things are looking fine, it built a daemon called namecoind instead of bitcoind, and it uses a directory for configuration .namecoin instead of .bitcoin.

The download of the blocks seems to take forever to start, how long does it take for namecoin to start downloading the blocks when it is ran for first time?

265  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Namecoins is now 2x more profitable than Bitcoins on: July 27, 2011, 01:01:43 AM
I am having problems running namecoins, the software compiles fine, and it runs, I am using version v0.3.24rc2.zip of the software, the problem I have is that instead of downloading the block chain corresponding to namecoins it downloads the chain that corresponds to bitcoins.

for example the current block number under namecoin is somewhere around Block number 16128, and when I run the namecoin software it keeps downloading blocks like if it was running for bitcoins.

I tried on port 8332, and then on 8336 and same thing happens.

I am using Linux, tried un debian and centos and have the same problem.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Question in regard to mining server v5.1.4

Under account details, and then under Identity details, where it says:

JSON Mining & Worker Data

Righ below there is a very large string of characters that looks like a bitcoin address but it is not.

What is it?
Is it some sort of key ? something that is private ?

Is that something that needs to be changed?

Thanks,
267  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining Farm - Tech support on: July 26, 2011, 11:13:51 AM
Hi Everyone, I have just set up a mining server based on xenland's version 5.1.4.

The server is http://www.bitcoinmoneda.com, it is in beta state since I just got it up and running.

I have a few questions, are there any known bugs that I should be aware of such on version 5.1.4, since no blocks have been found, the server it is not fully tested.

When browsing the site I get some apache error logs in regards to the database, such as  Undefined
index when php tries to access the database, however it seems to work, however it generates lots of apache error logs.

The other error I found was when loading the database on line 301 in miningfarm_database.sql

-- Dumping data for table `stats_topSharers`
--
'7', 0);
Had no clue where the '7', 0); belongs so I put it in the line above commented out, if you know  what line should be on the file please let me know.

The other problem is that chart for bitcoin value in fiat it is not working on my site, if someone could tell me where to look for the configuration or troubleshooting for that chart.

I think everything else is probably working, so if you would like to join the pool, that would be fantastic it will help test out the site, given the current difficulty level of finding a block, the more miners that join the better.

If you know of any known bugs please let me know, so that I can apply the fixes to the mining server.

Xenland, good job on the  bitcoin mining server software.
Thanks.

268  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: new bitcoin 3.24rc2 missing fields from getinfo on: July 21, 2011, 09:41:13 AM
sorry, disregard the previous post, it is late night, and I confused the version I had recently compiled, with another I had in the same directory.
269  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / new bitcoin 3.24rc2 missing fields from getinfo on: July 21, 2011, 09:38:12 AM
Why does the newer version of bitcoin 3.24rc2 has missing fields when using getinfo to get the information, it does not show the version number, paytxfee, and other fields, here is the comparison:

I recently installed, that why the block number is low:

./bitcoin getinfo
{
    "balance" : 0.000000000000000,
    "blocks" : 501,
    "connections" : 1005,
    "proxy" : "",
    "generate" : false,
    "genproclimit" : -1,
    "difficulty" : 1.000000000000000
}
Is this an strip down version, or was paytxfee removed, how about the other missing fields?

What I did notice on the newer version, is that the number of connections is very high, I never got that many connections with the older version, the difference in number of connections is huge.
But the number of blocks seems to be stuck at 501 it has been  several minutes and no change, also the new version is using lots of CPU even though I am not mining is this normal?

and the older version 3.22
./bitcoind getinfo
{
    "version" : 32200,
    "balance" : 0.00000000,
    "blocks" : 127364,
    "connections" : 0,
    "proxy" : "",
    "generate" : false,
    "genproclimit" : -1,
    "difficulty" : 434882.72174970,
    "hashespersec" : 0,
    "testnet" : false,
    "keypoololdest" : 1306594459,
    "paytxfee" : 0.00000000,
    "errors" : ""
}

270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: July 20, 2011, 06:04:27 PM
Here is the method on how you can get your 7 bitcoins back.
Paypal completely ignores blockexplorer, and it will go as far as denying that it exists, since it is obvious that palpal does not like bitcoin, and there is no point arguing to them about blockexplorer since they ignore it because it is convenient for them.

This is what you have to do, provide a tracking number, the delivery method is not important as long as it provides a tracking number, then provide that tracking number to paypal and a copy of the receipt with the tracking number to paypal, file uploads are disabled by default on the dispute form so you will have to call paypal to get file upload enables.

Just claim that the bitcoins were sent by mail, and you are covered for buyer protection. you can send the address where the bitcoin was sent, a copy of block explorer, a certificate, anything that proves that you sent the bitcoin, in the mail claim the value as the value of the bitcoins it represents.

I got my bitcoins back after 15 days.

Also ebay feedback is screwed up big time, since seller where only allowed to leave positive feedback for the scammer, there was a lot of positive feedback  for jabgasrm calling him an scammer, all that feedback was removed by ebay, I have a picture of the feedback page before ebay did the cleaning to his feedback.
Leason to be learned from this, is that ebay feedbacks are not trustworthy, they have no value whatsoever, before 2008 they meant something, but not now.
271  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoind x86 binary for CentOS on: July 20, 2011, 12:18:24 AM
An easy way around the problem is compile bitcoind under debian statically, and then it will run under Cent OS without problems.
However that is easy for the command line version, it is very difficult for the gui.
To get it to compile statically you have to make sure that under debian you have installed the developer libraries, most of those libraries are not installed by default, under ubuntu it is the same as debian.
By developer library I mean those libraries that end in .a for example libxxx.a, the ones that en in .so are runtime libraries.

272  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [SOLVED]pyopencl.LogicError: clGetPlatformIDs failed: invalid/unknown error code on: July 19, 2011, 07:52:32 AM
I have the same problem.
What did you do to fix it?
273  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: help, cannot get phoenix or poclbm to work using hd6970 on: July 19, 2011, 07:50:37 AM
I found what is causing the problem, it seems phoenix is using the older ati-stream-sdk-v2.1-lnx64, but now the newer
AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx64, even though SDK 2.4 is supposed to be installed.

Since SDK v2.1 does not support the hd6970 that explains why the hd6970 does not work, the the hd5970 works fine.

Do you guys have a link to where I can find out how to migrate to the newer SDK v2.4 since when I remove the SDK 2.1 and only have the SDK 2.4 nothing works.

Any help on the migration from AMD SDK 2.1 to SDK V2.4 will really help.

I probably have some package or something missing that is required when using SDK V2.4, but that is not required for SDK V2.1, all help will be greatly appreciated.

274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Exchanging BTC for paypal vs exchanging for gift cards - legal ramifications? on: July 18, 2011, 08:07:07 AM
BTC  is a currency for us, however from a legal point of view, since you can not pay taxes with BTC, BTC is just a good.
Your point of view is correct, in regards to laws they are not an exact science as such anything is possible it is best to play it safe.
The other point to consider is that with paypal you open yourself to potential fraud, it is very easy for an scammer to file a charge back, and to play safer with paypal to increase your operational costs since you will need to provide tracking numbers for your own safety.

If you are a huge vendor than paypal is probably ok, but for small vendors it is not secure.
dwolla is probably a good alternative to paypal, time will tell.

275  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: help, cannot get phoenix or poclbm to work using hd6970 on: July 18, 2011, 06:46:52 AM
I tried that and it did not work.

But before I continue to try to get the hd6970 I will get some pci extender riser cards to relocate the card, locating 3 cards in a row it is a bad idea when they are air cooled, they get extremely hot.

Can anyone recommend a pci-e16 extender riser card that uses a round cable instead of a ribbon cable.
The reason for trying to avoid a ribbon cable, is that the round cable is more flexible and will make relocation of card easier  for best airflow, and possibly I could use up to 4 cards per motherboard.

276  Bitcoin / Mining support / help, cannot get phoenix or poclbm to work using hd6970 on: July 17, 2011, 07:35:53 AM
Hi,
I was mining with 2 hd5970 cards and phoenix and poclbm where working fine, I added a third card an hd6970 and now both miners do not work, I tested without the hd5970 and the hd6970 still did not work.

the accelerated graphics display is working fine using the hd6970, so the video drivers are fine.

Also the command
aticonfig --list-adapters
displays all the adapters properly like this:
* 0. 10:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
  1. 0f:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  2. 0e:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  3. 07:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  4. 06:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series

* - Default adapter

However when trying to run the 5th miner, I run into this problem:
No device specified or device not found, use DEVICE=ID to specify one of the following

  • AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor
  • [1] Cypress
        [2] Cypress
        [3] Cypress
        [4] Cypress

    The device for the hd6970 is not listed, even though the aticonfig --list-adapters can see the card.

    I was running ati-stream-sdk-v2.1-lnx64, but I updated to the latest which is  AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx64, and the catalyst software driver is 11.6.

    I did reconfigure X, and it seems to work fine, since both hd5970 are mining fine both with both cores, and the hd6970 is being used for the display, also the catalyst control center can see the hd6970 when it is the first card.

    I tried with phoenix 1.4 and 1.5 and I got the same problem.

    The only problem seems that I can not mine with the hd6970.
    Any help will be highly appreciated.
    What am I doing wrong ?

277  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Pushpool Web Frontend] Simplecoin v2.0 Opensource PHP/MySQL on: July 08, 2011, 05:38:19 AM
Great job, for simplecoin.

One thing that is important to know is that security by obscurity is a very bad thing, most of the times there are problems with the design and even when the design of the algorithm is good, there are security holes that go undetected until the cracker finds out.

Open source security algorithms are the best, for example take a look at the security of the bitcoin network, it is very solid, and in the rare event that a security was found most likely it would be in the implementation and it would be fixed within hours.

There are a lot of commercial security closed source programs that use the vigenere cipher, of course that is a secret, the vigenere cipher is very easy to implement and it provides security against the average person, but by design it is insecure, it is used a lot due to its simplicity,  in closed source it is very hard to tell it uses the vigenere chipher, until someone does some reverse engineering, and after that the security completely colapses, any good cracker will crack the algorithm no very easy but doable. There are other algorithm that are also very simple and easy to implement used in closed source programs like rot13, or substitution cipher both very insecure and worse than vigenere.

Then there the famous one time pad very secure only algorithm proven to be unbreakable but also not very practical.

The there are the good ones, but more complex idea, rsa, blowfish, etc, these can only be broken by brute force attacks, extremely difficult specially is the keys are large.

I used to be a cryptographer in the mid 90, so I am not up to date with the latest algorithms, but one thing I learned is that most close source packages are very insecure, and there are packages that break the security of those closed source programs, there was a programmer I do not remember his name that wrote software to unlock the locks, he was arrested in las vegas by the fbi after he gave a conference in defcon, he would talk a lot about insecure close source software with mathematical proofs, he sold unlock software for most closed source commerical packages.

The lesson to be learned is that for the most security it is best to rely on a good algorithm, and not by security by obscurity, therefore most secure algorithms are usually open source. In theory if a person is a brilliant genius a close source security software could be secure, but for most of us, and most real world cases, open source is the way to go for security.

In many companies managers believe on closed source, the only reason for that is ignorance, they are usually not cryptographers, and know very little about programming, when working for a company like that vigenere cipher is great makes the manager happy and you are done quickly with the job, but for a job well done it is all in the algorithm and its implementation  and it takes more work when you have security in mind.

278  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: July 07, 2011, 04:50:32 PM
Today I spoke to paypal and they are full of bs, they sayd "they believe the buyers account was compromised", I told them it is a bunch of bs, and I told them that they should have it secure on the very first chargeback.

The do not recognize electronic delivery even though they can be proven.

Here is my plan, and we are probably going to get our money back but it will take for ever, we can organize as a whole under one team since it is the same case for all of us, and under small claims court sue paypal, it will be up to the judge weather electronic delivery can be proven or not, given the very strong evidence against the scammer and paypal we have a very strong posibility of winning.

It makes more sense to sue paypal, since it is paypal that has failed us, and taken our money, the scammer would have never succeded without the help of paypal.

Under small claims in California the limit is $7500, and we should file suit for the actual amount of money that is going to cost to fight the case, legal advice, many trips to court, time loss,  email expenses, transportation, court expenses, etc, but under small claims it is mostly time that is wasted, not too much money, most likely paypal will never go to court and settle out of court since it is in their best interest.
With the evidence we have I believe we can win the case against paypal under small claims court.

Here is my email if someone would like to fight paypal under small claims court: sergiori@hotmail.com

The idea it to get all the facts organized, with all the people that got scammed.
We can each file one individual law suit, or one law suit covering us all.

279  Economy / Economics / Re: Percent BTC in "Circulation" on: July 07, 2011, 09:22:41 AM
Well the US economy is based on debt, so that would explain more money in circulation.

In the bitcoin economy is hard to know exact number it is a growing economy, but the more trade that takes place the better for the bitcoin economy.
280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: July 07, 2011, 08:37:51 AM
in regard to the reference of the law, the link was in spanish, here I found the link in english:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customary_law

It is called custom or customary law,
This makes bitcoins legal and accepted by paypal, since they are allowing bitcoins.
Customary law is probably valid on some countries. I am not an expert on law.

But follow my advice stay away from paypal it is not only an scam, it is a criminal enterprise.

I knew paypal was bad, and most of us know that paypal is bad, but what you probably do not know is how bad their are.
I am pretty sure a good lawyer could sue them big time for all the fraud they do, the problem is that if the fine awarded by a court is lower than they money they make of deft, they will continue stealing their customers money.

I never expected them to be as corrupt as they are, the allow a massive fraud to take place knowingly.

The problem are not the bitcoins, the problem is paypal.
