One more query.

You said, you could send anything, including messages.
Where would this messages be stored?
If its distributed, how long would it be stored for?
Would it slow down the transactions, if the network gets bloated with huge messages.

Thanks for the answers.

Messages will be stored in the blockchain. Unlike aliases they will be shrunk during annual shrinking.

Later an anti-spam feature will be added. It will be based on destruction of coins (but we have to add satoshis for that).

You mean BCs

Would this be a limitation for the machines running as miners/forgers as they need to have huge disk spaces for storing all these data for validating the BC.

BC is a potential name for a divisible NXT.....like Satoshis are for Bitcoin

4. Is the NO sell option a technical hurdle or a design decision? I understand the ability to sell the passphrase, however, there would be nothing stopping the seller from jumping back in at anytime and redirecting the alias to another site.

This could create an entirely new ecosystem within the currency itself. If I was JoeBobsBaitNTackle.com, I'd love to be able to purchase this alias if it's already taken up. The fear is someone just hoards the good names and it loses it's effectiveness.

If it's not a consideration, I understand. I just wanted to lay out a few thoughts.

5. Will there be some type of plugins for FireFox or IE to utilize the nxt alias:

Example: Candy links to www.myfavoritecandy.com

If not, will there be a custom browser that allows it?

4. It's by design to counteract cybersquatting.
5. All existing browsers will be supported via JavaScript code, but u can't do "type and go" without a plugin. Someone should create such plugins.

I understand and support mechanisms to stop cyber squatting. With that being said, I hope you consider other alternatives down the road to expand the system. While cybersquatting is an annoyance, giving people the ability to participate in free market exchange of registered names might also be an important factor for adoption.

Nothing prevents someone from coming in, registering all the nicks in this thread and basically shutting out options for other users. With the ability to sell names, at least the market can determine a fair price. As a truly decentralized currency, I would think the free market would outweigh the cybersquatting issues. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the reply, look forward to using this feature in the future.

I agree with the above....the more demand for an alias the more its value will increase so a decentralized market work very easily.

It would give another a reason for companies and individuals to use Nxt as a marketing tool thereby increasing real world usage.

If someone blocks a companies name then they would no recourse.

The most obvious use of alias is to name your account #.

Hope BCNext will provide the possibility to send money to the alias.

Yes, Alias System is planned to be used to send coins to named accounts.

and messages too?

good idea....each alias would be unique....it would protect from sending funds to the wrong account No.'s.....just send to the specific alias.

I guess a search function would also need to be included in the client.

Just search the alias & send.

Guys, r u ready for the squatting? Once Alias System is activated u'll get opportunity to squat on nice aliases like "nxt", "sex" and "batman"... Alias System is the future of Internet, one short word acquired today for 1 NXT will be worth billions of dollars in 5 years. Wink

How exactly do you buy aliases? And who defines the price?

I think this is where the decentralized exchange comes in.

2607  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 18, 2013, 10:04:49 AM
Next update will include Alias System migration code (blocks that contain AS transactions will be considered valid, but transactions won't be created yet). Should we use "0.4.0" for version or "0.3.21"?

0.4.0....it would simplify things a bit
2608  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 17, 2013, 06:06:58 PM
Tomorrow I'll get code that allows to assign aliases to any URI (or to an arbitrary string). "Official" name of this system is Alias System, not (decentralized) DNS. We will be able to use it via API calls but this is not very convenient. If anyone is planning to create a client soft for Messaging, please, think if u can fit Alias System into it.

this sounds interesting

May I ask what is the percentage of the unclaimed coins versus total coinbase?

We have to wait when BCNext gives an answer...

ok

Some guys had attempted to claim coins that didn't belong to them. BCNext refused to answer the question to make it difficult to pretend to be a legit owner.

I think a large portion should be donated to the NXT Foundation.

We have to decide by vote or other means about:

1)   Logo
2)   NXT tagline
3)   Currency Symbol

Can we update all competitors narrow them down to 5 and take a vote?
As of now I find symbols, taglines and logo all over the place.

Pin

The Poll for Tagline closes on Dec. 18th @ 11:31 am -- Eastern Standard time.

Pls vote.

IMPORTANT....I THINK WE SHOULD MOVE THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE SYMBOL & LOGO POLLS FORWARD TO WITHIN 5 Days....as there are others waiting to execute Marketing/Social media campaigns and they can;t move without these 3 decisions being finalized.

We barely have 2 weeks till launch!

I have been under a rock, where is the voting poll link?

https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,692.0.html -- Tagline

https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,6.0.html  -- Logo

Creating Currency symbol poll right now...all 3 polls will be in https://nextcoin.org/index.php/board,6.0.html  -- tread

what does every one think of this NXT logo?:

Its simple and and futuristic at the same time...it was made by this guy who improved the mac client here: https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,651.0.html

It should be added to the logo poll list.

I'd like to remind that there are still some unclaimed coins left. 3rd Jan, 2014 is the last day u can claim them!

After the date, could these go toward bounties?

Part of these coins will go to support public nodes.

Sent 200K from the donation pool to klee's 2584657662098653454 account to let him continue our promoting based giveaway.
I can focus on bounty thread entirely now, I need your preview of the already submitted videos and articles there to assign and award the bounty prizes accordingly. Please go there and make a review comment!

Great news.

We really need to clean up that Nxt giveaway tread also...many new member are putting there accounts and getting no Nxt....I already saw some negative press about this from some trolls claiming that Nxtsters are cheap & Nxt is a scam...F*#king trolls!
2619  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] What is the best policy for Mastercoin data feed update frequency? on: December 14, 2013, 12:26:44 PM
I think it would depend on the particular data feed...some commodity prices are more volatile than others.

It might cause problems if you implement an arbitrary timing....the data feed update interval should be determined by the initiator of the data feed itself.

I already watched that. And did exactly the same thing. Just doesnt work.

1) Remove (x86) from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -jar start.jar

2) Save "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe" -jar start.jar -- inside start.bat file....only the above line should be in the .bat file

3) double Click start.bat file

Did not work again. Using windows 7 btw.

I suggest you go thru the video again....I had a seriously hard time installing the client just like you until I watched the video and followed it exactly....try going thru the video once or twice again without doing action....just watch the video from beginning to end.
