Plainly. Hey Josh said so...must be true. His track record of accuracy speaks for itself...um. He's either incompetent or spewing bs, and I don't think he's incompetent.

Just examine his newest stance fas. Those defective imperfect chips had to be respun so they're being shipped over sometime in the fuzzy week of the 11th...or later in December, but somehow magically BFL is going to get the new chips(which will of course be perfect), assemble units, test them and ship them before 12/31/12? I suspect there might be a problem.
Look at EVERY BFL employees postings from before October, and it is plain to see they all expected to ship them in October.  It's not just Josh.

He hasn't promised anything with regards to December 11th, only given his best estimate of when things will get rolling again.  I don't know what your problem with that is.

What do you mean "get rolling again"? They were rolling at some point? I've heard about some perty perty cases, some proposed clock buffers, some defective chips that weren't defective and not much else. I guess I'm just skeptical about someone's projections when that person never seems to be right. I do realize nothing has been promised and the wording has been softened from YES SHIPPING IN OCTOBER...REALLY! to we hope to ship all batch 1 pre-orders by the end of January 31 2013(unlikely).
I am skeptical as well.  I hope they do ship out sometime soon in December, but I am not expecting them to.

I have worked in manufacturing before, I know how not having one part can delay an entire product line.  I also have full confidence that BFL has not tried to mislead anyone at any time.  Whenever they mentioned a particular date of shipment, it was based on everything going right.  Things have not gone right, so they had to delay.  I really do not understand why people make such a big deal out of unforseen delays.  They tried to give a good estimate, not knowing that the chips would need a revision, or that they needed to wait on other parts, etc.  Despite that, they did pad their October 2012 estimate by stating that it was a best-case scenario, and they would have to delay it if there was any delay in acquiring parts necessary for assembling the units.

Basically, I still fail to see where they've done anything wrong, even though the whole of bitcointalk seems to think they are of the devil.
2642  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is stealing Bitcoins illegal? on: December 04, 2012, 12:20:48 AM
In the matter of "what do the magical.papers say about theft and bitcoin", precedent is not necessary to prove that stealing bitcoin is forbidden by the magical papers -- showing a statute will do. Someone already showed a statute pertinent to the matter so I consider this case proven and closed.

Really?  Who?  I've provide the only statue that might cover it; New Jersey's definition that includes information, data... but there have been no court rulings on what that means.
I mean if I look at your test in school technically I've stolen your answers... IE your information or data.  Do we really want that to be handled as theft?  So I'd want to see some rulings before one can really point to New Jersey and say 'AH HA!' and really that still leaves quite a few other states which don't have such specific protections in their laws.
Test scores don't have value, and it doesn't cost the person anything if you look.  That's a bad example compared to Bitcoin, which does have value and does cost the person something if you steal.
A)Tests do have a value.  5 seconds of google finds a story of people paying 1500-2500 to cheat at the SAT.
B)It's not a perfect example but I was just trying to illustrate the dangerous of 'theft of information'
How about if you change the names on their test?  Now you've both deprived them of their test and taken something of value.  Happy?
(Not sure how that would be prosecuted though...  Probably fraud)
A) Test answers have value, sure.  But that isn't their normal usage, whereas the normal usage for Bitcoin is as a vehicle of value.  When someone thinks of test answers, they don't think of a way to make monetary transactions with other people.
B) If someone changed the name at the top of my test, and I wasn't able to set the record straight with the professor, I'd sue whoever changed it for everything I could.  I'd sue someone who stole my Bitcoins too.  So, what's your point?

I might be interested, but one question I have is that of resale value.  Is there an easy way to test a silver ingot like this for purity and legitimacy?  In other words, if I wanted to sell it to someone else, how could they be assured that it is legitimately .99 purity silver?

So BFL cancels one delivery date after the other, because they are supposedly only waiting for parts (mainly the ASICs themselves!) - yet they are still fiddling around with the design of their casing?!?!

BFL_Josh: "I was taking some pics for some promotional stuff tonight, so I thought I'd share some of the pics. This is the new, taller case to accomodate some better airflow, ..."

One could expect that they by now have tons of casings ready just waiting for the PCB to be plugged in - yet they don't even have that!

Man! How on earth would you have kept your initial deadline for October (or even November) shipment?

They plainly never intended to ship in October or November. It's all just a bunch of lip service carefully disseminated to gobble up as much market share as possible and to keep those that pre-ordered from cancelling. Even BFL people cannot be so utterly incompetent that they've screwed the pooch twice in two outtings. Oops we missed the power estimates for our FPGA products by 400%...sorry. Please.
They plainly did intend to ship in October, but the first batch of chips didn't work (at least to BFL's satisfaction), so they had to push back the date.

Finding something you love to work on, that truly benefits the world is the trick.

Otherwise, and for 99% of people: works sucks, and it's a scam to rob you of your energy, see: The Matrix

It's *really* sad that people equate not working with being lazy etc.  I'm guessing - American?  In actuality, the world is a mysterious and amazing place, and there isn't enough time for any of us to read any significant fraction of the great literatry works, learn a language or two, learn to draw and paint and sculpt, or play any number of instruments, or do any of the countless things you could be doing if you weren't imprisoned by your work.

The full time job prevents you from doing these things, therefore a full time job prevents you from growing and maturing as a person.  And your wife and kids would rather have you come home alive with life, vibrant, intelligant having enriched your life all day, rather than slaving away at a keyboard working for profit (paid in fiat no doubt).

OP was 100% right!  Also, some of us understand that and design our lives so our job IS outside in the fresh air and sunshine.
When you can find me a part-time job that pays the mortgage, puts food on the table, and pays for gas and other misc expenses, then I'll listen.  Otherwise... a full time job it is!

I live like no one else today so that I can live like no one else tomorrow.  And that includes working a full time job so that I can retire quickly and comfortably and have the monetary freedom to do whatever I damn well please.  Wink  I could be a bum too, but that would limit the possibilities of what I want to do/explore/see/learn in the future.
2647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Help Support bitcointip (at reddit) on: December 03, 2012, 11:33:26 PM
I don't see too many people getting annoyed there.  Mostly just people asking questions about it (isn't that a good thing?).

Certainly, having a +tip in every thread on every reddit would be a bit much, but I don't see the problem with giving decent-sized tips sparingly here and there.

Neither do I, I didn't look. I was responding to the argument only. Not all exposure is good. And imo associating with low rent spam tactics is worse than being know as the Currency of Evil TM
Yes, I can agree to that!

It is a good way to expose people to Bitcoin, but use it sparingly, and give amounts that actually matter (not 0.00001 BTC or something)!
2648  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [POLL] If BFL has ASICs made, is it more profitable for them to not sell any? on: December 03, 2012, 11:31:17 PM
Not at all.  This has been discussed at length, and the bottom line comes to this:  If they tried to mine instead of ship, they would be sued by all of their customers, they would ruin any potential future profit, and they would only be able to viably take about 1/3 of the hashing power without being detected (and even that would be difficult, but I digress), which means a maximum profit of $15k/day.  If they were detected as having 1/3 (and thus being able to easily take over the network if they so should desire), then it would eliminate confidence in Bitcoins, no one would want them, and the price would plummet.  Suddenly, they're making $10/day instead of $15,000.

No.
NO.
NO!

And please stop asking this silly, silly question.

1) You have not proven that the previous case had inadequate airflow. Just because airflow has been improved does not mean that previous airflow was inadequate for use at the speeds advertised.
2) It is entirely possible that they decided to revise their cases after announcing a speed increase (and thus estimated heat dissipation requirements).
3) They very well may have tons of casings ready for the PCB.  Maybe these taller cases are for a future revision?
4) Perhaps the cases are made locally and have a short leadtime.  They aren't anything more difficult than simple punches out of sheet metal - they could be made in bulk very quickly.

Who would like the snippet code to run the loop? Let's break the key space up and share the prize haha. Or maybe I can sell the snippet. I'll let you chose which range in which spot and you can try luck of the draw and see if you can pick the right key space. First letter given should finish the race in a few hours. I'll take it if you're still handing it out at 20:00 UTC
If you give me the code, I'll run it and share half the prize with you if I find it.

I'll agree to that deal if you are interested. Want the code or a compiled exe? (and we'll wait for the starting letter to be revealed right?
Compiled exe would be great - I've tried compiling things in C before and it just doesn't go well.  I'd rather not go through it again if I can avoid it.

And yes, to anyone who questions whether I would share the prize as I have said I would, I'm not selling out my reputation here (and a multitude of other online presences, since I use this screen name almost exclusively) ever, for any dollar amount.  Keeping my integrity intact and a clear conscience is worth far more than anything money could buy.

I'll start whenever I can (whenever you send me the exe), but certainly, having the starting letter would help expedite the process of finding it.

You win 1 million in Canada it's 100% yours.... Same in the Casino's you win it's yours

Just like most of the world outside the US. And this is how it should be since gambling institutions already pay lots of tax - there certainly should not be double taxation by taxing personal winnings as well!

Rather, for every one million dollar winning prize that is taxed, there are two million dollars of losing ticket buyers that should all get to write off their losses on their taxes, fair is fair, Mr Taxman.
I thought they could?  Aren't you able to write off gambling losses?  Or is it just matching losses with wins, so that you can deduct against taxable winnings?

So how are people automatically checking password combinations?  2 results per second and whatnot?  Have you each written/modified code on your own for this?

Just to make note of this... if we assume 25,000 BTC is owed (I think that is the amount I remember), then 1.7% payouts represents 425 BTC.  Not a huge amount of money, but definitely enough to show commitment.

I've got to ask, if you're selling 18 GPU's + other misc hardware, that should bring in at least $1500... why not buy an ASIC and keep the tradition going?

Well, I did spend a few days reading up on the pros/cons of ASIC pre-orders, thinking about it, and figuring out the best position on the issue.

My decision: ASIC is too risky right now. ESPECIALLY for pre-ordering non-existent hardware (yes, that includes hardware "in development")

1. No final hardware has been shown off; furthermore, there have already been many delays to the ship date.
2. One or more companies could be a scam. Bitcoin is all about making easy money, and it HAS attracted many scams and scammers in the past.
3. Recouping one's investment might already be impossible, unless you're in the top 5% of the wait list.
4. ASICs are only good for ONE thing. As gutsy as buying 18 GPUs was, it wasn't really all that risky. They can always be sold to gamers at any time. If you can't make back your $1300 Single due to skyrocketing difficulty, you're screwed. No one's going to shut off their ASIC. No one's going to repurpose a Single into a gaming rig. If someone quits and sells his Single, guess what? The buyer will fire it back up and it will be back on the Network. When the difficulty goes up, it WON'T be coming down...ever.
5. The whole ASIC thing gives me a bad feeling -- I mean about profitability. There is no barrier to entry; just plug & play. No more cooling setups, building clever rigs, finding space for them, watching the 15 amp circuit breaker limit, etc. My entire being says this is where things go "parabolic" -- where a dozen individuals or companies come in and BECOME the network. Or at least 95% of it.

Best post I've seen yet on the current and near future of mining. Came to the same conclusion and dumped 8 GPUs last month on ebay and got over 75% of original cost back. Check out ebay now...some 6950s standing at 80 bucks! The entire mining scene has become sketchy and almost silly. The ASICs may or may not turn out to be dependable and outstanding in many ways...but as it stands now, it's just as likely that many will be scammed or stuck with unworkable/unreliable equipment by amateur industrialists that fold not long after making couple million bucks.

But if ASICs do ending working as promised, it's even worse. Like stated above, this will become a plutocracy where a few well-heeled miners will drive the difficulty stake into the heart of all the small miners like myself. I'm out of the game now and kind of relieved. It was a lot of fun and very challenging but time to move on to a new hobby. There was never really any money in it for small timers like me but it was fun fooling myself Smiley
I doubt very much that this will happen.  Any fluctuation in BTC price would directly correlate with profitability of any miners, and if such a plutocracy was to form, it would have to be due to electrical expenses.  I don't see any point in the near future where the BTC price is stable enough to allow big miners to out the small miners just based on electric costs alone.  Any fluctuation could make or break a "big miner" mining on that thin of margins.
