2641  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi wallet hacked, all funds stolen on: March 25, 2023, 10:08:41 AM
This is very strange.
"Someone can only access your coins if; - He has access to your recovery phrase/private keys. - If he has access to your device and knows your app password."

I guess you mean it's strange that the OP claims Coinomi is somehow at fault for his coins being stolen. If not, let's analyze those support comments. I didn't read the sources, so I am only focusing on the parts you highlighted.

There is nothing strange about what the source says. Whoever has the seed or private keys can remotely access and spend whatever coins are stored in the corresponding addresses. If someone gets hold of your phone where you have Coinomi installed, he can open the app without a password. However, if he wants to make a transaction, he needs to enter the password. If he wants to see the seed or make account changes, he also needs a password.
2642  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Launched the First Bitcoin Wallet for KaiOS-powered Feature Phones! 🚀 on: March 25, 2023, 09:59:38 AM
- Given user feedback and testing it is custodial
So you asked your community of potential users whether they preferred a custodial wallet (where you hold their keys) or one where you are in control of their money (a non-custodial one), and they said we want you to do it?! Where and how did you communicate with those users to get such results, any links?

- Yes to security audits
Provide more info please. Who audited your software? Did they release a public report?
2643  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Guy buys Ledger on Amazon... his crypto gets stolen... on: March 25, 2023, 08:08:30 AM
It would not make sense if the device itself prompted him to visit a fake website, I don't know how the attacker would mess with the device itself that way... What are the chances he bought a counterfeit Ledger or the Ledger box as altered so we would visit the fake website after going through the setup.
If we are going to believe his unbelievable story, then the chances of him having bought a fake device are 100%. A legit Ledger HW does not communicate with you and tell you what software to install and which websites to visit. It doesn't tell you there is a new app update, LL update, or firmware update. You check that yourself.

A ledger with 3rd-party firmware can't connect to the official Ledger Live app servers. So, he couldn't have passed the onboarding process, installed the crypto apps, generated the seed, etc. The other possibility is that he used a genuine device with fake firmware and with a fake Ledger Live app. Of course, we can't rule out that the whole story is just a big lie.
2644  Economy / Gambling / Re: Duelbits.com | Casino & Sportsbook | VIP | Instant withdrawals!|ARGENTINA & AVFC on: March 25, 2023, 08:01:37 AM
Is it true that there are certain times that provide lower transaction fees?
All this time I did not know about this because when making each transaction I did not really pay attention to the fees I had to pay.
After all, I am a small gambler, so every transaction I make is never with a large enough nominal amount so that the costs I need to pay are relatively low.
If indeed this is real, maybe it can be a reference for me later if one day I get a big win and want to withdraw all of my winnings so I can save on transaction fees.
I am not sure what you mean exactly when you say "times". Do you mean part of the day, like in the morning or evening? Or part of the week (business days, weekends)?
Since Ordinals got introduced to Bitcoin, it doesn't matter when you make you transaction. The network is constantly congested. It's become even worse because what used to be 20-30k of unconfirmed transactions, is now 50-60k.

If you are talking about withdrawal fees on casinos and sportbooks, it is especially important that you pay attention to that if you are a small-time gambler. Small wagers equals small wins most of the time. If there is a hefty fee when you withdraw, that win becomes even smaller.
2645  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: March 24, 2023, 08:16:14 PM
What is your relation to Wasabi?
He answered that in one of his previous posts. He said he is a contributor.

I'm a contributor.
It's too vague of an answer in my opinion and can mean many different things. Are you part of their development or engineering team? Are you someone who inspects their code for other reasons and contributes to code changes? Or are you someone that "contributes" to better the image of Wasabi and zkSNACKs on Bitcointalk? Maybe you are the mysterious co-host or part of their crew. Wink
2646  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Guy buys Ledger on Amazon... his crypto gets stolen... on: March 24, 2023, 08:05:32 PM
It sounds very odd that someone getting a hardware wallet (knowing what the Hardware wallets are for) ends up typing down its own seed during the setup.
Worse! It was after the setup. He set up his wallet and then he moved his coins to it. After some time, he claims his wallet notified and instructed him to visit a website (which he believes wasn't the genuine Ledger website, obviously). It was on that website that he entered his seed, and shortly after had his wallets emptied. I have never heard of a scam involving this last step.

- not a word of the phishing website, again weird, hot the hell don't you remember it?
He doesn't even have to remember it. He could look it up in his browsing history. Maybe he doesn't know that either or will tell us he ordered it in incognito mode.
2647  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: March 24, 2023, 07:51:55 PM
That's a pretty close metaphor, but the only thing the co host can do is glance at a people who walk through the door to see if they look identical to any mugshots of the "most wanted" criminal list posted in the town square.
I don't think Wasabi or zkSNACKs have ever released information about what is or what isn't allowed. To continue with the metaphor, your party guests don't even know who the co-host is. They can feel someone looking at them, but they don't know who it is. So, who is looking at the guests? And who wrote the list with the names of those who aren't allowed to enter? It's not public information.
2648  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Thinking of separating my holdings into two physical locations. on: March 24, 2023, 07:41:17 PM
someone that has no clue what is going on is ripe to be scammed, among other things. if it was me i think i'd be taking a more active role in managing my money... Shocked
I don't disagree, nor do I think that it's praiseworthy. With the possibility of sounding like a d**k, some of these lads that come from South America (when football is concerned) are almost illiterate. They grew up in poor families with no money for the essential things in life. They don't have money for education is start kicking a ball from early age. They look at football as a way of improving the lives of themselves and their families. And they are good at it. I don't want to derail this topic any further with this.
2649  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Guy buys Ledger on Amazon... his crypto gets stolen... on: March 23, 2023, 04:51:01 PM
You would think that someone who is giving out crypto advice knows the basics themselves. Crypto Jay didn't.

Instead of visiting the official website and finding the link to Amazon (if he insists on using Amazon) there, Crypto Jay thought it was better to go to Amazon directly and browse hardware wallets by manually looking at the offers. He didn't even buy from an official Amazon reseller, but was led astray somewhere by fake reviews. I would also expect that someone should know not to trust internet reviews.

Crypto Jay should also have done some research into what the official Ledger website is. Because he didn't, the fake device he got instructed him to visit a phishing website. He says in the video he doesn't even know which website it took him to, and he doesn't believe it was the legit one. He "thought" he was on the correct one. That's another thing. Neither Ledger nor Trezor tells you all off a sudden that you need to visit a website after you are done setting up the device. But that's what Crypto Jay's HW did.

On the fake website, he was asked to enter his seed, and guess what? He did.

If this story is true, I am sorry the dude got social engineered in giving the thieves the essentials to empty his wallets. If not, this is a pathetic way to gain popularity, likes, and subscribers. I think it's the former to be honest.
2650  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What is the biggest problem you think AI can fix in gambling on: March 23, 2023, 04:22:55 PM
I think players could use AI to their advantage to show how likely it is that certain events can happen. Such data sets have to be available, of course, because AI technology can only provide answers to questions that were already covered somewhere. AI doesn't make things up. It just gives you the correct calculations based on the data it has.

I am thinking of things like:

1. Tell me the percentage and number of games that team A has conceded a goal with this exact defensive lineup?
2. How often have this attacking pair scored one or more goals when they played together in the league this season?
2651  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Migrating Ledger Live to new laptop on: March 23, 2023, 02:08:23 PM
Of course, it's safe if the whole thing works on the new device, in fact you made a wallet/s recovery and the old laptop can only represent an additional risk.
Not exactly. In this particular case, OP didn't need to recover his wallet from seed. His Nano X works and holds the seed and private keys. He only changed his laptop. By installing Ledger Live on the new laptop, he would only need to connect the already preconfigured Nano X. After installing the needed coins and scanning his accounts, his balances would be updated. The seed was always in the device regardless the change of laptop.
2652  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: March 23, 2023, 01:51:54 PM
Coinjoins are not "very select parties" where 10 people are "specifically chosen" to attend.  It's the exact opposite:  Coinjoins are open parties where the dancers specifically choose which party to attend.
If they are allowed to enter. They are public parties you can freely enter if you fulfill the requirements of their co-host. The co host checks your clothes, your date, how much you weigh, how your hair smells, and the color of your eyes. If everything is OK, you can come in. Our partners will keep a close eye on you though. If we notice something iffy about you or something we don't like, you aren't coming in to our free public party. The co-host is a symbol for Wasabi's blockchain analysis partner.
2653  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Thinking of separating my holdings into two physical locations. on: March 23, 2023, 01:36:01 PM
hopefully those nfl players have good tax filing skills because they're going to need them when they report all their trades to the IRS.
I seriously doubt they do. But they have tax advisors who take care of those things for them. All the athletes so is sign the papers. In many cases without even reading the content.

I remember when Messi was in court in Spain a few years ago for tax evasion for money he eared through his image rights. His lawyers (intentionally or not) didn't declare all the money. It was reported that he said I don't know what they are doing, it's none of my business. I just sign the papers they give me. They have no clue what is going on because other people handle such tasks for them.
2654  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Sparrow wallet update 1.7.3 on: March 23, 2023, 01:24:15 PM
I did, and I was able to sign no problem. It just alarmed me that maybe there was some malware in the wallet update.
Unfortunately, that's not something that anyone can say for sure. You said you verified the signatures, which means that the newest update was signed by the right person or people. What was signed is something completely different though.

Generally, there shouldn't be a reason to worry. Anti viruses have in the past tagged software wallets as malware-infected. We have all read about it. Even Electrum and Bitcoin Core has been tagged as such.

2656  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Sparrow wallet update 1.7.3 on: March 22, 2023, 06:52:47 PM
Try turning off your antivirus software while working with Sparrow wallet and see if that helps. Disable real-time protection, the firewall, and whatever else there is. If you are on Windows, your OS might automatically activate Windows Defender once it notices that no other AV software is operational. You may or may not have to do the same with Windows Defender.

What antivirus are you using software are you using?
2657  Other / Off-topic / Re: very critical decision to make in my life on: March 22, 2023, 06:43:24 PM
I saw an interesting meme some time ago with a text that goes, "Education is important, but big biceps are importanter."

If you can't spot the mistake, it will probably do you good to spend a few more years in school or to learn English.
Focus on yourself and on making your life better. If those studies can help you land a better job, go for it. There will always be time for bitcoin. And even if there isn't, it's not the end of the world. But bitcoin alone isn't going to help you if you can't put food on the table and support yourself and/or your family.

I hope you will get to wherever you want to go.
2658  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: ledger nano with electrum - from old to new PC on: March 22, 2023, 06:31:16 PM
it might be an idea to try the procedure of doing it with a new ledger?
So as to have a kind of backup copy?
I see no point in that to be honest. Your backup is the paper where your seed is written down. You can have 10 different recovery phrases and only one device, and it would work. It would be a pain in the ass to keep resetting them to input a different backup, but it works. Replacing the Nano S would only be necessary if you have those old firmware versions that Lucius mentioned in his post.

Ledger nano S is not manufactured anymore and it is probably going to be unusable soon, since ledger is slowly increasing size of their apps all the time.
Actually, the newest Bitcoin app that they released a few weeks ago is smaller. The size shrank from 62kb to 56kb if I remembered the numbers correctly. I was surprised to see it.
2659  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: ledger nano with electrum - from old to new PC on: March 21, 2023, 02:20:57 PM
So is it important in the future to continue to update ledger and electrum?
It's generally always better to use an up-to-date software than an outdated one. New versions include better stability, performance updates, bug & vulnerability fixes, new and improved features, etc.

When it comes to Ledger HWs, there are 3 things that can be updated.

  • The native Ledger Live app
  • The Bitcoin coin app
  • The firmware of the device

If you wait too long, you might reach a point where you wont be able to use your Nano to update it to the latest firmware. Question is, will the old ones still be useful? To avoid potential trouble, update it. Update the BTC on-Ledger coin app as well. I am not sure if you need the newest Ledger Live versions before being offered a firmware upgrade. I never tested it.

is there anything that can go wrong with the procedure?
Worst case scenario, you brick the device and it breaks, becoming useless. Happens rarely. A more common issue (happened only once to me) is that the device wipes its memory clean after the upgrade. No need to worry if that happens. Just recover your accounts from seed and you are good to go.

For example, when you use Electrum versions older than 3.3.4, currently that version is vulnerable to phishing (https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/4968). You should immediately use the above or the last version.
It's worth mentioning that those older Electrum versions can no longer connect to Electrum servers so they can't get the phishing messages that point unsuspecting users to fake phishing sites anymore.
2660  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi wallet hacked, all funds stolen on: March 21, 2023, 02:00:56 PM
How do you hold them liable or prove it, they are closed source and you cannot verify their codes or check if they did something behind the scenes that caused the loss, so there is no case to even begin with. And i am sure their terms of service would read that they are not "liable for any customers loss"...
I don't know any wallet that can be held responsible for the actions of its users, open or closed-source. If Coinomi (or any other wallet for that matter) was stealing money left and right, you would have hundreds of people finding this forum the same way OP did and sharing their stories of waking up one day and noticing all their crypto was gone. But we don't have that.

I think the most nefarious client that is often mentioned in the scam accusation board is Freewallet.
