2701  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: I lose my btc if I forget my 24 word password for ledger on: April 04, 2018, 03:48:32 PM
Hi there.  I meant like this

You use lastpass or keepass.  You store all your passwords there such as gmail, banking and any other site.  Thus only thing you need to remember is your password or master password.  Now if you log into lastpass or keepass, then say you store your seed in that wallet.  Now when you log into say dropbox or say gmail, then go to your google drive account, upload their lastpass or keepass file into it... and the lastpass or keepass is encrypted since you cannot open it without the password, that is safe or not?  Because assuming you don't encrypt the lastpass or keepass file, by that you mean encrypt it, then its not safe?  Thus someone could read the lastpass or keepass file?

Well you have a copy of lastpass or keepass in your computer and most likely a usb stick or external hard drive.  So when you say why would you upload a copy to your email or dropbox etc, well its a digital copy in case something happens to your laptop or usb stick or external hard drive.  Thus if you lost all these items, you could still log into your dropbox or gmail and then open your lastpass or keepass as long as you remember the password for both.  So that is bad idea?  Again im not talking about you typing out your seed in gmail and then sending it to yourself and anyone who hack your password can read it.  That would be a very bad idea etc.
2702  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gemini Verification Questions? on: April 04, 2018, 02:16:38 PM
Hi thanks for the response.  Are you from the US?  Also, so for now you are using sms verification.  But did you already send them verification documents and already verified with gemini?  So now you log in, you use sms as 2fa verification.  But are you going to use authy later on and not use the sms anymore?  I read that authy is much better than sms.  You could also use google authy right?

Okay so if you switch to authy and no longer have access to the cell number you used to verify with sms, could you still use authy or not is basically my main question to log into your gemini account.  Thus let say after you use a real sms number with authy to do verification... then you no longer have access to it.  Could you still log into gemini without an active phone number or not?  What if you change the number?  What if you change the number to a google voice number?

2703  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How long does a nano ledger s last? on: April 04, 2018, 05:12:24 AM
Hi there thanks for that information.  But if you are done with it you should not leave the nano ledger s stuck in the usb port then right?  Thus once you are done using it, just pull it out?  And thats exactly what you should do... pull it out from the usb port since its not a flash drive?

Because i wondered was it bad if i just leave it plugged into my laptop all day or just leave it plugged in when not using it.  That is probably bad idea right or it doesn't matter.

I just thought about something else.  So you can put the 24 word seed in electrum if your device doesn't work or gets stolen or malfunction to get your bitcoin.  Now what if you have other coins like bitcoin cash, litecoin, or those other type of coins?   Then how would you claim your bitcoin cash?  Which wallet would you have to download if you don't have another nano ledger s?  For litecoin, it would be electrum for litecoin right?  Now what if its all those other type of coins and not the popular ones.  What happens there?  So if you have like other coins, you have to download some other wallets in order to get it?  The thing that is confusing is wouldn't certain coin wallets not have 24 word seeds and have lesser word seeds?   Say you have dash and quantum.  Well electrum isn't going to work for that right?  So if someone has like 10 plus different coins, they going to need to download 10 different plus wallets assuming they cannot get another nano ledger s?
2704  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If I lost my 24-word phrase for ledger nano s on: April 04, 2018, 03:50:55 AM
To those of you that say its the worst idea to write the 24 word seed in gmail... i would agree with this because someone could hack your account.  However, if you use say lastpass or keepass and then put the seed in either program, isn't that pretty safe?  Thus the hacker would not only need to know your gmail address, they need your gmail password.  Then they would need your password to either your lastpass or keepass.  So wouldn't that be pretty safe?  Or that could still be hacked?

Because they would have to go through 2 layers of security right?  Also isn't it true if someone logs into your gmail account from another location, gmail would block them if they don't recognize the ip address or country etc?  So wouldn't that be another hurdle for that hacker?  And even if they get through that, how could they hack the password for lastpass or keepass then?  Are there cases of this?  Because i have heard of cases where someone types their seed and emails it to their gmail account like in plain letters... that is bad since its not even encrypted.  But with lastpass or keepass, isn't that pretty safe then?

The thing is shouldn't you always have a digital backup?  Because in case something happens physically to your items?
2705  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gemini Verification Questions? on: April 04, 2018, 03:49:56 AM
Gemini tells me i need to use an sms number to get verfiication.  They said google voice number won't work nor any other voip.  However, does anyone know if this is a 1 time thing or not?  Thus if you use authy to log in as 2fa, do you need that number that you used to receive the sms verification code?  Because authy is connected to a cell number right?  So authy has to be connected to that exact number or not?

Thus could i use a number for sms verification.  But then use my authy on my phone to log in?  Does authy have to be connected to a phone number or not?  Or its only email?
2706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your 24 word phrase? on: April 04, 2018, 03:42:05 AM
If you have 2 safety deposit boxes at 2 different banks, would you say its close to 100 percent safe if you leave one piece in each safety deposit box?  I heard people mention this.  Because in order for anything to happen to it, the thief would need to get access to 2 different banks.  However, the thing is if it was accessed, you wouldn't have a clue because its not like if you leave cash there, well you find out the cash is gone.  Because someone could just write down the words or take picture etc.

But if you leave it in 2 different safety deposit boxes at 2 different banks, thats pretty much as safe as you can get?  But even if you do that, should you still keep a copy of it at home just in case?  Because say something happens to that deposit box and your seed and its gone.   Then your wallet stops working such as nano ledger s, then aren't you screwed?

Because there doesn't seem to be any way where its very good safety measures here.  Like if you leave it in your home, well there could be a fire etc.  If you leave it online encrypted, say in your google or dropbox but do so with using a program like lastpass or keepass encrypted... then wouldn't that be pretty safe?  That way you don't have to worry about anything physically happening to it?  Has there been cases where ppl type their 24 word phrase in say lastpass or keepass and kept it in say gmail or some other cloud service and got hacked?  But that person would need to hack not only gmail or other email, but also the lastpass and keepass.  Thoughts on this?
2707  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / How long does a nano ledger s last? on: April 04, 2018, 03:21:03 AM
Doe anyone know how long it last?  For example doesn't the battery wear out after x amount of years?  Has anyone's nano ledger s malfunctioned and reset itself when connected to their laptop?  Has anyone's nano ledger s malfunctioned and reset itself just like that?  I'm curious who here has a ledger s the longest.  I mean is it going to last a long time assuming you don't damage it?  Also is it fine if you keep it like a usb stick and just put it in a bag or you have to protect it by putting it in the nano ledger s box if say you are bringing it with you?  Because its like a keychain so i assume it doesn't need much protection?  Like even if it drops on floor, its fine?

I know if you have the private key, then you are fine if something happens to your ledger s.  But obviously having the device is pretty important.

But say if you lost the private key or cannot find it, the first thing you should do is immediately transfer the btc from your nano ledger s to say an electrum wallet?  Like say you cannot find the seed or think its compromised.  What is the first thing you should do assuming your nano ledger s works and you have it.  Because you cannot transfer it to another nano ledger s wallet since you have to reset it right?  So you basically need like electrum or coinbase?

Another thing i want to ask is this.  When you connect the nano ledger s to a usb port on your laptop or computer, how do you pull it out where you don't damage it or the usb port?  Do you first close the bitcoin wallet ledger program first and then just pull it out of usb port?  Or you just pull it out of usb port?  Because with usb stick and external hard drive, you are suppose to eject it first to make it safe to pull it out.  But with the nano ledger s, i don't believe there is that option right?  So you basically just pull it out from the usb port?

I ask this because if you keep pulling it out, then aren't you going to increase the chance you damage it etc?

I would like to know how many people here had to get a replacement nano ledger s and what was the reason?  Obviously if you get it stolen or lost it, well thats a different situation.  I mean like if you damage it, or break it or it just doesn't work anymore.  How common is this?  Because last time when i did an update to the firmware, it frozed and i thought everything was stuck because of that update.

Would like feedback on this and also any tips on taking care of the nano ledger s.  I assume you could just treat it like a usb stick right?

Can someone explain the flash drive exactly how its done?
2709  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Buy the Dip - again... on: April 02, 2018, 06:29:34 PM
Thoughts on buying the dips on altcoins vs bitcoin?  Thus buy btc and immediately buy an altcoin with it?

Any thoughts on buying this now?  Price went down a lot for it.
2711  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your 24 word phrase? on: April 02, 2018, 04:18:59 PM
You say don't put it on google or dropbox.  Well what if you use a program like lastpass or keepass?  Thus someone would not only need your password for you google or dropbox account, they would need the password for your lastpass or keepass.  Isn't that going to be very hard or is that really possible?
2712  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your 24 word phrase? on: April 02, 2018, 03:21:52 PM
Are safe deposit boxes much more safer than at home?  Because i heard cases of these deposit boxes getting drilled in banks.  But here is the thing though.  If you have cash there, well thieves could take it.  But say you put half your seed there, well that person doesn't even need to take your piece of paper.  They could just take a picture or write it down etc.  But of course the issue is they would need the other seed in a completely different bank.   And let say you check the deposit box once in a while, you would never know if it was compromised right?  However if you leave it in 2 or 3 banks, that surely would be very hard or close to impossible?

So based on that if you leave it in your house or apartment but just put it in strange places, is that better or worst than 2 safe deposit boxes?
2713  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buy when market is Red on: April 01, 2018, 02:49:47 AM
Thoughts on doing this with altcoins vs bitcoin?  Seems like its probably a better idea because altcoins are much more volatile?
2714  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gdax/Gemini 2FA and Verification on: March 31, 2018, 04:35:09 PM
tryninja, gemini first requires you to input an sms number first.  I believe once you do that, you get an sms text message to your number with the code and then you input it and then you would send in your verification documents etc.  so i cannot do this without a sms phone number first.

thus let say i get a number solely for this purpose as a pay as you go plan.  Well i would buy a sim card for my unlocked iphone to do this.  but if i no longer use this number anymore... which i don't, then i would have issues?  that is my problem here.  But im confused do you need an active cell phone number in order to use authy?  And even if you do, if you change the number, that should be no issue then right?
2715  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Altcoins Under $1 on: March 31, 2018, 04:32:41 PM
What market cap would you guys recommend though?
2716  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gdax/Gemini 2FA and Verification on: March 31, 2018, 04:29:41 PM
tryninja, yes i know you need your cell phone to log in with 2FA.  I meant do you have to have that original cell phone number you used to verify with gemini.  I know about google auth and authy.

the issue is gemini tells me you need to first verify with them with your cell phone number.  I have a google voice number but it doesn't work with them, they said it cannot be any type of voip number etc.  I had no issues with coinbase or any other site with my google voice number.  Because after i verify with this number, i would use google authy or authy to do 2FA and not my sms number.  They tell me even if thats the case, i still need access to my original cell phone number to log in.  So is that correct or not?  Because now i think of it, it is because the google authy or authy is connected to your cell phone number right?  So for example say the phone number you used with authy... you no longer have that number anymore or lost access to it and either have no phone number or had to get a new phone number.  So could you still use authy with your gemini account as long as you have that backup phrase if you lost your phone?  Or say your sim card no longer work for your phone and you dont have access to that cell phone number.  Could you still use authy for gemini or coinbase etc?

my point was i only have a google voice number and sms works but not with gemini.  So if thats the case, they said i cannot borrow someones phone to receive the text code, then i send them verification documents and then use authy as my 2fa.  So they are correct in this or not?  The other thing is would there be issue if i buy a cheap number just to get verified with gemini.  Thus imagine i pay 10 dollars for sim and the phone number and say its a pay as you go phone.  Use it as verification.  Then once i do that, send gemini my documents and get verified.  But the authy app has to be linked only to that new number i got?  Because i would use it for that, then it would not work anymore most likely since i won't use it anymore.  So if that phone number isn't active, then i can no longer log into my gemini?  Couldnt i just change the phone number in my authy app to my google voice number afterwards?  Because gemini would no longer send me sms message anymore right?  Since everything is now authy?  Because i have no purpose of getting a new cell number because im out of the country sometimes and thus i use google voice for everything such as call us and text.
2717  Economy / Exchanges / Re: 2017 Bitcoin Debit Card Reviews on: March 31, 2018, 04:07:37 AM
Any bitcoin debit card recommendations for US people?

Also using it while outside the US?

I heard of bitpay but are they still good?
2718  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of ways to cash out bitcoin to US bank account? on: March 31, 2018, 04:06:08 AM
So i was going to use gemini.  They told me i need an actual sms us number in order to get verified.  They tell me a google voice number which i receive text with no issue would not work.  Not only that, they told me i need that number everytime i log in.  Is that true or false gemini users?  I said could i borrow someones cell phone number since i only need to receive this text once since afterwards, im sending in my verification documents, they said no thats not allowed due to privacy reasons.  I said okay so could i buy a cell number and use it but then dont use it anymore?  They said no because you always need an active cell number if you want to log in.  Can someone here confirm this is true or not?  Because that makes zero sense.
2719  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gdax/Gemini 2FA and Verification on: March 31, 2018, 04:03:41 AM
Anyone?  Do you need to have your cell phone everytime you log in gemini?
2720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your 24 word phrase? on: March 31, 2018, 03:48:19 AM
First off, how can anyone remember their 24 word phrase?  That is just ridiculous.

Okay so if someone has access to a safety deposit box at a bank or say 2 or 3 banks, then would that be the ideal situation?  Thus put half the seed in one deposit box and the other half seed in the other half?

One issue would be if a thief drills and get access to safety deposit boxes right?  But even if somehow do this, they still need the other 12 words.  So i mean unless both your safety deposit boxes gets accessed, then you are pretty safe right?
