That's true faucets are simply waste of time and they will pay you in peanuts, its good for newbies but it is very time consuming, better option is to start earning from signature campaigns.
Faucets are nice to get used to how it works, but in the end you'll work months for a few dollars. And with the rising transaction fees, you can barely spend the money, as a large part of small inputs is needed to pay the fee again.

Do what SISAR says.Every second you keep using this computer, you lower the chance of recovering files. Turn it off. Now. Get another computer, plug in the disk, and start your search from there.
Oh, in the future: make backups!

Remove the Intel OpenCL this way, seems you installed this manually...:
$ sudo rm /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opencl-vendor-intel.conf $ sudo ldconfig
after this, go to the vanitygen folder: $ make clean && make Done $ rm *.oclbin
The second command removes the compiled OpenCL kernel for your GPU which dosnt work anyway, always remove it when changing drivers/rebuilding, otherwise you'll end up using an old OpenCL kernel. I have no file ending on oclbin. Now back to your first line: You will have to install the packages i've told you. nvidia-libopencl1-352 should show "installed". Installing nvidia-libopencl1-352 removes ocl-lcd-libopencl1. After this: # dpkg --get-selections | grep opencl nvidia-libopencl1-352 install nvidia-opencl-icd-352 install ocl-icd-libopencl1:amd64 deinstall opencl-headers install Now, try again and post the results.
I now get this: make oclvanitygen cc -ggdb -O3 -Wall -c -o oclvanitygen.o oclvanitygen.c cc -ggdb -O3 -Wall -c -o oclengine.o oclengine.c oclengine.c: In function ‘vg_ocl_prefix_check’: oclengine.c:1553:18: warning: variable ‘tablesize’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] int orig_delta, tablesize; ^ cc oclvanitygen.o oclengine.o pattern.o util.o -o oclvanitygen -ggdb -O3 -Wall -lpcre -lcrypto -lm -lpthread -lOpenCL /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lOpenCL collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [oclvanitygen] Error 1 Error "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lOpenCL" is what I've had before, and so far if I got rid of this error I got an oclvanitygen that can't find a platform. Any more suggestions are much appreciated

I store most of mine on dedicated rigs setup to host a wallet. Stripped down to only the essential OS (linux) and the bitcoin client with a strong passphrase (different) setup on all of them. I only log in and connect to the internet, through a heavily configured firewall, when I need to transact. I currently have two of these setup with most of my holdings spread across them equally.
I have been considering a paper wallet, I do have one I made that has a tiny amount of BTC on it, but still think log-term storage to be an issue along with what can happen to it. Even laminated it could get destroyed.
I doubt your dedicated rigs will last longer than a simple piece of paper! Laminating doesn't help much, the only thing that can really destroy it, is fire, and laminating won't help you there. You could drill a QR-code in a titanium plate to withstand fire. Something like this: Or just make multiple copies of a paper wallet, but that increases the risk of being compromised.

While searching for "faucets" I got Address: 1 FAUCEtSUck1nRj95C5UPKspiM3Qz55ob6. Irony when searching for something

I just found 1LimeLightHA2NqDu5hxu1RN9c78qiL97V ( blockchain). So far the longest real word with the right case I have found Brute-force on my i3 CPU! 50% chance in 200 years, so I'm quite happy with it, even though I don't have a direct use for it.

What exactly do you agree with? At first I thought you meant patronizing Shorena but then you say you'll do it for free? I agree that legendary member Shorena is a. cheaper and b. sounds much more reliable. It's not possible as your time and electricity are worth money. It's just fun
|
|
|
Shorena is already offering such a service, for a pretty reasonable rate too. I don't think anyone will choose a newbie over a legendary member patronized by nearly everyone
I agree. Although it's nice to see he does it in a secure way, 4 digit addresses are barely worth anything. It took me 3 seconds to generate Address: 1CAT5XoxNBaSuTp9NT3JW1Z3DJ9nbD4qSe, and that's on CPU only. I recently found addresses starting with 1Larceny, 1History, 1EUREKAS, 1Pistons, 1cheques and the hardest one to find: 1Lacerate. Those are a lot harder to find, if you could offer 6 digits for 0.9 mBTC I think there may be a market for it. If I ever get my Nvidia to join the search, I may set it up for free.

For mainstream adoption this sort of thing needs to be effectively impossible.
People lose bitcoins in a lot of ways, see this topic: How many Bitcoins are lost forever?, this fee-mistake is just a fraction of what's lost in total. So why would this be a problem for mainstream adoption? People have been losing cash money for centuries, and cash is still around.

I found one of those blocks yesterday by accident. I knew like 4.7 BTC fee in one block was a lot, but I didn't know how to find which transaction caused it (and I didn't want to go through it manually). I notice something interesting: two transactions with 4 Bitcoin fee, within 29 seconds apart. And one of them is included 10 blocks later than the other. In other words: does a higher fee really help for a faster transaction? What were those miners thinking skipping this one for so long? I always believed a higher fee would give a higher priority, but apparently even 4 Bitcoin fee gives no guarantee to be included in the next few blocks!

How can I be sure about this? $ dpkg --get-selections | grep opencl Ensure the nvidia package is installed. nvidia-libopencl1-352 deinstall nvidia-opencl-icd-352 install ocl-icd-libopencl1:amd64 install opencl-headers install Nvidia installed. I wonder about the amd though, as my system runs on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4010U CPU @ 1.70GHz I wouldnt be surprised if your ldconfig prefers the intel OpenCL first, which would break things. Why did you install it anyway? Desperation I tried so many things I found online, hoping one would work. Try it this way:
$ gcc oclvanitygen.o oclengine.o pattern.o util.o -o oclvanitygen -ggdb -O3 -Wall -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -lpcre -lcrypto -lm -lpthread -lOpenCL Done in 90 ms, without errors. But still no available OpenCL platforms: ./oclvanitygen 1test Difficulty: 264104224 clGetPlatformIDs(0): Unknown code -1001 clGetPlatformIDs(0): Unknown code -1001 Available OpenCL platforms: if this also dosnt work, we'll have to locate and remove that intel OpenCL first from the ldconfig. $ grep -R -E "OpenCL|intel" /etc/ld.so.conf*
I like the "we" in this, thanks for your help so far! # grep -R -E "OpenCL|intel" /etc/ld.so.conf* /etc/ld.so.conf.d/opencl-vendor-intel.conf:/usr/lib/OpenCL/vendors/intel I feel clueless

Sure, but before I change the address please sign the following message
I was afraid you'd ask this I can't sign it, as the address I used was one of my rollin-accounts' deposit address. I'll PM you.

Yesterday I found a new block with almost 5 bitcoin in fees (usually it's 0.25 to 0.5 per block), so there too I think someone must have made a huge mistake.

Confirmation time is the biggest issue.
A year ago I would get 1000 sat or even zero fee transfers confirmed within one or just a few blocks. Currently 10,000 sat is not even enough to get a confirmation within 10 hours. In my opinion this can only be solved by allowing more transactions per second, which means either larger blocks or more blocks.

Since a few days, Bitcoin Core 0.12.0 is available. Also since a few days, transactions take much longer to be confirmed. The new Bitcoin Core has a much higher recommended fee. I think this is the cause of the delays: if you don't join the higher fee, you lose priority. I just saw this block being mined: 25 BTC block-reward, and 4.67004169 BTC fees. That is 2000 dollar or almost 20% of the block reward! Are miners using the limited block size to force users to pay much more, so the halving will hurt them less? I know this block had much more fees than average, which is why I picked this one to demonstrate.

install these packages and recompile (make clean && make): nvidia-libopencl1-352 nvidia-opencl-icd-352

2. I would like to make a copy of the 'paper' wallet .pdf file and store it in the cloud, so I can restore it in case I lose the USB pen drive. Is there a safe way to do that? I know that the wallet can not be considered 'Cold' anymore once I do so, but I don't want to rely on this one usb pen drive only.
I would just print the PDF, paper lasts much longer than a USB-stick. Or, just write the private key down in a book, inside a wall, at the back of a wall-mounted (empty?) safe, or anywhere else nobody would guess.

That is really cool I will try this out in Burger King Utrecht in the Netherlands.
You'll be disappointed, try Arnhem.
