2721  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Piooner, Hal Finney and Eight Years Remembrance on: August 30, 2022, 09:15:02 AM
I found his wife on twitter she last updated her running bitcoin logs on January 10th, the Running bitcoin challenge hashtag is alive but not frequently updated. Fran Finney is an amazing woman and she is doing a lot to keep the legacy of Hal Finney.

The running bitcoin sculpture created by Marcus Connor last year for the remembrance of Hal Finney on his birthday, looks much more like the way Finney ran for bitcoin in his days.

 "Lifetime Achievement Award" Hal received at PGP in October 2009. (Phil Zimmermann on left)

Hal Finney with Fran Finney

The Marathon man

I guess a thread about Hal Finney's remembrance won't be complete without amazing pictures of Hal and his Wife Fran being shared on the thread to help us have a virtual memory of him.  A great man in the bitcoin, cryptography and privacy department of the internet.

Got the pictures from Fran Finney's official twitter page.

2722  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin market only surviving picture taken 11 years ago today! on: August 26, 2022, 03:26:11 PM
After the initiation of Faucet where traders were gifted 5 btc each, the integration of bitcoin exchange began with bitcoin market as the first exchange in the cryptocurrency market launched 2010. Buyers sent Paypal to the bitcoin seller then the exchange holds the funds until the sellers gets the funds. So they served as Escrow during the period. And it was the only exchange that is similar to the exchange of today.

2723  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The impact of exchanges and payment gateways to Bitcoin adoption in NIG/CAR on: August 26, 2022, 01:46:53 PM
Like Franky1 said; they should be careful with storing funds on exchanges, referring to the period binance banned Nigerian accounts, many traders lost money. Africans love to use cryptocurrency and the adoption is increasing in the region but, many trade on exchanges for quick money and some know little about trading that's why they store funds on exchanges as they feel its secure. But given time, practice makes perfect, they'll learn to trade better and make profits. On the other hand, cryptocurrency scam, which is also an impact, is increasing in Africa alongside the adoption. Some peer2peer traders who advertise on social Media platforms like Instagram fail to deliver funds to customers, and they is no means of tracing them. Therefore, Africans are advised not to adopt crypto with shallow experience, they are multiple victims everyday on social media platforms especially on telegram complaining about being ripped of their funds due to selfish interest, invest $100 to get $1000 kind of con keeps recurring on daily basis.
2724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How is this 9000btc mistake a donation to the bitcoin network? on: August 25, 2022, 05:58:29 PM
This mistake by Stone man a member of this forum 12 years ago is worth $200 million dollars today and the articles I read about it even the thread doesn't stick, I don't understand, how he lost the funds, its plainly written on the article I read about it that such mistake cannot occur now. But, does it mean that they are things we enjoy today that was not put in place 12 years ago. The backup issues, so a transaction must be backed up after sending to a specific address? Went through the thread here but, the terms are not familiar to me. A basic explanation will help about how we stopped backing up wallet.dat to be able to restore? Thanks.

2725  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto Currency acceptance Everywhere on: August 25, 2022, 04:16:37 PM
Its simple to say that the taxation is too much, but, ideas differs, imagine the kiosk owner to be a cryptocurrency trader. It doesn't stop him from trading while doing a real life business. For instance, I open a shop in my street or somewhere, I'll definitely accept bitcoin because its useful to my side business, trading cryptocurrency, many traders are going into real life businesses and it'll help disseminate  the use of bitcoin. In the world of economy today, a little business added to your online business can make a huge difference to your earnings, and when that happens you are likely to accept bitcoin. In a nutshell, I think those who accept bitcoin know what to do with bitcoin regardless of the volatility.
2726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 12 years ago mined 50 Bitcoin just moved on: August 25, 2022, 04:02:29 PM
The profit is huge imagine from 50 cent to $1 million, Hodling Is the only sure method on cryptocurrency. I think he had something else that consumed his time that made him not to focus on selling his bitcoin even when the price hit 60k. One other criterion that energises Hodling bitcoin is the access to different earnings or income. Like I said, he could be a business man.
2727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Satoshi Nakamoto Reveal his identity ............ ? on: August 20, 2022, 06:43:58 PM
Satoshi is a computer scientists who has achieved his dream. In my opinion, he could be in the blue zone where nobody can trace him except those that kept him there. I don't think Satoshi ghosted himself, it could be a security department hid him from the world, changed his Identity and put him in a different environment. Just like when a person is in the BLUE ZONE they will be no traces whatsoever about that person. If he is responsible for his disappearance, he is human and must go against one of his disciplines. Or move a lot of money to fund his living. I don't know what happened to him but its likely that he is under a certain control over his movements.
2728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Somewhere in Nigeria, Bitcoin's touching lives on: August 19, 2022, 08:37:09 AM

Needless to say that the community is going to enjoy the 'clean water' provided by this project, but what i am not so sure is if they will be interested in the network that those behind this project are trying to promote and bring the knowledge of to their doorsteps, i feel that is our biggest problem concerning adoption in rural African communities, they have many problems with daily livelihood, and they want it solved and that is that, but can they think about 'freedom with bitcoin', i don't think so.

You are right and at same time your thoughts about this investment is short term. A picture they say portrays thousands of words. In the picture above they are brilliant kids who will never forget about this bitcoin based project that removed, in their childhood, the stress of fetching water from a very far stream. Those kids to me is the reason for the project. They will never grow up without acknowledging bitcoin, when been discussed by peer they'll definitely refer to a time when bitcoin was used to sponsor a water project in their village. I'm glad that the banner has bitcoin logo on it, when the kids go to fetch water and see the logo it sticks to their long term memory which will never be forgotten. The grown ups like you said may not be interested in the freedom bitcoin effects for a better livelihood in Africa. But, for the kids they'll definitely embrace bitcoin at adolescent age and we are talking 7-8 from now.
2729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why I have bought Bitcoin ? on: August 19, 2022, 07:09:01 AM
One thing in this world I've not heard got interested in the blockchain network is religion. Now a religious is here, if dedicated, you can think of a strategy to implement a religious ecosystem other than charity, though important, prayers do wonders. If they Is a selected amount of monks that meditates and pray for the Bitcoin ecosystem it'll go a long way as they are many challenges, ill stories, and disputes going on in the market which your spirituality can be of great help to resolve gradually.
2730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The implications of cryptocurrency on the global economy on: August 14, 2022, 08:44:51 PM
The global economy will leave the hands of the government to the hands of cryptocurrency market makers I think it's the reason the government won't legalize cryptocurrency. In addition the block chain technology will help many institutions like the health sectors keep record, they'll be more job opportunities available for the skilled. Many will get employed without degree. So except for the bullish and bearish state of cryptocurrency, the blockchain network if adopted by the world it'll boost the global economy.

2731  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netskope's Recommendation Against Cryptocurrency Theft. on: August 14, 2022, 03:37:28 PM
Scam is a niche, just like cryptocurrency is a niche on the Internet so Scam is a different part of the internet that cannot be eradicated as everything is hackable and people will definitely fall for any kind of con that promise them huge amount of money within a short period. So the only solution is to moderate it and continue spreading the news that cryptocurrency is not a get rich quick scheme.

Plus, the service is custodial, a point that works against the Bitcoin ethos of “not your keys, not your coins.” So, he is looking for a way to use SIM cards as private keys.

Using Sim cards as private keys is a red flag, though the technology will help disseminate the use of Bitcoin in Africa as the use of USSD is rampant than the mobile app usage or even internet banking in Africa. On the other hand if a phone is stolen the Sim card which is the private key can be compromised and the person's fund will be missing forever. I think with time everything will be put in place, it's a new innovation.
2733  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: CHINA is against the crypto But JAPAN is Supporting crypto echo system . on: August 13, 2022, 01:24:23 PM
China as a country is different from China as in people. The government is against Bitcoin but the people in China make use of Bitcoin they are many miners in China and they have lots of investment in the ecosystem. Just that volatility made the government ban cryptocurrency to avoid massive number of citizens to suffer from loss of money. I don't think China will regret banning cryptocurrency because the people of China are into the technology and trade on exchanges too. I think the government will regret but the people in China that use and invest in cryptocurrency has nothing to lose. However, I don't know who you are referring to in your post if it's the government or the people.
2734  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: LevelDB and blockchain. on: August 12, 2022, 06:46:58 AM
Level DB is a database that works with no SQL which can be used to store data not only for Bitcoin any project can make use of it, as the database is leveled on choosing what key and value you want to store in the program or get from the database. A running Bitcoin node saves Bitcoin related data on block or chainstate directories, then the leveldb can be used to call those files saved in the directory. For instance we can retrieve a bunch of key values from the blocks index using one operation.

Code:
const level = require('level')
const db = level('my-db')

const ops = [
  { type: 'get', key: 'block' },
  { type: 'get', key: 'b'+32, value: 'byte block hash' },
  { type: 'get', key: 'F+4', value: 'byte file number' },
  { type: 'get', key: 'I-4', value: 'byte file number' },
  { type: 'get', key: 't+32', value: 'byte transaction hash' }
]

db.batch(ops, function (err) {
  if (err){
     return console.log(err)
  }
  console.log('Great success')
})
We have an ops array with a bunch of objects to define the operations.

The type is the type of the operation we want to do. They are the same as the method names.

The key is needed for getting the items to delete.

And the value is what we insert as the value of the key

Other additional functions include;

Get- get a key from the database
Put- put a value from the database
Del - delete a key in the current range
L.S- get all the keys in the current range
Start - defines the start of the current range
End - denfine the end of the current range

This will help you get to know leveldb better

2735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Education in the U.S. on: August 12, 2022, 04:11:56 AM
You have to stick around top Bitcoin communities to learn new laws about Bitcoin. Going to read old articles may not help as things keeps evolving around the technology. Keep and eye on Twitter and Reddit then come back here to ask questions regarding topics you don't understand. You can't teach or respond to the literature of Bitcoin without learning about it thoroughly. Put in the time and you'll grasp the knowledge. Welcome back.

I prefer a cryptocurrency whose sole purpose is transferring cash electronically. Don't necessarily want it to be anymore complicated than it needs to be. Don't necessarily want it to have anymore features than are absolutely necessary to achieve that goal. How could bitcoin become outdated? math always works
.

No Software has ever been through the test of time without getting updated. “Maths always work" Yes, because no one formular is subjected to solving a mathematical problem, the goal is to arrive at the right or correct answer. The Bitcoin you want cannot be removed by the new updates that keeps appearing. Think of Satoshi that created Bitcoin out of cryptography and Vitalik made Eth out of the idea of Satoshi etc. The root is open source and any update can pop out as many developers have personal reasons to bitcoin contrary to what you want. They build as they view and nothing will stop it. Don't think it'll get complicated, just like maths, a new formular will be hard to learn immediately, but, sooner or later you'll enjoy using the formular to solve problems. If the formular is difficult, you can stick to the existing fomular you know how to utilize.
2737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The US government is targeting mixers. Are BTC mixers next? on: August 09, 2022, 07:54:28 AM
The US Treasury department is indirectly telling the mixing platform that, “if you are going to allow a lot of illicit activity, we are going to go after you even if there is a lot of legitimate activity" Same thing is applicable to other mixers. As it has been known to everyone including fraudster that mixer help complicate the tracking of a cryptocurrency transaction.

2738  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could bitcoin mining solve climate change? on: August 08, 2022, 02:58:37 PM
Troy Cross is a philosopher that recently joined the twitter cryptocurrency community and know little about bitcoin, though, he claims to know about bitcoin mining but he skipped the first question about the conception of bitcoin mining by saying; they are different meaning to conception and he attended a graduate school where the meaning of conception was the principal topic for a course. The second question he attempted was about the energy consumption of bitcoin he noted that dryers in the USA consume more energy than bitcoin and so on. But, one thing, he got wrong was the bitcoin market capitalization, I don't know when this podcast was recorded, he said the market cap is below a trillion but, its now a trillion dollar as of today. The podcast is long, and the philosopher uses philosophy to answer questions regarding bitcoin something that doesn't interest me.

2739  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador claim bitcoin attracts tourists right or wrong? on: August 07, 2022, 12:15:57 PM

When did they claim this? I cannot find any direct statement in the Cointelegraph article that the inlux of tourists was because of bitcoin becoming a legal tender in the country. Can you quote that part in the washingtonpost article if they said it there. I couldn't open it.

Maybe you skipped this;
Quote
Since El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, thousands of Bitcoiners have made the trip.

I also found a tweet that best suits everyone under the thread that said is not all about bitcoin. El Salvador President said so;

So, I'll need different views on the question though everyone is skeptical if bitcoin is the reason why they is an increase in the number of tourists in the nation. I think the tweet above can reshape your views now, thanks.
2740  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / El Salvador claim bitcoin attracts tourists right or wrong? on: August 07, 2022, 09:08:37 AM
Recently El Salvador confirmed bitcoin magnets tourists to the nation. Claims bitcoin attracted 1.1 million visitors in 6 month was opposed by the wall street journal, saying most visitors never used bitcoin in the bitcoin beach and other stores that accepted bitcoin in the country. Given an example of a small bohemian hotel “Lagarza" owned by Daniel García, who confirmed only 15 bitcoin transaction since it became a legal tender in the country.

He went further saying that most visitors in the country paid with bitcoin to brag, though, it was made known in the article that, some vendors in El Salvador don't have a bitcoin wallet. And the country need to teach citizens how to transact with bitcoin to enable swift transaction.

What could have attracted cryptocurrency tourists to El Salvador if not bitcoin? So I think the wall street journal article covered a small part of El Salvador hotels.
