Since Slush has their Diff made to AUTOMATICALLY adjust, does this mean the S4 will be fine on Slush?

Every decent pool has their difficulty automatically adjust.  The problem is that they all start at a base level and adjust up from there unless the user sets a minimum level/starting level (which most pools also have the ability to change).  If the user keeps the minimum/starting level too low, the S4 will choke to death before it is adjusted to an adequate level.

Thank you, eleuthria.

I just finished reading ck's work around (hack) for the firmware.  He also mentioned it may be a little late at this point in production to fix the hardware issue.  It's rather disappointing news.  I'm not sure what to do at the moment.  I'll have to think on it a while.  I want at least 22 to 25 TH's mining here at my house with as little power consumption as possible.  I liked the sound of the S4 until now.  I'm just not sure anymore.

If I remember correctly, aren't you owner or co-owner of btcGuild?  If so, does your pool allow me to adjust/set the minimum starting level to avoid this issue with the S4?  I know GHash has this ability but I would rather do the guild than hash.

Yes, BTC Guild has had user selectable difficulty on the worker management for ages (just a few days after stratum was announced).

Thank you very much!!!

I'm NEW to mining [September 22, 2014] BUT MOTIVATED!  I have 10 S3's hashing at the moment and 6 more S3's will arrive Friday or Saturday along with PSU's.  I only want to get 8 Bitmain S4's to bring me up to a total of 23.7 TH's and 16,520 watts at the wall in my house.  Looking for a warehouse or something for later to expand my mining farm.

I've only done BTC Guild, Slush, CK'sPool and GHash.  I'm NOT a hopper.  I've just registered and tried several different pools to see what they were like.  I obviously did not look at the "worker" configuration in your pool enough to notice the Diff setting OR I just don't remember it.  I know Slush adjusts automatically and probably starts low then builds up like you said.  So, I know now I will not be pointing S4's towards Slush.

Thanks again for your help!!!

And others say they don't work on Guild...I love how it seems ASICs are becoming even less consistent than their first generation units.
Occasionally they ping us after the fact and expect us to fix their problems.
...which is exactly what happened with the S4...

It turns out the controller is so low powered that it can only process ~30 shares per second which mean that unless diff is set higher, they work their way into a death spiral before diff catches up. Great...

(quoted from another thread)

Is this a problem if one is using an S4 with solo.ckpool.org?

No. S4s work fine here.

As you know, if you monitor, I move my S3's (4.7 TH/s) here on Saturday and/or Sunday after we find at least 5 blocks on Slush.  I had them hooked up this past Sunday for approximately 5 to 6 hours.  Your pool connectivity works great with my S3's.  I intend to choose either Saturday or Sunday to let them mine THE ENTIRE 24 hours after I get more miners in.

I believe you also know I've mentioned getting nothing but S4's from here on out when I buy more miners.  However, you have me a little concerned about them.  It sounds like they work fine on your pool.  Did you have the opportunity to test them on Slush and see if they performed properly?  I would rather use Bitmain BUT I do not want to be pissed off at Bitmain if they do not work on Slush as well as here.  Am I safe getting them?

Your reply is appreciated greatly.

I suppose I have to wait two weeks...  Still don't quite understand it, but thanks.  I'm not concerned much about "status" anyway.

I'm an electrician, portrait artist, percussionist and a telecommunications technical trainer [pays the bills].  I teach telephone technicians how to use their meters to identify and locate troubles on wire-line NOT wire-less.  Most of my training is done for CenturyLink.  They hire me (a contractor) to come in and teach a 4-Day course on the JDSU HST-3000.  It's an $8,500.00 meter.

I used to train 40 to 45 weeks every year.  So, I was on the road a lot.  However, the economy has been sour, causing them to cut budgets.  Training budget is usually one of the first things cut in a sour economy.  Now, I'm fortunate to get 10 to 14 classes in one year.  I get paid well [$4,500.00 approx. after taxes and expense in one week.] WHEN I train.  I only get paid when I train.  It's my own business:  Telecommunications Lighthouse Incorporated.  OUR ECONOMY NEEDS A DAMN BREAK FROM ALL THESE DAMN REGULATIONS AND TAXES.  WE NEED TO GET RID OF THE DAMN IRS AS WELL AND GO TO A FAIR OR FLAT TAX!

I thought I might could bring in some extra lettuce (money) with mining and trading BTC.  Thought it is worth a try anyway.  I remember hearing Glenn Beck telling everyone to buy bit coin back in 2011.  I looked it up and thought about getting a wallet but never followed through with it.  DAMN, do I wish I listened to him.  Now, I'm DETERMINED to get to at least 20 TH/s of mining power by end of January.

I'm also a "handy man."  I have every tool imaginable for all kinds of trades.  Doesn't matter if it is tools for brick masons, wood floor nailer, table saws, jig saws, sanders, planer, all kinds of drills (big and small), plumbing tools, over $4,500.00 worth of scaffolding [I've put new windows and siding on the front and both sides of the house.  All I have remaining is the back of the house now.], I've gutted all 3 baths and installed new toilets, vanities, vanity tops, sinks, faucets, shower heads, tile, towel rods, etc...  I've put down 1,600 square feet of brazilian rosewood and approximately 1,200 square feet of tile.  All new lighting inside and outside of the house as well.  I've been doing a LOT to the house.  I need to finish it!

Just a jack of many trades.  NOT ALL!  Now I'm trying to learn the BTC "trade."   LOL  (mining, etc...)

I predict BTC will be at $475.00 by October 30th...

$540.00 by Thanksgiving

I will take that bet, btc will not even be close to that.

I like your enthusiasm but you need to go to the S4 thread and read all the problems they are having. CK has confirmed it is a hardware problem and did a quick cgminer patch until Bitmain can come up with a firmware work a round which isn't really fixing the problem.

You need to consider the Prisma at 1.4 TH each much better deal and you will come closer to a ROI (noticed I said closer as there is no hardware that currently has a chance to ROI).

Thank You very much for the heads up!!!

ok but doesn't answer the question why would you buy s4's with btc like 4 each instead of only 1250 fiat since 4 btc u believe will be 10k in like 400 days? I'm just asking im neither bullish or bearish on the matter just riding to see where it goes but if I had firm beliefs of that price point I would never spend my hard earned btc for miners that even with very small 5% diff jumps wont make back 4 btc in over a year? I would spend cash as I expect the dollar to do what the dollar does and stay worth a dollar

You make a good point, but I don't have the money at the moment to dish out in US for S4's.  I purchased what I have right now in S3's with all credit card.

I don't want to just spend money on BTC when I'm living pay check to pay check to pay check at the moment for the most part.  I have a little to put aside after pay for a rainy day.  I don't want to use my rainy day funds to buy BTC and WAIT 400 days.

Tongue  good to see our hashrate has gone up..  Wondering how much of a differernce itl be with the next diff rise.      Also my BTC rewards have dropped by about .018-.025 in the past 2 weeks.   Same Hashrate just much lower reward.   Makes sense I guess.  but it sucks a hell of alot.    BTC diff rise = even less reward... But slush is usually good to us so we may have a higher reward for awhile but not long.

Bought an S3,   So im now running about 5 S1s and 1 S3.   Cheesy   Working fantastically.  Just wishing the BTC dif rise would slow down or drop a little bit.
I have a feeling itll be in the 40s in no time.    Hopefully it slows down.  but i have a feeling itll be in the 40s before and if it ever drops.

Tongue   The $/BTC  well.   That im not concerned about....   im moreless concerned about the diff.

Oh well,  im still making profit and thats all I care about, hopefully everyone is to.

Yes, with my 10 S3's and approximately 6.5 PH/s on Slush on September 22nd, I was averaging .01742882 per block found.  NOW, at 8.2 PH/s average during the week and the difficulty going up, I'm averaging .01456133 per block.

That's why I HAD TO get 6 more S3's on eBay REAL QUICK LIKE!!!  NO TIME to wait however long it would take Bitmaintech.com to get Batch 10 out to us.  So, I bought six (6) NEW Batch 9 S3+'s that should all be here no later than Saturday.  I figured I needed to get 6 more instead of 2 more in anticipation of the difficulty going up several more times before batch 10 reaches the door steps AND in anticipation of other pool members adding to their farm as well, which in turn raises our hashing power and diminishes our share percentage.

I'm getting nothing but S4's from here on out and purchasing them with nothing but BTC on Bitmaintech.com!!!!!!!  ALSO, BTC SHOULD BE WORTH MORE AND NOT REQUIRE AS MUCH BTC TO GET AN S4.  I should get their quicker to purchasing S4's with 16 S3's instead of just 10 S3's.  Each time I add an S4 when it arrives, it means I get the next S4 that much faster, and the next S4 even faster... SO ON AND SO ON...

BTC is DESTINED TO GO UP.  WHICH MEANS MINING WILL REMAIN ATTRACTIVE FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.  WHICH MEANS DIFFICULTY WILL CONTINUE TO RISE FOR A LONG TIME TO COME!  WHICH MEANS TOTAL POOL HASHING POWER WILL CONTINUE TO RISE FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.

IN MY OPINION, IF someone intends to mine from home, like myself, they will need 20 TH/s MINIMUM to maintain a decent amount of profitability!
2738  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [9000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: October 09, 2014, 01:18:38 AM
I see BTC EASILY between $1,400.00 to $2,200 a coin by the end of 2015.  It's only destined to go up more and more as the block generation cuts in half each time.

Once block generation stops, I thought this thread addresses it pretty well.

http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/8743/what-happens-to-the-bitcoin-network-when-the-miners-all-stop-in-the-future

Each time the block generation cuts in half, BTC will be worth at least twice what it was before it cut in half.  SERIOUSLY!!!

That article explaining BTC versus gold is convincing enough to me to believe BTC worth will be at least double what it was worth each time the block generation cuts in half.  THEY ARE INVERSELY PROPORTIONATE TO ONE ANOTHER.  SERIOUSLY!!!
