Watching the Democratic debate and Joe Biden is referring to battling the coronavirus a “war”. Brian Mohnihan, CEO of BOA, described the coronavirus crisis as a “war”. Israel PM Netanyahu said his country is at “war” with an invisible enemy, the coronavirus.

I am curious if Trump or other world leaders will describe the coronavirus situation as a “war” and if so, will any country declare war against the coronavirus.

War on an emotion must have lost its oomph.

If the war ostensibly waged on the emotion had the proximate effect of increasing that emotion, what will the War on Plague do?

(I would suggest upgrading to a War on Wars; but Wilson already did that, with the War to End Wars!)
Declaring War on the coronavirus would be largely symbolic, although it may make China and the CCP uncomfortable. It could allow countries to take over factories to produce certain goods (I don’t think this is needed right now, but it may be if there is a shortage of medicines and antibiotics). It would also send a signal to citizens as to how serious the situation is to get citizens to adhere to recommendations that should help slow the spread of the virus.

OT/ some argue that the Cold War was actually WW3. There were a number of proxy wars during the Cold War so that no two nuclear powers were fighting each other and there was the arms race.

2763  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Will all the world hold China responsible for corona-v on: March 15, 2020, 08:44:14 PM
The world owes China a lot of money, but it is also borrowing a lot of money from China on an ongoing basis. If the world were to stop honoring its debts to China, it would need to be ready to not borrow additional money from China.

The biggest barrier to holding China responsible is the fact that economic supply chains can be traced to China. In an all-out economic war with China, they could respond by banning exports, which would cripple most of the world economies. This includes the production of some material required to produce certain medicines and anti-biotics.

Until this supply chain issue is resolved, I don't see China being held responsible in any meaningful way. I would not find it unreasonable for supply chains to be fairly quickly moved out of China after the coronavirus has been resolved.

I would not hold China responsible simply because the virus originated within China. Assuming the coronavirus is not manmade, the virus originating in China is not the Chinese government's fault. The reason I would want to hold the Chinese government responsible is that they suppressed information about the virus for so long, and they censored people who were trying to warn the public about the virus.
2764  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The European Union project seems to have ended. on: March 15, 2020, 08:33:09 PM
My opinion stayed the same over the years. They should have stopped at Schengen. Keep open borders that granted easy and free flow of people and goods within the Union. That's it.
Some EU countries are closing their borders to neighboring EU countries.

The EU failed because it has a weak federal government. The EU states (countries) have long violated various agreements without real consequence and often had to be bailed out by stronger EU states. I don't see the EU states voting to amend the EU constitution to allow for a stronger federal government.

The open borders policy of the EU caused migrants to upend local communities because massive numbers of people came that did not share the values of the community.

the nation states government are even weaker, look at boris johnson, or other nationalist leaders.

and it doesn't make any sense to support them, how is europe saver if there are fenced borders between nation states, while erdogan continue so send his migrant criminals over the evroz
In the UK, the federal government has clear authority that state/local governments do not. The UK federal government has the ability to enforce its laws/regulations on the local governments. This is not true in the EU.

The strength I was referring to was relative strength, not absolute strength. As a general rule, it is best for governments to be weaker in absolute terms (they still must be able to enforce the laws/regulations they do have), and should have few regulations. This is a generalization and will not apply in all situations, such as emergencies.

2766  Economy / Reputation / Re: The BCT PGP/GPG Public Key Database: Stake Your PGP Key Here on: March 15, 2020, 06:45:44 PM

At this point there is no proof that Ploni has access to the secret key, or the ability to sign a message with it.  Anyone can create a GPG key and embed any user name they want into it, but the fact that Spartacus Ploni posted the key and it has his forum ID in it, we can assume that he created the key, and that he has access to the secret key which will allow him to sign messages.  But that's it, all we have is enough to assume, not enough to prove.
By that logic, anyone who has posted a signed message has not proven they control the private key. Anyone can sign a message, and give that message to a third party to pass off as their own.

Based on the fact that the timestamp on the key generation matches the timestamp the account was created, and the UID being part of the userid shows that whoever created the private key intended to show association with the account. The account posting that he controls the GPG private key shows whoever is behind the account is intending to show he controls the private key. This is just as strong of evidence as a signed message.

The timestamp of the generation date is only the timestamp reflected on the computer when it was generated, and this is something that can be trivially changed. When you sign a message, the signed message will contain a small amount of metadata. I assume this is why Ploni doesn't want to provide a signed message.
2767  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Dragnet: A Method for Tagging Bitcoin Addresses of Exchanges on: March 15, 2020, 04:22:16 AM
The point of all this is that a single transaction that connects two addresses together is not necessarily enough to link two businesses together, absent additional evidence.
The paper addresses this issue:
Quote
Although someone would use the CoinJoin method [9] to combine UTXOs from multiple senders into a single transaction to make it more challenging to determine the relationship between input and output addresses, we detect this method has not been adopted by the exchange so far.
I don't think this is a valid assumption. A CJ transaction can consist of two inputs, each from different entities. In 2013, many exchanges were not as professional as they are today, and were dealing with much less customer money.

The OP appears to be interested in weeding out exchanges with fake volume. An exchange with fake volume could possibly pay a whale to conduct a small number of Coin Join transactions to evade detection of their fake volume.

Also, a classification model that is accurate 96% of the time (it is unclear how you are measuring accuracy) has very high accuracy. My first reaction to that high of claimed accuracy is that you might have data leakage. I can't point to the source without looking at your specific steps to train your model, which understandably may not be something you want to share.
I suppose they are presenting a model more than a software. So far, the model seems to me to be solid up to the extent that a good heuristic-based data mining model could be. The implementation is not open and it is not good news, so the results presented are highly suspicious.

For example, consider a conspiracy theory to be true: A shady exchange (such as Bittrex) with very low liquidity and a high incentive to put itself in the top 10 list and faking high volumes of trade, as a part of its scam, hires a team of technical writers and they publish an acceptable analysis model and faking privately generated results in favor of the exchange.

I would recommend that you learn about machine learning. The Wikipedia article will tell you about ML but will be insufficient for you to be able to speak to it coherently.

The CoinJoin problem is really hard to solve. But as we see, nowadays, there is actually no/few CoinJoin in exchanges, especially big exchanges.
This paper has been peer-reviewed by some experts. They also addressed the issue of CoinJoin. But I cannot find a way to solve this issue.
You are correct, the CJ problem is difficult to solve programmatically. You could rule out transactions that have inputs from unique addresses above a threshold and unique output addresses above a threshold. This would not address Bob and Alice's exchange (who is faking volume) from broadcasting a single CJ transaction with two inputs and two outputs.

Once you find address clusters, you could remove a percentage of transactions associated with each address cluster in your data set, and re-run your cluster analysis. If a high enough percentage of addresses are no longer part of the cluster with transactions excluded, you can either flag the address cluster for closer analysis separately, or you can do something such as looping through each transaction that connects the cluster, and each loop removes a single transaction and adds the previous transaction back in (each loop assumes exactly one transaction is removed). If enough loops produce distinct, large clusters, then you may have a 'hidden' CJ transaction.

Obviously the above would be very expensive computational wise and is Big O squared. You might be able to make different assumptions that would make your function more efficient.
2768  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Dragnet: A Method for Tagging Bitcoin Addresses of Exchanges on: March 14, 2020, 08:46:54 PM
Take a look at this thread. Some forum members were creating CoinJoin transactions with each other. Review how the Wasabi Wallet works; it combines inputs from various users to obfuscate the relationship between each user's inputs and outputs. At one point, now-defunct exchange Mt Gox allowed users to 'import' their private keys into their accounts, and Mt Gox would use those private keys to create transactions that spent any unspent outputs spendable with the private keys, and the transactions would be spending unspent outputs of other customer's private keys, and some of Mt Gox's own coin. With the advent of Lightning Network, many people will sign transactions that have other people's inputs.

The point of all this is that a single transaction that connects two addresses together is not necessarily enough to link two businesses together, absent additional evidence.

Also, a classification model that is accurate 96% of the time (it is unclear how you are measuring accuracy) has very high accuracy. 2769  Economy / Lending / Re: If I have collateral why should I ask for a loan on: March 13, 2020, 10:24:50 PM
If you have a car, why would you take out a car loan? If you have a house, why would you take out a mortgage? If you have a rental property, why would you take out a mortgage against your rental property?

Probably the most analogous to most loans taken out on this forum, if you have a stock portfolio, why would you take out a margin loan?

Answer the above questions, and you will understand why someone with collateral might take out a loan.

What makes trusting that you will repay any loan you take out a good idea? Do you have a history of repaying back loans that can be verified, or of being trusted with others' money?
2771  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Warning]“Coronavirus map” contains malware on: March 12, 2020, 05:54:19 AM
Downloading and running executables from the Internet is the easiest way to get malware on you machine. People should really run only 2 kinds of programs on their machines: the open-sources ones that were reviewed by themselves or others, and the ones that are distributed by some reputable company. And thanks to web apps you often don't even need to install anything and just use a website version, which is perfect for things like live maps.
Even if whoever is promoting the malware were to open source their program, I would suspect most people would be unable to look at it and determine it is malware. If you look at the blog post referenced in the OP, you will see the malware part of the software is fairly deep in the program. It is also possible to create fake reviews, or in the case of a git website, fake stars, forks and the like. It is really best to only run software from a very reputable source, or that you personally build/create.

Jeez! People are that paranoid these days, That we have 3rd party trackers for tracking viruses, huh! They won't trust official sources but are willing to trust random third party software which might come with all sorts of tracking and other malware. LOL!
It appears the malware is selling itself as a way to more efficiently track cases, and stay more up to date.
2772  Other / Beginners & Help / [Warning]“Coronavirus map” contains malware on: March 12, 2020, 12:08:30 AM
There is a string of malware going around that seeks to give the impression that it is a dashboard that tracks coronavirus cases.

According to an article, I found, the malware displays real information obtained from Johns Hopkins University about coronavirus cases.

While the malware does have an actual functioning GUI for tracking coronavirus cases, in the background it collects login information you enter into web browsers and looks for various private keys in various crypto wallet software. According to a security blog post on the malware, it will send the stolen data to an IP address that is associated with http://coronavirusstatus[.]space/

The SHA-245 of the malware is 2b35aa9c70ef66197abfb9bc409952897f9f70818633ab43da85b3825b256307

This should serve as a warning that even if a software appears to be useful, it is not necessarily safe to use if not obtained from a trustworthy source.
2773  Bitcoin / Project Development / [ANN]Merit API on: March 11, 2020, 08:19:26 PM
There appears to be demand for quick stats about merit.

As such, I am releasing an API that will allow you to quickly retrieve information about merit a person has sent, received, received recently, and that has been sent between users.

You can access the API by performing the following steps:
Go to https://bitcointalk-merit-api.herokuapp.com/
Go to the URL of one of the endpoints described on the above page.

I will try to keep this thread updated, however, the above page will contain up to date information about available routes.

The following routes are currently available:
/api/v0.1/number_received/[uid]
/api/v0.1/received_recent/
/api/v0.1/number_sent/[uid]
/api/v0.1/between/[uid_from]/[uid_to]
/api/v0.1/received/[uid]
/api/v0.1/sent/[uid]

[uid] is the UID of the account you are querying. [uid_from] is the UID of the account that sent merit, and [uid_to] is the UID of the account that received merit.

number_received - returns the number of merit the account has received
received_recent - returns the number of merit the account has received in the last 120 days
number_sent - returns the number of merit the account has sent
between - returns the total number of merit sent from [uid_from] to [uid_to], and a list of transactions that contain the time, date, day of week and post id of the merited post
received - returns the total number of merit received and a list of transactions that contain the time, date, day of week and post id of the merited post
sent - returns the total number of merit sent and a list of transactions that contain the time, date, day of week and post id of the merited post

The code is available at https://github.com/numberedprime7/merit-api

The merit data is as of the most recent merit data dump (usually happens on Saturdays).

Suggestions for improvements and bug reports are welcome.

As an example as to how you access the endpoints, below is an example of how to access all the merit I have sent:
https://bitcointalk-merit-api.herokuapp.com/api/v0.1/sent/2561166

to do -
write readme on github
create HTML file/render_template code to display endpoints/descriptions better
allow for lists of UIDs to be passed
consider improving dictionary format
2774  Other / Meta / Re: Total count of received & spent merit in the last 120 days on: March 11, 2020, 08:18:52 PM
You can use the following API endpoint to get the number of merit a particular UID has received in the last 120 days:
https://bitcointalk-merit-api.herokuapp.com/api/v0.1/received_recent/[uid]

You can find more information about other functionality of the API in the below thread:

2775  Economy / Reputation / Re: Hello DarkStar_. How about adding a compulsory avatar for chipmixer campaign? on: March 11, 2020, 04:53:25 PM
The current form of advertising is probably not the most efficient for Chipmixer compared to other campaigns. I am guessing they haven’t done any kind of market analysis to see how much they need to pay to maximize their advertising coin in quite some time.
I'm guessing they just don't mind the cost, and they do like Bitcointalk:
You cannot even trust Google on this
Some companies (Google) will advertise known scams. Some people (theymos) will not advertise possible scam (ICOs) even if it costs them (around 9 BTC per week). This is a reason why ChipMixer buy ads at this forum and not on Google.
I don't think google accepts crypto, which to be honest, is the real reason why ChipMixer doesn't buy ads on google. As of now, I believe Google's policy on financial services would not allow ChipMixer to buy ads on google.

My point was not about the medium the advertising is purchased on, my point is about the price being paid for ads being higher than what is available elsewhere. They are paying up to $5 that other companies are paying $1 for. If you look at the last few times slots have opened up, there were dozens of applications for each available slot. You don't see this for other signature campaigns some other signature campaigns are having trouble filling all their slots.

I am guessing they haven’t done any kind of market analysis to see how much they need to pay to maximize their advertising coin in quite some time.
I don't know if that's true or not, but my guess is they're seeing a return on their advertising dollars since the campaign has gone on for so long.  I doubt they'd still be running the campaign if they weren't seeing results.
You don't have a referral link on your signature, so I doubt they have a solid idea as to their return on their investment. My guess is they are profitable enough to pay all their advertising costs. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of their operations is run via automation. They may even top off the money DS is holding on their behalf automatically, and they may even use some kind of chatbot for communications.
2776  Economy / Lending / Re: Can i get a loan with my account as collateral? (Member with 59 merit) on: March 10, 2020, 06:58:44 PM
Is anyone willing to give a loan? Its not a large amount (0.05>) I saw there are some no collateral loans but they are for Sr. Members +, so was wondering if any such service for just Members
What exactly do you expect the lender to do if you default on your loan? Selling forum accounts is frowned upon here, so any lender who sells your account is risking their reputation to recoup what they are owed.
2777  Economy / Reputation / Re: Hello DarkStar_. How about adding a compulsory avatar for chipmixer campaign? on: March 09, 2020, 03:51:56 PM
Chipmixer pays between 3-5x as what one might expect to earn advertising for most other campaigns, depending on how you measure the rates. Most other campaigns require avatar space.

The current form of advertising is probably not the most efficient for Chipmixer compared to other campaigns. I am guessing they haven’t done any kind of market analysis to see how much they need to pay to maximize their advertising coin in quite some time.

14 Day quarantine is now underway for him.
My reading of his statement is that it will actually be something closer to a 4 day quarantine. He had contact with the person infected with coronavirus 10 days ago, and the statement read that he will remain in self quarantine until 14 days has passed from when he had contact with the person.

You're without a doubt right, I kinda skimmed through his statement so that's what happened. But the other lawmaker that is under quarantine is Rep Gosar from Arizona. He's said that he had sustained contact with the infected person as cpac, so I assume he meets the criteria to be put under quarantine.

Hopefully some science pours in, cause the media is really running away with this one (as they usually do)
Here is the statement he released.

According to the statement, he didn’t have enough contact with the person to meet the criteria for self quarantine and he doesn’t have any symptoms. Per the statement, testing is not effective for those without symptoms.

The self quarantine is out of an abundance of caution due to how many people he interacts with every day.

I don’t think you are at a high risk of catching the coronavirus from brief interactions with someone who has it.
