No GPU ?
i'm out  Undecided

We will start N = 2048. Just let's you know, N = 2048 cannot prevent currently GPUs to mining, but we agree that it will take time to come up with miner software. After the software comes out, we just hope the N will go up enough to prevent GPUs again. Smiley

ready for a botnet attack? it will almost kill da cpu-coin

We have 3 servers located in LA, NY, and Amsterdam. Hope, that's will be enough to handle otherwise we need to seek funding for other servers.
He was probably talking about 51% attack and difficulty rape, not about DDoS'ing your servers.

Oh, I see, for 51% attack, I don't think it will happen during first day or week because currently it doesn't have miners like cpuminer for mining this coin. Only solo mining support. For difficulty rape, I'm still thinking about that but let's see Smiley

How much physical memory do you have on the i-5 that segmentation faulted?

Does N-Factor=12 or N-Factor=13 work properly?

I tested with N-Factor=4, 9 and 10. it works normally. Right now still testing with N-Factor = 12.

I am testing on VM. My VM has RAM 8 GB. My laptop has 16 GB.

Does this use scrypt-jane?

Nope, I'm using scrypt like Litecoin but change N from 1024 to (... don't know yet .. please vote ...) and the N will change base on timestamp like Feb 2015 will go up, Augest 2015 will go up again. Not scrypt-jane.
288  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [Ann][VTC] Vertcoin - adaptive N-factor in Litecoin - CPU-only mining on: January 09, 2014, 05:07:53 AM
Don't aim to prevent GPU mining..  If you can keep out the ASICs you've still done us all a great service, and it'll take time for the GPU miners to catch up since cgminer is unsupported for scrypt.

I'm still thinking about that. Or Should I just start at N = 2048, then let's change N every 8 - 12 months for preventing ASICs but still give opportunities for GPUs to catch up ?
289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / What is begining of N number we sould pickup for Vertcoin ? on: January 09, 2014, 12:57:17 AM
According to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364, Vertcoin team want to launch on 11 Jan 2014, We focus only CPU mining. The problem come out when we pickup N = 32768. Our core-i5 cannot mining the coin. So we decided to lower the N value but it needs to be more than 1024 ( Currently Litecoin using).

Thank you for your vote.

Hi Guy,
I want to consult with all of you about N-factor.

I have tried with N-factor = 14, N = 32768 in Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3320M CPU @ 2.60GHz. Result is segmentation fault.
I tried to change it to N-factor = 4, N = 32. it is working normally.

My question is what is begining of N-factor should we pickup for Vertcoin. I want to prevent GPUs and ASICs, but when I choose N = 32768, it prevents CPUs too. Sad

Miner
Currently, it does not support pool-mining. Only solo mining available. ( I hope "pooler" or other people will consider making the cpuminer support the algorithm soon. )
It shouldn't be hard. Will you disclosure algo some time before launch? I think the only thing required is CBlock::GetHash() code.

Sure, I will upload it before tomorrow. Currently, we are testing in testnet to mark sure it can generate block and other things.

You should put that logo in the first post, and Vertcoin in big letters!

Thank you for your recommendation.

Announcing Vertlet - Vertcoin Wallet for iOS
http://www.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/28ugnu/announcing_vertlet_vertcoin_wallet_for_ios/

What is Vertcoin?

Vertcoin is a cryptographic currency, similar to Bitcoin and Litecoin, with one major difference.  As the forerunner of the digital currency movement, the original Bitcoin developers were unable to perceive all potential threats that would arise to challenge it's mission as a decentralized currency.

Millions of dollars were spent by various companies to build application specific integrated circuit (ASIC)  computers in an attempt to monopolize mining.  These devices made it so GPUs and CPUs were no longer useful in the mining process.  As a result, the vast majority of Bitcoin mining and transactions would now be processed by large data centers that required hundreds of thousands, or millions of dollars in investment.

Now that Bitcoin computational power is handled almost entirely by large data centers, the currency has rapidly changed from a distributed, decentralized currency, to one that is much more centralized and vulnerable.  Companies such as Cex.io are routinely hitting 40% PoW computational power on a daily basis, and will soon be able to perform 51% attacks at will, if they so choose.

Due to the problems ASIC chips brought on the digital currency platform, a new currency, Litecoin was created.  Litecoin attempted to utilize the Scrypt hashing algorithm, which is more memory intensive than SHA256, to deter ASIC use.  As of January 2014, there are now Scrypt ASIC chips being deployed by the Chinese for mining.  So far, around 1000 Mhash of Gridseed ASIC chips have been brought online and used on the litecoin and middlecoin.com network.

The Chinese chips have not been released on the greater market at large, but eventually they will, and the same problems that SHA256 currency faces will come to the Litecoin and other Scrypt currency networks next.

Where does Vertcoin fit into this?

Scrypt was utilized by Litecoin to try and deter ASIC use because large memory requirements are the best way to try and make ASIC financially unfeasible.  Litecoin held out for a while, but the original memory requirements in the barebone litecoin distribution were just not high enough to lock out ASIC completely.

Vertcoin has now been released as the logical evolution of Litecoin and introduces what's known as "Adaptive N-Factor".  The N-factor component of Scrypt determines how much memory is required to compute the hashing functions.  Vertcoin N-factor increases with time to stay one step ahead of any possible ASIC development.

For the long, foreseeable future, GPU computing will be the fastest method of computation for Vertcoin, but CPU computation will eventually make gains as N-factor increases.

Due to the large demand for having a more ASIC proof currency ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=359323.0 ), Vertcoin was created using Litecoin as a base, and has an adaptive N-factor applied based on the timestamp of blocks generated.  Instead of using a fixed value of 10, such as Litecoin does, the Vertcoin N-factor begins at 11 and gradually increases over time using the following schedule:

| N        | Memory | Timestamp   | Date/Time                     |   |

How to Mine

1)  GPU mine using CGminer modified for Vertcoin support (currently fastest method):
   1.  Windows Version https://vertcoin.org/downloads/vertminer-0.5.3.zip
   2.  Source code for both Windows and Linux https://github.com/Bufius/vertminer-gpu

   Build HOWTO for vertminer: https://vertcoin.org/gpu-miner-build-howto.html

IMPORTANT: Please note that the Vertcoin algorithm requires different GPU settings, and that you will attain, at most, 50% of the normal hashrate that you would get mining a normal scrypt coin. Everyone else will also of course have at most half their normal hashrate, so you will remain equally competitive and mine the same "slice of the pie" as you normally would.
In particular, you will need a --thread-concurrency setting of around 70% your normal setting. There is a GPU settings thread at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=416572.new#new that may help with setup, and if you are setting up on a GPU type that no-one has posted settings for yet, it would be appreciated if you would post your GPU type, settings and hashrate achieved in that thread.

2)  GPU mine using CUDAminer modified for Vertcoin support
   1.  Windows 64 bit Version https://vertcoin.org/downloads/CudaminerWin64.zip
   2.  Source code for both Windows and Linux https://github.com/cbuchner1/CudaMiner
   3.  OSx Build of CUDAMiner https://vertcoin.org/downloads/CudaminerOSx-Aleks_N.zip
Requirement : CUDA toolkit 5.5 and "--algo=scrypt:2048" command

3)  CPU mine using CGminer or CPUminer modified for Vertcoin
   1. Windows version https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share?s=D_fMD9YnSuMm5b8Ldi-jiA
   2. Source https://github.com/Bufius/cpuminer-vert

4)  CPU mine with wallet (currently slowest method):
   1. Open Vertcoin Wallet
   2. Choose Help
   3. Select Debug window
   4. Select Console
   5. Type “setgenerate true <number of thread(s)>”
   6.  type  "getmininginfo" to see hashrate
