MaidSafe Dev Update – October 4, 2016 – TEST 10
282  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] IPO of MaidSafe:  Entering the Future of the Decentralized Internet on: October 02, 2016, 03:14:51 PM
What a great week for Maidsafe/SAFE.

  • Glasgow University to Build dApps With Maidsafe as Part of New Course
  • Maidsafe announced international expansion through "Maidsafe Asia" which is a new joint venture with a Hong Kong company
  • The SAFE API Docs website went live full of code examples and explanation
  • The BttF equity raise just went green meaning that Maidsafe is properly funded for the coming years

We're waiting for the next dev-update where a new demo app will see the light as part of a new dev-tutorial. What it will be? Hard to say, the last time we got an email app.

Quote
We are currently working on integrating the SAFE Beaker Browser8 with the APIs required for the next example app. We are aiming to release the second Dev Tutorial next week

This is all we know so far. Great new week to come.

Been listening to SAFE Crossroads podcasts. Great info.

And more questions have arisen. I understand the basics of Safecoins and how they will function in their non-blockchain system. A closed loop system, where the coins, as spent in the network are destroyed (buried) and then reused -- issued to the vaults for their sharing of cloud space, so to say.

When MaidSafe goes live and I, for example, can trade my MaidSafeCoins in for Safecoins (1 to 1), but how are they purchased after that?

I know that exchanges should arise, but then aren't we back to the OldNet v. NewNet question again -- as I mentioned in my last post?

In other words, if I decide to buy some Safecoins, could I send money from my bank account to the non-profit arm of MaidSafe? Doubtful. Audits would compromise my privacy.

How could I then buy Safecoins and maintain my privacy? Use Monero?

And back to the 1 on 1 trade of MAID's for future Safecoins. How will that be accomplished in a way that will maintain user privacy?

I also understand the censorship angle -- that MaidSafe should be able to stop that -- but how will we be able to maintain a semblance of monetary privacy as we conduct business in network? Example: I order a pizza online with Safecoin. The Pizza Company will report that I used say, 20 Safecoins to buy that pizza (pie).

My country (USA) also has me report foreign bank accounts in some cases. MaidSafe is not a bank, but recent and numerous reinterpretations of cryptocurrency, might require me to report my holdings or face fines etc.

On top of all of this, once and if MaidSafe becomes popular, what is to stop governments from pressuring the public companies in control of the system to fork over information that could somehow compromise the network?

Or will the network be immutable, but then how will it be updated, without the possibility of becoming compromised?

Someone has the keys to the system and that someone is human, right? Publicly identified?

Does MaidSafe have a backup plan with anonymous devs and some kind of checks and balances system, to keep the ball rolling, if the pressure is exerted by regulatory agencies, bent on closing it down?

Just a noob trying to grasp the MaidSafe system...

That's a lot of questions. Have a look at the forum and use the search, a lot of this stuff is answered I think. https://safenetforum.org/

You can buy Safecoin just on an exchange just like you do know. I think several exchanges will do the switch anyway, so you had MAID and they switch to to Safecoin for you. Yes, exchanges are on the old network. Although we might see decentralized ones in the future where you can trade ETH, Bitcoin and Safecoin without going to a centralized system somewhere. Omni had an exchange like that as well.
When you buy a pizza and pay with Safecoin where's the problem? They see coins come in from a random address. you could use a new address for every payment. if you really want to be safe you could make a little account on the SAFE Network using your phone and a big, really secret one at home on your PC. You use 1 for just things like paying for pizza and the other to tip your favorite pornstar without anyone noticing  Grin
Governments can't stop SAFE the moment it's out in the wild. Maidsafe is free to program whatever they want. all projects are still out there; TOR, Ethereum, BitTorrent, Freenet and more. Writing code isn't a crime. spreading illegal stuff is. But devs just write code. And they also open source it.

Hi all, long time ago i sent Maid tokens from exchange to Electrum wallet instead of Omni. Can i get them somehow with priv key or i lost them?

That could be a problem. See the forum:

https://safenetforum.org/t/best-place-for-storing-maidsafe-coins/6788/29

Hope this helps.

So according to these posts i didnt loose them, i can import priv key to omni wallet and get them back or wait till official launch. Do i understand this properly? (my english is bad and im not sure) Thanks for your help.

"Electrum doesn't understand MAID. So you can use it to handle address generation, and to access your private key, but to view balances you must paste the address into omnichest.info or Omniwallet, and to move your MAID you'll import the private key into Omniwallet."

"NigelAug 9
Welcome to the forum! The only real way to move the maidsafe coins is ommniwallet by importing your private key. If where you are holding your coins is offline and secure (paper wallet) then you can wait till official network launch (not yet!) and trade your MAID for Safecoin 1:1 by importing your private key then."

I have no experience with Electrum. It might work if you didn't use multisig. But normally, when you have the private key of a Bitcoin address you should be able to implement it in https://www.omniwallet.org

@ zeeman and Mrboot:

Great info. Thanks.

I was thinking -- as noobs often do -- about inbound/outbound traffic.

Meaning, will the current internet, let me call it "OldNet," be able to communicate with MaidSafe or what I'll call "NewNet."

Could I send an email from NewNet to my Gmail account on OldNet or vice versa?

In doing this, will OldNet be able to track me in some way? (I'm sure they could sensor incoming emails like they censor so much else.)

Or are NewNet and OldNet incompatible?

If they are incompatible, I'm sure some bright programmer will devise some type of mixing/interpretation app to send/receive from OldNet to NewNet...right?

You could connect everything you want. TOR connects you to the normal internet but also to their darknet. You can browse the SAFE network with Chrome or Firefox at the moment. But the trackers from google and facebook could follow you from the normal internet to the Safesites. Not a good idea. So that's why the community and Maidsafe sponsored a dedicated browser to separate the normal internet and SAFE.

https://safenetforum.org/t/safe-beaker-browser-update-0-2-7/11214

I think for Alpha 2 Maidsafe will get rid of the proxy function so you need the SAFE Beaker Browser to browse SAFE. That would make things way more secure. The SAFE Mail isn't compatible with Gmail and others. That would mean you still have weak points like servers.

Where could I store my MAIDSAFECOINS right now ? Is it safe to buy them from Poloniex and keep them there ? because I read somewhere that I could store them in my Bitcoin address ? which I can't seem to understand.
Another question , to buy SAFE domains , we will have to buy using Safecoins If I'm correct ? we are going to pay who exactly ? also Is it possible to transfer domains for Safecoins (selling/buying domains) with individuals ? If possible too , could you list everything we will be able to buy/sell using Safecoins please ? I want to see the potentials of the coins.

MAID lives on the Bitcoin blockchain right now as an alt-coin. So MAID isn't the same as Safecoin which will be released later on on the SAFE Network. MAID is a proxy so to speak, it can be exchanged later 1-on-1 to Safecoin. I store a lot of my coins on https://www.omniwallet.org The log in name and password for that account never leave your computer. Make sure to store your wallet offline as well from that website. Another option is a cold wallet. The key is: make sure you always have the private key for your bitcoinaddress where you store your MAID. Don't use multisig.

If you buy SAFE domains or PUT (upload data) to the network you actually give up ownership of the Safecoins. It's a bit like burning, although on SAFE these coins can be Farmed again later on when a Vault does a farming attempt and the address comes out when a random address is chosen by the data_managers. Transferring domains should be possible (maybe later on) as all addresses on SAFE can be exchanged by users. This is true for Safecoin, Domains, ownership of a piece of data and more.

Safecoin > can be farmed when you deliver data to the network. Can be used to pay for storage (PUT) of private and public data on the network. Can be exchanged between people. Can be used to tip a writer of a nice blog. Can be used to buy domains. Can be used to prevent spammers by forcing other users to pay you some Safecoin when they message/mail you.

Do you mind explaining the bold part ? private and public data means that private gives the ability to download for you only and public is downloadable by others ? (you should give some sort of a link or something) ?
As for the omniwallet , do you mind giving details as I didn't fully understand. Should I make an account there or download the Github and run it offline ? and where should I sent ? to a BTC address ?

Just go to https://www.omniwallet.org and make a wallet. Very easy. You'll get a bitcoin address where you can store your MAID as well. They have an option to download a backup of your wallet.

About Private and Public data, you are correct. Private is just like dropbox. You store some files and it's there. Public is an option so you can share data (like a website) with other. Here's the link to the Alpha network. You can test it all out right now.

Does Maidsafe have any contingency plans in the event that they fail to raise the minimum investment amount? Assuming they have enough funds to continue development until the end of the year, what happens after that? It is obvious they still have quite a way to go in terms of development, as they wouldn't be pushing so hard to secure additional funding if they had an official release in the pipeline for the near future.

They still have quite some MAID from the 2014 crowdsale. They are in Alpha stage now, this is where everyone can use and try out the software with nice GUI's and installers. In the coming months they will go from Alpha to BETA. This means: Vaults complete so everybody can run from home. Safecoin built in and active, several Apps and more. I expect the MAID price to jump when they deliver what's on the roadmap. So if the MAID price doubles they might last 2 years on the amount they have. If it triples they might be able to survive even 3 years with current holdings. That doesn't mean they don't want more investors. They are talking for several weeks now about deals with other companies and what more. No idea what it is, could be hardware or something else. They also look for investors besides from BTTF. So they will deliver a BETA network without a doubt. Let's hope it becomes big and see MAID go wild. But I hope they find investors as well. That way they can hire more people.

In this Episode

Today we have an in-depth visit with Nick Lambert, COO of MaidSafe, covering a lot about where MaidSafe has been, where it’s gotten to and where it’s going. With the Bank to the Future equity crowd funding pitch in play, we dig in to find out how MaidSafe, as an open source, very altruistically oriented company, is likely to be profitable enough to invest in. This is a very well rounded, very informative coverage of MaidSafe and the SAFE Network, accessible to most anyone whether they are familiar with the SAFE Network or not. Whether you’re looking to be directly involved on an equity level or not, frank questions are asked and answered, and you may get a very new view of this project.

SAFE Crossroads Podcast#34, What’s to Profit? with Nick Lambert

How can you put the Internet in the hands of the people when infrastructure and networks are still required. Would you project that the service providers get stronger and greedier over time?

The SAFE Network is fully encrypted from bit 1. Even if you connect to a bootstrap-server where you get other nodes to connect to. No service provider or ISP can see what you're doing online. It's even more than that: if the NSA hacks your router inside your house it's still all gibberish to them as the data get's encrypted inside your computer and the keys never leave your system. So the only thing the ISP's could do is block your internet. Well, good luck with that. People would switch to another ISP. And let's hope we'll see mesh networks in the coming years to get rid of ISP's as a whole.

Campaign on Bnktothefuture is not successful. People have no trust in MAID? It is a pity because Alpha version is working. However, price of MAID is still high but I expected to see it in the range of Storj.

They said they're funded for the coming year. They're also looking at funding options next to BTTF. But it would've been great if we went to 1 million a bit faster. Maidsafe wants to grow to around 100 employees in the coming years. Other projects that use a blockchain get funded faster it seems, as the blockchain is a hype. But anyway, I'm in  Tongue and I paid with Bitcoin  Cheesy. I still hold MAID as well. My vision is that Maidsafe could become quite a big company when this tech goes big. I mean, no spam-attacks possible, no blocksize-debates needed, transactions hundreds of times faster than blockchain tech and social applications like MAIL and storage all in 1 big P2P network protected by cryptography. It took quite some time (10 years!) but they've showed me they deliver.

Here's a video where David and Nick (Maidsafe) get interviewed by Simon Dixon (BTTF).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgM06HFIYdc

Of course I hope they succeed with this funding. They already have around 15 people working for them, but with good funding they could extend to even more.

I thought users should have Safecoins to be able to buy domains and do stuff on the Launcher , how come there is already domains and available "Safe" websites while Safecoins aren't available on the Platform yet ? (I know It's possible to buy them from exchanges for the moment)

It's out in the open so to speak. People can test, developers can try out apps and people can build websites and register domains. The network will be wiped though, as it's in Alpha (not Beta). So in a few months people can farm test-Safecoin and Maidsafe can try several algo's to see what fits best. If they've optimized it and people are running Vaults from home again (as we did in several tests) they will announce the launch of the real network. At that moment the network is started and can't be stopped again. So what they're doing is testing, testing and more testing. They also allow external devs to build applications that work with their API's. So everything is getting optimized for the great moment where this thing goes live. That might take some time, but as users we're getting more apps and cool stuff to try out. People are building forums and social media websites for this thing at the moment.

So it looks like another form of tor browser? Can't visit normal sites, only open special sites with safe://websites, similar to tor's onion dark net. It will be widely used by dark net merchants, i guess.

Yes, it's a bit like TOR's darkweb. But SAFE wants to do more. They already allow you to register a domain in their DNS (Decentralized Name System). Very user friendly. They've also built a mail application which you can use on the TEST 9 Network. They also want to fix everything related to storage, so think of BitTorrent but fully encrypted (this actually works, test it on Alpha network). They also want you to store private data like on Dropbox, but also fully encrypted. Safecoin is one of the killer ideas. It's fully anonymous, extremely fast and scales to thousands of transactions a second.

So, think of it like Java that starts on your computer in the background. In this case it's the SAFE Launcher. You log in and give your credentials only once. On the network you are free to download files, browse websites, tip a writer of a nice article some Safecoin, browse a videosite and it's all P2P. You might understand why they're working for 10 years in this stuff now  Grin. But the good new is, we're getting close. They have the DNS working, SAFE Mail, private and public storage, SAFE Websites, routing, their own browser. Exciting times.

how to visit the other ppls' Demo App websites/services?

thanks.

The SAFE Beaker Browser won't connect you to the normal internet with http and https. Instead it connects you to safe://websites.
For now you can set a proxyserver and use your current browser (mixed browsing). Please notice this isn't secure as tracking cookies might
follow. Give it a go on the Alpha network.

https://safenetforum.org/t/safe-network-alpha-release/10687

Here you can find hundreds of websites listed:

https://safenetforum.org/t/safe-network-alpha-release/10687/317

In the coming months we'll see several web-apps for the SAFE Beaker Browser. So SAFE will have it's own tools to browse the network.

I'm going to have internet soon, other than my phone's hotspot. Is this coin in beta? Can it be "mined" right now?

No not yet, they're working on the routing/security layers first. these have to be very good before they implement test-Safecoin. I do think that will be the killer App though as
transactions are expected to be finalized under a second and can scale to thousands per second without a problem. No blocksize debate needed.
